James Ranch is a terrific stop if you're in the Durango area. The grounds are beautiful to walk around, and it's exciting for the kids to get to see the animals. One of the days we were there they even had some goats near the restaurant in a small pen for the kids to iinteract with. You order your food when you arrive, and then they give you a buzzer to alert you and your food is ready to come back and pick it up. Overall it's a terrific spot. The food is good, but you have to really like hamburgers - because that's their specialty. I suggest calling ahead, because even though you can't make a reservation we have showed up and found busses and large groups of tours which cause significant delays in our ability to either order or receive our food. It's best to ask them which days they have groups coming in so you could avoid that. read more

We were pointed to this farm and grill by a Durango olive oil company employee. She wasn't kidding when she said the burgers are incredible! You can really taste how fresh the meat is!!! Want to eat farm-to-table food alfresco surrounded by the animals you are consuming? This is the place. Stopped here for dinner a few nights ago with a dozen friends. We had to spread out across two tables, but no problemo. We managed to snag two tables under the ramada in case it rained again while we were there. As shown in the menu photo below your choices are burgers, dogs and salads, but oh they are wonderful. The choices include a veggie burger so good, two of the vegetarians in our group had to order a second. Expect a line at prime time - we waited around 10 minutes to order. It's kind of "fast casual" where you get a number and they bring the food to your table. It took a while as we were there at the peak, around 30 minutes for our food to arrive, but it was worth waiting for. The beef is grass-fed and cooked to perfection. The cheese is made from on-premise cows. The tomato tasted like homegrown, not a hothouse piece of cardboard. I had a daily special, a green chile pico burger. Just enough avocado and pico de gallo for flavor, but it didn't overwhelm the patty. One gripe: they were out of the gluten-free buns when we were there. If you want what they have on their narrow menu, you won't find better food for 100 miles. read more

Heard great things and it was a very good experience. Tuesday night and there was a pretty long line but it moved fast. Able to find a table in the shade and had a nice dinner with the family. Live music was a nice touch. Food was very good - had hamburgers, grilled cheese, fries and chips. Pretty expensive for what you get but the quality was definitely there. Fantastic burgers. You can taste the caliber of high quality meat the moment you bite into your burger. The patty was juicy and tender. The fingerling potatoes were very good too. A little break from the normal French fry. The dining area both inside and outside were very nice. We initially sat outside on the picnic tables but the wind picked up and we didn't want dirt as a topping on our burgers. Loved seeing the goat and cows nearby. This place was highly recommended by a friend. It is a self serve place and it's very expensive. They said they cook their burgers pink throughout. Pink is fine...raw "Red" ground beef is not. It's over $15 for a burger that doesn't even include a side. In addition, we asked for some extra sauce and after spending $60 for 2 beers, 2 burgers, and 1 fry...they wanted to charge me for some more sauce. Way over priced especially when you have to order and do a pick up window. SO...,Disappointed. Never again!!!! Everything about this location was excellent except the BBQ Burger. I asked for medium and it tasted well done, so dry. It definitely needed the BBQ sauce to get it down. They need to add pork for more fat in the burger so it is more juicy or just a less lean meat like 85%. This was definitely not worth almost $20. What was excellent was the ambiance, outdoor seating with live music in the yard of the ranch with pine trees nicely spaced around and the picnic tables were spread apart well for privacy and pandemic precautions. read more

First - this pains me to write this. We visited James ranch twice during our week in Durango. First visit - fantastic. I would have told people people this was one of the best burgers I've ever had! Second visit on a Monday. Drink girl seems grumpy and frustrated for fixing your drinks. Bothers by asking for a lid. They said burgers are cooked to pink - our table of 10 all had way over cooked burgers and burned fries. It was just ok at best. All that to say, I think they just had an off night. It is as awesome now as it has ever been. Went back for the 1st time in a few years, they have expanded and built up a good bit but they are still able to maintain that great quality and service. The food here is really excellent. I had a burger, fingerling fries and a beet salad with goat cheese. All were prepared just as I had requested and looked and tasted delicious. We were here in Fall when the leaves had turned and the valley had amazing colors. Sitting out on the patio was a great experience. There's a also a picnic area in the back with tables and space for kids to run around. A beautiful space with a small farm and wonderful food. While the burgers are cooked to order but not exactly as requested (rare definitely comes as medium), the food is still absolutely fabulous. Plus, they have local wines and beers, all of which are delicious. There is indoor and outdoor seating, goats to pet, and housemade gluten free buns. What more could a girl ask for? Nothing. Ordering to delivery was 15 minutes. Error in delivery corrected in 3 minutes after first delivery. Meat was tender, veggies were fresh, and all were happy. Highly recommended. read more

We were on vacation last week in Durango and decided to try this place based on them being organic grass fed food. This place did not disappoint! The burgers were amazing! Mouthwatering flavor!! The potatoes/fries were so different but so yummy! And their tractor sodas were delicious! Also I tried their root beer float and it was hands down the best float I've ever had. I brought a couple pints of the ice cream that they used home with me! Also posting a good review in the ice cream company :) Basically, if you're in Durango, make sure to stop here!! Been visiting James Ranch Grill yearly the past 5 years. Service and quality has decreased consistently each year and the past visit 2 weeks ago was terrible. The quality of our food was nothing short of atrocious- literally a hunk of bad meat topped on a stale bun and unripe tomato all for the bargain price of $20. This place has truly become a tourist trap. If you are willing to sacrifice expensive low quality food for the ambiance, then this might be your place. I'll never return read more

This place was one of the highlights while staying in Durango for 3 weeks. You can sit down outside under a beautiful apricot tree and enjoy a delicious meal, while taking in the views of the mountains. The menu is small and simple. I believe everything is supplied by their ranch. They even make their own cheese- a style of cheddar. The little store has fresh produce, berries form their garden, delicious caramels, cheeses, crackers, different cuts of meat, and lots more. The lady working behind the counter was sweet to us every time and very patient. I never got to try the steak sandwich, it runs out fast so be there early. The mushroom burger was top notch, however.
