Having traveled from Pennsylvania based on positive experiences Ive been here few times before, I expected a much better experience. The service felt off from the start due to I was speaking Thai and waiter/waitress likely judged that I do not speak English. My husband heard the whole conversation and it bothered him at the moment led him to feel unwelcome, but I told my husband that I don't care what they think so we can enjoy our meal. The overall atmosphere was rather strange for an all-you-can-eat buffet. The total bill for two adults came to ~$74 We ordered two sets of pendant bread () for takeout, and we left a $10 cash tip on the table. Almost immediately after placing the cash down, the waitress approached and asked if it was a TIP making a VISIBLY DISPLEASED expression before walking away. As we were leaving, I was confronted by the owner or head manager (me and him spoke Thai) inquired what was wrong with the service. He stated that the waitress had complained about the TIP amount less than 10%. We explained that we had not included the approximately $30 takeout order in our tip calculation, especially considering it was a buffet restaurant. A quick calculation would have shown that the $10 TIP represented roughly 15% on the dining portion alone, and the waitress's primary contribution during our visit was simply providing water and choice of 'appetizers'. I gave them 5 stars on google and yelp 6 years ago (going to delete it) I have always recommended this place to my boss and colleagues from NY, NJ to PA But I will have to retract my recommendation to them after this. I REPEAT 'DO NOT COME HERE' We will NOT be returning. While the food itself was decent but the UNGRATEFUL ATTITUDE and handling of the situation completely ruined what had otherwise been a pleasant meal. I REPEAT DO NOT COME HERE! Very cute interior and the staff was friendly and helpful. You order your broths and meats on a little paper menu. They do not offer the typical Sichuan style broth, but various Thai options that were unfamiliar to me so I picked one kind of randomly. The waitress took my menu and then came back and said "Are you sure you want this one? This other one I would recommend instead, it's our most popular one" I told her sure, I would go with the one she recommended and she said "It's made with blood is that ok?" I said yea but as she was walking away I was thinking to myself "Hmm actually I'm not sure if that is ok." I'm glad I took the chance to try something new and unfamiliar because the bloody broth did add a very unique and interesting flavor to the hot pot. The beef I got was high quality and tender and the complimentary mango salad was delicious. They have a decent selection of vegetables and fishballs and such offered self serve in a buffet. There's no sauce station like a standard hot pot place, but instead you are presented with 3 sauces which range in spiciness. While I generally find that when a Thai person tells me something is spicy that means it will be way too spicy for me, even the hottest of the three sauces I found to be very eatable and pleasantly hot. (If you're looking for insanely spicy food I would recommend Playground downstairs) They all have distinct flavors, and are each well balanced with sweetness and heat. The service is awkward The atmosphere is weird it's a buffet all you can eat me and my wife were $78 in total we decided to order some dessert, pendant bread for takeout we left $10 on the table and the waitress was like a hawk. She was already there as soon as the cash she was on the table she said is this a tip and made a face walking away then moments later we're getting confronted by the owner or head Manager on the way out stopping us and asking what was wrong with the service and that she complained to him why is the tip so little my wife and I had to explain to him that we're not counting takeout which is like $30 and again it's a buffet. I remember a time when I did was very averse to hot pot in general because I was eating at a lot of barbecue places. I am glad that I manage to force myself to try new things....if very reluctantly. So when anyone mentions hot pot in NYC, the first thing that people think of are Chinese owned businesses. When people think of Thai food, they usually just think of the popular Thai street foods like Pad Thai. When I first heard of Jaew Hon a while back I was intrigued because Thai hot pot was a new concept for me....let alone hot pot in general. And I had stopped by a while back which was when I had little experience. But the place to me as memorable and now that I am more accustomed to hot pot I always thought of Jaew Hon and decided to go back recently. That particular establishment is the definition of a family owned small business and has been in that neighborhood of Jackson Heights for many years. It is located on the second floor of the building and has a very