First it's a seafood restaurant, so why did it not feel like one. My husband never comments on a restaurant, but he was quite unhappy with his crab sandwich. He said it had hardly any crab in it and it was over powered by the onions and avocado. He also said the bread was hard and stale. I had the halibut fish and chips. The halibut was excellent. I dont like chunky potato wedges, because they are not fries..they are chunky potatos (mostly potato)..the cole slaw was very good much like what I make a home but the slaw was chopped hours ago and was tough not crisp and it needed a tad of salt. Service was good, not great. I was surprised given how unbusy they were that we were not seated with a bay view. Anyway would we go again..um probably not. We like Gils by the Bay or the Marina a lot better. The prices are about right. read more

We went last Friday for lunch. Had combo fish and chips. I had fish and prawns, hubby had halibut and calamari. He notes the halibut could have cooked for a minute more but overall everything was very tasty. The clam chowder is not thick but actually the traditional thin stock as it is on the East coast. Though I usually like the thick, my husband was glad to see the thin stock. It was hot and tasted great. The bowls are angled so you think it is spilling but not. Friends nearby had grilled halibut with mashed potatoes and said it was very good as well. The ice tea blend was found in Hawaii, Earl Grey and Spice mix. No sugar really required. Very refreshing. It is so nice to have a seafood place at this location. The view is great. Planning on eating there again. Took photos of our meal but do not know how to post them to Yelp. read more

I had the worst ribeye steak I have ever eaten. It was a half inch thick, super chewy, and barely browned on one side. I like my steaks medium rare, and will eat them served rare, but this was rediculous. On top of that the vegetables and the potatoes were cold. read more

My husband and I used to eat here at least 2 times a month and really liked the food. The last time we ate here, which was about 3 months ago, the food was VERY disappointing. We took a chance and tried it again today. The food was much better but the atmosphere left much to be desired. Went on busy holiday, very accommodating to seat our large group. Our waitress was super slow, most other patrons had eaten & left by the time our was take. Our food took an abnormal amount of time, after asking how much longer we were told it was going to be awhile. We got quite a variety of food. Sandwiches were really small with barely anything on them. By far the halibut & chips were the best. Waitress was really ill equipped to deal with groups, our checks were not split correctly after asking to be fixed, we were told to just work it out amongst ourselves. This is our favorite local seafood restaurant. It's casual, yet elegant. The service is consistently good, our favorite is Daniella. The food is literally fresh off the boat and delicious!! If you are visiting this is a must! You are right on the boardwalk and can see the crabbers coming in with the day's catch. It's nice to see more activity and business on the Waterfront, but I wasn't impressed by this place. I had the Fish & Chips Dinner, priced at $15, wasn't worth it. The portion on the fish was small and the batter was not crisp. The coleslaw was flavorless and not chopped small enough. The "chips", sliced deep fried potato chip like slices would have been good if they didn't have some type of vinegar dressing on them and they were evenly cooked. Half of them were crisp and the rest were undercooked or made limp by the vinegar dressing.Tartar Sauce was bland and flavorless. Also it was served on a big square plate like one you'd see at a fine dining restaurant. It is Fish and Chips you know, and if it was real good I'd be happy with one of those paper lined baskets. The server asked for feedback and when I told her about my experience, she replied by changing the subject about how experienced the staff was and what a great restaurant the new owner is bringing to Eureka. Hopefully they're taking the feedback seriously. I will give it another go after the grand opening to see if they work the kinks out. Also there's no Seafood Restaurant ambiance. The decor is bland, like the food. One more thing, please get rid of those ridiculous plates. If your Fish and Chips are proper, a basket will do. You seriously need Seafood Spot Ambiance! read more

