Terimayo Kurobuta (right) and Okonomi Kurobuta (left)
    Austin B.

tl;dr while some menu items are overly ambitious and gimmicky, the signature Terimayo Kurobuta and the unique dessert lineup are well worth a visit to this zoo of a location in the McArthurGlen Designer Outlets Across Vancouver's eclectic food scene, few restaurants are as widely recognized as Japadog. Here, the menu unsurprisingly focuses on Japanese-style hot dogs featuring ambitious toppings like nori, bonito flakes, and even yakisoba. Founder Noriki Tamura brought his first food cart to Downtown Vancouver back in 2005, and Japadog has since expanded to countless locations across Metro Vancouver (as well as a cart on the Santa Monica Pier). Over the years, Japadog has garnered award after award, as well as hosted many a famous customer (from Anthony Bourdain to Ice Cube). We spent our final meal in Vancouver at Japadog's airport-adjacent outpost within the McArthurGlen Designer Outlets. All of the shops at this outdoor shopping mall are consistently buzzing, and this indoor, table-equipped Japadog location is no exception. The color palette sports a muted black-and-white with occasional pops of red. Warm lighting is focused on the expanded menu (which, here, even includes alcoholic beverages and ice cream desserts), stretching nearly the entire width of the restaurant above the ordering counter. The whitewashed walls are decorated sparingly with framed accomplishments and large posters of Japadog's most popular items. Black plastic chairs are pressed up to plenty of worn wooden tables, but securing a seat still can be a dice roll. Pop music blends with sizzle from the kitchen and chatter across countless different languages. Across multiple visits, my partner and I had the opportunity to sample many of Japadog's greatest hits and beyond. Of the topping combinations, our favorite was the signature Terimayo, featuring a sweet-and-savory combination of sauces to glue the salty fried onions and seaweed onto the dog. The Okonomi dog (inspired by okonomiyaki, Japanese savory pancakes) was decked with a sweet Worcestershire-based sauce, fried cabbage, and bonito flakes, culminating in a stronger but less dynamjc flavor than the aforementioned Terimayo. Lastly, the Yakisoba featured noodles that created more mess than flavor, but the salty pickled radish felt uniquely complimentary to the hot dogs. The franks were half-sliced to facilitate bites and maximize surface ares, and the buns were lightly grilled to a sturdy texture. Between the two different franks, we were most impressed by the juicy and flavor-packed Kurobuta pork hot dogs. In constrast, the slightly larger Wagyu beef dogs reminded me of a sophisticated ballpark frank, but I didn't think they were worth the premium. Meanwhile, the knuckle-sized Wagyu Menchikatsu was a deep-fried meatball of sorts that felt wholly awkward to manage on a hot dog bun. For sides, we very much enjoyed the Butter & Shoyu Shaken Fries. These extra-crispy shoestring-style fries were definitely elevated by the well-distributed seasoning. In contrast, skip the Meat & Cheese Poutine, which sported a one-note gravy, boring ground beef, and melted deli cheese. Of desserts, I most enjoyed the Age Ice with Black Sesame. The donut component was rich and crispy, while the ice cream was pleasantly sesame-y without going overboard sweet -- just be prepared to down it before the bread get soggy. The Omatcha Parfait fetured a sweet matcha ice cream and a less exciting vanilla scoop, both of which were which were enhanced by the many other textures of corn flakes, mochi balls, and jellies -- few places offer such a unique dessert in fast-food form. Lastly, the intensely tart Yuzu Japanade was a worthy beverage, delivering on its promise of a strong yuzu flavor. Service was efficient and professional, and all of the food was made-to-order. Prices range widely, but expect the Kurobuta hot dogs to cost about $7, while the Wagyu varieties are priced upward of $10. At these prices, Japadog admittedly feel more expensive that a standard fast food meal, and I wouldn't expect to ever fit it into my routine. But the best items on the menu are worth an occasional splurge, and Japadog certainly warrants a visit if just for the shear novelty.

Located in the food court section of the Richmond Outlet. The place can get really busy and wait times can go longer. The hotdogs were good. They've added some items on the menu that I didn't see from the last time I was here. They have vegan options as well. They just need a dedicated staff for table cleaning as most of the tables when we went were dirty.

