I think the only thing that could make Japp's better in my mind is if they had kept some of the wigs and you could wear them while you enjoyed your amazing cocktails. I'd really love to see a bunch of tipsy people sitting around with wigs askew on their heads, deep in conversation in the soft light of the room that feels full of Prohibition era nostalgia, gesturing with a French 75 in hand, and possibly smoking candy cigarettes in those long holders. But, even without all that Japp's is one damn fine place to have a damn fine cocktail, no matter your poison of choice. read more

Opened by the amazing Molly Wellmann, Japps has numerous mixologists of only the highest caliber behind the bar, backed by the best choice of alcohol around. Yes, you can come here to get your "usual" but the best thing to get here is something new. Honestly, the best way to get a drink here is to choose your alcohol of choice and just let them surprise you. Or, if you're in the mood for something, just explain to them what kind of flavor you want, and let them work their magic. Once they've done their thing and hand you you're drink, they even go into telling you what is in it and the history behind your drink. Once you have your drink in hand, sit down with some of your closest and have a good ol' conversation. Yeah, I said it...a conversation. You see, there are no TVs in Japps. None. At. All. And that is a great thing in my opinion. I always hate going to a bar, trying to talk over the tv, or the band, or the DJ. It's a giant pain in the ass. Now, it's not silent in Japps. If you get past the white noise of people chatting it up, there is music playing and they even have a jukebox, but I've never seen anybody use it. I don't blame them one bit either. I would much rather sit down with friends and enjoy their company. So if you've grown weary of the typical bar with bud light everywhere and you want a classic bar, with proper drinks and amazing conversation, go to Japps. You will not be disappointed. read more

Another Cincy classic. Japp's is a vintage-y bar with handcrafted cocktails and dancing annex. I have been here every so often, a few times for birthday celebrations. The specialty cocktails never disappoint and there's always something new to try. The atmosphere can be calm or rowdy, depending on when you go. Of course, weekends are the busiest and dancing starts around 10pm. We were just here the other night (not knowing about Santa-Con) and there was a brass band playing. The band was so entertaining and even walked around the bar while playing their trumpets and trombones. They also play some old-school music in the annex sometimes if you're not into the more "cluby" music. You can't really go wrong with any of the Wellmann bars! read more

If you look below... you'll find my most proud review I've ever written... gist: Japp's is the most important and finest bar in America. PDT? The Aviary? Bourbon & Branch? No, no and no. Japp's. Japp's isn't a 'vintage homage'; it's 'understated authentic'. This is the type of bar to associate with the nostalgic and ill-defined period previous to the first world war, when the magic of automobiles, airplanes and moving pictures lent the romantic promise of a civilized future. Here, the light bulbs are incandescent and flicker a little, the ceiling panels are metal, soft jazz plays intermittently from an amplifier almost certainly powered with tubes, and the liquor cabinets are crafted from a grain of wood unavailable this century. While it's questionable to ascribe virtue to a drinking establishment, the confidence of Japp's is worth noting. This is a restaurant that serves $8 drinks because the ingredients are too expensive to sell for less. You'll taste bourbon, and absinthe, and all manner of reductions and syrups and citrus concoctions. Drinks are crafted with balance and poise, and the bartenders possess sophistication while maintaining a healthy sense of genuine humor (heck, where else in Cincinnati can you mix for a night without a single order for jack 'n coke?). Coffee, which inhabits a third of the drinks, is made via a vacuum process: trust me, you haven't had coffee made this way before, because you didn't pass Alchemy at Hogwarts. Slacker. Had you passed, Professor Snape would have instructed you to make coffee like this, and it would have been in a seminar titled 'aphrodisiac stimulants'. Finally, worth noting is the clientele. This bar will feel the sag of hipsterism, no doubt invaded by trust-fund children obsessed with bohemian irony. Dear Cincinnati, don't let this happen. If the opening weekend is an indication of future business, Japp's will welcome a classy and egalitarian mix of newcomers to the neighborhood, seeking something with a lasting value that will exceed the trend. Live jazz was playing that was simply incredible. My drink was seasonal, fresh, and everything I could have ever wanted. The ambience was something from a parisian cafe. The bartender told us the 1879 denotes the date the building was opened as German hair shop. It only has been a bar since the 80's. i just moved here from santa cruz, ca - and this is the first place my bestie, angela c., brought me to. she knows what's up, and so does japp's. if it's true that cincinnati / ohio / the midwest are ten years behind california, japp's is far ahead of schedule. first of all, the set-up and atmosphere were extremely chill and laid back. molly was friendly, sweet and welcoming and after learning of my move, assured me that cincinnati was much more happening than it was when i moved away 10 years ago. she said it with such genuineness that i didn't even need a drink to believe her! oh yeah, and the drinks. she could put motiv in santa cruz mixologists to shame! if you live in or around cincinnati (or are just passing through!) and you've never been here, please go! you will not be disappointed!!!! read more

