Ahhhh I think people are giving this place too hard of a time! This is my go-to sit down Chinese place, at lunch time anyways. I've been coming here for years, as long as I can remember. And at lunch time, its definitely a bang for your buck. My girlfriends and I came here this afternoon for lunch. After contemplating between Japanese and Chinese, I chose the lunch option where you can get a little bit of both. My lunch bento box came with a salmon roll, ginger salad, white rice, and chicken and broccoli, all for the low price of $8.95! That is without the wonton soup and crunch noodles with duck sauce that we got also! Such a good deal, and I have so many leftovers. Also we got their fried pork dumplings, so good! And an order of 8 was less than $5! I'll be honest, but I was really nervous about getting their sushi. Thankfully, it was fresh and delicious, and I am definitely going to come back and take advantage of their early bird sushi special (most sushi being 50% off Mon-Fri 4-6pm). Give this place a chance, people! The service is pretty slow, I'll be honest. We were there for almost 2 hours, but we appreciated the time between courses, and didn't mind. My family have been going to this place weekly for many years.Very disappointing to report in our last few visits service and the food has gone downhill. In our last experience, I ordered a vegetable dish. It came with chicken pieces and bones in it. This was an issue as I am vegetarian. I brought the dish to the managers attention. He was very nice and polite, but dismissed it as chicken and shared. It was vegetable pieces with stems. Last night two basic dishes, sesame chicken and roast pork egg foo young were very bland and un inspiring. Also the the fried rice had no flavor and seemed under cooked. another sad review that i have to write when im with my grandma once again. its my grandmas birthday and we were so excited to eat some delicious food from jani's. We ordered some ribs and boy when i tell you they were dry lets just say after my grandma ate one it couldve been her last birthday. Very disappointed with the ribs. now lets talk sweet and sour sauce. It had so many onions im going to stink for weeks and now my boyfriend wont kiss me until i get rid of this stank. Gm. So My Daughter and I visited Jani in wantagh last night, one of our favorites. Last night was some what disappointing, besides the price increase the food amount is ridiculous. Ordered a wonton soup literally had one wonton noodle, boneless spare rib had about 12-14 pieces of meat about an inch in size. We then split an order of sesame chicken and not much different then the boneless ribs, the size of the chicken pieces was ridiculous, and to top it off the white rice it came with was the size of an ice scoop. Had to BEG to get someone to the table to take order. Had to practically FLAG DOWN BY WAVING OUR HANDS to get some service. They never even came to REFILL THE WATER -- simple task for sure! The portion arrived and my friend looked at it and said, "Is that it? Is that ALL?" They're giving you "ice in the winter" so to speak, nothing extra -- could they spare it? For my money, we should certainly NOT HAVE TO GO TO EXTREME LENGTHS during lunchtime t o get a waiter/waitress to bring some more duck sauce, tea, or water- - It's not packed to the gills with customers (I wonder why not -- ha,ha!) The waitstaff was so busy fooling around with themselves, they had no time to pay attention to any of the customers. The food tasted good, the place is pretty with all sorts of teapots, too bad they had NO TIME TO ATTEND to the customers. The lunch "special" was not special at all since there was nothing different or interesting on the menu, simply 'Plain Jane' plus they didn't offer any dessert or appetizer or good lunch PRICE. Danny's, my Take Out, gives you more for a lot less money and authentic, great quality. It's a far cry from the fabulous food and superb attention paid to customers diagonally across the street at Kwong Ming, a sit-down restaurant friendly spot which has been there for 50+ years, no comparison. Yesterday, a group of us headed to Jani for dinner, including fellow Yelpers Joanna L., Ellie B. and Sam C. While the food was great (except for one item), the service was unfortunately not up to snuff, bringing what I would normally give 4 stars down to 3. Around the table, we began with a few drink orders (pina colada, strawberry daiquiri, etc.), all of which had great presentation and tasted as expected. The menu offers a wide array of cocktail options and Chinese and Japanese cuisine (everything from sesame chicken to sashimi). They brought some hot oolong tea to the table (mmmmm) while we decided on our meals and then proceeded to take our orders. One of our fellow Yelpers asked for a quick substitution on an item, which required a few back-and-forth visits to the manager for an official answer (which ended up being "no"). Still, no big deal and so our fellow diner decided on another menu option. We handed over the menus and our waitress then brought over the crispy noodles (love that salty crunch) along with the standard spicy mustard and duck sauce (all of which again tasted exactly as would be expected at a Chinese restaurant). About 15 minutes later our food came to the table hot and fresh. I had ordered sliced chicken with broccoli, which had an excellent flavor. The chicken was cooked just right and the broccoli had a slight crunch. The sauce was also very flavorful. Around the table, others ordered chicken teriyaki (looked great although had less teriyaki sauce than normal), spicy tuna rolls, salmon and salmon rolls. Although everything else tasted great, the salmon rolls tasted off, so the guest who ordered it sent it back without eating more than a bite. When it came time to pay the bill, we saw that we were still being charged for the salmon rolls