I like the food at this place. It's at the food row of the Designer Outlet Mall. It's hard to miss. There's enough table inside. Clean. Fast service! There's plenty of options on the menu with pictures. I ordered the tonkatsu dog with Japanese Misu sauce and Japanese Mayo. Flavourful! Im going to try everything one by one. They all look good. Ill have to try the side orders as well! Recommended!

We hadn't plan to have Japadog but then saw the outlet mall we strolled through had one and well you just can't pass it up for many good reasons! First off the each hot dog is a must have and this time we got the basic kurobuta terimayo version. This hot dog is a snappy kurobuta pork sausage filled with fried onions, teriyaki sauce, Japanese kewpie mayo and seaweed flakes. I prefer to opt for the combo which came with shaked fries with black pepper and aonori (seaweed and salt) plus a drink. We paid a bit extra to try their yuzu Japanade lemonade which was very good and refreshing on a hot day. The service is no frills go to the counter and order and pick up when your number is called. I liked the ambiance of this location with lots of inside seating and an outdoor area with more tables and seating.

Great spot to grab a bite to eat while you're shopping at the outlets. We've been hitting up the outlets a lot lately and ate here twice in a month. The first time was on a weekday afternoon, when there was barely a line at Japadog. The second time was Saturday afternoon, and we had to wait a lot longer first to order and also for the food. Most of the menu consists of various combinations of hot dogs (including some veggie options!) and toppings, but they also offer yakisoba, karaage, and takoyaki as well as a variety of ice cream and parfaits. There's seating indoors as well as 2-3 tables outdoors. On our first visit, I got the #14 avocado dog ($7.99) and my friend got the #6 yakisoba with a veggie dog. Both were good. I've never thought about putting avocado on a hot dog before, but avocado makes everything taste better! The second time, the cashier accidentally charged me $229 instead of $22. I noticed the charge on my bank account a couple days later and called the store. I spoke with the manager and she was extremely apologetic and immediately refunded the full amount back to me. I was very impressed with how quickly she got back to me and was able to complete the refund.

Pros: - A lot of different and unique options. Cons: - Overpriced for what it is. - A bit salty. - Small portions.

The Japadog location at the outlets near the airport. Has a few tables inside and a few outside the door. Not taking cash currently due to covid. Menu consists of their variety of hot dogs, so other items like yakisoba and sausage plates, and milkshakes. Two of us got the signature terimayo dog, a cheese bacon dog (limited time item), a small sausage plate, a mango milkshake and a black seasame milkshake. Total was around $40, so a little more expensive than say a McDonalds but not by much. Took 5-10 minutes for the order to be ready. This was the first time I had Japadog, and the signature terimayo was pretty good. Slightly sweet mayo with the juicy sausage was tasty. Better than most hot dogs I've had. The sausages, along with those on the platter, were closer to a German sausage than a regular hotdog. The bacon cheese dog was decent, although the dog was on the saltier side. The milkshakes were light, as they are not super creamy and the flavors weren't strong. Overall I liked the food, can see why Japadog is well liked in the area.

The hot dogs here were good. It was a nice and quick place to get a bite to eat while we were shopping at the outlets. We got a side order of fries and two hot dogs. It wasn't the best, but it was good because I wanted a snack.

    Sally L.

Overrated and overpriced hot dog. Its nothing different from a regular hot dog you can get anywhere else. The only difference is that it's "wagyu" meat and that it has lots of other toppings on it. However $12 for a hotdog with jsut cheese and bacon on it IS NOT WORTH IT. I've always wanted to try this. But it's just a ONE time only visit for me.

    Yakasoba japa dog

Was out at YVR outlet getting some shopping done for Christmas and started to get hungry but didn't want a full meal. Saw Japa dog and decided to get one as it has been years since I last had one. I recall that the dogs taste better at the food stall on the street vs at their Robson Street restaurant but thought would give the YVR outlet location a try. Decided on the yakiudon japa dog without the ginger (yuck!). The bread was much like a regular hot dog buns, which was kind of disappointing. The pork sausage was nicely seasoned and the yakiudon was more like a yakisoba of thin noodles that was slightly too oily. It was a tasty dog but nothing really special that couldn't be created at home. For $5.75 it was a snack and not a meal. Very average dog so there must have been a reason why I haven't been back in years.

