First time in Durango for a wedding and we were able to do a bit of exploring tonight! Found Mamma Silvia's on yelp and decided to try it because of the decent reviews. As soon as we walked in, the hostess greeted us and sat us, no reservation required. The restaurant itself is smaller and has a bar area/counter next to the dinner tables. Our server Maddie was great, had great suggestions, and was attentive. Bread service could've been warm, also never received the butter with it. I don't normally go with the "Chef's Special" because I always feel like it means "the seafood is about to go and we have to sell it" lol I couldnt resist the Frutti di Mare Cannelloni. I paired this with an Old Fashioned and the Brussels Sprouts Pancetta. We also tried the Carbonara. All the dishes were amazing. I was not disappointed with the cannelloni, wonderful seafood taste medley, not "fishy". The Brussel Sprouts were a hit, my partner normally hates Brussel Sprouts but he enjoyed these. The carbonara was perfect! Honestly loved all the dishes tonight. Might come back Sunday to try something else off the menu--pictures of the veal Marsala looked amazing. read more

Our visit started out wonderful. We were seated in the bar and the bartender was awesome! We started with drinks and ordered a Caesar salad. Halfway through our salad they seated a male right next to my husband. The rest of the bar area was open and all the booths along the wall were open as well. The man was filthy dirty and the odor from him filled the room. His hands had blood on them too. He kept mumbling and laughing and when the bartender tried to take his order he was having a difficult time understanding him. My husband got up to go to address the situation and the man proceeded to show me his teeth and growling at me. This behavior completely changed the direction of our evening and hopes for a nice experience for dinner. The restaurant wanted us to make changes rather than the man disrupting the evening. We decided to leave and dine elsewhere. The restaurant made zero efforts to accommodate this unfortunate time for us on our vacation. Empathy for someone is not lost on me, but lack of respect for us was certainly lost on the management here! My wife and I found Mama Silvia's by accident. We didn't have a reservation so we sat at the bar, and we are glad we did. Mike was the bartender and he made excellent cocktails and was a joy to talk to. We both enjoyed our meals and ended up having enough left over to take home. Great portions. The atmosphere was charming and as a young couple sitting close at the bar was a great chance for us to be relaxed in a more classy environment. We will be back. read more

We were in the mood for some pasta and someone had recommended Mama Silvia's. Initially, the restaurant looks small, but as you enter you realize they have an upstairs area. My sister and I decided to share the carbonara, but each order the table-side Caesar salad. Both were great! Our server Savannah was amazing! After riding the Durango Silverton Railway which is a 9 hour train ride. We decided to have dinner before heading back to the hotel room. We found this little Italian restaurant by mistake on our way somewhere else. This turned out to be great decision on our part as everything about our experience was superb. We were greeted with friendly faces and seated rather quickly as they worked us in without a reservation. We both ordered the pistachio crusted chilean sea bass with fried polenta. Let just say the food melted in your mouth. Our waiter Dan was gracious, knowledgeable about everything on the menu and extremely pleasant. I loved the set up of restaurant as well. We sat by the kitchen which was open so you could see the chef's cook and pastry chef prepared the meals. For me that was totally AWESOME. Plus they had a tv that played a show of how each dish was made. Which was even more exciting. I told Mark I just need Gordon Ramsey to pop up and I would die happy. read more