Until Japp's I have had exactly ONE favorite bar in term of cocktail creation in the entire world -- Angel's Share in St Marks in Manhattan. They have well balanced, carefully crafted cocktails. Japp's is the ONLY institution I've been to in Cincinnati that can honestly claim to be as good as their counterpart in any city on the planet. I've had several cocktails here, but the one that stands out the most is one made with blended scotch, vanilla, and tobacco bitters. This is one of my favorite bars in Cincinnati. If you're simply looking for a beer or a glass of wine, they definitely have that but you're not really taking advantage of all this place has to offer cuz these guys are mixology masters. They make all the drinks you would typically expect at a cocktail bar and then they have all these fun side drinks. Typically, there is a blackboard at the end of the bar with specialty drinks, and if you're feeling social, I can almost guarantee that every bartender has his or her own drink they've created or like to make. And all of this while you get to enjoy a beautiful old bar in a beautiful old building. Life doesn't get much better than that. TIP: One of those bartenders knows how to make an "Uncle Al's Sweater." Another great bar in OTR! Japp's offers uniquely delicious drinks using housemade syrups, etc. Having visited there a few times already, I have enjoyed each and every drink (and believe me, there were A LOT of drinks). My favorite aspect of Japp's is that you can walk up to the bar and tell them what you're looking for (liquor type, flavor, etc) and they will make something unique just for you. Then, as if that isn't great enough, they will often tell you about the history of the drink. For example, I told Molly that I wanted a "floral-flavored" drink and she made me one of the best cocktails I have ever had. She then told me about the history of it, which was fascinating to me. I don't want to mess up the great story, but let's just say that it involved a Mexican bullfighter. You may have to wait slightly longer for a drink here, but it's worth it. After all, they are making specialty cocktails and giving each customer a memorable experience. The cocktails are pricey (approximately $8) but are worth it. I do wish that they had some less expensive options for us poor graduate school folks. I am not a coffee drinker but they do offer many coffee-based cocktails, which my friends greatly enjoyed. The first time I visited was before their grand opening and the owners were in attendance. They showed me what their upcoming plans are with the patio and somehow linking Japp's with Neon's, which is a great idea in my opinion. The decor is absolutely beautiful! They have done a great job at restoring the space and making it inviting. The space is both aesthetically pleasing as well as comfortable. Now here is something really great...they don't carry Bud Light!!! Muwhahahaha! If you've ever seen a blonde girl at Neon's heckling people who order Bud Light (or other similar crap beers), that's me. So I really want to like this place. It's the kind of place that makes you feel cool just by being there. The ambiance is great, the servers are quirky but friendly, and the place is historic. So yes, I want to love it. But maybe I'm not creative enough. Last Saturday night I went there with several friends. It was appropriately busy, but the service was still fairly quick given that the drinks take a long time to make. I gave some hints as to what I would want my drink to be, and the bartender went to work. He came back with a drink that was fairly tasty, and fair given the amount of information he'd had to work with, but it was impossible to drink because there were seeds everywhere. Maybe seeds are in, and I'm not hip - but I don't enjoy drinking through my teeth to avoid choking on a seed, or WORSE growing a fruit in my womb (kidding... but seriously.) Anyway, I'll keep going back here, but perhaps have to get more specific about things that I think should be implied, i.e. seeds in my drink or wrapper left on my straw. read more

I frequent Japp's fairly regularly and had a hard time deciding how to review it. When Japp's first opened it was superb- great drinks and great service. However, with its growing popularity I feel that both have declined- mostly on the weekends. Friday's and Saturday's can be a nightmare and getting a drink can sometimes take a good 15 minutes. This past weekend I had a particularly bad experience with a friend and rude staff. It was my first really negative experience, but was bad enough to make me question returning. I definitely won't be visiting as often as I have in the past. But Japp's is good for an after work cocktail during the week. read more

