Teng's Restaurant on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown. Real-deal Indo-Chinese food made by a Chinese chef from India.
    Dan's Grub Adventures G.

***INDO-CHINESE FLAVOR BOMB IN YOUR MOUTH*** ***SUPER FRIENDLY FAMILY-RUN RESTAURANT*** INDO-CHINESE? In the early 1800's a large number of Chinese citizens, immigrated to Calcutta, a city in the northern part of India, close to China. After becoming established, many of these immigrants started opening restaurants to support themselves. And then, because of a lack of certain ingredients, and to tailor the food to the palates of the Indian citizens, these Chinese chefs altered their recipes. And these new recipes, incorporated certain Indian spices, and a heavier use of spices and sauces - which made these new style dishes especially appealing - and created what is known today as Indo-Chinese, or Indian-style Chinese food. MASTER CHEF MIKE TENG Mike Teng, son of Hakka Chinese parents, was born and raised in India. He started cooking at 14, and eventually became a head chef preparing Indo-Chinese food in Mumbai. Then in 1984, he emigrated to the US and worked in the restaurant industry, until he became executive chef at the famous Jade Eatery & Lounge in Forrest Hills Queens. And it was here that he became notorious for his unique cuisine, and went on to receive numerous accolades. A DIFFERENT APPROACH After seven years of grueling work at Jade, Mike decided to take a break from the restaurant industry for a while. Then in 2019 he opened Teng's Restaurant, and set up operations in a way that would minimize work. As such, the restaurant would only open for dinner, between 4-11 PM, and there would be minimal table service. So let me explain how this works: You sit down at a table, and a friendly family member takes you order and helps with recommendations if necessary. And then you grab paper plates & cups, and plastic utensils from a shelf by the front counter. There's also a refrigerator here with drinks to choose from. And then the food is served to you at the table in take-out style containers. THE KEY TO ORDERING HERE There are a relatively large number of items on the menu, but most of the dishes can be broken down into a few different styles, such as Hakka Chili, Manchurian, Salt And Pepper, Orange, Szechuan, Basil, Kung Pao, and Ginger & Scallion. And the key to ordering here is to avoid choosing multiple dishes in the same style, as the meal & flavors can become one-note in nature. But if your vigilant, and pick some of the best items from each style, you will be rewarded with an Indo-Chinese flavor bomb in your mouth. FIRST TIME? GIVE THESE A SHOT So a few recommendations to try on a first visit, if you're able to enjoy spicy foods would be: - Hakka Chili Style Chicken or Beef - Salt and Pepper Style Fish Filets or Chicken - Orange Chicken or Kung Pao Chicken - Manchurian Style Fish or Chicken - General Tso's Chicken or Tofu - Ginger and Scallion Chicken - Szechuan Wontons or Momos - Orange Glazed Wings or Hakka Chili Wings - Basil Fried Rice - Hakka Noodles And here's a few vegetable recommendations: - Manchurian style Cauliflower or Salt and Pepper Cauliflower - Szechuan Potato or Potato with Black Bean Sauce - Spicy Stir Fried String Beans. - Mapo Tofu - Manchow Soup with or without meat YOU'RE PROBABLY GONNA LOVE THIS PLACE After many visits here with dozens of different people, I've noticed first-timers always react the same way when trying one of chef Teng's best dishes. Their eyes open wide, and the head starts slowly shaking side-to-side, and then I hear grunts of mmm! or wow! I mean really, it never fails to be a wonderful surprise for everyone. But don't get me wrong, not everything on the menu is a home run. For example, some of the Asian fusion dishes such as Pad Thai or Mango Chicken are just weird. So even though there are some things to overlook here, such as no lunch service, or the cafeteria style vibe, If you choose some of the chef's best dishes, for sure that flavor bomb is going to hit you right in the mouth, and you'll definitely be coming back here for more. I always do.

The food was amazing! The spice level was just right, and everything was fresh, hot, and full of flavor. The service was quick and efficient, even though the place was busy. The ambience is simple .things are served in disposable plate but honestly, when the food is this good, that doesn't matter. The portions were generous, and for this order, we spent $55, which was very fair. Highly recommended! The dishes truly capture the authentic Indo-Chinese flavors, which is rare to find.

This is not the kind of place that am used to going, it's set up as a food to go place, but it is a nice restaurant inside, you get in find a seat and look at the menu, once you decide on your choices, you go up to the counter and let them know, then you wait to be served. Oh, I forgot, you now have to go to the front of the restaurant and get your eating materials, they have paper plates, bowls and plastic forks ,knives and spoons, then you bring those to your table, once the food is brought to you (in plastic to-go plates, you eat, the food was actually good, the service was friendly and helpful. The place looks nice and clean. Overall a different experience but good. We will return.

The food here is good. I ordered the Hakka Chilli Chicken which comes with rice and fried chicken wings (not spicy). The place has a few tables to sit down but I ordered takeout. The people were still friendly and quick. I would definitely come back!

Best halal Chinese food. I've had many things from their menu, and for the most part, they've been really good. The soups and noodle dishes are delicious. Always fresh! It is a bit on the oily side, that's the only downside. Love this place!

