I've only been to Peg's once, but I will say that the one visit topped Jack's overall. They're both killer breakfast places (Jack's serves lunch as well), but IMO they're different types of restaurants.
A lot of Jack's appeal is based on its status as an "old school diner" type place. It's been the site of at least a couple of movie shoots--the one I remember seeing is from a Reno-based movie called "Hard Eight" directed by Paul Anderson ("Magnolia"). I love the little two-person booths--the little table makes those big ass plates of food seem even bigger. I'd call it your basic American diner in the sense that they have a large menu with lots of variety, but not too much experimentation. Omelets, pancakes, chicken fried steak, burgers, sandwiches, etc.
Peg's seems to be targeting a slightly younger crowd, with more moderate portion size than Jack's HUGE breakfasts and lots of variations on eggs benedicts, various types of grits, etc. giving it a bit more creative flair with the ingredients--on my sole visit to Peg's, I had an andouille sausage eggs benedict with fresh jalapeno and a side of a mild chunky salsa-like vegetable garnish. Thinking back, Peg's seems a bit healthier and less greasy than Jack's as well.
But sometimes, breakfast with a lil' grease helps it really hit the spot. I've always left Jack's feeling happy, satisfied and extremely full . Definitely 4 1/2 stars overall. A great way to start the day, but I'll need at least a couple cups of coffee to counteract the urge for a nap after.
If you've read my other reviews, you know that once I get stuck on a meal I really like, I'll stick to it...although after reading about the cheese sauce on the potatoes, I might have to mix it up next time.
I always order the chorizo omelet and throw in an extra $1.50--that gets me about half of an avocado, sliced and served on top of the omelet. I think they're three-egg omelets, but covering half the plate, that sucker looks closer to four-eggs possibly...the other half of the plate being loaded down with a giant pile of delicious home fries. I usually get a biscuit instead of toast, but can rarely make it through the whole thing.
The reason I took a star off (I'd usually rate Jack's a full five, and feel very guilty even as I'm typing this) is because when I went yesterday, they were out of salsa and I had to resort to Tabasco. The salsa that Jack's makes from scratch (Juan's salsa, I don't think they mention it on the menu) is so mind-blowingly good that it can take your meal from very excellent to life changing. It's hot but not overwhelmingly so, and ranks in my top three as far as Reno/Sparks "house salsas." Pretty impressive IMO that diner salsa can beat out most taquerias. If Juan followed the lead of, say, the Grubstake in SF, and started bottling the stuff, I'd gladly invest in a full case.
Even without the salsa, the chorizo was spicy enough to blend perfectly with the eggs. Service is always friendly and efficient, an even more impressive feat considering how packed Jack's always is. The coffee and water refills are consistently frequent. They're only open until 2 p.m daily so plan accordingly. I haven't ordered lunch items in a while, but I remember them being comparably big. Heidi's (R.I.P.), located across Virginia from the Peppermill, offered similarly huge quantities o' grub, but quality-wise it could vary. What was great one weekend would be under-seasoned and disappointing the next. Not so with good ol' Jack's, it's always the same and it's always good.
Juan...please make sure to make an extra-large batch of salsa next time...I promise if you have any left @ the end of the day, I'll give it a good home.... read more
