Started with one gentleman explaining how it worked cause it was my first time. 3 scoops of any of the two rices or 4 beans or however many. I wanted one rice and one black bean and one refried. He just scooped 2 rice in the one scoop of refried I asked for. I had said I wanted 1, 1, 1 didn't know it was extra and then continued to just talk rude about me to his coworkers as they all giggled in spanish. Maybe don't talk shit about the customer in Spanish, especially when it's a white boy that knows Spanish very well. Made me very uncomfortable. then up charged me and didn't just honor the mess up. One of the gentlemen was being nice and so I started talking in Spanish to him and so he was nice. Lady that checked me out, seemed to get mad at me for asking for another chip even though I got nachos and a naked burrito and they say it's free chips. I got two things, thought I would get two chips. It just was not respectful in any way, I hadn't been here before they knew that. But good way to have me not want to come back. Portions weren't impressive either. Food was good, but idk the way I was treated and spoken about right in front of my face was beyond disrespectful. And then to just up charge me still. Stopped in with my family for a bite. Plenty of seating and good ambiance. It's similar to chipotle as far as process and selections. But I say Zia has fresher ingredients. I got the bowl with black beans, whole grain rice and the carne asada. It was tasty and filling. I got their mango habanero salsa and chips and it was good as well. Stopped in here upon the recommendation of a friend of a friend, and we enjoyed our meals. The special that day was carnitas, so my wife tried it in a bowl, while I had two carnitas tacos. Very tasty, fresh ingredients, and the tortilla chips we ordered on the side were really good. There's a decent amount of seating in the light and bright interior. I appreciated that the menu explained the pretty high cost of the fish products (such as the fish tacos) due to supply chain issues, and that they plan to bring the price down again once that changes. Very nice touch. The carnitas special, though, was a really good deal. I would definitely stop in here again the next time I'm in Durango. read more

We had plan to skip the dinner due to super duper heavy buffet in downtown. But while evening walk , we stumbled on this restaurant. Not sure how but this trip to Durango has been food special. All our restaurant selections shined like anything. So , talking about this place. Insanely delicious and heck of cheap. So crowded but that's what talks about this restaurant being one of the best. We took salad bowl with baja fried fish. Best ever salad bowl we tried. Staff is super helpful. He went through and explained all the available options to customize the bowl and end output was damn finger licking. read more

Very popular local Chipotle-like restaurant. The food was all fresh and delicious. I liked it so much that I ate here twice! Friday night I had the "Friday Special" which was a bowl with spicy shrimp and black beans on cilantro lime white rice, with a Modelo Especial to drink. Saturday I had a bowl with Carne asada, black beans, white cilantro lime rice, lettuce, pico, guac, white cheese and chips, with another Modelo. I loved it because it was filling without it being greasy. These were healthy dinners after a day of hiking. read more

This is a must-do for anyone who hasn't tried this spot in Durango! We make a point to stop anytime we're in the area. There are several "build your own" options as well as some other items, like tamales and Baja tacos. I usually get a rice or salad bowl and load it with black beans, chicken, lettuce, cheese, and pico. I tried their salsa verde this time, which was really flavorful, but also quite spicy! I didn't mind, but it's definitely one of their hotter salsas. Some of my other favorite things to get here, though not pictured, are their quesadillas and burritos. The service here is always quick, so don't be deterred if the line seems long. They move through everyone quickly and there's usually plenty of seating, especially at this location. They also seem to have gotten a distillery on the upstairs level, though we didn't check that out. There's also a ton of parking compared to the other Zia's location, so we had no issues finding a space. Definitely don't miss this local Durango flavor! read more