The service and the food is always sooo good! It's a nice place to drop by and grab a bite when you are starving! Always satisfies my hunger!!! We would always get the beef hotdog, but it seems to be new. The Wagyu Terimayo is the winner for us!! We'd drop by the outlet or even order and pick up from the Lansdowne location! Both places are always so friendly and service is quick!

People have been telling me that this is a must try place when visiting Vancouver..so try I did! This particular Japadog is located not too far from the airport - in a little outlet mall type of centre. Who would have thought a hot dog would cause such a stir? But as soon as we got our rental car, this is the first place we stopped at leaving the airport..lol So, firstly, I don't eat pork. Sadly, the menu here is mostly pork based (I noticed on their website, the menu features more non-pork hotdogs than this location had) Here, there are 2-3 options for non-porkies like me...so I chose the shrimp tempura dog (Ebi Tempura). I must say...it was probably one of the better shrimp tempuras I've had. Not oily at all, nice and crispy, not too much batter and of course it's Vancouver..the shrimp tasted fresh. The tempura fish is on top of rice and seaweed. At first I was like no way will this taste good...and surprise! It tasted good! The crunch, the saltiness of the seaweed, the rice...man../i wish I was having one right now! This location is not a cart, it's an actual restaurant. Free parking in the lot.

I did not try lamb skewers, I was told they were very tender, smoky and delicious. Mango sago drink was also legit item and very delicious. So many mango pieces inside. I really enjoyed mango coconuts drink with eatable ice cube. I chose pikachu shaped ice cube and presentation was so adorable. Drink itself was also delicious and a lot of mango pieces inside. Tea pot matcha milk tea was excellent. Presentation was very unique, staff placed a little cute tea pot on the top of drink and I guess dry ice inside and create smoke effect. it was very instagram worthy item. Highlight was Sanjie handmade cheese mochi! It was very unique item. The filling was Purple rice, taro paste, blueberries, starwberries blueberry cheese, fruits flavor boba and cereal flake coating. All ingredient worked so well! Purple rice and mochi were my favorite. Highly recommend this item! After eating, we enjoyed walking around shopping area and checked around game area. Came on a sunday night around opening time around 7pm in late july with a friend. My friend kindly gave me his express line pass (it was a gift) and paid for my entrance fee. We both saved at least 15-30 minutes of waiting time at the normal non-express entranceway and the $7 per person entrance fee. If you've been to the night market the last couple of years, it's basically the same as previous years. The main attraction by far is the food stalls. There were lots and lots of food stalls (mostly Asian food). If you are interested in my thoughts on the food stalls and my recommendations, read through all my previous years yelp reviews because i go into great detail about them there. I only bought one thing this visit (i went to a buffet earlier that day). I bought the butter beer which didn't have any real beer in it. It was mostly butterscotch flavored cream soda and creamy foam topping. It was $7 and it tasted alright. But I dont think i would get it again. I tasted cream soda and a hint of butterscotch. The night market does have "happy hour" food item specials but only some booths do this. Some food items are under $10 and drinks are $7. I didn't see many interesting happy hour food items during my visit though. They had benches and tables scattered around the food stalls and a bunch near the middle. But there were so many people that there was no space left. i just opted to walk and drink. Other than food, from what i remember, people sold Items like handmade stuff, anime merch like figures and keychains and lights, and some just sold trading cards like pokemon cards. They had ziplining which looks like fun. They had carnival games like popping the balloon, hammer drop, ring toss into the bottle, something that looked like pachinko, the pull up bar challenge, that stacked bottle game, and the birthday month dice game. There were some attractions like the human hamster ball where you climb inside a bouncy plastic ball and walk around. They also had a talent show. No offense but the talent show at the night market wasn't that great. The band at the time was singing a jazzy version of old school music from the 80's and did not have any stage presence at all. There were long breaks between each song. People were leaving the seating area mid performance. We came around 7pm and it wasn't that busy, but when my friend and I left a little after 8pm, the line to get inside was really long and the food stall area was crowded as ever. 3 out of 5 stars based on this visit. I would go to the night market if you want to hang out with friends and try new foods for the fun of it. Throw the budget out the window because a lot of food items are overpriced still. Last tip. Bring lots of cash because the ATM machine fees are expensive. As far as i know, most stalls don't accept card.