Manchurian rice, already eaten chicken Pakora, fried chicken wings , Hakka chili wings ! What a great night with delicious food !

What happened to Tengs ! I was there when they started off and fell in love with the husband and wife owners that always have a bright smile and a warm hello with my actual name which took me back a little because I had only ordered there twice at that time ! I had to go away for a while and now I come back to Tengs 3.0 I fell in love with them all over again when I walked in and it was like no Time had went by. I look at their newest menu and everything sounds delicious today in the picture is Manchurian rice (DELICIOUS someone ate a top layer off right before the picture ), chicken pakora app(Sorry these are the only ones that made it on the ride home I tried not to eat any for a picture but my will is weak when it comes to food ) fried chicken, wings app(none eaten ) , Hakka chili wings app(none eaten) . When I say everything tasted delicious I was amazed they have the flavor profiles down with an attractive look and a good amount of good (3 of the dishes are apps the rice is a regular size ) . You can adjust your spice tell them nuclear and guaranteed you'll wonder why you hate yourself so much ! They don't skimp on the sauces which I love and they have never mixed up an order of mine or not put in the included sauces to date which is not something I say about many restaurants! I'm glad to see them growing give them a try I can't wait to order catering a full tray of that delicious rice ! When you go there Tell them Bills YELP said to ask for their hot oil and oh not so spicy Chili's in vinegar! careful they didn't look bad to me until it hit the back of my tongue and then instant regret ! There is a small seating area for dining, it's decorated very nicely and very clean. They are across the street from Tri county in Levittown ! Definitely worth a try !

Teng's has some pretty solid halal Chinese spot and I'm glad that they're located in Nassau County. I will say that there are definitely standouts amongst the dishes which would include the hakka chili chicken and the chicken with mixed vegetables. I would pass on items such as the beef with garlic sauce as it had way too many onions. Basically, solely stick to the best sellers here and you're in for a solid meal.

Elevated Chinese Takeout This isn't your average Chinese takeout. You can dine in and all the utensils napkins and cutlery are on the wall opposite the counter. Their General Tso's chicken got some serious umami going on. It's garlic heavy and so delicious. Their string beans are also delicious and perfectly cooked. The scallion pancakes are light and the crispy chewy flaky layers are delightful. Health conscious customers might want to take a napkin and pat down the excess oil off. The sweet soy sauce dip for the pancakes is on point. If you like it spicy I'd ask for hot oil. The hot oil is flavorful and has a level of depth that other Chinese takeouts don't have. Their plain fried chicken wings are finger licking delicious. The batter is light and crunchy. The meat is seasoned quite well with the perfect amount of salt. It comes with a tamarind sauce, which I thoroughly enjoyed dipping the wings in that sweet and slightly sour goodness. I also had their shrimp fried rice, again not your average shrimp fried rice. Everything here is elevated and the prices are reasonable as well. Upon request they'll give you hot oil and yummy little pickled peppers for pleasant palate cleansers. This joint is a family fave and we are hooked.

We happened on this place on a Friday evening on NY. The person behind the counter welcomed to order at the counter and to be seated to be served. The selection was a good variety. The food was fresh, hot, and came out quickly. We had one shrimp fried rice, chicken and broccoli, and sesame chicken. I detected that the oil they use is a little heavy. Not, that the food was oily but the oil is a thick/heavy oil. Anyways, overall pretty good. Also, the place was small but clean.

Staff was friendly. Food was very salty. In addition, the food was being served boiling hot in plastic containers which is not safe.

I couldn't get a refund because the restaurant had already accepted my order -- and since I was the one who cancelled, Uber Eats treated it as a voluntary cancellation. No refund. This restaurant seems like a scam: they accept orders on days they're closed and pocket free money. -------- Updated: I contacted the store through Instagram, and they acknowledged the issue and refunded me via Zelle. 3.5 Stars for their lunch specials!…read more This was our first visit, and we only ordered a salad and two lunch specials. I would definitely come back to try other items from their regular menu. I found the entrees in the lunch special a little skimpy. These are the dishes we shared: -- Papaya Salad ($12): this is from their regular menu, and I thought it was excellent! Well balanced and so tasty! -- Drunken Noodles w.Beef (Lunch Special $14.95): this came with a Spring Roll and your choice of either Soup or Salad. We chose the Soup, which was a Tom Yum Soup. The Soup was very spicy but the Drunken Noodles were very mild; almost bland. It definitely needed more flavors and wok hei, but still ok. -- Massaman Curry w.Shrimp (Lunch Special $14.95): this came with a Spring Roll and your choice of either Soup or Salad. We chose the Salad, which came with a Peanut sauce. The Salad was actually pretty good; the peanut sauce was slightly sweet. The Massaman Curry w.Shrimp was very weak in flavor and only came with 3 little shrimps. I would suggest you order a different protein and skip the shrimp. Customer service was good; albeit there was nobody to greet us when we first arrived, so we just seated ourselves. But service got better. They didn't rush us to order and let us linger after we finished eating. But after a while, we were asked to leave since they close the restaurant in between the lunch and dinner service (between 3:30-4:30pm). Sorry, we were not aware of this! All in all, a decent first experience. Next time, I'd skip the lunch specials and just order off their regular menu.
