We wanted to go somewhere just for drinks, and whenever we go to a restaurant for only drinks, we have seen servers not being happy about it, as we are not heavy drinkers either, 2cocktails each is our max. Never disappointed whenever we go to Jack Allen's Kitchen. Every dinning experience is like you're being dipped into the holy water of Texas. The baptism by home cooked Texas dishes are exactly what you want when eating locally sourced food. Once you are seated you start with the pimiento cheese and flatbread cracker, even if you don't like pimiento cheese just have amnesia for one meal and let your tastebuds decide. Paired nicely with a round of fried green tomatoes and a local brew, it's how Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston would have wanted it. Main course dishes that span the eclectic pallet that is at the very heart of Austin eating. I do not recommend anything over any other dish but I have had the Crab stuffed Chicken more times than I can count. If you close your eyes and throw a dart at the menu you will be satisfied and have a new favorite at the top of your dinner list. Wind down your meal with a decadent piece of caramel apple bourbon cobbler, perhaps to go? You're sleeping like a baby and talking about your meal the next day! Jack Allen's has half off all appetizers and a dollar off all cocktails and wine. And Monday night has great happy hour deals. Anywho, I had the house red wine and we ordered several of the happy hour appetizers. My favorites were the chips and salsa and the barbacoa quesadilla. It was so delicious and I will be ordering that again. You'll have to try that quesadilla! Most of all, Our servers were the best. We had two, One was in training and you could not even tell. Dude what???? Who know a random chain restaurant would have one of the best enchiladas I have ever tasted? Was it because it was Barbacoa? Was it the mojito I had? Or the fact I was starving?? Who knows? What I do know is that it was delicious. Now, the rice and beans were chain restaurant vibes, but I was so pleasantly surprised by the enchiladas. Came here for the first time, and wasn't impressed. The place was nice and clean. The staff did a good job serving. I am not a fan of the dish I ordered. Came here to celebrate a kid's birthday and had a great experience. One child in our group has severe food allergies, and the staff handled it with incredible care and patience. The manager even came over to help us walk through the menu and recommend safe options, which we really appreciated. We went here during their happy hour (3:30-6:30pm M-F) and stuck with their happy hour items and we got super full. Appetizer is 1/2 off and drinks are $1 off and I believe $4 off wine bottle. We always enjoy their barbacoa quesadilla and guac on the appetizers menu. Kids menu options are great too. Our son always loves their kids Mac & cheese but today he got cheese quesadilla. Excellent brunch menu! I made a reservation and got a great booth on the side with a great view but still quiet enough to hear my dining partner. We started with the guacamole and chips and it was fantastic. They don't skimp on the amount or put annoying strips of lettuce underneath to add volume. It was the perfect start to the day. We all settled on the same dish: the ruby red trout. I would say it's the best thing on the menu; flavorful, plenty, and affordable. For dessert, we tried the apple crumble with ice cream. Though I normally don't crave apple desserts, the apple crumble was salty sweet and the ice cream was my favorite because it tasted homemade. Three and a half of us visited for their Sunday brunch. They do have a great brunch menu including cocktails. We started with the Barbacoa Stackers. This App is large enough for 3 to share. The barbacoa is spiced perfetly and very tender. This app is served with refried black beans, Jack cheese, JAK slaw, Cotija cheese. I could do these as an entree. In fact I continued with their Barbaco Enchiladas. Like our App the meat was tender with plenty of spice. One nit it came with an egg topper but I was not asked how I wanted my egg cooked. Our table also ordered the Steak Taco & Fundido Skillet. This entree was piled high with beef tenderloin, veggies, Oaxaca cheese, and grilled jalepenos. I had to remind my companion diner to inform the server how she wanted her steak cooked as she was not asked. A service highlight was how accomodating they were for our special 10 month old guest. Her food was served quickly and we were able to enjoy our brunch by keeping her occupied as we dined. The JA's in the CP is good but this my favorite location for HH and SundayFunday brunch. read more

The food was outstanding as always. This visit I went with the trout for my entrée and it was cooked to perfection, it was very tasty and was a very generous portion size. My one complaint on this visit would be on the service. It was Very slow and not very attentive, which is very much non-Jack Allan. I will treat it as a one off and just go onto another day My dining companions enjoyed the fish tacos and a delicious mammoth salad that left her plenty of stuff to take home. The birthday dessert was a nice touch, along with a birthday card signed by all the staff members was pretty cool. I'm pretty picky when it comes to my pimento cheese, I loved my mother's and I rarely come across someone else's recipe that I like! Service was great! I'm a fan of Jack Allen's. My SO not as much. I love so many things on their menu and frequently get the trout both salad and dinner. Last time I got their tacos which were good too just not as good as trout. The pimento cheese are awesome and I don't even like pimento cheese. Service is quick and staff are mindful of timing to check on diners which is nice. They are pleasant even at closing which means a lot. read more

