If you are craving pasta in Durango, this is definitely the spot to check out. I stopped in on a Tuesday night to load up on carbs before a big hike the next day. The wait for a table was a bit longer than I expected, but once I sat down, the food more than made up for it. I started with the Baked Meatball Grinder as an appetizer. The meatball itself was tender and flavorful, but the baguette was on the tougher side, which made it a little hard to bite into. Still, the taste of the meatball carried the dish. For my main course, I ordered the Bolognese with Salmon as my protein, and this ended up being the highlight of the meal. The pasta was cooked just right, the salmon was perfectly prepared, and the wagyu beef sauce tied everything together beautifully. Honestly, if I was not so full, I could have easily gone for another plate. Overall, this place is a good choice in Durango if you are in the mood for hearty Italian comfort food. The pasta at this restaurant is top-notch. Everything is made from scratch and to be honest is among the best pasta I've ever eaten. I had one off the main menu. I had a cream cheese sauce and mushrooms, and it was so incredible. While you order at the counter service is still good. They bring you your food. Pasta was extremely dry. I got the bolognese and there was barely any sauce and the little there was dried up the pasta. Would've given it less stars, but the pasta itself was made very well. Just a bummer to see at dry pasta with barely any meat. Wanted to use my bread to soak up the sauce but there wasn't even enough to keep the pasta wet. Ordering experience was odd, having to walk up to the counter. Pretty pointless. Bread was good. Wine was awful. Definitely would not return. Salad was way overpriced. read more

We were extremely disappointed in our experience at Primi given the 4 star yelp rating. The food took an extraordinarily long time to come out- 45+ minutes. The bolognese had limited sauce. The mushroom pasta was just bad- it had no taste. The salmon on top was extra fishy. The ambiance was nice perhaps for cocktails but beware of the food experience. read more

We loved everything about Primi except the dark haired guy taking orders up front. He was so rude and stand off ish, we deducted a star. He acted like we were a bother. We asked if we could sub out ingredients on the side to which he replied no. He was unfriendly, didn't offer suggestions despite it being our first time asking us to stand aside if we Didn't know what we wanted. Sheesh! He could've offered help. We headed to Durango for our honeymoon, without realizing that reservations are SO important on weekends, and this tiny place caught our eye when all of the other restaurants were packed to the gills. We headed in to the counter-style service and put in our orders, along with a bottle of Barbera D'Asti to split as we enjoyed the sunshine during happy hour. The dishes came out pretty quickly and smelled delicious! I got the pesto pasta dish (it's no longer on their online menu since they switched to an Autumn menu) with thin slices of pancetta, and my husband got the Bolognese with local ground beef, and a red wine and cream sauce. Each dish came with a pillowy piece of focaccia bread that was garlicky and heavenly. I am not exaggerating when I tell you that this was one of the best Italian meals I've ever had in my entire life, hence only one picture since I didn't have the patience to wait to dig in. The homemade pasta was perfectly al dente, the sauce coated the noodles without drowning them, the bread was like eating a delicious cloud and the wine was an absolutely perfect pairing. The staff came around to refill our waters and see how we were enjoying the dishes, and were very helpful with recommendations while we ordered, suggesting different styles of noodles and describing the differences and most popular combinations. They have the noodles sitting in the glass case so you can see what the styles are before you make your selection. We had an amazing time and were shocked that this place wasn't overflowing with customers, seeing how delicious the food was. Today I went to eat at Primi for lunch, intending to sit outside with my dog. Unfortunately one must go inside to order. While waiting for the people ahead of me to complete their order I was informed that only service dogs could be inside. I asked what they would have me do? Their answer was to leave the dog outside and come inside without the dog to place my order. As I was by myself this was not practical. Consequently I was unable to place my order so I took my business elsewhere. Ironically, Durango is a very dog friendly town. We went to 11th street station where my dog was given treats and we were both made to feel welcome. Primi's food is good but the environment was unwelcoming and I shall not go back anytime soon. read more

Besides being super friendly, this place has amazing food. I had the Caco de Pepe, and (I can't remember the name of the salad!) we shared an arugula salad. The restaurant is "bistro style" meaning that after you are seated, and have reviewed the menu, you order at the counter. If you have any questions about the menu, the person at the counter is very knowledgeable and helpful. After ordering, you return to your seat and the service begins. Does this place make good pasta? 150% resounding yes!!! Better than I have had anywhere, including of course Italy. Additionally the best salmon in the entire universe. Not kidding. Also the best Negronis ever. Staff are friendly and lovely. We are so lucky to have this absolute gem in our little mountain town, so far away from its roots. After our long drive to Durango, we thought dinner out would be nice. Unfortunately, dinner at Primi was more work than we bargained for. We called ahead and were told that they didn't take same day reservations, but that they had plenty of open tables. By the time we got there, there was no where to sit. Popular is good, so we decided to wait at the bar. We asked a couple of questions to the bartender, who was only mildly annoyed that we asked. All the wines are Italian, which goes with the theme, but most had too much acid for us. We settled on the house white. So, to our main complaint. And I get it! After COVID, it is hard to get staff, but I'm not sure this set up is new with COVID. You have to order your food at the counter. They give you a paper menu on a clipboard, but you are on your own to figure it all out. The meals are all pasta dishes, with the exception of a meatball grinder sandwich on the antipasta part of the menu. Our boys enjoyed the big messy grinders. We settled on a couple of pasta dinners. The noodles appeared to be handmade. They were tender with nice flavor. The sauces were flavorful and not over done, but for us we would not call them exceptional. We added salt. Overall, Primi was good if you want something super casual, but if you are looking for upscale Italian, this is not it. Happy Eating! read more

