In the mood for a flavourful hot dog, I cruised on over to Japadog on Ontario Street near Wendy's. Looking at the menu I was going to order the Aonori Fries but opted for Teriyaki Kurubota Terimayo Hot Dog. I noticed you can order on food delivery apps such as SkipTheDishes, UberEats, Fantuan, DoorDash, etc. Teriyaki Kurubota Terimayo pork sausage topped with onions, mayo, seaweed strips, sweet teriyaki sauce, stir fried cabbage. The first bite was sweet, salty, flavourful smoky goodness. That was one amazingly juicy hotdog. Many other places try to mimic the taste but nothing beats Japadog. read more

Yum! I happened to bump into this food truck while strolling Kitsilano after a long day of hiking, so my taste buds might be biased. Japadog was on our to eat list for Vancouver, so we were really lucky to see it while we were out and about. (But later we realized they have a storefront in downtown that we passed a few times also.) I was pleasantly surprised at their prices. Food truck prices have been skyrocketing lately, as everyone charges at least 10USD for something simple. The hot dogs here were more like 6USD so I didn't feel like I was getting ripped off. I tried the Yakisoba one, and scarfed it down. I don't think I quite cared for the actual hot dog as much as the yakisoba, but it was still nice to be able to eat both. I'd definitely be back if I ever return to Vancouver, and try one of their other items. I stopped by this food cart because many of my friends recommended for a quick bite. Arriving at the cart I loved the simple menu with 7-8 choices and the pictures of celebrities trying the food. I chose the #1 kurobuta terimayo which is their most popular hot dog. Legendary Dogs! When planning our visit to Vancouver I knew we had to try Japadog as it was loved by the late, great Anthony Bourdain. There was a cart just a block from our hotel but they were out of fries and a couple other ingredients so we opted to walk a few more blocks to the actual restaurant. The dining area was small and already packed but we placed our order and managed to squeeze ourselves into a spot to dine in. I ordered the signature Kurobota Terimayo and my wife had the Love Meat. I also got the black pepper shaken fries. My Terimayo was excellent, fun flavors of teriyaki, onion, and mayo on top of a damn tasty dog. My wife loved her Love Meat, likening it to a gourmet chili dog. I couldn't get over how delicious the black pepper shaken fries were and munched on them all the way back to our hotel room. The Yelp location for this cart was not accurate and luckily we spotted it as we were driving down from Georgia street. I went with the pork hot dog bento box which comes with fried chicken, some type of potato croquette, and 1/3 of two different types of Japadog, plus fries. The two half dogs that you get are the number-one and number-two sellers which are delicious just make sure and add some miso mayonnaise to the top to take it to the next level. On a side note they only accept cash and if you did not have Canadian dollars there is a bank literally 40 feet away from the cart so do yourself a favor and go in there and exchange your u.s. money for Canadian dollars because they will charge you one to one value if you try to give them American money. You know what I don't like on a hot dog? Ketchup. You know what I realize might be worse on a hot dog than ketchup? Teriyaki sauce and mayo. As you figured out I ended up getting the Terimayo based on a recommendation from the guy working this stand. It sounded good, I mean I like all (teriyaki sauce, mayo and seaweed) those things to some extent on their own but for some reason I did not like this. I had to stop by this cart on my short trip to Vancouver. We have a similar Japanese hot dog place in LA (Dogzilla) but I heard this is the OG. I ordered the Kurobuta Terimayo and my boyfriend ordered the Okonomi. Depending on which cart you go to in the city, I believe there are five, their menu differs. I wanted to try the Yakisoba one but this location did not have it. My kurobuta dog was super juicy and full of flavor. The terimayo (teriyaki and mayo) sauce doesn't sound good at first but the combination is great! I love the salty flavor from the seaweed. I tried the okonomi and I thought it was ok. I usually like bonito flakes but just not in a hot dog. I wish we had this cart back here in LA, my mouth is just watering just thinking of it! read more

After passing this stand outside the Waterfront station, I knew I had to try it; what on earth is a Japanese hot dog? I tried the beef Terimayo, and I wasn't disappointed. A regular hot dog topped with Japanese accoutrements, like Kewpie, seaweed, and some other mystery ingredients, it was delicious and unique. There is also a local RBC right next to the Waterfront station, which I used to exchange my American dollars for Canadian money to buy this dog! read more

