Saw this old school looking diner as we were passing, and decided to go back and try their breakfast. Visually, there is a lot going on in here, as there should be. This family owned restaurant has been around for 40 years, so there is a lot of history represented here. When we walked in, we were the only people in the place, so service was quick. We spent a fair amount of time talking to the owner, who was very friendly and willing to share his family's story with us. I loved that the cook (also family I'm sure, but I didn't ask) was at the grill, which was in full view of our table. It was like watching my mother cook when I was a kid, and it tasted the same way. Our Buckeye Brutus Breakfasts were hot and delicious. Nothing fancy, but that's what was so great about it. A classic breakfast that totally hit the spot. When we were done, the owner offered us to go coffees for the ride home, which was very much appreciated since we were driving back to Wisconsin. I've given this place more than one chance, and it just keeps getting worse. At Jack & Benny's, the food has always been subpar bland, poorly cooked, and nowhere near worth the price. But today took it to another level. The server (who made a point to tell me he's worked there for 30 years) was unbelievably rude from the start. I simply asked how much the bacon cost, and instead of answering like a normal person, he snapped "look at the menu." The delicious gravy held it all together: eggs, sausage, cheese, ham, hash browns, and a potato pancake - feels like I'm missing something. Yeah, it comes with two pieces of toast, too. When you arrive you write your name down on the list. The owner/manager was very nice. She was attentive and kept our coffee mugs full. The go-to diner experience in North Columbus! If you've never gone, it can be a little confusing on how to check in. When you walk in, you write your name on the list instead of talking with a host or server. The place is very small so you must arrive early. I ordered the buckeye breakfast special and a pancake on the side. It was more than enough food! Everything came out perfectly cooked. The only criticism is the service; when I was handed my napping wrapped utensils, the servers hands were soaking wet so it make the napping completely unusable and a little off putting. We came in from out of town visiting Ohio University and we were looking for a neighborhood diner. We found this place on yelp and the pictures look good so we decided to try it. Worst mistake ever. Starting out everything was fine. Seemed like a place that locals gathered & the atmosphere gave a mom & pop type diner. We felt comfortable & pleased. The waitress greeted us & started taking our order but it got very confusing because her English was not good & she read back things we didn't say & we had to keep correcting her. Needless to say our order came out messed up we didn't get some things and other things were not prepared the way we asked & the food was simply not good & cold. The corn beef hash was grainy & greasy, the eggs were supposed to be medium but fried hard and rubbery. The hash browns were burned, but we did not complain about the food at the time, the waitress, however, was upset when we told her about our order being messed up and had an attitude & literally ignored our table after she brought the food. When we finally got her attention, she was dismissive and turning her back on on us as we try to ask for certain things like extra butter, extra cream, etc. we also ordered the orange juice which was in a very small which looked like a child size plastic cup (maybe 3 ounces) not enough for an adult. We drank it and asked for a refill which she gave us after we literally had to find her and get her attention. It was when we asked for the second refill that she informed us there are no refills. It would be $3.99 per drink. We were taken aback, wondering why she didn't tell us this after the first refill. We decided we had enough of the bad service so we asked for the check. She brought over a written paper which she had scribbled our order on wit handwritten prices all over the place and the bill was way overpriced. We asked her for a legible bill which itemized what we ordered. And she got upset, raised her voice and told us this is how they write their receipts. Another person that worked there with purple hair came over arguing beside her creating a scene. So then there's this big scene where I am telling the waitress we need a receipt that we can understand and there are things she charged us for but never brought to us. So there is now chaos as the cooks jump in & start arguing with us as we complained about the awful food. We just ended up paying the bill but I told the waitress/manager/coworkers no tip. We still paid for the food out of courtesy, even though it was terrible, but in no way, were we going to pay that rude waitress along all with all the coworkers ganging up on us customers as the manager stood watched & giggled. I will never ever go to this place again, nor would I advise anyone else to go. They have no respect, bad service, terrible food & they overcharge and do not value their customers. I wouldn't take my dog here to eat ever again. Forced to leave 1 star but they don't even deserve that. read more

Looking for breakfast basics, then Jack & Benny's is the place. A hole in the wall diner with limited seating. It was busy when we walked in. They have a self-serve waiting list that you add your name to. My friend and I got seated within 5 minutes. Which wasn't bad for how busy they were. Surprisingly they offered fresh squeezed orange juice. I got a large, it was tasty. I also got an omelet and their pineapple pancake. Both of which were something I could have easily made at home. We tried to walk in but they were packed and we couldn't get through. The 'hostess' snapped at us to close the door even though there was no way to get inside and people were coming in behind us. We get through and stand in the only area that's open and she again YELLS at us to move away from the area. How have I never been here before? I've been to Garcia's next door, years ago, and I went to OSU. Somehow I just skipped over this local tradition. Today Sweetie and I were out and about, and wanted breakfast. This was nearby. There was a 10-15 minute wait, partly because it was around noon on a Saturday and partly because it is game day. Service was excellent start to finish. She had hash browns with cheese, and a side of bacon, with a couple of pancakes. I didn't try any but it looked good, and she enjoyed it. I had sausage gravy and biscuits. I wanted to get something healthy to balance that out, but I had yogurt and fruit yesterday and since those were the only healthy sides I saw on the menu, I just went with chorizo. So, sausage with a side of sausage. The biscuits and gravy were just okay, which is disappointing at a diner. Dense, flavorless biscuits, and a fairly generic gravy. Oh, well, I ate it. The chorizo was two small patties, and was very tasty. A little spicy, and mixed with the biscuits and gravy it livened things up. Fresh OJ, a real greasy spoon place that isn't greasy, and great service push this up a notch. We'll be back, I'm sure. Prices are a bit high, so it won't be often. read more

GRATUITY ALERT..... We were presented with a bill of 136.72 for a table of 6. We took the menu calculated our bill to be 104.45 without tax. I asked our server if the total included gratuity, she said no. I then asked for a recalculation of the charges. Server came back with a corrected bill of 104.45 which we paid by credit card. Its simple math.. 136.72 / 1.22 (22% included gratuity)= 112.07, 112.07/1.75 (sales tax 7.5%) = 104.25 We asked if gratuity was included so as to not leave 20% on the bill of 136.72. that's double tipping. Our server was dishonest about including the gratuity when a simple yes would have given her a 22% tip of $24.65. which we would have been happy to leave. As a group that treats servers well & tips well we decided the dishonesty was not going to be rewarded by leaving a tip. Lying & attempting to steal a double tip is not good service & not good business. As we left... our server was preparing to seat a couple, left them standing there to look on our table for her tip. She asked "no tip"? I told her no and the reason why is because you lied to our entire table about including the gratuity on the initial bill. of course she denied it.... See the simple math above as proof... Shady & should be illegal!!! maybe it is, I don't know, but she didn't scam this crew from Youngstown. read more

He was waiting for us to arrive, and the waitress there racially profiled him because he's Hispanic and was dressed casually. She was extremely rude and made him feel really uncomfortable. Honestly, as a parent, I'm pretty upset by this. It's not cool for anyone to be treated this way, especially in a place that's supposed to be welcoming and hospitable to all customers. The waitress but I am assuming is the owner she was not friendly or warm welcoming. The booths were so small that we were so uncomfortable. Our food had no taste to it had no flavor.