cozy atmosphere. The dining area consists of tables along the wall as you walk in as well as some tables in the back. I remember my first time dining in and one of the female customer next to my table had asked for a plastic bag which confused me (they were not offering anything to to go). Turned out she wanted it to put over her hair to protect it from the savory food and broths that were filling the room. I borrowed her idea for other restaurants and got laughed but it actually works! The place is the way I remember it when I stopped back recently. They have a section of unlimited vegetables (chinese style lettuce and bok choys, mushrooms, bean sprouts etc) frozen items like fish balls. There is actually a great amount of stuff to choose from for sides. Then for rice you have the option of jasmine or garlic rice. There are two separate rice cookers that are usually always have enough for a couple of trips. One nice surprise when I returned is finding out that in addition to the hot pot they are known for they offer a Thai style bbq option for those who prefer to grill the meats. I usually just order three or four meats at a time. They bring you sauces to the table. The Jaew signature sauce is one of my favorites among the ones they offer and there is a newer miso type sauce that is tasty as well. You get a very unique grill surrounded by a ring of chicken broth so you can boil some food while other food cooks on the grill. For the grill you need to wait until it heats up and then use the piece of fat they provide to oil the top before you start cooking. And contrary to other bbq spots, you will be cooking all your own food which is actually very fun. All the grills are portable tabletop and of course need to be refilled every now and then. The servers either come around or they leave a pot of broth at the table for you. For drinks they definitely got you covered. There is a separate menu that consists of ice tea and smoothies, hot tea, colas, beers, wine and even soju! You always have to get the classic Thai ice tea but their coconut smoothies and ovaltine smoothies are quite good! And I always tell people to save room for dessert. There is a very unique and refreshing ovaltine mountain ice dessert they make that is great for sharing with your table. I would like to give a proper shoutout to the awesome employees who made my experience very good on my recent visit. PJ was there when I showed up to eat late during a weeknight. It was not too busy and since it had been a while since I last dined at that establishment he explained some of the new menu offerings and policies to me. This place was a little confusing as to what door led where, but just note that you have to go upstairs for this restaurant and you should be golden! We came here on a Wednesday evening and the place was relatively empty with only 1 or 2 tables getting taken during our meal. This led to a relatively peaceful and quiet meal which I enjoyed so I'd say weekdays are a safe time to go without much of a wait. As an all you can eat place, their menu was pretty diverse and they had pretty much anything you can think of for hotpot - no complaints there! Their non-alcoholic drinks were also pretty large and tasty so I'd recommend one if you're looking for something a little sweet. The broths they have are delicious as well and really make the meal Thai which I enjoyed. I would say that the meat seemed a little frozen when it came out, but that was the only thing we noticed that wasn't great. Everything else quality wise and service wise was really great! I've seen reviews saying that there's a long line, but I've gone twice lately and I was able to be seated immediately. I'm obsessed with this place, not just because it's a block away, but because it is such a great deal and the food is delicious. For dine-in, there is AYCE thai hot pot or BBQ; I've only gotten the thai hot pot with the clear broth and Jaew Hon broth and I loved the Jaew Hon broth. It reminds me of boat noodle soup but with unlimited refills! The veggies and non-meat are self-serve but it's very easy to order small amounts of meat/seafood. There's thai ramen and butter garlic fried rice that I ate way too much of. I ordered another refill of the mango salad, which was delicious and spicy. I ended up having to get a Thai iced tea though to help with the spice. I love the spicy seafood dipping sauce; you're served 3 premade sauces that are excellent so you don't need to make your own. For $35pp, this is amazing. However, I also ordered takeout for $30; you only get one concentrated broth (will have to ask them next time what the appropriate dilution ratio is) and assorted veggies with your choice of meat/seafood, but it was actually enough to feed 3 girls who are not super hungry. An "All You Can Eat" hotpot with a Thai twist? Count me in! They have recently jacked the price to $35 per person (thanks