This place was one of the highlights while staying in Durango for 3 weeks. You can sit down outside under a beautiful apricot tree and enjoy a delicious meal, while taking in the views of the mountains. The menu is small and simple. I believe everything is supplied by their ranch. They even make their own cheese- a style of cheddar. The little store has fresh produce, berries form their garden, delicious caramels, cheeses, crackers, different cuts of meat, and lots more. The lady working behind the counter was sweet to us every time and very patient. I never got to try the steak sandwich, it runs out fast so be there early. The mushroom burger was top notch, however. The beet salad was tasty and fresh. Thank you for a great experience. read more

The burgers are bomb! SUPER FRESH! The fries are fantastic as well. They are pretty pricey though. 50 bucks for two burgers, a large fry, and one adult beverage is pretty steep. I was a little bummed by the size of the burger as it was on the smaller side. Was also a little bummed by the size of the menu. Amazing food, amazing service, amazing ambiance! We visited for the 4th of July and there was an incredible live band. It was crowded, but we we're still able to comfortably find seating and get our food quickly. The walking tour of the ranch was great and there is a mini petting zoo with goats! Been visiting James Ranch Grill yearly the past 5 years. Service and quality has decreased consistently each year and the past visit 2 weeks ago was terrible. The quality of our food was nothing short of atrocious- literally a hunk of bad meat topped on a stale bun and unripe tomato all for the bargain price of $20. What an incredible spot! We were so pleased with this place. We read the reviews beforehand and it sounded right up our alley already but it did not disappoint. We went on the 4th of July and planned for a late lunch. The ambiance was so nice (plus the incredible live music) that we stayed and made a whole evening out of it. Only giving 2 stars because location is beautiful. This is quite possibly the most inefficient restaurant experience I have ever had. You have to wait in line to order before doing anything else, and only one person was taking orders so that took 20 minutes (for reference there was only 6 people in front of us). Then you have to go wait in a separate line to get your drink if you ordered anything other than water, and that took 10 minutes. So, for those of you counting, 30 minutes in and just finally getting drinks. Now the burger, first, I ordered medium rare and there was no pink at all, second there was definitely a lot of fat on it and not as lean as I would expect, lastly, it was not seasoned at all and was extremely bland. The bun was definitely not homemade and was just bad; they also put like 1/4 a teaspoon of their house sauce on the burger unlike their pictures. For 14 dollars I expect better. I also expect at least some table service for food that expensive. If you are looking for a quality burger in Durango for less, you are better off just going to Grassburger. read more

There can't be many other businesses, anywhere, that are as well suited for COVID as James Ranch. Even the newer enclosed restaurant has ample, shaded deck seating with lots of space between tables. What We Liked: the patty melt was outstanding, it is easily the best burger I've bought in 2020. Here's why: -large, maybe 1/2 lb. fresh, juicy patty with grass-fed flavor -properly caramelized onions, not just grilled or sautéed -fresh tomato and herb-flavored mayo -soft, focaccia-style bread with fried cheese cracker and here's the tip: eat it upside down from how it's served, so the cracker and all the fixings are on the bottom and much easier to taste all at once. The fingerling fries were tender and generous with the sea salt, rosemary, and olive oil. What we didn't like: I've been coming here for two years, saying something each time, and STILL no diet soda or fizzy water on the menu. Some of us are trying to get off soda and still need that carbonated sensation! Overall: this place is a gem. Combining a trip to James Ranch with a jaunt across the street to Honeyville, after a day up in the hills around Hermosa, is one of the best experiences to have in the Durango area. read more

Two dry mediocre sandwiches, cold greasy fries and two ice teas cost over $50 plus a tip for doing absolutely nothing. Very rude young lady with long reddish hair who replied, "I need your credit card, HONEY," when I asked for barbecue sauce. She abruptly said that I could have the cheap yellow mustard or ketchup on my sandwich (which was cold by now) but had to pay extra for barbecue sauce. I just skipped it but her rude and condescending attitude was inexcusable. Go somewhere else for decent food and service at a reasonable price where you are treated with respect. Stopped here because of the reviews. We were really looking for a good burger. Ordered a basic Burger and their local special Burger which had caramelized onions and cheese and an aioli on it. Never had anything so bland in my entire life. The meat wasn't seasoned, there wasn't enough caramelized onions to even give it flavor, ordered cheese on the basic Burger never showed up on the burger. Ordered a large fingerling fry, though they were good they were still way under seasoned. I don't know if grass-fed means under season but it was definitely there. This place is fantastic! I got the mushroom burger and added a runny egg, yum! Such a juicy, fresh, flavorful burger! We also tried the apple slaw (delicious), the fries (amazing, my fave fries Iv ever had I think) and the non alcoholic specialty sodas which I think were the funnest part of the dinner. We had the coconut, cherry cream and blood orange, all of which were so delicious, refreshing and unique.
