Overall, I think Jack's is one of the better BBQ places in Seattle, especially if you like Texas-style BBQ. I have gotten takeout, as well as held a large party here, and both times, the food was really good. They have individual sandwiches, as well as combo dinners, but both times, and went with the picnic combo, which includes two sides: Brisket: juicy and moist, the best brisket that I have had in this area. Pork ribs: my second favorite; great smoke flavor Sausage: I got both hot and mild, and both were good Pulled pork: pretty good, although I like the other things in the combo more Smoked chicken: this was just ok: the breast part was a little dry to me. Mac and cheese: I like this side the best: cheesy without overkill Collard greens, cole slaw, ranch beans: these other sides were pretty standard You also get slices of white bread, along with some pickles (really good). One of the main reasons why I like Jack's is that the BBQ sauce is on the side, so that you can taste the meat and the smoke. When I was there for my party, Jack came out a few times to explain his restaurant and to check up on how we were doing: it is always nice to see the owner at the restaurant. So, I know.. this place has rave reviews and everyone loves Jacks. I on the other hand don't really see myself coming here again. I popped in at 11AM during the week to beat the SLU lunch rush and grab some food to go. What was amazing is the gentleman who took my order was BEYOND helpful. I didn't even need to look at a menu, he guided my choices beautifully based on questions I asked him about the menu. So for lunch I ordered the brisket sandwich, greens a side of pickles, spicy sauce and coleslaw. My order arrived quickly and I was back at my desk in a flash to enjoy my lunch... but hey wait... where are my pickles the guy who took my order was raving about? Where is my side of BBQ sauce? Sad face... apparently it didn't make it into my bag. No worries, I'll still eat it, because it's cold outside and I'm too lazy to walk back over there and I'm extremely hungry. So here's the thing.. the brisket... BEAUTIFULLY COOKED. It was tender, perfectly smoked and melted in my mouth. And that's where the highlight ends. I took the coleslaw and added it to my brisket sandwich.. it was just okay. The biggest dissapointment... the collard greens. They were far too bitter. They tasted they'd been made only an hour before and were in dire need of a hamhock or something to deepen the flavor, decrease the bitterness and add some soul to them. They were far too vinegar(y) for my taste.. but in Jacks defense.. I am accustomed to southern flavors (Georgia) and not so much Texas BBQ.. so I guess that's how its supposed to taste in Texas... Just try the meat candy Jacks BBQ serves and you'll start to appreciate what BBQ is all about. Just because a place has a giant smoker outback doesn't mean they know how to use it. But in this case JACK does and is true PIT MASTER. Outside of the smoker the place is first class. The've reinvested and remodeled the previous business and gave it a down home BBQ feel to either belly up to the bar or sit in the Restraunt and eat. So let's talk about the food OK. The Mac n cheese is almost better than moms . It's not creamy or gooey but just right. If your into coleslaw then you'll appreciate JACK's.. It's got a different taste but very tasty and blends perfect with smoked meat. OK now the BBQ MEAT CANDY is awesome, the kind of BBQ you tell two friend and so on an so on. The Brisket shows the perfect smoke ring around the outside of the flesh to show you what low & slow is all about. FRANK knows you've been waiting to see "THE RING OF SMOKE" on your meat ( I KNOW I DID). All the attention to detail in the smoking process has created a brisket just like in TEXAS. I'd recommend a cut from the large end because all the fat renders thru the meat to create flavors you won't believe. Now onto the sausage it's pure magic if you like sausage (but it's not spicy FYI). The ribs had the smoke ring of love and was very good. I was a bit full so I'll try them again. Aw man. I was still excited about this spot, but it failed us on separate occasions. I always give businesses more than one chance. Overcharged at bar previously. This takeout order was the straw that broke the pork butts rump. Arrived and asked about seating, saw many long empty tables. Nope, "you're in for a long wait for 3". Apparently all of it was reserved. No problem, should have called ahead. Let's do takeout & find a sunny park. Asked about sides and sizes, yes that has slaw. Paid for order of beef