Ok, first it's just opened and it takes a place a while to get their groove and there were no red flags!!! I wanted raw oysters but they didn't offer them, seemed weird as they had cooked in the shell... We got the calamari which had a light dusting instead of a batter which was good, but could have used a bit more seasoning. They were cooked perfect, not tough. We really enjoyed the chowder, great flavor and not the normal rue filled glob. The dinner salad was really nice, but not crazy about the house dressing and there wasn't another choice. Our mains were ok. The Cashew encrusted sole needed salt, but what was well cooked. The only thing that said cashew was the name... The potatoes (mashed?) were a glutinous mess. We also got the fried fish combo, halibut and rock cod. Both were down well and the batter was light and well cooked. The chips were good, but not crisp. Some people like fresh fries that are not par fried....but I don't. I want them crsp. The slaw was nice, but had a flavor I personally didn't like, but it was fresh and still some crispness to the cabbage. The space is kind of cold, but a great location and view. We will go back after they have had some time to work out some kinks. read more

We went on a Tuesday at 1pm. Place was about half full. Server was very nice but we waited quite a while for our fish& chips and my fish sandwich and when they came they came at the SAME time as our chowders and salad . We certainly would have preferred to have the starters served first but she said they had run out of chowder and had to make more. So the good news is it was freshly made; the bad was that we got everything at once. The chowder was too thin to be satisfying and the "bread ball" or whatever it was that was floating in it, wasn't good.. The fish was fine, rock cod for the F&C and sandwich. If you order the sandwich be aware they don't use a sandwich roll or bun, just two pieces of toast. $15 for F&C but includes soup or salad. Nice fresh ingredients. The bar might be a better bet than the restaurant. We'll try it again, someday.... read more

Food was very good, view was great, and the service was horrible. The service started off slow but they were pretty busy so we were okay. Once the chowder came I asked for Tabasco sauce and it never came. I asked again and still didn't come. I went on and ate my chowder without Tabasco so it wouldn't get cold. Then when our bread arrived on one small plate we asked for two addition plates for our bread, never came. We asked a different person for plates, they never came. When our white wine was served our waiter said he would bring the wine cooler but never brought it to us before we finished the wine. Towards the end of our meal the place had cleared out and was not busy. Server didn't check back in with us until we were done eating. We even had to wait for our check to arrive. So food good, view good, service bad bad. So the food gets 5-stars and the service gets 1-star, so the average is 3-stars. read more

Wow, what an awesome surprise!! We heard that this place had mixed reviews but I really think they have turned things around! My wife and I and some friends of ours stopped in for a meal and we are glad we did. For starters the server was really nice and attentive and seemed to know a lot about the menu and the source of the seafood. Very informative. Also, we were served our water in mason jars, how cool is that? I had a local Jamaican IPA and my wife had Husch Chardonnay. Our friends had iced tea and it was so nice and different that they made us try it. It tasted fresh brewed with a hint of orange. It was really original. We ordered shrimp cocktail and hummus appetizers to share and both were fantastic. The cocktail was flavorful and had 4 large sautéed prawns around it that popped when we bit into them, they bursted with flavor. The hummus was a fresh spin on the classic Mediterranean dish. Then came our soup and salad. Our server explained that they had recently changed their chowder and asked what we thought. It was rich and creamy and seemed to have clams in every bite. The perfect consistency! My wife's salad had a nice mix of very fresh vegetables and what we came to find out was a house made blue cheese which was amazing. When our entres arrived we could not have been more pleased. We all got something different and I ended up tasting everything. We ordered the sautéed halibut dinner, the fish tacos, the rib eye steak, and a seafood fettuccine alfredo. Every dish was amaaaaaaazing! We managed to save some room for dessert and we're not let down. We shared a granola berry sunday!! It was fresh and light. I know new restaurants take some time to get things right but I'd say Jacks has done a great job! Everything we had was fresh and tasty! Great quality food prepared perfectly! I have lived in Manhattan for years and just moved here and have been somewhat disappointed in the restaurants in the area. Finally there is an authentic seafood restaurant in Eureka/Arcata. The location is great, ambiance was spot on and the service was very attentive. The food was super fresh with a hint of sophistication. For lunch my wife and I had the tacos 2 different ways, both great and also enjoyed the clam chowder. We meet one of the owners, very nice guy and had a good handle on how to run an ocean to table offering with a modern twist. We are looking forward to docking our boat and enjoying the outdoor patio. read more

