I felt extremely unsafe at this bar. Just after midnight, I was helping a friend who had too much to drink and brought her to the bathroom so she could calm down. A group of women were screaming, and I politely asked them to lower their voices. One woman became aggressive. Shortly after, a woman who claimed to be the owner entered, put her hands on me, and immediately kicked us out without asking what happened or attempting to de-escalate. A male security guard physically grabbed us and forced us out the back door into the cold rain, even though we were not resisting and our jackets and belongings were still inside. Later, while I was calmly seated with my group, that same guard grabbed me again and told me to leave, saying "you smell like shit." For context, I am brown, my friend is Black, and the staff involved were white. I can't say whether that played a role, but the treatment felt targeted and inappropriate. Because of the physical handling and unsafe treatment of patrons, I have filed a complaint with the New York State Liquor Authority. I would not recommend this place. read more

I was really worried because I saw there was a dress code for this place, but I think the dress code is for after hours when everyone is clubbing. Not for the actual restaurant during the day time. This place is massive! It's very fancy and a really cool place with an old timey feel to it. The appetizers were half off, so I got that and the appetizers are practically a meal on it's own! It was great! (Usually go for $10, but were $5 so I got the chicken tenders) If you're meeting up with someone, looks can be deceiving as their booths don't show people sitting there, it just looks like a wall. So if they say they're inside, just look to the right and see if they're already in the booth. read more

I can't believe we never knew this place existed! The hostess was super sweet, Ivan, our waiter helped with suggestions. The James Joyce burger was fabulous, cooked to perfection at medium rare. The fries will go on the list of one of my favorites. We had the pleasure of being entertained by @lydiavonhuf while we ate. After a screening at the nearby Plaza Cinema, we walked over here for a bite to eat. Being a Monday evening after dinner time and with other events in town, there were scattered patrons at the booths, table, and bar. Our server Ryan was very attentive without being overbearing. My husband and I had shepherd's pie and honestly I thought other than my Brit Mum-in-law's, was the best I had had. The choice of beef was tasty and higher quality than what most pubs serve. I only got drinks, the bartender charged me for an extra drink and added 20% gratuity because I was with a party of eight - at the bar. I made a reservation via google. I never made a reservation via google before but it was an easy process and the restaurant confirmed my reservation within a few minutes. Highly recommend making a reservation to ensure you get the time you want and eliminate any waiting times. Great place to go with others and have a conversation. It's not loud. James Joyce has a great atmosphere! The decor and layout is very pretty. It's very open. They had live music playing for a little more than half the time I was there. He was playing 90s music and he was very good. However, the service wasn't great for a Saturday evening at 6:30. I wish I got his name but he wasn't so friendly and didn't come over to see if we wanted another glass of wine/beer with our dinner since we drank our glasses with our appetizer, didn't check to see how our food was and took forever to get the check to us even though we said we have to go we have to make a show at the Patchogue theater. I am very disappointed at this restaurant they offer an impossible, vegan burger, and guess what it is cooked on the same grill as all the other meats that they have I was bit by the Lonestar tick and I cannot have any meat because I get sick so I saw that they had an impossible vegan burger, and I asked the waiter if it was totally vegan, and was told yes well after being sick for two days, I decided to call James Joyce and the manager was unavailable to speak with me, but I spoke with someone else that answered the phone, and he told me that the impossible vegan burger is cooked on the same flat top grill as all the other meats so this is not a totally vegan burger I am now waiting for the manager to call me back so I will update this review when and if I hear back from her I am very disappointed. I had a lot of people that day and the bill was over $300 and I spent two days sick after that so I said, I would update and I am The manager did call me and told me I should have told the waiter that I had a food allergy and needed my meat cooked separately and I told her that it says impossible, vegan anything vegan would not be cooked with other meat products, because then that no longer makes it vegan so she apologized and said the next time I come in, I should let them know that I have a meat allergy so my vegan meat can be cooked elsewhere, and there would be no cross-contamination no, I will not be eating anything at all there but I must say, the drinks were good lol read more

