we have been long time customers and have always enjoyed the atmo and food. tonight was very disappointing. Burgers were overcooked. Buns were hard and dry. Chicken sandwhich was a chicken breast with no garnishes on dry focaccia bread. our go to appetizers (mussels and chicken lollipops) were over cooked as well. Service was well below standards. The food was so expensive for it to be less than mid. Customer service was weird, had four different people serve us, three asked for our order which was already put in with the first person. That was fine I guess, they just seem not to be communicating with each other. The first person (who sat us & took our whole order) was rude asf. Was clearly annoyed with us for nothing, we asked for the check and waved his finger rudely, like dang aren't we the customers and you choose to have this job. We split the El Moro Burger and fries and we asked for the burger to be cooked medium. The burger was a little undercooked. The burger was seasoned nicely. The fries were done well ahead of the burger and they were barely lukewarm. We received excellent service from the two young gals working the tables in the bar area. We walked 4 blocks from our hotel to the restaurant. I didn't see their own parking lot. Note: 1. They automatically add a 20% tip to the bill. We almost always tip 20% for descent service. The servers missed out on a higher tip because I was taken back by their policy. 2. I ordered a Sprite and got a refill. I was not told there is no free refills and I did not see this on the menu. I was charge $8 for two Sprites. This added to me not leaving a larger tip. The servers lose out because of questionable policies. 3. I evaluated the food, service and atmosphere on their own merits and these issues did not impact the rating I gave. read more

Overall a nice place. The burger isn't worth the money. It came out well done and was dry. The ore-formed patty did not have a lot of flavor. Waitress and bartenders were great. Might go again but if you want a burger it is tough to beat Famburger no matter where you go in town. read more

My husband had a salmon with lentils dish that he said was one of the best restaurant meals he has had ever. I had pea risotto with oyster mushrooms and mint- it also comes with pancetta but I am vegetarian. It was amazing. So was the kale salad. $$-$$$ This is establishment is found right and downtown Durango, Colorado. We were simply walking down the street when we noticed this pub and thought it would be a great place to have dinner. We were not disappointed, and the food was absolutely delicious. There's indoor and outdoor seating, the ceilings are extremely high, and it is very open air inside with curtains to separate side tables for some privacy. I enjoyed the burger, which was delicious... And as usual, I was unable to eat the whole thing so had an additional meal for the next night. DELICIOUS!!! I have lived in Durango for 25 years and been to El Moro at least 20 times. They recently hired a new chef and he knows what he's doing. Our food was literally perfect. I ordered eggs Benedict. The hollandaise was honestly the best I've had in a long time. The potatoes were baked then smashed and fried. Delicious and crispy!! I can't say enough great things as I'm so so pleased with the incredible experience! Have to add the icing on the cake is our server/bartender. His name is Happy and he sure is! El Moro Tavern is one of the many upscale restaurants in downtown Durango, so is it worth the cost. The charcuterie is a great starter with an excellent selection of meats and cheeses. The breads, mustard, and jam are all great. The seared sea scallops were pretty good. There was a nice sear on them but they could have used a bit more salt. The orzo was fantastic and had a nice creamy sauce. The mushroom tempura was also a fantastic addition to the meal. We also got the lemon garlic orzo which was extremely disappointing. There was no lemon or garlic flavor at all in the orzo. And the orzo wasn't salted enough so all other flavors were muted. You could taste a little bit of some of the vegetable flavors on there but they weren't noticeable because of how unsalted the whole dish was. For dessert we got the chocolate orange cake. The cake was dense, crumbly, and bland. Barely any chocolate flavor in the cake. The frosting at least had flavor but was extremely thick and hard making it hard to get an even concoction with the cake. The orange topping on the cake did add a lot of needed flavor. While some of the items were great, there were too many major disappointments for a place at this price range. read more