I have eaten at Jack's twice in the last 7 days, once for lunch and once for dinner. At lunch the four of us tried appetizers, including calamari, crab cakes, and mussels. We then moved on to clam chowder, seafood pasta, crab Louie and fish tacos. We were all pleased with the portions, the service and the food. It was my daughter's birthday so they brought out a nice dessert on the house. Last night we arrived during Happy Hour and ordered fish tacos, mussels, coconut prawns, and clam chowder. They were out of the pan fried oysters and the seared ahi, due to closed roads and the inability for deliveries. For dinner I ordered the Caesar Salad with grilled prawns. I love a good Caesar. I was very disappointed in the lettuce used as well as the dressing. It was not a Caesar dressing as the menu states. It was an oil dressing. The portion was fine, the grilled prawns were fine, but the dressing was terrible. I wish I would have returned it. I would recommend to the chef he use good crisp romaine and a true Caesar dressing with anchovies, which I know not everyone likes, but it should be available as an option. The service was good and we enjoyed the environment. I would recommend Jack's, but ask specific questions before you order. read more

Not good. The waitress would rather talk than take orders. I saw fresh oysters on the menu. Asked about raw oysters and the response was that the chefs were having trouble shucking them. Laziness in my eyes. With all the competition here, not being able to shuck oysters is inexcusable. Anyone can throw oysters on the grill. We didn't even stay to eat. Went 2 blocks up and had fresh oysters served with courtesy and a smile. They need a new chef! read more

We have been weekly customers since they opened. We will not go back after tonight's experience under the new owner. We waited over an hour for a burger and shrimp po'boy with 16 customers in the restaurant. The food was horrible. Undercooked and cold. I complained and asked to see the manager. We had a friend recommend Jack's because he had heard it was good but hadn't yet gone himself. After looking at the horribly mixed reviews we debated and even looked at other places. Ultimately we figured, "What the heck, let's just give it a go". Many of the reviews complain about the lack of attention given from the staff. Our experience was the complete opposite as just about every staff member said welcome, assisted with clearing completed plates, thanked us for coming and wishing us a good evening. Maybe they have responded to some of the reviews or that's just how they are. Personally service is not my focus as I'm far more concerned about the quality, execution and taste of my food. I asked our young and extremely polite server Jackie what she would suggest and why. She gave several options that she had tried and what she went back for. Her recommendations were very helpful and seemed very sincere as well. For starters we had the coconut prawns. They were very fresh, decent sized and the coating was well executed. A sweet chili lime type sauce accompanied them and it provided a complimentary flavor. My wife had beer battered fish tacos. Three well portioned tacos arrived. There was slight spice in the guacamole that may be a bit much for some but we both thought they were fantastic. I ordered the halibut with potatoes and fresh grilled vegetables. Cooking fish to perfection is an art and apparently Jack's employs artists. My fish had a very slight sear with a moist center topped with a dollop of butter and small edible greens. The potatoes had a sweetness to them and best of all were not mush whatsoever. Lastly were the grilled squash and zucchini that maintained a nice crispness and a had a light glaze added. Finally was the dessert of poached pear on graham cracker crumbs topped with ice cream and caramel sauce. This was the only aspect that I felt was somewhat lack luster. The pear was cold and the graham crumbs were exceptionally plain. A suggestion would be to make a graham crust / cookie similar to a cheese cake crust and a room temperature or warmed pear. Again overall we would recommend Jack's. If it's a busy night, reservations may quell the lack of attention some expressed. read more

