Horrible. .over priced and rude. We placed an order for delivery that was not properly cooked. Called management to have it picked up and changed...he told us we were crazy. Finally, after arguing with them the manager personally delivered replacement food with attitude and told me "I don't want your business any more"...after being a customer for many many years Today, more than a year later. I decided to place a phone order with Jani...the manager gets on the phone and says " according to our records, you were once unhappy with our food and we choose to not have you as a customer" Wtf!!! Now I want the entire neighborhood to know what kind of an establishment is in their town. For starters, food is not as good as it used to be but we still order from here all the time. Tonight we picked up an order and one of the dishes did not taste right at all. We called them and explained it wasn't good and they asked what else we wanted. My husband said another dish and they had the nerve to say it would be a $2 difference. It's not the $2 but the principal. You're making us drive 15 min to go return the dish that was not edible and to pay $2 when we were the ones inconvenienced. Petty and ridiculous. Will not go back. They should have refunded us our money and replaced the dish. read more

Jani had been my Chinese go-to spot for years. But something is slipping here. And it's showing up in the lack of crowds when I go in to pick up my to-go order. The fried dumplings have always been my favorite here, and they are still pretty good. But the General Tso's seems to be lacking the savory flavor of the past, and I get the feel that the cooks have a heavy hand with the MSG. Also, the heat of the dishes has become erratic (Which simply should not be when cooking with a wok). The service has also become a little less friendly and personal, and when you are talking about your take-out go-to spot, they only get a couple minutes to make you fell appreciated and welcome. I will still give them another shot, becasue my life isn't the same without those dumplings, but not all Chinese is the same. Time for Jani to pick up the slack and get back to their previous high standards of preapration, taste, and ambiance. read more

I went to Jani today to order take out food. I arrived at 3:58 pm. As I was going through the menu I decided to order the lunch special. I placed the order to the cashier who then advised me that it was too late to order the lunch special. I asked her what time did it end? She advised me that the lunch specials ended at 4:00 pm. I looked at my watch and saw it was only 4:02 pm. I mentioned that it was only 2 minutes past 4 and that I arrived before 4 pm! She said it's a strict policy and would not honor the lunch special. I then walked out and will never return! This issue may seem very petty. However, it shows how this restaurant does not believe in courtesy and the proper way of customer service. Most of Their food has always been decent. I have taken friends and family members their often. NOT ANYMORE!! read more

I think this place is still very good. I know they haven't changed their décor in a long time, but I still think the teapot look is charming. It could use a little updating but so what! We are there to eat not to buy furniture. Call me old fashioned! I have never ordered something there that I do not like, but I generally get staples like chicken with black bean sauce or shrimps with broccoli. I think their steamed dumplings are very good also. Perhaps they are not great at making specials. I'm not sure because I don't order that. Overall I am always very happy with the food there. I find the staff to be friendly for the most part. Once in a while you get a grumpy server, but the food comes quickly so it's okay with me. I would definitely recommend this place. read more

Eh, seriously nothing special at all. My family has been going here for years and I never understood what they liked about the place. The food is mediocre and doesn't taste the slightest bit authentic. It should be a sign of doom when they serve both Chinese and Japanese under the same roof. Not my place for sushi, but for it is my place when I'm craving local sit down Chinese food. I don't come here too often because it's essentially a pig out session when we do. First, let's start with the restaurant. I've never eaten here and not sat at one of those giant booths along the south wall. I find it hilariously awesome that they sit people for two there. You could fit five people, easy. And it's less of a booth and more of a couch that you are sitting on. It's fantastic. People rightfully claim that it may need updating, but it works for me. Then how about the display of teapots and the occasional random thing that does not belong? Epic. The food is what it is. It's what you would expect from a very good Chinese take-out place that happens to have sit down seating. I like the fact, and one of the reasons I keep coming back, is that it's one of the few places around me that has pork buns and red bean buns. An order of one of those buns, cold noodles with sesame sauce, kani salad, a couple eggs rolls, steamed dumplings and only one entree - it's at the very bottom right of the Chinese specialties menu, some sort of chicken, shrimp and scallop dish that comes served with brown sauce, over a bed of fried noodles. Of course no meal here is complete without starting with a scorpion bowl, that naturally arrives on fire. Follow that up with a bottle of wine or two with our meal - and I'm in a happy place. Fatty place, but also a good place. I could sit here and go wild on the service, but it's a Chinese restaurant. I don't expect them to speak English, nor do I care that they don't. The clientele here doesn't order a number of glasses of wine, so we get it by the bottle to hedge against the fact they won't be showing up too often after the food is on the table. I'm cool with that. What I expect is to be greeted with a hi from the host, and seated. He comes back later to open the wine, and the servers are polite - all of which have been. Throw in some oranges and fortune cookies with the check and I'm good. 4 stars because it is what I need it to be. read more