WONERFUL!!! We walked in on a Saturday night without reservation. The staff was very helpful. We sat at the bar as we waited. Our bartender Mike was knowledgeable and helpful with our drink selection. He makes an amazing Old Fashion. We were sat at an intimate table in the corner. Our sever, Kate was also helpful and very nice. I started with the pasta fagioli. It was good but not memorable. I would pass next time. My wife ordered the special, Bronzino ala Picatta and it was AMAZING. Cooked perfectly, tender, flavorful without a pronounced fish flavor. I had the Agnolotti which was also very good. It didn't have a traditional Agnolotti shape but more like a ravioli. That said, the past was homemade and wonderful. The cheese/ Spinach filling was perfect with an amazing sauce. My wife had the eggplant Parmesan, but I think it was called something else on their menu. However, it had the absolute best marinara sauce she has ever had! I had the fettuccine Alfredo with scallops, and again it was absolutely delicious! The food seems very authentic. Prices were reasonable service was quick. If I started this review as frustrating as my dining experience at Mama Silvia's you'd stop reading so I'll start with the good news, the food is good-5 stars good but the ordering process is a mess. If you're dining in you likely won't have any issues so enjoy! If you're trying to order Togo please keep reading. To start, there are two reviews for the same place here on Yelp, Mama Silvia's and Mamm Silvia's, ironically, the one spelt incorrectly has the site information http://www.mammasilvias.com which does have an updated menu but you can not order online from the site or yelp. Ok, inconvenient but not a big deal, I call to order only for the recording to refer me to the online ordering site-seriously. On my second attempt to call I request transfer to Mamma Silvia's and got the automated message that the "voice mailbox has not been set up" proceeded by disconnection. At this point, I'd normally give up but I have a 3 year old that wanted spaghetti and I wanted him to eat so off we go for a face-to-face order. The inside is small with just a few tables (visible from the front) and a bar. There was a single table occupied and I asked the front staff member if I could place an order to go. After some thought, the employee said she had to check with the newly hired kitchen staff so they wouldn't be overwhelmed- it's 5pm on a Wednesday with only one patron but ok, I wait patiently. I mentioned the online ordering wasn't working and learned that was intentional as the staff gets overwhelmed with orders so they turned the online feature off. I then mentioned there was not an answer on the telephone and was told they don't answer the phone until a specified time. I'm a bit annoyed but already there so the kitchen agrees to make my order, I pay, then get directed to walk next door to the sushi place to pick up, yes, the sushi place. Sure, I again oblige. Back to the good news, the food is delicious. We had: Pappardelle alla Bolognese with spicy sausage, Penne alla Rustica (was spicy and so rich in flavors), the Spaghetti con Polpette (Speghetti and meatballs) and Insalata Capricciosa for about $80. We ate everything! My 3yo ate the adult size Speghetti too so all in all this is worth the good eats. 5 stars for the food. Minus a star for not updating the website or phone recording to help patrons looking for Togo orders. read more

We decided to give it a go after reading some mixed reviews. Glad we did! We were seated quickly and waitstaff was courteous and timely. I had a salad with citrus and arugula that had a nice lighter taste with an interesting herb topping that complimented it well. The entree was chicken piccata and I was pleasantly surprised. The chicken was perfectly tender with mushrooms and capers. There was enough for two meals. My husband had the Chicken Marsala and thought it was good. He did think it could have been a bit more tender, but he ate ALL of it. I tried it and thought it was fine. Go figure For dessert we split a nice tiramisu. read more

Needs work. The food is upscale mass Italian. Spaghetti and meatballs. Linguini with random seafood. Eggplant parm. That's all fine with me and I give it two stars. It was OK. I think the main problem is with staffing and management. It's not really OK to sit for fifteen minutes without water, much less a drink order. It's not ok to take an order from one member of a party and then disappear and take the other order ten minutes later. It's not acceptable to serve cold food at $50 a plate. This is bush-leaguer and not worth the money. Do better. Go elsewhere. read more

My husband is currently on assignment as a wildland firefighter in CO. It's worth mentioning because as anyone knows the hours in the summer for firefighters can be long and a chance for a meal during the day are pretty slim when you are away from home. He went to Mama Silvia's the other evening tired and hungry hoping to grab a bite to go after a long shift. Initially he was told sure they could accommodate a to-go meal. However, shortly thereafter someone came from the back and spoke with the woman who had ok'd the to go order. She then proceeded to tell my husband that they were too busy and would not be able to serve him. Whaaaat!? I don't know what the policy is here and frankly I don't care. That's not how you treat people. My husband doesn't have the time to write these reviews while he's on assignment and honestly I would have wrote this off to just a bad experience but he had a very similar experience at another restaurant last night. So I decided to hop on here and just say how disappointed I am with these businesses and the level of service or complete lack of service that he has received in Durango. Shameful read more