We were going to the Patchogue Theater to see a show on a Sunday afternoon. The reviews for James Joyce were decent, so we'ed thought to try it. Dark walls, big bar, nice Halloween decorations, booths, tables, big TVs showing the sports. A bit loud. Not many people yet on a Sunday afternoon, so we got seated right away. I took off one star because we were seated in a booth about the middle of the restaurant and I could smell the bathrooms that were located at the end - cleaner? clorox? The waiter helped us out right away. I choose the blackened chicken wrap. Good! - blacked chicken, roasted peppers, tomatoes, spinach, bacon. The fries were your typical frozen, and put in a fryer. Cute - they put them in a little basket. Free refills on the lemonade, a bit on the sweet side. The french onion soup was good. I will try it again and get the angus burger. I saw a party get one of those hugh pretzels! Looked good! The prices not bad - 2 people, one appetizer, 2 drinks, 2 wraps. about $55. (With tip) I asked about the dress code that someone posted on Yelp. The waiter laughed - he said that it's focused to the young people. (No ripped jeans, baseball caps, baggy pants....) We had a wonderful time here at this brand new high end pub in Patchogue. This place is beautifully designed, you can tell there was a lot of thought put into it. My favorite part was the set up of the live music above the bar which was really cool! Not too loud where you can't have a conversation, but also loud enough to enjoy yourself! Bartenders were attentive and helpful. A large whiskey and bourbon selection. They are brand new and the kitchen was heavily backed up so there was a long wait to eat, good thing we were mostly on a liquid diet last night. Our bartender did us a solid and slipped in an order of broccoli poppers for us which was delicious! I'm so happy there is a place like this in Patchogue! We went to a James Joyce pub in Ybor city in Florida and loved it so much we wished we had a place like it on Long Island, and now we do! The decor is beautiful and inviting and just makes you feel so at home and happy the moment you walk in. The service is amazing and the wall of Jameson is just so awesome that we had to have the Irish mule drinks to start....also AMAZING! The bartenders really know their stuff and even though it was crowded they were able to serve everyone in a short period of time and made sure everyone got the attention they needed. As for the food it was exceptional! We all had different dishes so we could try each others meals. I had the chicken with mushrooms in the most delicious cream sauce I ever tasted. My husband had the shepherds pie which was also the best. Our server was extremely friendly and attentive and her dinner suggestions were right on! Everything looks so great on the menu that we did need help deciding. The one thing to know about going here is that is does get crowded and loud but that is really any place you go in Patchogue on a weekend. Also, on the weekends they don't take reservations so get there early. We got there at 6:00pm and only had to wait 10 minutes for a perfect booth! The food was a joke, there were four of us, two ordered their French onion soup. This concoction was melted cheese on top of a crock of brown liquid, that was horrible. I thought since this was my first time there, I would enjoy their chicken pot pie entry. Pot Pie??? I was served a bowel of potato soup with a piece of brown bread floating in the middle of this ????????????? The drinks were good, as how can a glass of wine be altered. The ambience is amazing, and the service was good, but the food was a joke. Please do not be fooled by a nicely decorated restaurant, please try a place like Varneys of Bellport. A group of us went there after a wedding. They had a section of the restaurant closed off for our group. We got there at 6 and there were appetizers on all the high top tables and they kept refreshing them throughout the 3 hours of our party. The bartenders were very attentive and we never had to wait for a refill. We had wings potato skins mozzarella sticks and the huge pretzels. All were great. Our party ended by 9 but a bunch of us started tabs and stayed till 11. At around 930-10 the DJ started spinning tunes and the younger crowd took over. The two times I was here I left very disappointed. The food is below average and I expected a lot more from such a popular area. Other restaurants nearby blow this place out of the water. I came here my 2nd time and I was with 10 people or so, and it was a Friday night around 8:30pm. I was told half of us aren't allowed in because of our shoes and clothing. The dress code was beyond ridiculous. The bouncers were insanely rude and to lose hundreds of dollars of business over the type of shoes my party is wearing is quite laughable. We have been coming here for quite a number of years and the service and the food have always been excellent. Last night we went, and sad to say, service was not good and my shepherds pie, that I always get here, was very disappointing. Too many potatoes and the meat and veggie mix was bland. The build your burger my wife had was good except the middle part of it came out rare/medium rare when it was asked for well done. Not sure how that happens. We will probably try again one more time hoping this was a one off. read more