that were sent back. Again, a quick fix and no big deal. The waitress went over to the manager and then came back for clarification, then went back to the manager again. After a minute or two, the waitress came back with the manager, who apologized and said they couldn't take the extra white rice we ordered off the bill (nobody said anything about white rice). We clarified that we had been asking about the salmon rolls we sent back because they didn't taste right, and he seemed confused and upset. After some convincing, he went and took the salmon rolls off the bill (total time of this incident was around 10 minutes). A few minutes later we probably would have just decided it not worth the hassle and coughed up the dough. In the meantime, we enjoyed the complimentary citrus fruit and fortune cookies brought to the table. Some of the fruit was a little tart, but the fortunes (as always) were entertaining. Overall, the service really was a miss. We would occasionally ask for something (i.e. an extra duck sauce or a refill on waters) that was often forgotten or take longer than usual (3-5 minutes) to get around to. Granted, the restaurant was fairly empty (maybe about 5-10 parties total dining in). Other than the food and service, the ambiance of this place is great. There are several booths along the wall and many tables in between. The place is kept fairly clean and you'll find a lot of Chinese decor around the restaurant. Would I come back to this Jani location? Sure. It just wouldn't be first on my list. read more

Jani is one of our favorite places to go for celebration dinners or just a regular night dining out. We've been going here for years and have always had exceptional dining experiences. Tonight was no different, we were seated immediately, our server was friendly and attentive and the food arrived at the table so fast! We ordered pork lo mein, chicken and vegetables and sesame beef and everything was fresh and cooked exactly as we imagined. Love this place. I have been to Long Island around 5 times and everytime I go and crave Asian food, we get Jani's and it has yet to disappoint me. This time we got it delivered and it took less than an hour to get to us. We ordered the Orange chicken, some sushi and chow mein. I love how they also give you table noodles with your food. They don't do that where I am from, which is a nice little treat. We have a 3 and 4 year old and they even love Jani's. Traditional Chinese-American sit-down restaurant with friendly waiters and white table cloths. Everything we ordered was served fresh and delicious. We especially loved their scallion pancakes and fried dumplings. My Szechuan Chicken had the perfect amount of spice. Our waiter served us with a smile and kept our glasses full. The food there deserves 5 stars, but because of the service they're lucky they are getting 3. Been going to Jani for years, it's a hangout spot for my friends and I, we love the food, BUT whenever we go we always have a horrible experience with the staff, which is a huge turnoff. The waiters and waitresses always try to rush us out and make us feel unwelcome. I mean the place is always empty, it isn't like they need the space. Today was kind of the last straw because my boyfriend and I ordered Jani (note we are 2 college students, safe to say we aren't rolling in cash). When the delivery guy came, we already paid on card over the phone but didn't have enough for tip. When the guy came to the door he was very rude to my boyfriend and cursed him out in his language. I have been going to this restaurant for roughly 10 years and I never had a problem. I went to The restaurant tonight and I would say the restaurant was half full. We asked for a booth but he told us we had to sit at a table. We saw that there were at least 5 empty booths and nobody was waiting to be seated. We then proceeded to tell him we wanted a booth and he said NO and we left. I cannot believe that they would make us leave especially being that there were so many booths available and nobody waiting. We will no longer be going and we will tell all our friends to stop going. Chinese / Japanese for the masses. I have never understood the attraction that this chain of Asian restaurants has but to be sure, all the locations are usually packed with diners thinking they are getting some good Chinese or Japanese fare. In reality, the food is pretty suck-ass. The ubiquitous fried noodles were disgustingly greasy - my bowels were churning just looking at them. The BBQ platter on the specials list was unavailable - and the restaurant just wasn't that busy so there is no way they ran out - but coincidentally the higher priced pu-pu platter was available. Go figure. The mains were bland all around - I have a better take out place in my town! I sampled some of the sushi and again- it all seemed bleh. The texture was on the mushy side and the presentation was no where as appealing as you get at a Japanese place. They have basically dumbed down the menu for the Gweilo who don't have a clue what good Chinese or Japanese should be. The place was nicely set up though, with enough Asian decorations but not so much that you get sensory overload. The place is amazingly noisy - and it was not even half full. Not a first date place! Overall, pretty poor. Food is tasteless. I ordered twice cooked pork after a long discussion with the waiter about what was good. It was supposed to be spicy but the sauce had virtually no flavor. It was dark brown and slimy from the corn starch but was tasteless. The waiter took it back to the kitchen then returned a few minutes later. It was slightly better but still little flavor and no spices. I told the waiter that and he argued with me saying it was spicy! It's not cheap compared to other chinese restaurants so look elsewhere. I wasn't impressed with any aspect of the meal. Everything tasted like a