sandwich, chili and a la carte pork. Bag arrived in a decent amount of time, which was good as there are big wide open doors and smokers within feet. Sucks when you're allergic. Lucky I looked in bag, no utensils, sides or napkins. Asked politely for fork & sides. He hurriedly grabbed 11 forks and a pile of napkins and literally threw them roughly in the bag in my hands. Okie. I then asked about slaw as it was nowhere to be found, and was corrected, then charged for a side even though it was supposed to be "on sandwich".. nope. just meat. I paid as he looked at me like he didn't want to budge. I had overtipped cash of $8 on a $28.00 Amex order so I advised him to please use that for the $5 slaw addition. Asked about a cool park he would recommend close by? His response: "you have a smartphone, look on your map app." Found the missing chili sideways, under the meat...leaking red oil everywhere on the bag contents. On top of all this, the meat & hot food was cold, greasy, and the $5 sides were most assuredly under 5oz while also tasting terrible - Chili is extremely oily, not much meat, half a 6oz container full. DO NOT GO HERE!!!!! Seriously I thought I would try this place out despite the mixed reviews. Well I should have never went here. The food was GROSS no flavor, the only thing that was kind of edible were the pork ribs they were smoked perfectly but had absolutely no flavor seriously no flavor...not even a pinch of salt! The food was Cold and tasted like it was cooked weeks ago!! My husband had the pulled pork and couldn't make it to the restroom fast enough. He was sick before we even left the place! I politely paid my bill and asked to speak with a manager. I spoke to the manager and all she said was "oh I am sorry"! I was beside myself and left so fing pissed off!! You trust such recommendations especially when the person vouching grew up in mid west & knows his meat. And that is how we ended up here on a early Wednesday evening m, as these guys close by 8 PM. After ordering a round of drinks, we explored the menu & I being the greedy foodie order for a Double Trouble with a choice of 2 meats & 2 sides. Didn't know what trouble I was getting into. I opted for Pulled Pork & Chicken with the Texas Caviar & Mac N Cheese. We did order some buttermilk hush puppies to share, which are essentially deep fried corn bread balls with jalapeños served with butter & a ranch sauce. First time trying it, the corn bread was s little sweet with less punch from the jalapeño, but tasted wonderful with the butter& ranch sauce. When my main arrived it was a regular sized portion of both the meats which were humongous. It was a challenge to finish them,& I did a decent job with the Pork which was delicious, nice & moist, flavourful with the hot sauce, & the accompanied sides. I must say I loved the Texas Caviar as compared to the Mac n Cheese. The chicken was a little too dry for me, so I managed to finish less of it. Throughout the meal I felt like Adam Richman in Man Vs Food, struggling to finish the huge portions of food. We did order a portion of ribs to share, which I loved as well. This place has been a steady stream of respectable dive bars for the last few decades, and has finally come into its own as a BBQ place. Do you happen to remember the weirdly dated 80s-style mural when it was Bogie's? Weirdly dated because it was put up long after the 80s ended. Well, that might give you some sense of where this place is--down in blue-collar turf, near the train tracks and railyards and flightpaths south of town. They're doing great things here as a bringer of tasty meats. You actually don't notice when you're walking up just how old this place must be. The parking lot is packed, and the outside looks tidy and well-lit. You walk in to what very nearly comprises a proper lobby; there's a long black leather sectional couch with a huge coffee table, big woven rug, and amusements for the kids (coloring books and the like). There's a bar area over there and a dining room over there, both full of tables and chairs but neither feeling the least bit cramped. The bar hosts occasional live music and even has a "cool little lounge area," according to our server. The cool lounge looked like it was more tables and chairs, but I didn't go over there to feel the cool breeze myself. Those tables and chairs--none of them match. I dig that. Feels homey, feels less expensive. They're definitely vintage to some degree. Gives it a good casual setting. The menus come out in clear plastic sleeves, and the servers recite the beer list for you. They do have a bunch of cocktails, which