I think the main reason is because when i found them to be amazing, the boss was always there. This time, he wasn't and there was only a female staff working. We proceeded to order our two favorites: hawawshi and koshari. We haven't been here in a couple of weeks and had a sudden craving. Boy, we were deeply disappointed. The Hawawshi, usually pan fried to perfection - i.e. crispy pita with tender meat inside - was very hard to eat. When i opened the pita up, the meat was all burnt inside. I think they either overcooked it or they cooked it already but then reheated. With the pita overcooked, it became extremely hard and i had to rip it with my teeth. The koshari was also somewhat burnt and very dried up. The sauce they provided made it a little bit better since it gave the food a bit of much needed moisture. Had this been my first time eating at Luca, i never would have re-visited so many times. I will not eat there again if the boss isn't there to establish quality control.

He did ask me though if I wanted a lid for my round container. I declined as I was quite hungry and had a feeling I was going to finish the entire dish...which I did indeed end up doing. The tomato sauce was automatically poured onto the food this time, and whereas last time I was given two small containers with two different sauces, one of them being spicy...this time, the guy asked if I'd like spicy or non spicy. I said non spicy so I was only given one sauce this time, which was the tangy sauce. Food was just as good as last time. I saw something on the menu that said "Egyptian Specials". I might take a closer look at that next time. As far as I know, Koshari is the national dish of Egypt but if there's another typically Egyptian dish that I can try, I am always up for trying new things! Wish there more options like this around town. Egyptian food is really not a common type of cuisine to come across around here, so this place is a real gem!

Let me be blunt: after years of dining across Vancouver, this was not just the worst meal I've had…read moresince moving here--it was a downright insult to my palate, my patience, and my basic human dignity. It started the moment we were seated. Not two minutes in, a surly elderly woman--who I can only describe as the restaurant's self-appointed warden--barked at us to get up and move tables like we were misbehaving schoolchildren. No apology, no explanation. Just pure, unvarnished hostility. We complied, stunned, but the humiliation was only the appetizer. Then came the food, which somehow managed to be even more offensive than the service. Potato croquette (1/5): A greasy, dense brick of despair. The outer shell was so tough and leathery I legitimately struggled to saw through it with my knife. Chewing it was a workout I didn't sign up for. I forced down a quarter before giving up; my friend described it as "eating fried shoe leather," and she wasn't exaggerating. Pork katsu: Dry, stringy, and utterly devoid of juiciness. For a dish that should be crispy and tender, this was a sad, tough slab of over-fried gristle. The pasta on the side was the only redeeming bite on the entire table--and that's faint praise when the star of the plate is a complete failure. Curry steak: Absolutely forgettable. Bland, watery, and uninspired--the kind of dish you'd expect from a frozen TV dinner, not a restaurant that dares to charge real money. But here's where it goes from disappointing to outright repulsive. As I walked to the register to pay--already fuming--that same elderly harpy screamed at me to stand outside. Not asked. Yelled. In front of other diners. As if I were a stray dog contaminating her precious floor. I am a remarkably patient person. I've swallowed bad meals and rude servers without a word. But this wasn't rudeness--this was targeted, xenophobic aggression. I don't throw the word "racist" around lightly, but her vitriol was aimed squarely at us based on nothing but our faces. There is no other explanation for such disproportionate, venomous treatment. Let me be crystal clear: I will never--never--set foot in this establishment again. Not for free food, not if I were starving. The food is mediocre at best and repulsive at worst, but the service is outright abusive. Vancouver has too many incredible restaurants to waste a single dollar on a place that serves tough, tasteless garbage with a side of bigotry. Do yourself a favor: save your money, save your self-respect, and eat literally anywhere else. This place doesn't deserve your business--or your presence.
