Awesome Smoked Chicken Tacos! My son and I stayed in Durango, CO on our trip from Monterey CA to San Antonio, TX. Durango is a very cool spot. Balcony Bar & grill was a perfect spot to kick back and enjoy a couple beers, and a couple amazing Smoked Chicken Tacos while we chatted about our trip! My wife and I were visiting our son and his fiancée and came here for lunch on a Friday. It is located on the main downtown street and, you guessed it, is an upstairs establishment. It was a hot day, even at a table under an umbrella. It was busy. The young female server was very nice and attentive. The women had frozen margaritas and the men had IPAS. The beer was good but the women both said they did not really notice any tequila in them. A burger, two shrimp dishes, and a chicken sandwich(me) were ordered. The food took unusually long to come out. My wife did not think that she received enough shrimp but enjoyed them. I liked my sandwich and the fries were nicely seasoned and crispy. Though the table area and bar is not that large, they have a stage for live music. I recommend Balcony Bar and Grill. read more

Just arrived in Durango, Colorado? Make this rooftop bar your first stop for a cold beer and great food! Hubby and I had a green chili burger the first time and the second time, an awesome turkey club and turkey melt. Both were beyond excellent! Better yet- side salad was green, fresh, and topped with artichoke hearts! Dressing was jalapeño vinaigrette delicious on the salad AND on the club sandwich! I have to call this place out for seriously being the best Buffalo Chicken Taco's and onion rings in my LIFE. If I had to pick the top 5 meals in my life, this is in that top 5 and I can't think of the other 4, ain't no lie. I left slappin my belly! Overlooking the busy street below, we were seated on the rail above watching the weekend crowd looking for a great place to eat. Little did they know it was just one flight up! We were served quickly and the food arrived lightning fast! The sandwich had thin sliced bread, with thick cut turkey and chillies with just enough "punch" to fill my hot cravings. The sweet potato fries arrived fresh & hot !! Can you say Happy Tom?? The only negative was the Wasp nest and the absolutely filthy shared bathrooms. Staff was great too. It's where all the noise is! We were walking around Durango and heard a band playing. After three nights of this we finally figured out it was this place. So we checked it out. It's open seating so you have to find your own space. It's like one big deck with a stage in the corner. Perfect for summer time. The servers are quick to come to you though and the food and drinks come out fast. The beer was okay but the food is really good! It's typical bar food but the ingredients are high quality. In pretentious, but Great place! Many other restaurants were closed on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch but we came upon this by chance. I had some fantastic buffalo wings that were smoked then dipped in buffalo sauce! They were great. my wife had a salad with a cilantro jalapeño dressing that was fantastic. My son had chicken strips and enjoyed them. Our bartender/waitress... Joni? Jonna? I wish I had gotten her name.. She was great and on point. Very Friendly to some "out of towners". This was my first visit to Balcony Bar and Grill. We arrived at 7pm. The rooftop was not too overcrowded for a Thursday evening. What seemed like to local bar goers joked that we could seat ourselves when there was plenty of obvious signs to wait to be seated. Our server was very prompt with getting us our Balcony peach tea, which was way too strong for us( once the way to generous amount of ice melted it helped of course.) Water was self serve in an orange Gatorade cooler. We put in our order for fried pickles and luckily placed our meal orders at the same time. The whole vibe of the place was what you would expect out of a typical alley bar. Menus looked as if they had just been taken out of the trash. They were sticky and full of stains, just like our table. Unfortunately we didn't get our food very prompt either. Took at least 45 min for a basket of fried pickles( the only positive here, they tasted amazing) and an hour for our two meals. A basic BBQ burger, and a Buffalo chx taco and a BBQ taco. Burger bun tasted stale and was not toasted. Taco shells were hard and very chewy. Would give this place 1/5 if not for the pickles. It is getting carried for the sheer fact of being a rooftop bar in downtown Durango. Save your money, prices are a bit out there. read more

Waited 15 minutes for someone to take our order--but it took my husband to practically trip the server to get her attention--otherwise I fear we'd still be waiting... I ordered a small Caesar and a TOP SHELF Margarita. Caesar: the worst I've ever eaten--drenched in grated cheese. Dressing was flavorless! But it matched the margarita! First, she brought a "house"--not the top shelf I ordered. And, like the Caesar --tasteless and was almost completely water! She got the order wrong and it was AWFUL! Oh yeah, I got my Caesar served with a plastic fork--and not the strong kind of plastic either! read more

Location, scenery, and food quality usually can overcome so-so waitstaff and customer service, but above average bar food and seat yourself service isn't enough to compensate for waving down overworked and unhappy wait staff. Nonetheless, this open air place is small but is in a great location overlooking downtown. Laid back atmosphere with a dive bar feel. Don't know what kind of place runs out of fries, but the Buffalo chicken and chicken tacos were excellent. Grilled cheese for kids is a large portion and super tasty. Homemade chips are good too. Decent selection of beers but don't expect much help from the underage waitress on recommendations (for obvious reasons). read more

Came in during Snowdown to try some appetizers and possibly food. We asked the waitress what she recommended and started off with the Spinach Artichoke dip based off her recommendation. We were going to try it, and then go from there with our order. ABSOLUTELY the worst spinach artichoke dip i have ever had! It was DISGUSTING! The little bit of shredded cheese on top had been melted, yet the dip itself was super cold! To make matters worse it tasted like i was dipping chips into a jar of salt! We decided to finish our beers, and go elsewhere. The atmosphere here was awesome and the rooftop is great, but when the recommended item is that horrendous it was a clear sign for us to go eat somewhere else! Bar tendered approached us and said that they don't allow dogs there. Knowing ADA policy, I stated that she was a service dog. He glanced at her and said ok. Stopped here for a quick lunch with my partner and we're extremely disappointed. When we arrived we were notified that the kitchen was closed for a couple minutes as the chef was just coming back from the airport. Not a big deal at all, figured the food would be fresh when he got there anyways. We ordered the balcony chicken sandwich which sounded delicious on the menu, but was extremely soggy and bland as it arrived. The chicken was rubbery and clearly hadn't been seasoned at all. Came with a side of avocados that were more brown than green. Ordered with a side of fries that were clearly store bought, frozen, and they couldn't have even bothered to salt them. Extremely disappointed that we spent upwards of $50 for lunch for two people and it tasted disgusting. I know the ambiance of the balcony looks tempting but please don't waste your money here and go elsewhere. read more