I have to disagree with the mediocre reviews for Japadog because holy balls, is that one delicious dog!!! They have their carts with their bright orange umbrellas all over the city, but we came to this one twice on our trip. The guy was always super friendly. I had the regular terimayo dog, which had grilled onions, teriyaki sauce, mayo, and seaweed. Sounds funky, looks weird, but tastes amazingggg. The buns are toasted, the dog is fat, and the sauces all combine together to make a delicious taste. Hubby had one that he didn't like too much the first time (don't remember what it was, but it was pork), but the second time he had the spicy cheese terimayo, and he loved it. Not sure what's up with all the haters, but it's definitely not a typical dog... you gotta be open to trying it! read more

Came here on my road trip, I have to say it was a pretty nice experience. The japadog was pretty good, especially when I'm not a fan of hot dogs. When my friends were telling me about this place, i was pretty 50/50. Wasn't really sure what to expect from them. I have to say, they change my view of hot dogs forever and whenever I hear the word "JAPADOG!" I'll ask "WHERE!" I love the one I went to was a cart along the side of a street corner. It gave me a pretty nice environment to enjoy my hot Japadog in the cold winter vancouver downtown area. I would definitely recommend this place. read more

Yummy! I got the okonomi hot dog (with kurubuta pork sausage, mayo, bonito/dried fish flakes, cabbage and special okonomi sauce) and a can of soda and it was just $8. There wasn't a line when I got there and the wait for the food after I ordered wasn't long at all. It was just a good 5-10 minute wait (since they do heat the hotdog up as you order. The hotdog was very tasty and definitely one of the most memorable hot dog moments in my life :). I did spice up the flavor a bit with wasabi mayo (available on the side of their cart)..and I think that was a good decision. Minus one star as I stopped by during winter and this place is really literally just a hotdog stand with no place to sit...so it was a bit awkward eating just right next to the cart on the street...yea, I know I could just look more proper by taking my hot dog to go and eat at a more proper place...but what's the point if I couldn't have my hotdog while it's hot off the grill and in its best stage, right? :) It would be nicer and maybe worth 1 more star if there's a proper stand that we could stand by / a couple seats to just chuck down those yummy dogs quickly. read more

The first time I tried Japadog, I was in love with it. It's a heaven for Japanese food lover that also loves hot dog. However this time round and specifically at this stand, it just wasn't as good. It was a cold day so there weren't anyone else. This guy was probably too engrossed in Facebook on his phone, the bun was quite burnt black. When I asked him for another bun, he said burnt bread tastes the best and showed no sign that he was gonna redo the bun for me. The Mrs. said we had try Japadog so we went to the one nearest the hotel by the transit station in Vancouver downtown harbor. Ordered the #1 without seaweed. Bun was yummy and soft, as was the Japanese mayo, the dog skin had a snap to the bite. The teriyaki sauce was good too. The rub was not the prep or the condiments but rather the lack of perhaps more cook time on the dog to bring out more meat flavor? So rating a 3.5. Try one, your mileage may vary. Not your average Hot Dog. If you've ever had a Ballpark frank, there's this soggy preserved meat texture to our American favorites. JapaDog uses very crisp pork sausages that provide a good texture, complimenting their ever so Asian toppings. The number two is my favorite with a not so sweet teriyaki and onion shavings that curl up like a quick draw on the Wild West with Yosemite Sam. I recommend looking for these outside the tourist areas as they serve more toppings and have a better selection of sauces. Some friends and family have had Japadog so it was something I had to try while I was in Vancouver. I had a chance to grab some when I got off the skytrain waterfront station. They are parked right outside near A&W. I got two hot dogs. The kurobuta terimayo and the okonomi. I got it togo and walked to my hotel nearby. They were both pretty tasty. I liked the kurobuta more, but that's probably because the hot dog itself was tastier. Toppings paired really well and made for a great quick lunch. They take both CAD and USD. The conversion is 1:1 for USD:CAD, but if you're in a bind and haven't any CAD available, you at least have this choice. read more