My husband ordered the Halibut and Chips and it was delicious, they even have 2 kinds of Cole Slaw. Our kids shared fish tacos and loved them. I devoured the Seafood Fettucinni and it was divine. Noisy. Why do restaurants not invest a small amount of money and make the environment pleasant by adding some acoustic panels? COME ON! You almost have to scream to hear each other from across the table. The service was good, nice young lady that was attentive. Clam chowder was a little watery and mine had 2 pieces of clam, while my wife's had many. The fish and chips were plentiful, oily and had a thick batter not much flavor. The chips "Jacks" that are all over the menu were not special. They are deep fried thin potato wedges, no seasoning. No wine list, few beers, and no paper towels in bathroom to dry your hands. I took my three kids to the boardwalk for, well, a walk along the bay. My three year old had to immediately go to the bathroom (of course, right when we got there) and jacks was 20 feet away. I asked the woman at the front if my son could use the bathroom and she said yes. She was very nice and smiled, which was nice in this sometimes gloomy and unhappy world we live in. It was a refreshingly kind attitude. So A+ on friendly staff. The bathroom was clean, so A+ on cleanliness of the bathroom. After leaving, I noticed a sign by the front door with the daily special and soup of the day listed. I'm a sucker for a good French onion soup with nicely melted gruyere cheese atop it... mmm... being recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes I decided to look up the carb count of French onion soup and according to google, a cup would have been around 8g of carbs, so i was glad my love of French onion soup could continue, minus the big crouton (:/) Anyway, I went back inside and decided because they were so nice and let me use the bathroom, I would grab a bowl to go. The woman working the front brought it out front for me because my kids were playing outside the front doors and I didn't want them getting accosted by the sometimes less than savory characters that actively roam the boardwalk near the restaurant (although I didn't see any of them actively shooting up heroin, so that was good). After getting my bowl of soup to-go, we got in the car and went home (it had started to rain which happens a lot here). I got home and opened the bowl of soup in its container. I was a bit confused.... where was the gruyere cheese melted on top? Had it sunk to the bottom during the drive home? I stirred it up... but no, no cheese whatsoever. I paid 8 dollars for broth and onions. I guess it was good for my cholesterol, but I was really looking forward to that perfect bowl of French onion soup. I still ate the soup of course and due to the spot on broth and great texture of perfectly soft and delicious onions, I decided to still give 4 stars to this restaurant experience. I can tell you I also judge a restaurant quite a bit based on cleanliness of bathrooms which says a lot about how much staff cares about how clean things are. A clean bathroom for me = clean kitchen and grooming standards. While I was in the restaurant, I took notice of the beautiful view of the bay. It would be a very nice restaurant for a date or anniversary or just a nice meal with your significant other. Had the French onion soup contained the classic gruyere cheese melted on top, I would have given jacks a 5 star review. I will go back to this restaurant someday and have a meal. I was disappointed with the meal I ordered and the overall experience. It is a VERY CASUAL restaurant; more so than I expected. I ordered wine and they just brought the glass to our table, didn't poor it at the table AND it was only about 2 ounces of wine. :-( My husband's combo fish platter looked good, but he mentioned that it tasted like it was frozen fish. My clam chowder was ok, but it was a small serving and the half crab cake sandwich looked unappetizing and was also very small. My children enjoyed eating my soup and sandwich. The bite I had was pretty good, but it was pretty basic and I felt like I could have had just gotten crab cakes and bread at Costco and it would have been the same. Decided to wait a month or so after their soft-opening to visit since I heard they had some kinks to work out. Went on a Monday night, our server was friendly and we were offered water right away and ordered our beers fairly quickly. The clam chowder was GREAT, I liked that it was thinner than the usual heavy cream based chowed, and it was full of good clams and so flavorful. I ordered a swordfish special which was a little over-cooked and oddly paired with a pesto pasta. My partner got the baja style fish tacos, which were good, if a little spicy. We will try it out again, it's a nice location and honestly worth it just to go for a bowl of clam chowder. read more
