    July 2025 menu and prices
    Carolyn R.

When I see a quaint cafe that does high volume, and only open for breakfast and lunch, you know they are doing something right. Met up here with a group of 15 women from our women's group on a Tuesday morning at 11:30am. We called weeks in advance to ask if they could accommodate a group of this size giving them the day of the week and proposed time of day and they said they could. A week before, we called again to remind them we were coming next week thinking this reminder would assure proper staffing. It appeared it did not. Called the day before to give a final headcount of 15. When we arrived and checked in, the hostess seemed to have some tables in mind along the far wall, as the restaurant isn't huge, but the wall length banquette and tables were filled by patrons, so we had to wait. A party of six got up to leave, so we were able to push two tables together to get our seating started, and as ladies continued to arrive the other tables eventually opened up, but there was some awkward squished seating until they did. Our server was friendly although she seemed a bit flustered getting ready to take on this large group. I didn't catch her name. She brought us waters and gave us time to look at the menu, but honestly she needed to attend to her other tables and eventually close them out before she ever took our order, so there was some waiting and we were hungry. Once she took our 15 orders, there was some more waiting, drinks needed refilling, some were refilled others forgotten altogether. I forget specifically what I asked or said to her, but she replied with "oh, I haven't even put your food orders in yet"! WHAT?!! Here's where Janet's Cafe showed some breakdown. Our one server needed some support, and although every staff member was working in their capacities, it seems there could have/should have been a more efficient way to handle service. So what typically happens once the food is brought out to the table, you have the "can I get a side of ranch, we need extra napkins, I'm missing silverware, or I ordered onion rings and was given fries" scenarios, right? Our server should have stopped, got out her pad and went down the entire table noting what was needed or missing instead of trying to remember. She did not, so some things were remedied and some had to be asked for again or many times only flustering her more. When you have a group and the food does not come out all together by multiple servers, we tell them "go ahead and start eating while it's still hot", as the food comes out in handfuls. In this case, the first person served was just about done eating her meal by the time the last lady got her meal delivered to the table. The Food: The food was wonderful! Everyone enjoyed their meal. The food quality, freshness and portions were top notch. Everything from a traditional egg breakfast to the Daily Special, French dip sandwiches, Club sandwich, soup and salads, and sides (the onion rings were awesome) everything was delicious! I also know Janet herself was cooking that day. As mentioned by other reviewers, menu prices are a tad high, but as also mentioned by others, what isn't these days? Many of us took home leftovers, so count that as part of it. Overall, this is a great place to eat! It seems there are many happy patrons, and I am now certainly one of them and won't hesitate to go back again. I hope my feedback was helpful for both you the reader and the restaurant owners/staff. I'm including photos of the current menu prices and a couple food items.

Another great visit today at Janet's. Decided to sit at the bar today so we didn't have to wait for a table. Keller, our server came and grabbed our drinks while we were looking over the menu. It was my daughter's first time there so she needed a minute to look over the menu. He was nice and didn't rush us. Orders were finally taken and we enjoyed the scene while our food was being prepared. Today I ordered the chicken fried steak. Of course I had to get the country potatoes again. The country potatoes were nice and chunky! They were cooked perfectly. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I love dipping them on the country gravy. The country fried steak was crispy on the outside and so savory in the middle. It was topped with a good amount of the country gravy. My eggs were cooked perfectly! My toast could have used another round of toasting but it was still tasty cause of the butter they slapped on it! It was such a hearty meal I was only able to eat half of it. This place is buzzin no matter the hour. Clearly they have a good crowd for lunch besides just breakfast. I can see why! The staff is always friendly and the venue is so comfy and welcoming. This place has put other joints in the valley on alert. From the food to the staff, this place is what other local joints should model after. And shout out to Keller for our amazing service! Service like today's makes eating out nice. It's refreshing to have good service! Now a days good service feels like a rare occasion.