inflation), but it's still a pretty damn good deal. Great for coming with a group of friends. Funny the best item on the menu is not hot pot related: Garlic Fried Rice. I literally could have 6-8 bowls of this and call it a meal. They allow you to choose two soup bases, which we opted for Clear Soup and Tom Zap. They are generous with the portions of meat and veggies you pick for the hot pot. There's not a sauce station, but they give you three different sauces ranging from sweet to spicy. Other's things to note: CASH ONLY. There's a 90 minute limit, but it's loosely enforced, until all the tables are filled and they start looking for higher table turnovers. Quite possibly the best hot pot in NYC?!? Came with a party of 3 on a Saturday night and were seated promptly. Tried to call ahead for reservations as per Yelp reviewers that recommended, but was informed they don't take reservations. This place is small and cozy - perfect for a cold night. We had the chicken broth and Tom zap broth (think beef broth with lemongrass, galangal, heavy on the herbs and really good for cutting through the fatty meat). Both broths were delicious! As for the selection, you can pick from a wide variety and everything was super fresh. We had beef, fish balls, seafood, noodles, etc. don't forget their garlic fried rice!! Definitely one of the highlights. All 3 of us really enjoyed our experience here due to the freshness of the meats, veggies, and seafood, and the broth! First, you choose two broth flavors. The broth flavors are definitely want makes this spot a lot more distinctive compared to other Asian hotpot places you see in NYC. I highly recommend the Tom zap broth if you enjoy lemongrass! It was my by far my favorite broth and I'd probs go back here solely for that broth. We also ordered the bean curd broth, which honestly wasn't as enjoyable for our group. It's a little on the sweeter side and fermented, so it's def an acquired taste and I didn't really think it paired well with most of our food selection; although, it does go pretty well with the vegetables. I also really enjoyed the vegetable selection here! Not a lot of places offer morning glory for hotpot, but they did as well as a plethora of other vegetables like bokchoy and Napa cabbage. The meat selection was adequate; it has all the main ones you would normally want for hotpot. They also provide you with three sauces to pair with your hotpot. They all have a kick to it but they're pretty good. One of them appears to be fish sauce based and that one def packs the most heat. Service is good. The tall male waiter is unprofessional. After finding this place I brought many friends, my brother, and my boyfriend here on numerous occasions and it is usually a decent experience. They accept only cash so when we plan to go, we always try to come with at least $50 cash per person. The last time I went with my boyfriend and brother after participating in a marathon. We did not plan to go out but we wanted to celebrate our achievement before heading home and knew we had enough for the bill. We paid and I told the female waiter who collected our check to not return with change and we gave almost all the cash we had, except for my last $20 to make sure my little brother could get home. The male waiter came to our table and loudly said "In New York, standard tip is 20% and you tipped 11%". So i gave him my last $20 and told him not to bring me the change. he then said "but now this is too much". I did not mind overtipping because I knew that was the last time I would ever be dining at Jaew Hon because to shame a customer like that in front of others is rude and unprofessional and unwelcoming. Especially when I was a repeat customer. You never know what someone is going through and while I understand tipping is controversial in the United States, I am happy to tip but the way he handled it was aggressive and will lose them customers. If you like hotpot and kind service go to Hometown, Gangnam, or even Spring Shabu Shabu instead. They are bigger, have more options, and are more professional. I came here a few weeks ago with my 2 friends. It was a rainy Sunday evening and we happened to get in just in time before the dinner rush happened as we managed to quickly snag a table without too long of a wait. I told the servers that I was a vegetarian, so they were able to set me up with a separate pot with veg-friendly dipping sauces, which I immensely appreciated. This place works a lot like a dim sum place in that you get a checklist of items that you wish to order. I opted for ingredients that I don't normally find in Chinese hot pot places, such as morning glory. Ingredients were fresh, the service was excellent, and I certainly ate to my heart's content. On a hunt for the best AYCE hotpot NYC has to offer, I stumbled across a Strictly Dumpling video on YouTube in which he visited this spot. I've never had