Let me just start off with saying that we received amazing service here! Our server was super friendly and patiently explained the menu with us. We opted for the chicken fried steak which I thought was a bit too chewy of a texture for me (not as crunchy as I'd prefer) but still a wholesome meal with the mash and cooked veggie sides. The fat jack burger was what stole the show! thick meaty patty with a yummy kick from the jalapeño mayonnaise & hickory sauce. My favorite plate- dare I say was the dessert. It was a nice little surprise. The apple cobbler was warm, cinnamony, with the sweet crunchy candied pecans and streusel. The vanilla bean ice cream really pulled it all together. I would literally come back just for the cobbler! This place is a great for bigger parties, plenty of parking and lively interior. Wow. We came back after a great first visit & had an extremely unpleasant experience. We got there and wait was 20 minutes so we sat at bar while waiting for a table. Ordered two mocktails - the Mango Rita and the Cucumber Mint Tonic - as well as the special appetizer of fried zucchini. Drinks took a while to get and after about 15 minutes we were told it looked like they were out of zucchini but he'd try to wrestle some up for us. Our table was ready and they made us cash out at the bar despite our drinks not being ready. No mention of the zucchini but it wasn't on our tab. We paid and moved to table. Our server, who I won't name but the Manager is aware of, came over and introduced himself. He asked if we wanted water and we said we did. I asked him if he could check with the bartender to see if they were able to get the zucchini. He did and they were sold out. I asked if they had onion rings and he said they did so we ordered those instead. We also placed our food order - a steak and arugula salad and the trout. He left. We never got our water. I had a few sips of my drink, which tasted like dirty water. Our onion rings came. They came with ketchup and I asked the runner for ranch (which we never got). The onion rings were awful - soggy, greasy, under-seasoned. But our server never came by to ask. Minutes later our entrees arrived. Still no water, no ranch, no server. I had a couple of bites of the trout - which was delicious - but I needed something to drink. It had easily been 15 minutes since we'd seen our server so I went to the hostess stand, where the manager (Gary) was. He came back to the table where I explained we didn't have water, we didn't care for the onion rings (which were also supposed to be an appetizer) and that I wanted to swap out the drink. He took care of getting us water and replaced my drink. We shared with him that the service was seriously lacking tonight, unlike our last visit. We ate and didn't see our server again until we were almost finished. By this time, we were over the lack of service and said we didn't need anything. We were almost finished eating. I had finished and he cleared my plate. He offered us a free dessert and we said no thank you. He came back to drop the check and attempted to take my husband's plate while he was eating. This upset my husband, who had already had it with the service. Long and short, the server asked (not nicely) what the issue was - if he'd "done something" to us. My husband said no and to just leave it alone. The server persisted and then the two of them started getting a little heated, attracting attention from other diners. I stepped in and (calmly) explained the issues we'd had with service. Now he started to give me attitude and I politely reminded him I was answering his question - factually - not raising my voice, not arguing. This calmed him down a bit but he was still being very defensive. My husband jumped in and told the server we wouldn't be back due to the horrible service to which the server replied "Good because I never want to see your face again". While I'm sure that felt great in the moment, it is a clear indicator of the maturity level & emotional regulation of this server. I understand having a bad night. We all have them. But this server was so rude on top of simply not doing his job, it was insult to injury. Don't ask for feedback if you don't want to hear it. The service was absolutely terrible and his wanting to argue with us about our experience made the situation so much worse. He stormed off & left the payment machine, after deducting the drink and onion rings I pointed out shouldn't be on the check. I paid and requested a receipt but several minutes later - nothing. I had to ask the manager for it on the way out the door. There was a video camera facing our table. I hope management reviews it. Being treated disrespectfully on top of bad service makes for a horrible experience. The food here is good but not worth the unpleasant experience. I don't normally write reviews, but after our experience at Jack Allen's, I absolutely had to because the hostess Julia truly made our entire night. When we first arrived, there was unfortunately a mix-up with the waitlist. The male host had completely lost track of our name and seemed visibly annoyed when we politely tried to explain that we had already checked in. It was a little uncomfortable and for a moment it felt like we were being treated as if we had done something wrong just for asking about our table. I'm hoping it was just a bad night and I'm sure he was stressed due to it being a busy Saturday night but after waiting and being brushed off, my husband and I were beginning to regret giving the restaurant another chance and that's when Julia stepped