Opened July'ish 2024 (in space that was once Dickie's BBQ) by owners who have these Janet's breakfast and lunch cafe(s) in San Diego with this being their first in Idaho.   We had high expectations going in for breakfast based on early Yelp reviews. Although it is nearer our home than alternatives it is unlikely we'll be back soon based on 3-star food experience with that meal.  The 4th star is for friendly people, sparkling clean space and a broad menu of options so maybe lunch will work better. A handwritten sign in the window indicates they are hiring for positions from cook through server so this suggests there may be some hiccups (there were) to be patient about (we were and the server thanked us for same before we left) as they get into their groove.   VIBE:  Blue booths, some tables and chairs, rustic finishes, light and bright from front windows that face the parking lot.  Sparkling clean in the way that says pride of ownership.  No TVs.  Yahoo!  If there was music on the sound system, I don't remember it being there and that is a good thing because it means it wasn't intruding on our conversation. Yahoo times two!  SERVICE:  Greeted as we entered.   They weren't too busy at  mid-morning on a week day and while our server arrived promptly to introduce himself and offer us coffee, it was a long wait until he returned to take our breakfast order.  No worries, we were enjoying time together.   In the meantime, we noticed our server was also taking walk-in coffee drink to go orders at the host stand since no one was there.  (That's a process they probably need to work on so table servers don't have to do that.)  When he was able to get back to us to take our order, we had a couple of questions about the menu. Some he could answer, others not but volunteered to get the information leading to more delay.  New place, new servers and that's not unexpected.   Once the order was taken, it arrived from the kitchen much more quickly than we expected it would.   FOOD:  Our experience was huge portions of bland food. I ordered eggs over hard, one of them had a runny yolk which means I couldn't eat it, crispy bacon and it was but also room temp'ish as if cooked and held.  For the go-with options I chose hash browns, a very large portion was on the plate and cooked through but no flavor (even salt in the kitchen would have helped), and what was listed as buttermilk biscuit that I was told was house made.  I have no doubt that the giant thing that arrived was baked on site, but it was dense in a way that didn't match my expectations for flakey buttermilk biscuit.  Noting the runny yolked egg didn't match my order, the server offered to have the kitchen cook another one.  No worries, I said, too late now but as feedback for the kitchen, over hard means hard yolks.   The dish was $16.50. My hubby's short stack of pancakes ($11) was two huge pancakes which he said were fine to be tender but he ate only one given size.  Real maple syrup is not available to order and the pancake syrup provided in a small ramekin had little maple flavor. Although a nice woman who came by our table told him it was "more than 50% maple" and she said she would "check the can" to see what else was in it, he told her no worries because knew enough at that point.  He said he would happily pay an upcharge for the real thing, as offered that way by some others, if they had it. The server said several customers had made that suggestion. It is not that the food is bad because there are a lot of chain eateries that would deliver similar things.  But huge portions of these kinds of things are not our thing.  Different strokes for different taste buds. Then we get to the blackberry pie, of which we ordered a slice ($6.50) to go.  It was not good. They may be putting pie filling into a crust in the kitchen but when we ate the pie that night, a huge slice easily divided in two, there were maybe 5 whole blackberries in the entire thing among a thick dark purple, seeming cornstarch thickened glob that suggests filling taken from a can.  Not that there's anything wrong with that as chains do it but it is not what we expected when we asked on the way in if the pies were house made and the hostess said they were.  PARKING: Private lot in this sort of stripmall'ish location. ACCESSIBILITY: ADA parking is near the door but the strip mall owner has let the blue paint marking it as such erode from the spots and has not put the required signage on the building so it isn't evident. All on one floor inside and ample floor space throughout. A few tables that would work for customers using wheelchairs. I didn't check the loo but one assumes given this was built for first occupancy post 1993 (when ADA rules and ID Accessibility code both apply) they are accessible.

Food: we ordered a bit of everything and the best overall part was the pancakes. OMG! 10/10. Service: fast, attentive and knowledgeable servers (as this was our first time). Ambiance: modern cabin vibes. Such a cute spot. Worth coming and trying it out. Ample areas to sit and also ample space to sit and wait if needed.