Thai hotpot before and off his descriptions of the sauces alone I knew I had to try Jaew Hon asap!!!! Came around 8:30pm on a Tuesday night and got seated immediately despite how small of a restaurant it is. We ordered the sliced beef, marinated beef, marinated pork, bok choy, tofu skin, eggs, quail eggs, enoki mushroom and garlic fried rice. While I didn't love the marinated beef, everything else was so good! Especially the sliced beef. And as expected the sauces were amazing - my favorite was the middle one because it was nice and spicy. In addition to the food, the service was impeccable. The restaurant is a couple blocks from the 69th St subway station so it is convenient to get to. I was initially confused on where it was located. Jaew Hon is the restaurant upstairs and it is CASH ONLY. The restaurant is small but very clean and nicely decorated. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They offer an all you can eat experience from an extensive menu for a reasonable $35. Jaew Hon is basically a Thai hotpot where you cook veggies, meats, and seafood in a variety of delicious broths. You have a pen and a list of what you offer and mark on the paper what you want. They are very generous with the portions so start small. I was surprised at how good the quality of the meats were for an all you can eat. The sauces that accompany your meal are spicy but delicious. The garlic fried rice is fire, you will eat at least one bowl guaranteed. Definitely a great experience and worth checking out if you like Thai food. This is my first time trying thai hot pot and it was SOOO good! Came on a Saturday for dinner with a party of 6 and there was no wait. AYCE for $35 per person with a 90-minute limit. The soup and sauce here are AMAZING!!! I wish I can buy the sauce and bring it home so I can dip everything with it. For soup, we ordered the chicken broth, tom zap and jaew hon. My favorite was the jaew hon, it is SOO good! The meat here was ok, it was a bit hard to cook cause it was all stuck together. They also have a wide variety of veggies, some I don't usually see at other hot pot places. The garlic fried rice is a must try. Service was quick. While it's true there is no shortage of all you can eat hot pot places in NYC, it's also true that an overwhelming majority of them are Chinese based. (#1) Jaew Hon offers a little something different in the form of Thai cuisine inspired ingredients, and is just a stone's throw away from the most Thai area of Queens (#2). And the best part? It's pretty good. The interior of the restaurant is like many others along this section of Roosevelt Ave: small'ish and narrow. Yet in spite of it all, Jaew Hon makes the most of their space and is able to sit up to a couple dozen folks at any given time. The decor is funky and eclectic, with dividers in between some tables for added safety. While it's not always a given, I love it when Thai pop music is playing in the background. (#3) The Thai hotpot experience here is usually done with two broths at the same time, similar to the yin-yang style that most Chinese hot pot goers know well. The clear soup (chicken based) and the classic beef / pork jaew hon broth base are my usual choices, but I'm never one to say no to the tom zap (also beef / pork) option as well. There are a myriad of food choices, but the ones I appreciate the most are the marinated choice, which include all the proteins but the minced fish wins my vote. I am never one to deny a little organ meat (liver, kidney, etc.) but I do think the clam / squid / shrimp options are better in the clear chicken broth. A little morning glory, Thai basil, and dill are fun choices on the greens front. The AYCE price will set one back about $30, which is a steep increase from the $18 what I remembered during their opening just a handful of years ago. Service has always been pretty good, before and after the pandemic. Very similar to Chinese hot pot, Jaew Hon is a very cute place. The smell of fish sauce and other thai spices hit you when you open the door on the second floor. Not a huge place so I can see it getting very busy. The only reason I gave it 3 stars is because I personally can't handle much spice. While I understand it is a thai place and the cuisine is all about it, there wasn't any non-spicy sauces for me and I felt it wasn't very friendly for someone like me. I use the service on Wednesday, in the evening. The female service staff has been bad and very rude to me. Since I walked in to use the service, it made us feel very uncomfortable. We came to your restaurant 5-6 times and this time we invited friends to eat. We feel embarrassed and disappointed with the bad manners of the waiter of your restaurant. Your food is excellent and the same good quality. But your staff is the problem. We think that if you meet the same person, we would choose to use other stores instead, even if your food is good.