toned down version of what I normally eat. The dumplings were less dumpling-esque. The spicy tuna roll wasn't particularly spicy or tuna-ish. The General's Chicken commanded more like a Lieutenant. Jani is what I like to call "soft food." Nothing pops or sticks in your mind. I'm a fan of Jani's. My family likes this place a lot. We go especially for lunch considering they have GREAT prices on Chinese and Japanese food. It's a dual fusion kind of restaurant and have many options for both. This restaurant is fairly big and the decorations are pretty neat. There are mirrors on the ceiling, big comfy leather booths and cute teapots lining the walls of the place. My usual lunch there is either the chicken with garlic sauce or chicken with walnuts. They have the best hot and sour soup... extra spicy. And the wonton isn't bad either. They give you a big nice pot of hot tea and big crunchy noodles. In the Japanese area I've had their chicken teriyaki... but I usually stick to the Chinese food. You can get a good lunch there for around $6-$8 easily. Oh and can't forget those fortune cookies. Here's the funny thing: So whenever I go here with my mother or my grandmother they always seem to treat us differently. We laugh because we think it's because we "traditionally" don't have a man eating with us. And also because they always give us the broken noodles... like the leftovers no one wants. We have been going to this place for a long time. Both take out and sit down. We are good for at least $60.00 a week if not more if we have drinks for sure. This past week we ordered takeout I asked for extra duck sauce like I normally do and they gave me this tiny little cup full. Not even enough to fill the bowl they give you on the table when you sit. When I asked for more I was told I need to pay for it. I asked why don't I pay for it when we dine inside? The girl told me because the waitress made a mistake. Now mind you a lot of the food we ordered required duck sauce including the packaged house noodles that we pay for. We are always there and they ALWAYS give us as much as we want. We don't even ask sometimes they just bring it. Because I was short on time I paid to the $2.50 and left. Got home called the Manager Weng and he told us that is how it works. Extra anything cost extra. In this instance this was NOT extra it was part of our meals. His exact words were "the value of a penny". Asked Weng if he was ok with losing a weekly customer over $2.50 and he said "it comes down to the value of a penny and that is just my opinion". The Take out lady in the background explaining the story to Weng and she said it was final and he supported her and the charge for the $2.50 for a customer who is there once or twice a week. Point here it isn't about a customer complaining about the $2.50 it is the principle of the way the Weng as the Manager handled the situation and made the customer out to be wrong over $2.50. Rather than Weng offering to have the owner call us back to discuss his decision was a final one. Unfortunately we will no longer support this business and we will find another Chinese restaurant they are a dime a dozen out there. There are plenty out there. We will spend our weekly $100 plus somewhere else. Thank you Mr. Weng, explain this one to your boss. That is $400 plus a month lost on one family and we will not be recommending this place to our friends and family anymore. And we will let them know about our experience so they do not have the same problem over nonsense and bad management. read more

Her response was that they cannot control what someone posted online 20 years ago. I was looking at their website so this left me confused. Three of us went to Jani's in Wantagh. The host was very friendly. He asked us if we wanted a table or booth. Both looked very inviting - white linen table clothes & white napkins in the water glasses. This was our first time at Jani,s. We chose a booth which was very comfortable. The restaurant is is tastefully decorated. We ordered the lunch special. Two ordered the General's Chicken. I ordered Chicken with black bean sauce. Everyone was happy with their entrees. I really enjoyed the Chicken with black bean sauce. It is delicious & very filling. I actually did not have to eat anything else after lunch! We all had the combo of Wonton Egg Drop soup. No complaints! The lunch special is from $8 to $10 depending on your entree. The service was not good. Only the host was friendly& smiled. We had to send back the tea which was very watery. The second pot was good. The table was not fully set up - no condiments. I would dine there again. You can't beat the price for good Chinese food. read more

I never had a worst dinning service in my life. The waitress gave us only 2 minutes after we sat down to give our orders. She walked away when we were in the middle of giving our orders. Every five minutes she would come to our table and ask if we were done (6 times) even though it was an hour before the restaurant was supposed to close. She tried to take my sister's plate before she was done eating and rolled her eyes when she told her she wanted to finish it. On top it all she was speaking loud in Chinese to her coworkers and left before we finished our meal. I really think the whole experience was rude and made me anxious to finish my meal as quickly as possible. read more

Very good food. Traditional Chinese restaurant decor and setting. Taste is old school without being too greasy, and prices are fair. However, they are VERY stingy with rice. They give you a small dish which is not enough. I ordered the hot and spicy bean curd, which has a lot of sauce and its served in a skillet with a stew-like consistency. I asked for another bowl of rice - and they charged us $1.50! That is beyond tacky, and is really a fly in the ointment for this place. Took two stars away based on that alone.