in. She immediately noticed the confusion and handled the situation with such professionalism and kindness that the entire mood shifted. Without making a scene or making anyone feel awkward, she calmly checked the situation, acknowledged the mistake, and seated us right away at a high-top table. What could have easily turned into a frustrating experience was completely turned around by her calm and welcoming attitude. What impressed us even more was how incredibly engaged she was with everyone around her. Throughout the time we were waiting and getting seated, we watched her effortlessly communicate in Spanish with several guests, speak with my husband, and coordinate large parties and tables with her coworkers without even a hint of confusion or delay. Seeing a hostess so confidently move between languages and make every guest feel understood and welcomed is honestly rare. You could tell she genuinely cared about making sure everyone was taken care of. Another thing that really stood out to us was how many regular families clearly loved seeing her. Several guests greeted her by name, and you could tell she had built real connections with people who come in often. She was especially wonderful with the kids -- taking the time to talk to them, joke with them, and make them feel included while their families were waiting. It was really heartwarming to watch and showed how naturally she connects with guests of all ages. To be completely honest, my husband and I were hesitant about coming back to Jack Allen's in the first place because my sister, Maria, had a pretty negative experience during her last visit. But Julia completely changed that for us. Her professionalism, warmth, and ability to handle a stressful moment with grace turned what started as a frustrating situation into a really great dining experience. Julia didn't just seat us -- she completely turned the night around. She is exactly the kind of person every restaurant hopes to have at the front door, and we are incredibly grateful for the way she treated us. What a nice surprise to find this place during our stay near Austin. Don't let the name fool you, the food is amazing. It is freshly prepared with some interesting combination of flavors. The descriptions will make your mouth water just from reading the menu. Oh, the pork dish and crab stuff chicken were off the chart. Their cheese appetizer with barbacoa to start off was the right choice. Overall, many of the selections were more upscale, although the prices were beyond fair. Service was friendly and the manager was thankful to hear about our experience and even convinced us to top off the meal with the Carmel apple bourbon cobbler served in a skillet and topped with ice cream. We finished it too fast for a picture but the memory lives on in my taste buds. The inside seating is comfortable, causal and relaxing. Sweet today for brunch as the significant other (SO) had a hankering for pancakes. Made a reservation for noon, and arrived around the same, and was promptly seated. I believe we were the only folks that day to make a reservation.... Great, great service, super friendly waitress and other team members. Nice ambience, didn't feel rushed and felt very welcome and comfortable. My significant had the Stacked buttermilk pancakes and ordered a side of bacon, which she declared was beyond perfect ( the bacon ). I had the Chicken and Biscuits. Both dishes were great, as were the smashed breakfast potatoes that came with my order. I could only eat half of my order, and brought the rest home. Collectively we devoured the pancakes. In addition, the So had a grapefruit mimosa which she loved. Very nice brunch on a Saturday, will return again! We also got a nice set of crackers with pimento cheese (yum) and ice of fruit to start. Service is great at this location! Met my friend for lunch and had the barbacoa quesadilla, and for my main course, the steak and arugula salad. I like this place because they keep updating the menu with new and local seasonal ingredients. I've never had a disappointment with this restaurant. The chicken and vegetables soup, tasted so simple like it is made for someone who is sick at home. Not good. The sauce on my crusted salmon, was so gooey, it is not restaurant standard and quality. My first visit was a spontaneous one, that coincided with happy hour, so I at the "U" shaped bar. I was greeted by the bartender and given a menu, but the staff were changing shifts and it took a bit longer to have my order taken. I couldn't resist ordering the special margarita made with blood oranges which was so good I had a second one. Sticking to lighter fare, I ordered the house salad with ranch vinaigrette and the barbacoa quesadilla with slaw. Both were flavorful, fresh and not overly priced. I ordered another house salad and the soup special, a robust barbacoa stew, to take home to my guy, which he enjoyed! Comfortable atmosphere and plush leather bar stools let me enjoy my meal while watching multiple TV screens or contemplating the large interesting Johnny Cash painting hung by the bar area booths. Love Jack Allen's! Especially the 1/2 price appetizers during happy hour! Arriving at about 5:15 pm, the restaurant was fairly slow. The decor and staff are welcoming, so I always feel relaxed when I walk in the door. We had stopped by for a drink and an appetizer but when we learned of the 1/2 price apps and $1 off drinks, we ordered 2 apps (crunchy catfish and layered queso) plus 2 drinks (cucumber jalapeño margarita & prickly pear margaritas with jalapeño). Our server, Faith, was wonderful - friendly, helpful, cheerful and attentive. I love the complimentary pimento cheese and all the amazing foods.