It's sure not easy to sway my soul, albeit I am cognizant that my stomach is a bit more amicable to such cajoling by spirits and brews. Japp's Since 1879 brings together an historic blend of bar and coffee shop in one brick and mortar just north of Central Parkway. This establishment, owned & managed in part by the purveyors of "The Famous Neons Unplugged," Cincinnati's own bartender-extraordinaire Molly Wellmann, Tazza Mia's Bob Bonder; is what I would describe as "Cincinnati's Top Opening of 2011" (reserving judgment for an address or two set to open on Vine in the latter half of this calendar) - hold me to it! The décor is a marriage of old and new; it includes some of the original bar cabinetry from the previous owners and some of the original signage, mannequins and stands from the wigmaker. The drinks pay homage to those of old, although they are something new all together. I am not privy to the creationship directly, although I do know that Molly and Bob have had a hand in inventing the craft and coffee cocktails, respectively - and behold what wonders they present. I've had about 35% of the menu to date, and it is wonderful - the craft, the classic, the coffee. My only feedback would be "hold some of the lemon in that rye" we want to taste it. Its one of the few places in Cincinnati, where once immersed inside, you forget that you reside in the proclaimed "backwards" Ohio River Valley. I hate to break it to you Mark Twain, but you may have been wrong; we're not actually 20 years behind, only 10, but can now imbibe like we're 80. I will certainly not complain - to drink for 80 years longer than the rest of the world may be preferred over finding the veritable Fountain of Youth. (Lest I deride other Yelp'ers on my maiden review, but who said a $8 cocktail is expensive? You must be a Mark Twain lover... welcome to 1991!) I offer Japp's my highest regards, and recommend to bourgeois-beanophiles and craft-cocktail-curmudgeons that prefixed liquor with hard. Go there. Drink. Be merry. Return soon. I will. We love going to Japp's. We were planning to urban hike downtown to see many of the ArtsWave buildings lit in red. Valentine's weekend, however was very cold. We ducked into Japp's for a cocktail experience. We really enjoy that Molly comes around and sparks a little conversation. We've always chatted with great fun people here. Some of my best memories after 10pn in Cincinnati have been at Japps! We always take a group with us when we go and we have so much fun together! You have to be a grinch not to love the music they play on the dance floor side. We always gather by the long couches in the front window (it is never crowded there). The bartenders are always sweet, attentive, and not annoyed by the drunks. The drinks on the calm side are really great! I can tell it takes skill to create those drinks. They come with a price you don't often see in Cincinnati (high) BUT for what you're getting, it makes sense. Every time someone new to town asks me the best places to go out, I recommend Japp's. How have I not reviewed Japp's yet? It is one of my favorite bars, and not just in Cincy. When you walk in the door, you know that you are not walking into some frat boy bro bar. It is a place where you can get an excellent craft beer or an amazing cocktail. The cocktail special board always has something, usually an interesting twist on a classic. On my last visit I had a Watermelon Rickey and a George Washington Pimm's Cup - both deliciously refreshing for the summer. The patio, while not huge, is a special little getaway in the city. You can hear the sounds of OTR around you, yet it still seems somewhat peaceful and indulgent. The annex is a beautiful space where there are dance events. As a nondancer, I have been there for some fun private events. Parking is available in the back. This used to be our secret Japp's/Neon's parking lot, but with Neon's landlord now charging for parking on busy nights, it seems that others have discovered it. But it is still a nice perk despite it being busier. Go to Japp's, bring a friend, chat, imbibe on some fabulous drinks and you will have a beautiful evening. read more

You can win my heart in the first five seconds, and if you don't win it within that time frame, it typically takes a long time to work your way in. Luckily, Japp's saved itself many minutes by playing The Temptations' "Aint too Proud to Beg" upon my entrance into the Annex; that's when I knew that Japp's was the one. The best bars, in my mind, have an area quiet enough to have a non-shouting conversation as well as an area to get your dance on. Japp's has both, and does both well - especially considering their music selection, which ranges from early 50s swing-style to late 80s funk. My favorite decade just so happens to be the 50s, mainly because I imagine that everyone then would swing-dance into barbershops, TJ Maxxs', and everywhere in between. So to be taken back into that period is always a weekend treat. AND they project video clips of old movies ("Singing in the Rain," "Wizard of Oz," etc) onto the wall while everyone dances! It's the perfect scene for anyone who also likes the following: 1) swaying their long dress side-to-side while dancing 2) bowties and suspenders 3) Midnight in Paris The only downside of Japp's is that the dance area is SUPER hot; the kind of hot I imagine a human would feel if he were forced to somersault around the equator while wearing all of Burlington Coat Factory's inventory. But if you're into that kind of heat, then hell, you're home. read more