run to the face-scrunchingly sweet, if my dining companions' reactions were indicative of anything. The beer runs from the meaningless to the very good in a nice compact list, and they're all chosen to pair well with barbecue (mostly quaffable, mostly light or lightly bitter flavors, with one big smoky-sweet stout). We ordered every side dish, which were all better than they are at most places. Nice seasonings, especially in the Texas Caviar, beans, and collards. The hushpuppies were tied for best dish of the whole night: perfect level of moisture and doneness, great texture. Little cornmeal dumplings (not catfish hushpuppies, just cornmeal). The chili is solid. The ribs and both briskets were tasty. Beautiful smoke rings, perfectly even cooking, nice bark that wasn't charred or chewy. A little bit on the dry side, a little bit on the salty side, but nothing you can't fix with a little extra sauce and another glass of water. They dry-rub everything and smoke stuff 12-14 hours, so dryness and saltiness are the most likely foibles, given the style. The hot link was a tiny bit mealy (just very slightly) but seasoned beautifully, and I wanted to fight for more bites. If you order the plate style, you get a slice of white bread, thinly sliced white onions, pickle chips, and pickled jalapenos. The jalaps were especially good. You can get single servings, and you can also get trays or baskets of stuff served family style. If you go family style, your dining plate is a plastic basket with a piece of waxed paper in it. They put tons of napkins and (mismatched) cutlery in a mason jar on the table for everyone to grab at. Everything here feels just right. The service is friendly and on point without blathering on or being pushy. We stayed forever and they quietly put up chairs without getting too close and interrupting us. Food comes out quickly. They're happy to bring out doggie boxes. The prices are a tiny bit high; with a couple of beers you can easily spend $30-$40 a person here if you want to try a lot of different things. They do have some bargains on the menu if you're just going to eat a little bit. The menu is tightly focused--ribs, brisket, chicken, rib tips, hot links. Sides. That's it. Had jacks today for lunch! Had the brisket bbq plate with savory beans and Mac N cheese ! Brisket my only complaint is I wish I ordered more ! It was delicious, juicy and a great cut of meat. Did the bend test from pit masters and it was flawless. The Mac N cheese was bomb.com and the beans was delicious. I look forward to returning and trying out more of the menu items. When it comes to barbecue, Seattle's a nice seafood town. Let's be honest, we're bush league when it comes to this most venerable of meat-cooking techniques. The term 'barbecue' in this town is evocative of sauce, not meat. Take Pecos Pit, a Seattle tradition for over 30 years. They're serving up glorified Sloppy Joes, not barbecue. No offence, but the meat there is an afterthought. Ask anyone who eats there regularly why they like it and they will invariably start talking about the sauce. I'm not saying that they don't put out some tasty sandwiches. I'm just saying that it's not barbecue. Jack Timmons and his team might just be the people to put Seattle on the map as a bona fide barbecue town. That is no small task, but Jack is up for it. He's been bitten by the BBQ bug He's been doing The Seattle Brisket Experience as a pop up all over town and has been building a devout and growing number of fans. He attended a 'Barbecue Summer Camp' put on by Texas A and M's Department of Meat Sciences. ( I don't know which phrase in that sentence pleases me the most; 'Barbecue Summer Camp' or 'Department of Meat Sciences'.) He has a couple of behemoth smokers that look like they came off of the set of Fritz Lang's classic movie Metropolis. Basically, this is a man who's not kidding around. BBQ is his passion! I got the sliced brisket and pulled pork with sides of collard greens, potato salad, cole slaw and beans. The brisket was sublime. It had just the right amount of smoke to it. It was tender and yielding, almost supple. And oh, so juicy! One of the better meat experiences that I've ever had in a long, long time. I can understand how Jack has become so obsessed with with barbecue. To be able to produce something that phenomenal has to be immensely satisfying! The pulled pork was nice - tender with a little smokiness to it. The sides were solid versions of the classic BBQ side dishes. To be honest the experience started off badly. We walked in and they were out of a lot of the meats. Literally