Overprice, low quality food preparation, poor service, low staffing. The only saving grace is that they have a nice atmosphere. But unfortunately that doesn't make up for poor service. Skip this place! I keep trying to let his place be good but they refuse to offer anything of quality. Three times I have been here in the past year and I am still met with the same issue, there is NO HOST. I have had to wait to be acknowledged by anyone who works here for an average of 10-15 minutes. That doesn't even include the wait time for the table. The staff just runs around, tending to tables, and ignores anybody standing at the door. It's absurd. Do they want business? It does not seem like it. The food is mediocre at best. It has really declined since they opened. A true disappointment. It's sad the only good Italian food we can get in Durango is pizza. It really is a shame. My theory on why this place has not gone under is because it's owned by East by Southwest next door. There's no incentive for them to make quality food, provide good service, or make money because most of their clientele is foot traffic from that damn train. So I was disappointed in the meal tonight. I got the spaghetti and meat balls and for dessert the creme brulee. Pasta was so over cooked it was mush, couldn't even wrap around the fork without splitting. Sauce was fine, meatballs were good. Unfortunately the mouth feel was completely mushy due to the pasta it ruined the meal. For 20 dollars a plate I expect properly cooked pasta. I've honestly eaten day old pasta from my fridge that was better. The sad creme brulee did not set properly. It was completely runny throughout the bottom half. I'm not shocked that a kitchen that doesn't know how long to boil pasta messed up a creme brulee, as it considerably harder to get right. So why did I order it? Hope, last time I was here, I remembered the experience being great especially the dessert. Unfortunately thier kitchen isn't putting out the quality it used too. My mom was also disappointed, her pasta was the same mushy mess and her eggplant parmesan was tough because the slices were super thick. I think this restaurant has done better and should get back to a higher quality cooking, the devil is in the details. Or drop your prices 7-10 dollars, then I wouldn't expect as much. Considering the limited seating, I was surprised I was told this on the phone but in person, they said they were doing take away. I ordered the veal marsala that was fair but I kid you not, the veal was four bites and no more than two to four ounces. $36 for an appetizer sized portion and I was glad that I ordered two entrees for myself. The bolognese was some of the best I've ever had and although I cannot speak to the chicken dishes, I would NOT order the veal unless you want to stop for a value meal on your way home. I suspect that they remain in business because of the tiny portions and high cost of the food. Don't hesitate to get the bolognese but I'm guessing that regardless of what you order that you'll walk away hungry. I'm a local and like to support the local eateries and pay cash so they can avoid processing fees. I'll stick to making my Italian at home. read more

Restaurant recommendation from the waitress at the hotel bar. Newer Italian place in downtown. Homemade pasta gets my attention quickly, and this place is authentic. No reservations on a Thursday evening, but we were able to get seated right away. Jordan was our server, and she was friendly, enthusiastic and efficient. Ordered lasagna, rich and creamy, savory sausage and a delicious, light and flavorful marinara sauce. My wife got the spaghetti and meatballs, again homemade pasta with plenty of delicious homemade fresh meatballs. Our friend got the chicken marsala and said it was delicious.We ordered an angel hair pasta, and it was also delicious. Homemade bread and roasted garlic served with the meal. We don't eat Italian food very often but decided to splurge and I am so glad we did! This place has excellent food and ambience, great service too. The menu is very diverse and not just noodles. My husband is diabetic so we eat low carb, I'm always delighted when we can get fresh veggies instead of carb heavy noodles. I had the sea bass and it was amazing! Tonight I had the special: pumpkin ravioli with pine nuts and a brown butter sauce. It wasn't good...it was sublime. This was one of those meals where you don't want to be bothered while you're eating it. You just want to be left alone with your pumpkin ravioli and house Chianti. Everyone loved the calamari even if the dish it was served in wasn't ideal for sharing. My daughter liked the spaghetti but surprisingly, my son thought the chicken Alfredo lacked taste. I tried it and agreed but the staff was quick to help with some parmigiana and I was impressed at how responsive all the wait staff was. The food was what you would expect for authentic Italian cuisine with some very interesting flares of flavor. It was absolutely amazing and the best Italian food I have had in a very long time! The server, Tony, was incredible. You could tell that he had a breadth of experience in the industry and provided a level of service that you would expect in a 5 star resort. Very good Italian place. You may get confused by the "Thai iced tea" or "Mochi" on the menu, apparently owned by the same owners of "South by Southwest" next door. Our appetizer was fantastic- can't remember the name but the fresh mozzarella ball with tomatoes and basil was delish! I had the farfalle bologonese- I was disappointed they didn't have meatballs- but their sausage was good as an add-on. My friend had the pesto spaghetti dish- we both polished them off. Kate was a great server and I really enjoyed my meal. I had the Linguine Arrabiata. Plenty of delicious mussels and just the right amount of spiciness. Very fairly priced, fresh bread served as well. I love this place and try to get here when ever I have some extra money AND feel like Italian food... Durango does have an issue with a lack of great Italian places. Don't get me wrong the city has some choices but 'great' is the keyword. Mamma Silvia's doesn't disappoint on too many fronts, but there are a few I will break those down though. I love the lasagna here, the issue I have is that sometimes it has been sold out when we have been here. That is a good thing I suppose. I know the pasta is made fresh which I absolutely love and I tell everyone about. If you like pasta and fresh pasta this is the place. The issues I have are that the place shares space with East by Southwest which is a sushi joint. There is usually a smell of seafood and fish, not my jam but hey if you like sushi and seafood probably not going to bother you at all. I'm not a fan of it but I will put up with it if I get some amazing pasta. The bathrooms are shared between the restaurants so it can be humorous to watch people making wrong turns from the restrooms and getting confused about where they are at. And the place can be a little noisy at times. I happen to have sensitive hearing and love quiet places but this is a personal preference so it isn't really something I ever feel the need to mention or include in my scores. read more