Great local bar. It was my first time there with a group of friends on a Saturday night and arrived at about midnight while bar hopping and still were able to snag a table. The drink selection is a little more local, which makes it popular for hipsters but they were not overpowering. They do not carry yuengling but the local brew was surprisingly good. It gets loud into the night but you can still hold conversations or chat up those who walk in. read more

I'm not much of a liquor person...wine or a nice craft beer are usually my drinks of choice, but when you visit japps you just need to have a cocktail. The amount of creative choices at this bar are just fantastic. I basically told the bartender what I like (something that doesn't taste too strong but is also not sweet) and he made me an absolutely delicious drink with muddled cucumber and rose water. Another thing I noticed right away is that the bartenders taste everything. A chef would never send food out without tasting it so I was very impressed that they were making sure everything was perfect for every drink. The mulled cider was also delicious! read more

Great place to have an actual "Adult Beverage" Great staff, cool old interior space, a perfect addition to Main Street. Tell the bartender to make you something with Bulliet Rye. Doesn't matter what they come up with, I promise it'll be good. My only complaint is that its a bit too bright. The ceilings are so high the space seems off balance the way it's lit currently. I'd prefer the lights dimmed and have a few candles on the side tables for a little more intimacy. But thats just me. I'll def be back. read more

Love the atmosphere. It is obviously a bar that is all about the cocktail. An abnormally large percentage of the seating is right at the bar. Love it. It encourages people to actually sit next to each other and interact with the bartenders. The cocktail list was unique and they let us try one of the specialty drinks as well. I went with a nice cider that they would put with the liquor of your choice. It paired quite nicely with a dram of bourbon. While it was only a bit chilly out it was nice and warm, flavorful, and well balanced. Also busy, but not slammed. We did manage to get a table which was nice since we had a little too big of a group to take advantage of the bar seating. Very classy bar. read more

Every time I have been to Japp's, I wake up the next morning with big black holes in my memory and a red hot credit card. Which is why I come back, because I got to find out what happened, and next morning I am not a step closer to finding out. Kind of feel like the guy in Momento... But I really like this place, the drinks are good and the crowd is very diverse! From what I do remember I usually stick to Hendricks and tonic, but have had a couple of their signature drinks, which was really good. Only reason it does not get 5 stars, is the DJ/music style, I just don't think it is very good music! Since music taste is different to each person, this is just my point of view. But I have been a DJ for over 10 years and would probably go another musical-route, but what do I know, I am from Denmark! One of the only reasons Japp's didn't get a full five stars is because it was too crowded and the music. The bar side (there is also a bar on the side with the dance floor) is really cool. There is the bar, a lounge area with some pretty comfy couches and some tables. It is actually more spacious than it looks, considering it's a bar. The drink specials are always fun! They have a huge variety and can even suggest something for you based on what you have a taste for. Definitely try one of their unique cocktails! I will say though that because it is so busy it is really difficult to get to the bar and then when you do it takes awhile to order your drink. The dance side also has a bar and a DJ that plays old-school music and every once in awhile a more current song. I am more of a top 40's fan so if that's the music you're looking for you won't find it here. There is a projector that plays 50's movies on the wall across from the bar, which is fun to watch sometimes. It can get pretty loud and around 11 pm-12 am it gets super crowded on the weekend. The bathroom is your typical bar/club bathroom. There are only a few stalls and it gets really dirty. There is always a line. This is one of the few places I have been in Cincy that has a dance floor. I have been twice for that reason, but I am looking for someplace that plays top 40 and is hopefully less crowded. Granted, for Cincinnati this is pretty fun with great drinks. Just be prepared because a lot of people know that and it is very crowded. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed Japp's yet. I guess I thought I had, because I tell everyone I know about it--and apparently had just assumed that included Yelp. All you need to know about Japp's is that this place is run by the amazing, incomparable Molly Wellmann. If there is a nicer, more knowledgeable, more lovely mixologist out there I'd love to meet her! But there isn't. She is also a veritable libation historian. I love to go in there, sit at the bar, and say--make me whatever YOU want. And she does, and it's always great and off the beaten path (and usually involves some of her own infusions and mixtures--YUM). And now, she's training a bunch of new bartenders to do the same thing! Molly-cloning--I am ALL for it. The environment--it's a beautifully restored old wig shop. It's a lovely place to sit and just look at the architecture. The bar is stunning. There are no TV's, no blaring music--the focus is on the beverages here. Not getting drunk--but enjoying a handcrafted cocktail (or coffee drink), made with care. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is twofold: Those Molly clones aren't perfected yet (but they are getting better every week!). That is going to change soon. The other is that if I'm going to spend that long in a bar, I'll need food--and they don't have it, and don't plan to in the future. I understand why, but hopefully there will be a partnership of some sort down the road (you can't just have wings or something like that in this sort of place, anyway). You should go--it's wonderful! Well Japp's is finally open for business and I must say it's quite the intriguing establishment. Upon entering you feel as though you have gone back in time with a decidedly 1920-30s feel. I highly suggest walking in and having a look around even if you don't intend on drinking. The interior is simply gorgeous with many special touches and homages to it's historic origins. Now if you are looking for Neon's 2.0 this isn't the place for you. Drinks are a bit on the expensive side and all mixed cocktails are takes on drinks from the 20s and 30s. Do NOT order a Cosmopolitan because you will be heckled (my roommate learned this the hard way). My suggestion is to tell the bartender what you like and let them do their magic. The result will be delicious (and strong...you do get your money's worth). Not a drinker? Japp's also sells Tazza coffee that you may get with or without alcohol. I have yet to try the coffee but it looks amazing and they turn the foam on top onto the shape of a heart (Japp's is all about special little touches like that). So all and all Japp's is an absolute must see and perfect for special occasions or just for a drink or two. So stop by and have a look around. It is well worth it! read more