Amazing cocktails! Wow, I was overwhelmed by the cocktail options here, and apparently they change their specialty cocktail menu often. I'm totally blanking on the name of the cocktail I got, but it was one of their specialty cocktails and it a holiday themed cocktail and it was delicious. We split the burrata and the KFC (Korean fried cauliflower). The burrata was delicious and topped with pesto, balsamic, and tomatoes. It came with bread and they also brought gluten free bread for my friend who is gluten intolerant. My friend could also eat their KFC, which was tempura battered cauliflower, spicy ssamjang glaze, pickled carrot slaw, red chile flakes, and sesame seeds. It was delicious, but was a little tiny bit salty for our taste after eating more than one. It also had a hint of spice. Oh my lordy was the food delicious! We were seated right away, our waiter was attentive and so nice. The atmosphere is welcoming, clean and the bar sparkled. For a bar it smells very clean, no beer after smells at all. For dinner I started out with the beet salad. At first the curry vinaigrette was off putting but once I blended the salad it was so flavorful, the vinaigrette is a creamy egg based dressing but I ended up really liking it and it turned out to be one of the best starter salads I've ever had! For my dinner I got the seared scallops. It came on a bed of loaded rice, tempura mushrooms with a cream based soup surrounding everything. I took a picture because I'm not doing it justice here. I'd definitely get this again. Well done to the chef!! Also, my son never finishes any burgers he gets but tonight he cleaned his plate. His burger was delicious. For dessert we got the orange chocolate cake. Its flavor is reminiscent of that round chocolate orange you smash on the table and the cake is very moist. Delicious! I came here for a late dinner Saturday night and had a reservation at 9:15pm. I did not know that they would only serve the late night menu or I wouldn't have come here then. I ordered the Honey-Sambal Lollipops and the Beet & Apple Salad. The salad was ok. The chicken lollipops were crazy spicy and nowhere on the menu did it say it would be covered in pepper, which it was. I was coughing the whole time eating this. I did mention it was spicy to a bartender but he didn't offer to exchange it, only that it was not spicy when he had it last. I had the California Waltz cocktail and it was really bad, both my friend and I thought so. He loved the Matcha Ma Call It and was talking about it even the next day. Took my order, all good. Beet & Apple salad ($9) was tasty. Greens and all accompaniments fresh. Lemon Orzo ($20) was the main course. Preparation well executed, orzo & vegetables fresh and went well together. A shade on the pricey side, $34 out the door incl 20% gratuity (no beverage, just water). My family ate here last night, it had been a couple of years since we were here. Last night's experience can be categorized as good not great. A little detail, the drinks for $12 were really quite good. The manhattan tasted more like an old fashioned but for $12 who cares, the food was 3*. The curried mussels were pretty good but very peppery not enough bread for the dish and three additional rounds were an extra $4 ??, My wife and son both had the risotto, one was ordered with shrimp one without, the shrimp was needed for an additional flavor profile, as it was very plain as it was. I Had the steak and frites, it was cooked as ordered but a little tough for $44, the french fries though were very good. So we had three drinks two glasses of wine, and the above food and the price was $222 including a 3% additional surcharge which is never a good business practice. The prices were on par with the quality of the experience. Overall solid 3*. read more

We sat in the corner of the popular El Moro bar. The place was packed and we got REALLY lucky to have the only two open chairs at the near corner of the bar with the windows at our back. I overheard some conversation next to me about restaurant kitchen equipment. A couple of people were engaging this guy next to us as they came in the door. They obviously knew this guy. At that point I introduced myself, explaining that I was a culinary graduate and columnist. We exchanged business cards. As I was chatting it up with my wife and the guy next to me, our bartender would occasionally chime in 'cause he knew the guy as well. Ed was the Head Chef at a neighboring establishment (Steamworks), and was having a burger saying it was one of the best around. Then our bartender surprised me saying kind things about Ed's restaurant and something about an "Airline Breast". Rarely do I hear or read about an airline breast on a menu. "That's something that has almost completely died in California", I said. With all of the craft brewery and dog friendly patios, finer culinary techniques have mostly disappeared. So now our bartender is talking culinary. We ordered the delicious Korean Fried Cauliflower as an appetizer before our dinner reservations next door (see Eolus). The cauliflower also caught the attention of Ed as he said it was also very good here, but said he knew his own secret way of making that plate. Imma gonna look him up for that. Came here to celebrate a special occasion. Had high hopes based on the quality of so many 5 star reviews. Here's what's good... the ambiance and the friendliness of the staff. Great location and vibe. Huge wine, whiskey and cocktail list. Tons of handcrafted options for whatever you enjoy. Really enjoyed the Greek Salad and the Shrimp and Grits. A couple things that weren't ideal... The Korean Friend Cauliflower was quite salty and was very siracha-dominant. It was indistinguishable from buffalo cauliflower. I wouldn't recommend it if you were looking for a unique flavor. The Crying Tiger Beef.. half the plate was the pepper slaw, the steak was piled to the side, and the rest of the plate was bare. They were out of cornbread (which they graciously discounted the meal to accommodate). However, I just did not find this to be a tasty dish. The crispy hot steak with too much cold slaw. The presentation and flavors just weren't there. They have a cool option to "Buy a Round" for the kitchen for $5--something we did first because we think that's fun and important. I have eaten at el Moro many times over the ~10 years I've lived in Durango. Overall it's a solid choice. However, over the last 6 months or so they have listed a great beer, a Chimay Premiere on their menu for $21. I have had Chimays from coast to coast and have never heard of such an outrageous price for a single beer. Not in NYC not in LA. This is an insult to our intelligence. I understand margins are tough in the restaurant business but wouldn't it just be better to not serve something rather than so blatantly price gouge? read more

Fabulous. We went for appetizers the first night. Not disappointed. We had the beets with cheese and capers. The grapefruit didn't add to the dish, but still good. Then was the bone marrow. Delicious. Finally was the Korean BBQ lollipops. They were delicious. Served with a creme fraiche sauce. So good we went back the next night for them. The second time we included the lollipops and patates. The patates were delicious but it was like eating 3 potatoes. The first server was non existent but then was a shift change and Greg did well. I loved the ambience of this restaurant. It was cozy with brick walls and mason jar chandeliers, but still felt like a nice restaurant. We came around 8:00 pm, and were seated right away. Our server was prompt and checked on us several times throughout the meal. I got the lamb burger which had pickled beats and get cheese. It tasted reminiscent of a gyro. I really enjoyed it and would order it again. I also really liked the fries. Thin and very crispy. I recommend asking for a side of chipotle aoili to dip the fries in. My husband got the el Moro burger which he enjoyed. The only issue is that it was supposed to come with bacon on it, but they must have forgot, and when my husband noticed, he didn't want to make a fuss. To drink, I had the elderberry hard cider. It was not too sweet or dry and had a nice floral taste. I knocked off a star mainly because of the price. $18 for a burger is a little steep in my opinion.