the only thing they had left was pulled pork, sausage and bacon. So we were pretty much ordering pork and sausage. Right after we ordered we noticed that a table by us had ribs. Then a whole brisket was put out and being served. So we felt kinda lied to about them not having the other foods. However, after a bit, we heard that the food we were seeing was actually ordered in advance for a reservation, so that was definitely better. I would say that it would have been much nicer if they had kept it in the back so other patrons weren't seeing it, because our poor waitress had to deal with all the other people seeing it and complaining. When we got our food, the pork was very good, as well as, the potato salad. The mac and cheese was cold, but good otherwise. Our waitress put the first round of drinks on the house due to the poor experience with the sold out meats and our poor host who had brought us just to try out the brisket he loved so much. After about an hour and closing out on our meal, the brisket that had been reserved in advance had some left over and Madison (our waitress) was kind enough to give us a half pound of it for the table to share, and it was phenomenal. I was glad I got to try this, cause it was hands down the best thing they had to offer. I went here for a food blogger event and had the chance to try nearly all of their dishes. WOW. What an awesome event and thanks to Jack and Danielle for coordinating! Awesome venue with parking, large picnic tables, and a bar. It can definitely accommodate large parties. As for food... We got to try the frito pie and hush puppies for appetizers. Hush puppies melt in your mouth and the frito pie in the chip bag is a genius idea. Next they gave us a sampler of their sides including beans, collard greens, cole slaw, mac and cheese, black eyed pea salad, and chili. The black eyed pea salad was probably my favorite out of all of them. I also really liked the cole slaw and I'm not a huge fan of cole slaw in general. Then we really got to the good part. The meat! We got to try the brisket, pork ribs, beef ribs, chicken, two types of sausages. My favorite beyond any other was definitely the beef ribs! They only have them on Tuesdays and I would recommend EVERYONE to try it. It's juicy, tender, and will melt in your mouth. We also got to try the pecan pie, pecan pralines, and banana pudding. The banana pudding and the pecan pie were sooo good, I couldn't decide between which one I liked more. All in all, a great experience. I can't rave enough about the service received from Max, Jamie, and Anthony at Jack's South Seattle and Lake Union locations. Kudos also to Viviene (Catering) who helped text people and connect us. LOTS of issues with delivery service and Max (Marketing Manager for the South location) took matters into his own hands to deliver our office order himself! I mean REALLY!! Out of bounds customer service that will have me ordering from them again for small and large groups because I know they care about the quality of their food as well as the customer who is buying it. I honestly don't know why people love this place so much. I got the Texas Trinity which I was told was a lot of food. I thought, I can always take it to-go if I have leftovers. When it came out, I was underwhelmed by the size of it. Maybe my server has a tiny appetite, but I finished most of it relatively easily. The rib I had was so dry that it almost tasted like jerky. It reminded me of those wet locked jerkies that are juicier than the completely dried out ones, but still jerky. It was tough and I had really work at it pull it apart. The brisket had a nice smoke ring so I was excited, but it too disappointed. It lacked any flavor and the meat was stringy and didn't want to pull apart. Finally, the sausage was cold and I could feel all the congealed fat in my mouth. It wasn't a pleasant experience. The chili was the saving grace. It was really good and I would have rather had a giant bowl of it then the rest of my meal. The collard greens were sort of tough and lacked that real pork flavor. I don't think it was cooked for very long. Sometimes fatty sometimes no. For the prices. I want high quality all the time. I'm not one for bbq sauces so I'll leave my opinion out. The sides are just standard. Same for the deserts. We were visiting the area prior to our cruise. This place was horrible. We did not make a reservation and was quoted 30-40 minutes. Granted we had a large party, but we waited a total of over 90 minutes.... without any communication from the staff. We kept asking and each time, we were told an additional 