Japp's fills a niche that was missing from OtR. The decor is simple and sweet. The walls are a pleasant shade of green and lighting is aplenty, which is a welcome change from the rich colors and dim atmosphere you'll find in most bars on and around Mainstreet. The cocktails are all specialty and aren't the standard sweet concoctions found on a typical drink menu, but be ready to shell out 8 to 10 dollars a pop. The crowd is eclectic from what i can tell of the two times I've been and I assure you that there likely won't be a Bengals jersey in sight (!). It's a perfect place for conversation as they don't play loud music and rowdiness doesn't seem like it would be welcome. I would classify this place as a lets-chat-over-drinks spot and since I'm prone to doing that quite often, I'm sure Japp's will become a regular hangout for me. read more

Honestly in my top-5 bars of all time. I'm definitely in the Molly Wellmann fan club! The drinks here are by far the best alcoholic drinks I've ever tasted - and very unique. It's a crime to come here and order a vodka cranberry or Jack & Coke. Instead choose something from the cocktail menu - you won't be sorry. You can even tell Molly what you typically like and she'll recommend something. The atmosphere is exactly what I look for in a bar - a great place for conversation with a date or group of friends. Japp's is my new favorite place for happy hour. Seriously, I would go there every day after work. (Is that a problem?) I think what I love best is the vibe... the vibe is amazing. I know I'm probably supposed to say the drinks are amazing, and they are, but the vibe has to come first for me. There are lots of great places in Cincinnati but nothing has the same vibe as Japp's. After work the sun is streaming through the windows and plants, the jazz is playing, and I can sit and relax with my friends. The decor is beautiful, with lots of old but nicely restored wood and other fixtures which I know nothing about except that they are pretty. It's easy to feel classy sitting in the bar with this decor, drinking a cocktail and listening to jazz. Nothing else quite compares. Besides the vibe, the staff are all great and very friendly. So, I've been extremely excited to try Japps ever since I heard that Molly Wellmann was reopening it. I finally went when they were hosting a Woodford Reserve tasting, and it was fantastic. I was surprised and pleased by the subtle Wild West vibe to the bar. The space is set up long and narrow, like a larger version of the Lackman. The bar is incredibly long (and lovely), and there are many comfortable booths opposite it. In the back, there is a beautiful coffee bar. I didn't try it, but I'm sure it's quite wonderful because, well, everything Molly Wellmann does is wonderful. (Example: The Western theme continues even into the ladies' room, where the stall doors are double, saloon-style doors. Very cool, indeed.) We sat up at the long bar. I really liked that the liquor was not displayed in mirrored shelving--it can be disconcerting to stare at yourself all night long. This way, you can admire the amazing, incredible, unbelievable selection of liquor instead of your own reflection. And the bartenders are wonderful. They are so knowledgable and ready and willing to help you figure out which of the creative cocktails suits you best, or to help create something entirely new. And the amazing Molly Wellmann?