Got here during off hours, the food was really good. The hot dogs are good, order with your tastes, it will be salty and delicious, great drunk food. The age ice is also delicious. Ice cream in sugared hot dog buns is way, way better than ice cream cones. Soft and warm on ice cream, I like the black sesame flavor, but they have vanilla, mochi, strawberr and chocolate too I think. I wish they had a pandan ice cream flavor. Finally got a chance to try Japadog today. Didn't know what to expect since when I was in Japan, the only hot dog I ate was at Costco. Ordered the kurobuta terimayo. Little pricey at $7.25. It did taste good though. The Japanese ingredients went well with the hot dog. The pork dog and bun were nicely done as well. It's not something I would get too often since it's not cheap, but once in a while when I'm downtown, I will definitely go back. The signs around the carts are pretty entertaining too. Spicy Cheese Terimayo and then says one line later "not too spicy." Apparently Ice Cube really like the turkey dogs. He's eaten 10 of them. They didn't say if it was at once, but seeing Ice Cube these days, I'm betting that it was. read more

I've heard so much about JAPADOG, that this time around I was determined to try one. I had some time to kill near Canada Place, and when the friendly tour guide suggested that Japadog had opened a location nearby I jumped at the chance. From a branding pov, JAPADOG has done a good job: cheerful colors, easily viewable signage and uniformed cheerful and helpful staff. I decided to go with the Terimayo which was billed as the 'kobe beef of pork' or something along those lines. Unfortunately it tasted like the 'nothing of something very sweet'. As predicted by wise-beyond-her-years Lisa Simpson, who said that the 'something of something' isn't really the 'anything of anything'. The sausage didn't taste like anything much except rubber, under the onslaught of the cloyingly sweet teriyaki sauces. Even Sri Racha was unable to douse the sweet flames. The bun was nice, crispy and warm, probably the only thing I liked about the whole experience other than my interaction with the nice staff. As sacrilegious as it may sound, I am going to give this beloved Vancouver street meat chain just 1 star. For 8 bucks, me thinks not. read more

I visited Vancouver and Whistler in November for a girls only trip. We hit multiple restaurants, but the highlight of Vancouver was JAPADOG!! At first, I was skeptical. If you've seen images of their products, you'd feel the same. But being the hot dog connoisseur that I am (no not really), I decided to give it a try. And ooohhh happy day. It was so good, we visited twice - 1st at the stand at the waterfront station and 2nd at the store front on Robson. Two words: KURABUTO TERIMAYO The Kurabuto hotdog is delicious and sweet. It's nestled in a warm soft bun and that combination of teriyaki and mayo is a great compliment to the sweet hot dog. The seaweed strips are okay. A bit difficult to handle when you are standing in the street on a breezy day. But at the sit down location, i appreciated the sprinkle of saltiness on my otherwise sweet hot dog. Want to make it even more amazing? Add the wasabi mayo. Silly Japadog people leave a squeeze bottle out for you to squirt to your heart's content. I might have been a bit too liberal with that goodness. Give Japadog a try. The taste is amazing. They opened one in NYC in November. I can't wait until Japadog makes its way to the strip. Here's one piece of advice. When you're getting a Japadog from a stand and you are a wasabi mayo fiend like me, make sure you to take off your gloves. Tried the Okonomi, a juicy Kurobuta sausage topped with bonito flakes, the Shrimpy chili, which is a shrimp sausage topped with real shrimp and chili sauce, and the Salmon dog topped with onion and their special dressing. Although I saw the cook stick a thermometer, I felt the dog was served borderline warm/neutral and not hot, almost leading me to question if it was cooked all the way. First stop, luggage still in tow, was at the Japadog cart outside of Waterfront Skytrain Station. There are five locations in Vancouver, plus one in New York. Signature items are available at all locations, but otherwise there are specialty dogs and items offered at select locations so it's worth doing your research ahead of time if there's a particular one you're in search of. We were just hungry and as soon as we spotted the bright orange umbrellas, we headed for this cart. I tried a couple of the TERIMAYO dogs, the signature all-beef hot dog and the Kurobuta sausage. Each comes drizzled with Japanese mayo and teriyaki sauce, and topped with seaweed and fried onions. The dog and sausage are on the thicker side, so I like that they cut into them to ensure the inside is cooked too. They were juicy, super hot all the way through and there's a nice snap to them. These toppings are amazing and have probably spoiled me as far as future hot dogs go. There are definitely more versions I want to try, plus there are no fries at this location, so I will need to check out another cart next time! read more