5 minutes. We even asked to split up our party and waited another 25 minutes before it was agreed to by the staff. People with reservations waited 45 minutes to get in. We even spoke with the manager. She was defensive and did not even acknowledge our frustration or offer anything to us. After much anger and frustration, another 20 minutes passed by and we were seated. It took only a few minutes to order our food and drinks. Unfortunately, after ordering, it took over 25 minutes to get a simple ice tea, even after reminding our waitress three times.... The problems did not stop there. The appetizer took 15 minutes for simple queso and chips and the main course came out about five minutes after that (BBQ is already pre made and only needs to be cut and served!). The meat came out lukewarm at best. Brisket was cut against the grain and was not great. The pulled pork was good but again cold. There was more meat with the sandwiches than the platter. I understand this is Seattle and NOT Texas. Still it has good reviews and we thought we would try it. The place had a good atmosphere. Unfortunately, the bathrooms did not have soap... thank goodness for hand sanitizer. I am extremely disappointed with this place. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Was here on a Saturday with friends. Five people total. The service was pretty slow. Our waiter had told us they were missing a person and that he was pulling double duty. Still, I think we were there for two hours, which is patently ridiculous. Otherwise, the people were pleasant. The hush puppies and rib tips we got as an appetizer were both tasty. I got the Texas Trinity. The ribs were kinda tough, and didn't seem to have been smoked long enough. The brisket had a good smoke ring, and tasted fine, but the pieces brought to me were sliced irregularly and that was odd. The sausage was fine. The Texas Caviar was really good. The mac and cheese was okay. As for dessert: Do not under any circumstances order the banana pudding. Unless you're looking for a sweet banana soup, that is. The thing that was brought to me that I was told was banana pudding bore absolutely no resemblance to the parfait-like thing that I'm used to growing up in the Texas Hill Country. I was not upset that the portion was quite small, as I didn't have more than two bites. Honestly, I like the format and the idea of this place. We live just a few miles away and have heard a lot about this from our friends and from the news so we were excited to try it out. The wife and I were craving some BBQ last night and we could not be happier that we stumbled upon this place... We ordered the two double meat BBQ plates. The pulled pork and ribs were the best that I have ever had and the mac and cheese has me craving for more! The pulled pork literally melts in your mouth! Free refills on the fresh lemonade was also a bonus. No sauce on the meat, but you did not even need it! Our server Sean explained that that this was "Texas Style" sauce on the side. I make a point to seek out Seattle's best barbecue places. In my hunt, I have now been to several and Jack's sits near the top for a number of reasons. Though the restaurant has only been open for a couple of years, it feels like it has been there for decades. The parking lot was full on a Tuesday night, a testament to the crowd this place draws in spite of being in a warehouse district with no noteworthy surroundings. You will be salivating from the moment you step out of your car and smell the sweet, smoky air. My friends and I got the picnic for 4... we wanted to try everything! While no meat or side disappointed, the highlights for me were the brisket and the hot links. Paired that with some 2bar bourbon and made for one epic meal! They also give you two sauce cups: one regular one spicy (it actually does have a good kick). The food was a bit cold when it came to our table... Maybe keep the food trays in a warming drawer? Just found out they cater so... Gonna try to find an excuse to have them cater my next team outing! read more