Skip any of the Chinese food they offer here and just go straight for the Japanese... Went back here after years of being a regular for lunch & dinner (since I worked nearby) Can't say I've ever really liked any of the Chinese food they offer here. It's just not up to par with any other takeout Chinese place nearby by a longshot. We went early on a Friday afternoon. Too late for lunch, a little too early for dinner. I was really happy to notice that the sushi was 50% off for the early bird special. I ordered to my heart's content and still only paid about $20 for everything which was an absolute bargain! I do feel that they made the rolls a little bit smaller than I remember. Maybe that's because it was the early bird special time, but whatever, double up on your order and I was fine. My friends were laughing because we were probably the only patrons under 60 in the restaurant at that time.... but hey, nothing wrong with a good bargain! Back to the sushi, it's really good and filling. I highly recommend the "star roll" which is a mix of tuna, salmon, and yellowtail. I was sad that the dragon roll wasn't part of the early bird special, because it's really really REALLY good, but no worries, I got a eel/cucumber roll instead. The only thing I wish they had on their menu was sea urchin (uni) which sadly is lacking from their selection. But other than that, I couldn't be happier. Not the best sushi in the entire world, but I've definitely had a lot worse....and considering the price and that it is Long Island afterall, this place is definitely my "go to" for cheap sushi. Actually anything they offer on the Japanese menu is really really good as well. I highly recommend the "unagi don", they don't skimp on the eel and the rice and sauce are quite good. I used to like their dumplings and appetizers but even then, I've found the crystal shrimp dumpling to be of the pre-frozen variety you could buy for way cheaper at any Asian grocery. The place really has held up well for being in business over 13 or so years. I just hate that long corridor they've made that you have to walk down to get a table. It's like you're trapped in once you walk thru that maze. But in terms of decor, it's still way better than any "Mom and Pop" chinese place, and like I said before, go for the Japanese food only! read more

I usually only visit for lunch. Both their Chinese and Japanese dishes are pretty good.......and their lunch specials are priced right. The staff is friendly and the service is quick. For a dollar or two more than what you would pay for take out, you can sit down and enjoy a nice meal. I'd call that a "win"! read more

When I'm in the mood for Chinese food, Janine is my go-to spot. Since I moved I have not found any Chinese place close to my house that I like so I take the trip into Wantagh. This is not just a take out place. It is a large restaurant and I usually eat there. The parking lot is large so it's easy to get in and out. I had dinner last night at Jani. the service was awful. We waited quite a while before our order was taken. Then we were served our entrees so quickly and before our cocktails and the food was warm to say the least. Our drinks came when we were half way finished with the meal that we hardly touched. (Took home leftovers) Then we waited quite a while for the check. I love the food and that is why we go there and have been for years, but it might be the last time we do. Such a shame. I was there with my family on 6:30 PM Saturday 5/12/2019. We made a reservation and sat as soon as we got there. No issue there. The waiter that was assigned to our table was too busy to help us so the grey haired owner/host took our order. I called the skinny Chinese owner/host over to our table and asked why we don't have a waiter and asked for 10% off the bill. He said no and promised to get us a waiter but never did. We were served the food by a waiter not assigned to our table and that was that last we saw of anyone. No water, noodle or tea refills. The only time we saw our original waiter was when the check came. Some nerve. Needless to say I gave a very small tip. The hosts/owners did not care at all about our inconvenience. We will never go there again. They do not care about their customers. Kwong Ming here we come from now on. Much better service, food and courteous staff. Extremely annoyed with this place. I'm not one to complain but I feel the need to write a negative review. I went to Jani with a few people tonight and we were greeted with "Yea" as if the waiter was annoyed by us eating there. I wanted to walk out right then and there but was hungry so decided to stay. The chicken teriyaki was disgusting it tasted old and flavorless. The waiter wouldn't take any dirty plates off the table and my 3 year old said goodbye to him he ignored him. I'm usually a generous tipper but did not tip him. This man goes ahead and says "No tip"? The nerve I never will be back. Work on your customer service if you want a tip! read more

It's over JANI. I've been here a couple of times, and it's always been busy. But personally, I have never been very impressed with this place. My friends like it b/c it's cheap grub, and its edible. Needless to say they don't really have high standards. Most recently, my friends made a reservation for an early 7:30 dinner on a Saturday night. But I guess that doesn't really matter because we still had to wait over 15 minutes for a table. In the words of Jerry Seinfeld "they know how to take the reservation, but they don't know how to hold the reservation...." But anyway, they then squeezed us (a party of 6) into the smallest table they had. We ordered a bunch of plates and split them all family style. it was hard to pass things along b/c we were squeezed in so tight, but we made it work. The Sesame Chicken was good, but everything else was just run of the mill. Given a wok and some time, I feel like i can make a better fried rice. For the money it was probably worth it, but in terms of being the best local Chinese food- no way. Wouldn't go back on my own.. read more

My boyfriend and I ordered from here tonight for dinner. Some of the fish in my chirashi was good but some was very fishy. The rice, which is supposed to be seasoned rice, was plain white rice. Their wontons and sushi rolls have very little filling and nothing seemed very fresh. Even those crunchy noodle things you get with soup were stale. Their miso soup was pretty good though. We loved the Jani in huntington, prior to its closing during covid we would takeout from them often I was in the Wantagh area and was excited to take out from the Jani there. Went to Jani tonight . Ordered sesame chicken . Went to take a bite and there was a small black caterpillar type bug crawling on the food . Called the waiter and he immediately apologized and bought me a new plate . Thought it was pretty disgusting but continued our meal . I expected them to comp me something . Got our bill and it included full cost of dinner and drinks . Spoke to the manager who said they did not charge me for the dinner . Double checked the bill and they did charge for everything. OK, we decide NOT to LAME OUT and get basic take out chinese food so we go to a 'good' chinese sit down. I love chinese food, but really despise the RUBBERY cheap chicken the take out places have. So I wanted to splurge on 'real' chicken and broccoli, and guess what?..., RUBBERY chicken on a ceramic dish. My friend got BETTER quality chicken with the Japanese dish she ordered...go figure. I was dissapointed. I could have gotten that in a little white container and slopped it down in front of the TV. We have frequented Jani's for over 20 years. It is an outstanding restaurant with extremely entertaining celebrations of the Chinese Mew Year at both the Wantagh and Hicksville locales. Taste, presentation, service and the relative price are all very enticing. Ordered sautéed string beans and eggplant with shrimp and chicken and brown rice and none were great.