Waffle and fruit breakfast special with a side of eggs and bacon

We arrived for lunch at 11:30 on a Sunday...bad idea. Place was packed and it took 40 minutes to be seated for a party of 4. The entry door needs to have the pneumatics fixed...it was not fun to sit there hearing it slam repeatedly. We were seated and unfortunately had to watch a party of 13 that arrived after us be seated first. This led to 16 minutes before anyone acknowledged us at the booth. We watched as 4 other parties seated after us received service before us as well. Not a good start. Once we were able to receive service, it was relatively quick and friendly, with prompt drink refills (except for coffee-those were infrequent). I ordered the Country bacon and cheese omelet special which comes with 2 sides-ordered home fries and sourdough toast. Received the omelet and hash browns which was incorrect. Since it had already been almost 45 minutes since we sat down I just settled. The hash browns were woefully undercooked and with the omelet and gravy, the plate was a mushy, yet delicious, pile of goo (the gravy saved it). The sourdough was perfectly toasted and was slathered with butter-fantastic. Hubby loved his open-faced hot turkey sandwich. Friends had the waffle and fruit and were very happy with their order. They are obviously understaffed for the demand, so hopefully once people are hired, trained and there's better table turn-over in place, I believe this place will be exceptional. The food was actually quite good, a tad on the expensive side ($90 for 4 people?!), but would try again....a few months down the road.

This is a great neighborhood eatery. The menu features a wide selection of breakfast and lunch options, including omelettes, country breakfasts, and dishes with a south-of-the-border flair. Breakfast is served all hours (but they close at 2), allowing folks to indulge in their morning favorites at any time (to 2pm). The commitment to quality is evident in every dish, with many recipes passed down through generations, ensuring a homestyle dining experience that is both comforting and tasty.

Great food good prices, but bring an appetite. Some of their servings are large. Homemade pies muffins, cinnamon rolls very tasty. This is a breakfast lunch venue very tasty.

For some reason, we were seated in a corner booth near the bathrooms, while other customers were seated elsewhere in the restaurant. We didn't mind, however, because it was nice and quiet. And, for me, convenient. My wife had the Sirloin Salad, and I had the Ahi Poke Salad. My wife said that her meat was cooked the way she likes it, and the rest of the ingredients were delicious. For me, the ahi, sesame vinaigrette dressing, wonton strips, onions, and greens were very good. The food is always good at The Tavern. And, the prices are reasonable. Unlike our past experiences, the service this time around was not up to our usual. Our server, Hannah C., seemed in a rush and impatient. Though she told us to ask her if we had questions, I didn't find her responses to be pleasant. The first dish my wife was interested in had Boursin cheese. My wife had not heard of it, and she cannot eat a lot of cheese. She preferred something milder, like mozarella. When she inquired of Hannah, the reply was terse. "We don't have mozarella." "Do you have another milder cheese?" "Like what?" Not in a nice way, and not professional, in my opinion. And, she was loud. We waited longer than usual for our food, and when Hannah brought it, she just dropped the plates and split. To her credit, she did check in on us once during our meal. Now I don't know what kind of day Hannah was having. Maybe not so good. I don't know what kind of person she is, and I'll give her the benefit of the doubt that she is a nice woman. Hopefully she is not like how she was with us to all of her customers. I'm a 20% tipper. For her, it was 18%. I wasn't given a choice, but I would have gone down to 15%.

The only minor nitpick: The salsa that came with the burrito tasted a lot like store-bought Pace Picante. It was fine, but in a place with such great food overall, homemade authentic salsa would take it to the next level. All in all, a solid spot with good portions, welcoming vibes, and tasty breakfast options. We'll definitely be back--highly recommend! P.S. It was a bit too cold and we left our jackets on.

They really lean into the whole "bringing California brunch culture to Idaho" thing, so maybe my expectations were too high going in. But honestly... this was a pretty rough experience for me. I ordered the huevos rancheros because what feels more California brunch than that? When my plate came out, it looked weirdly plain and honestly kind of sad. Then my friend's huevos rancheros arrived and hers had all the toppings, sauces, avocado, etc. So apparently mine was missing half the dish. When I politely asked about it, I got a surprisingly snarky response that immediately made the whole thing uncomfortable. I really don't think I was rude about it at all. But the part that genuinely grossed me out was the mimosa tower situation. Two of the four glasses at our table literally had lipstick stains on them, and the others were cloudy/smudgy enough that we noticed immediately. That's the kind of thing you can't unsee once it's sitting at your table. I honestly don't really understand the hype because this place is constantly packed. Maybe we just caught them on an off day, but between the mediocre food, awkward service interaction, and dirty glassware, I don't think I'll be back. I'd personally rather wait for a table at The Griddle or have a calmer breakfast at Rembrandt's instead.