We just visited this establishment. It was a wonderful surprise that we walked by it! This restaurant is very rustic and manly. I was surprised by the incredible hospitality we received. Zane our waiter was phenomenal and he treated us like regular customers. This was a pleasant experience and I highly recommend this place for serious meat eaters. Growing up in both Kansas City and Texas, before moving to Seattle, BBQ has a special place in my heart. Needless to say I was excited to hear about Jack's and the Texas style BBQ tradition he was bringing to town. Today I finally had a chance to try it out and went with the Brisket plate w/ Collard Greens & Potato salad. My thoughts: Brisket: (Pros) Great smoke ring & flavor. The meat was tender and not dry. (Cons) The brisket was a little on the cold side. I'll attest this to growing pains and getting use to serving a restaurant full of ppl and can only see them improving in that dept (not a knock against the quality of the meat overall). Sides (Collard Greens & Potato Salad): Let me first start by saying in my opinion sides have often been the Achilles heel of many a great BBQ joint. (Pros) Given that I felt Jack's exceeded my expectation. The potato salad was spot on for me (not a bunch of mayo & other junk added). The collard greens were perfectly cooked (not to hard & not to mushy). (Cons) Ok, maybe not a con, but my only suggestion here is that I felt the collard greens could have used a little more flavor (meat or fat added). BBQ Sauce: This brings us to the BBQ sauce. I start by saying I'm a fan of serving it on the side Texas style (and usually only eat a fraction of my BBQ with sauce). (Pros) None :( (Cons) Everything! Not be overly harsh, but the sauce was absolutely horrible IMHO. I seriously thought the waitress gave my marinara sauce in a bottle by mistake! Color me stupid but I've been exposed to the various schools of BBQ (KC, Texas, NC, & TN) and never tasted anything like this. I would say it was borderline gross. Conclusion: Solid BBQ and sides are surprisingly good. However, Jack, please do something about that sauce!!! With the quality meat and sides your putting out that BBQ sauce is embarrassing. read more

We wandered into this restaurant after passing it a million times on our way to Costco, and I am so glad that we did. First of all, service was very friendly and prompt. They were accommodating when we requested customizations to our order, and were able to offer guidance when we were deciding between multiple menu options. But most importantly, the food was awesome! Not only was the meat tremendous (and packed a spicy kick), but all of the sides were on point. We tried the coleslaw (not too wet), Mac n cheese, and ranch beans. The beans were seasoned perfectly. This place is delicious you can taste the Texas style Bbq. The Texas tea will get you going and taste great. The service was cool too and the staff even hooked it up with a pecan pie to go for our flight. Awesome place if you're craving good BBQ. read more

Read the reviews and thought wow, have to try that. We drive by on our way to work often and it's always full of cars so what were we missing. From my point of view, we weren't missing anything. We all ordered pulled pork so that's all I can review but everyone in our table of 8 said their pork was dry, as was mine. They give you sauce on the side, either hot or mild, I tried both, but there wasn't enough sauce and I asked for extra to make that pork less dry. Choice of lots of sides, some got potato salad, some got mac and cheese and one got pickles. The pickles were the hit of the day. Obviously home made and really good. Mac and cheese and potato salad, just so so. If you're in the area and hungry, it's an ok stop but for a special trip, not worth the drive. read more

I'm not sure what the hype is all about at this place. My overall impression of the food: very dry, but tender, good smoky bbq flavor. I've had the bbq here a few times, once takeout and the most recently last night. For both those occasions, we had the platter for 4 which is actually plenty of food for 5-6 even. Comes with their pork ribs, pulled pork, one cheddar and one jalapeno sausage, and their brisket. Accompanied by 4 sides as well. It's served with their spicy and their regular bbq sauce, I believe pickles and bread available by request. The spicy bbq sauce is not really flavorful, but just a dull burning sensation. The regular sauce is good, slightly sweet. As far as the meats go: Pork ribs - good flavor, very tender. This was probably the moistest out of all their meats Pulled pork - very tender, slightly smoky flavor. Very dry if you don't cover in bbq sauce Sausage - I didn't try Brisket - nice smoke ring, coated in seasoning that was slightly charred. Good smoky flavor, but choked on the dryness because my first bite was a little too big Mac and cheese - I didn't try, looked okay Collard greens - very good flavor, this was probably my favorite part of meal Potato salad - good sized chunks of red skin potato. Not very flavorful, but the only flavor I was really picking up on was mustard and even that was subtle. read more