I really like this place in downtown Durango. In-door and out-door seating to this home style Italian eatery. Food is good and staff is nice and helpful. You order your meal at the counter and they give you a number so staff can bring food and drink to your table. My only complaint is if you didn't order dessert no one wants to get back in line again after you have finished the meal. Which is a real shame because the desserts are really good. Here in Durango, looking for a pasta dinner for the kiddos. Ordered kids marinara and noodles with garlic toast. Kids thought the sauce was too spicy. I was looking forward to Melanzana with eggplant and sausage. It was tasty, but really, really skimpy on the ingredients. The eggplant was scarce and there were only few paper thin slices of Italian sausage. I mean like only 6 minute slices that probably equated to a 1/2 inch chunk of a sausage link. Another entree was the fettuccine Alfredo Tartufo with mushrooms and it was a huge disappointment. The fettuccine was all dried out, like it had been sitting out for hours. The sauce was so bland with a few pieces of woody mushrooms. The service was almost nonexistent. The food was dumped in front of us, and server never checked back in. Recommendation is to keep walking past this place and find another place to eat on this restaurant row. read more

After an amazing magazine write up in 2022 Durango Travel magazine we had to check this place out! We walked and were barely greeted but more pointed to some menus to figure out what we wanted to order. We sat down and our waitress with extremely heavy makeup and a huge lack of people skills or was having a bad day told us to come up and order at the counter. We order and the food did come out very quickly which was appreciated. What our waitress lacked in people skills and a smile she made up for in our fast service and operations. The rest of staff seemed friendly and chill, but the main waitress wrecked the Italian warm ambiance for me. The place other than that did have cute cafe vibe. read more

Delicious pasta and a cute cafe! We found the ordering process very strange but were happy with with the food. You have a host seat you at table and then order at a counter. They have an excellent wine selection and we enjoyed a couple glasses of red. The wine came out fast but the food took forever. The pasta was very fresh and I liked the bolognese sauce. I was really excited to eat some pasta after having Mexican and Thai food throughout our road trip. This place looked very promising! The restaurant looked great inside and Dr Fauci would approve the mask-wearing policy here. The staff was friendly and our order was done in no time. However, I was hoping for more pasta options as only one of them had meat and the rest were just variations of pasta and vegetables. However, you can get meatballs and Italian sausage on the side (extra $). They also serve gelato :) The pasta I ordered was great and came with some bread on the side. On a road trip, drove 7 hours from Utah. Was craving pasta, and this place was closest to our hotel. The hostess sat us at a table and we were asked to order at the counter. I placed my order, paid, and was prompted to add a tip. Ummm... I haven't even been in the restaurant for more then 5 min to see how the service is or how the food is, and they're asking me for a tip? I'm not sure how I feel about that. On top of that, every time you want to order another drink or maybe a desert after dinner, you have to walk up and place another order. I just don't think a place like this should expect a 20% tip when the only thing they're doing is taking my order and bringing over our food. Amazing pasta! The texture of the homemade noodles isn't quite what we were used to in Italy but pretty darn close. The pomodoro wasn't what I expected but it was really good. I thought it was going to be more like the Aglio e olio which was delicious. (Thinking it was an olive oil and garlic w tomatoes but it was tomato sauce). The Italian sausage was probably one of the best we've had here in America. Not mealy. The Tartufo was probably the best dish on the table. Good food but weird service: SERVICE: Before I get into how I didn't care for the unusual sort of self-service provided, I must note that every person we interacted with was very nice and professional. I rarely critique food service operations, but I agree with another review: for better quality Italian food, with a large wine selection and desserts, it's odd to order and prepay at a register for your meal, but you're seated by a hostess? Further, several tables were reserved? With no wait staff, why are they holding tables? ??? No one ever waits on you: your food is dropped and that's it. So, if you want a couple glasses of wine, if you decide you are hungry enough for dessert or a specialty coffee, you have to go back in line and get it? It's very odd. I also agree with another review that I didn't like being prompted for a tip in advance with no idea what food and the non-service would be like. In hindsight, I tipped WAY too much. Of note: I'm very aware it has been super challenging for restaurants to staff wait service since Covid, so maybe they had full service before? FOOD: it was very good. Fresh, quality ingredients. We had: Pomodoro: sauce was good. Bit thin, but definitely fresh. I love al dente pasta but this was too undercooked. It took a while to get it so I dealt with it. Fortunately the heat of the sauce helped it become almost normal al dente about halfway through. Ragu di pancia: this pork and rigatoni dish was pretty good. Cooked perfectly, sauce was great and the pork was tender and flavorful. Meatballs: hard no for me. I'm 2nd generation Italian from the Boston area and have never in my life been given meatballs with no sauce. They were hard, had minimal flavor, and a bit tough. I flagged someone who worked there and they were very nice to bring me a small side of sauce. It didn't help though. This was a huge surprise to me. Overall, this food is very good. It's just disappointing because it is a large place with an attractive outdoor space, so it seemed like a great date night kinda vibe. If we return we'd order it to go. read more