After spending an event filled day driving incredible "Million Dollar Highway" and exploring the quaint mountain towns of Silverton and Ouray.....I strolled into Durango, Colorado during peak dinner time on a Friday evening. I had initially been interested in eating at a few restaurants I had researched about, but those places were pretty busy. I was surprised in general how crowded Durango was...I figured it to be a quiet place especially when I visited out of season in early spring. Also, parking was difficult to find on the streets of town. But already being around 8pm, at this point I was happy settling for anything, especially after all the driving, touring and walking around I had done during the day. Right near the heart of the downtown area of Durango, I found Zia Taqueria. What was good about this place for me is that they have their own parking lot and when I walked in, I headed straight to the counter, didn't wait around, ordered and had my food prepared and served to me within a few minutes. That pretty much sums up Zia Taqueria. Actually...it's very similar to the whole Chipotle Mexican Grill concept. Their menu is situated above the counter on a couple of billboards. Just like Chipotle when you order, they prepare your meal right in front of you and then it gets passed down the line. When completed, you pay for it at the register and then choose your own table. They offer unlimited fountain soda as well. I went with my go-to favorite Mexican dish...a chicken quesadilla. Since I was hungrier than usual, I also added chips n salsa as a side. Everything was fine. My quesadilla and the chips n salsa were enough to satisfy me. Overall, the food didn't blow me away amazing...but it was satisfactory for finding a quick meal on the fly. Visiting Durango for one weekend evening...I didn't realize how busy restaurants would be during dinner hours. Coming across Zia Taqueria last minute was a lucky find for me and I'm glad I received made to order food without any hassles. So if you're looking for an upscale version of fast food while avoiding the dinner crowds in Durango, Mexican restaurant Zia Taqueria can be for you. read more

I must be the outlier for this Chipotle wanna be as I see several people seemed to like it. I had a burrito and a small taco. Like Chipotle, you go down the line telling the servers what to put in your taco or burrito. My taco was with carne asada, which tasted like rubber. My burrito was pork. The burrito wasn't bad, but very bland I thought. My wife liked the refried beans in her burrito, but again, I thought they had very little flavor. All in all I felt the ingredients were not near as good as a standard Chipotle. read more

Zia is a must when visiting Durango! I always look forward to eating here during ski season. The Baja Style fish tacos are my go to order. 2 tacos usually aren't enough to fill me up, so I get 4. The newer north location is cool and the upstairs has a good vibe to it. Sadly I feel compelled to writer this review. As a local institution that has its roots in providing quality food with great service, you , Zia, have failed to live up to your roots. I have ignored the lack of quality, poor customer service, and pathetic servings for too long. Today is the last day I will spend any money with you. The fifteen black beans and tablespoon of rice with my wife's potato bowl simply put me over the edge. I ended having to pay extra to get a "normal" size serving. When I brought this to your employee's attention he cavalierly said, we charge extra. Please go back to your roots. It is a travesty when my kids are excited to visit a town that has a Qdoba. Please change my mind and I will gladly revisit this review. read more

The restaurant was unique and inviting, very colorful and spacious. The menu has many options for you to create your own masterpiece. Mine was a carne asada burrito with rice, beans, cheese and the delightful spicy green salsa. Pretty cool that you can get a local beer to wash down your meal with also. Went for the first time and as suggested got the fish tacos! They were great and may have been the best I've ever had just because they were flavorful and packed full of fish and toppings. Service was a tad slow, but I know they were made fresh to order. I actually like the fried (Baja) better than the grilled fish which was a little "fishy" tasting. Still good though. I feel I'm being generous with the three stars. The cleanliness of the food bar was the first thing I noticed. The staff used the same gloves for meat and veggies and all toppings and didn't change gloves between orders at all. I had half a mind to ask them to remake my order when I watched how it was made. Staff seemed unenthused to help us. My son enjoyed his burrito, that's the only reason I give three stars over 2. My food was cold all the way through, and when I asked for guacamole, I didn't mean to have my entire taco drowning in it. Sometimes having more is good... this was by no means a good thing. By the time I sat down I couldn't even eat these "tacos" because all the juice had caused the corn tortillas to fall apart. Even with some salsa it was simply not good. Won't eat here again.
