My husband and I celebrated two birthdays with our friends at Jack Allen's Kitchen. It was an even better experience this time around. They put our group of 8 in the main dining area. Our waitress was awesome. She was super friendly and checked in on us regularly. I ordered a cosmopolitan to drink. It was strong with just a little bit of sweetness and I thought it was good. For appetizers we had the pimento cheese and crackers and we ordered the Chicken Nachitos. The Pimiento cheese and crackers are always good. The Chicken Nachitos are delicious. For my entree I ordered the Stewed Chicken Tinga Tacos. I was expecting premade tacos but ended up with deconstructed tacos. The chicken was served on a skillet and the tortillas were on the side. The rice and black beans were combined which I prefer. There was a dollip of gacamole on the side. The Tinga Chicken is fantastic and full of flavor. The tortillas were soft and warm. The rice and beans had a great flavor but were not overpowering with spices. To finish our friends both shared their choices of dessert in celebration of their birthdays. We are fortunate enough to live around the corner but let me tell you this is worth traveling to from wherever in the Austin area you might be. Just before the 360 bridge you'll find Jack Allen's in this small industrial parking lot. The restaurant has a warm homey southern feel to it as does the entire crew. We have been enough that we now know several of the staff members and they make us feel right at home every time. They have a full staffed bar and loads of outdoor and indoor seating. The food is amazing - the 5 spice chicken pasta is our go to granted we've had probably everything on the menu! But the best part of JA's is the happy hour. M-F from 3:30-6:30 (yes that's right, 6:30) they have HALF off all appetizers which are all the portion size of a normal meal and $2 off all drinks. I have yet to find anywhere that has a happy hour even close to this one. My boyfriend and I will get dinner each getting one app and a drink for under $20 which is unheard of! Our personal favs are the crab dip, quesadilla, raviolis and the guacamole but you can't go wrong with any of the options. Best part is there is almost always parking which is awesome when looking for a HH or dinner spot. They also have brunch! Long story short. My go to is their country club salad but I came in ravenous last Friday night and got the Chicken Fried Chicken with their green chili gravy and delicious mashed potatoes with skin and seasonal veggies. It hit the spot but Katie got their special of pork with a peppercorn glaze and she out ordered me entirely! I had no idea a pork chop could be that tender! I'm a Tex-Mex purist (yes, that's a thing), so when I saw it had toasted pumpkin seeds and cheese on it, I was disturbed. So clearly you know I LOVE a good happy hour ! I should of known when I tried the candy at the door , this was going to be a great food! Start off, we were offered the Pimento Cheese tasting with crackers as we sat at the bar! Happy hour was from 3PM-6:30PM, & the bartender let us know it's half off apps & a $1 off of drinks. An it's the FULL size appetizers is what blew my mind ! We're both not really in to Cold Slaw but they had JAK Slaw on the Barbacoa Stackers and the bartender Tanya said we had to try it! I will follow her wherever at this point because it was so good lol ! We expected like little burgers, the look of your average stacker, WAY BETTER then that! Everything had such a great taste! Great service on a large airy patio that feels very pandemic-safe. Everything I've ordered has been delicious, and the cocktails are excellent. The Sunday buffet is just ok. But ordering off the regular menu is always good, and the service is warm and friendly. Ambience is nice: not too loud to hear a conversation. Try the chicken fried steak, the grilled ribeye, or the quail. When we were leaving, it was raining heavily, and of course we had not brought an umbrella. (And we are elderly.) This was the west Anderson location. Two waiters insisted on using their umbrellas to escort us to our car, resulting in them both getting drenched. I've never been so touched. Came to Jack Allen's for a team lunch and here's how it went: Service, stellar. Jill was on top of it and super sweet. As for the food, I ended up getting the crispy salmon. It had a great crisp (as the name would suggest) and the sauce that came with it just elevated the flavor to the next level by giving it a yummy twang. I have 4 colleagues so here are their thoughts. Colleague 1: She got the crispy fried chicken sandwich (with no trimmings) and she enjoyed the crisp of the chicken and the soft bun. Colleague 2: She got the buttermilk fried chicken salad and loved it. Something to note is she likes light dressing and felt they did a good job about not drowning the salad Colleague 3: My manager got the 5 cheese macaroni with anchiote chicken. The mac n cheese itself was bland but he said the chicken was very flavorful. He's a hard critic so I trust his food opinions Colleague 4: he got the Ruby Trout entree and he was very impressed with the quality of fish, felt the apple slaw was a great compliment to the main. If you don't eat beef, you might already know Jack Allen's Kitchen has a delicious burger with a veggie patty that will satisfy any burger craving, even for meat eaters. It was this craving that prompted my friend and me to settle on JAK360 for lunch this week. Can I tell you how disappointed I was when our waitress (who must have been having a bad day) said they were out of veggie burgers? Super disappointed. We asked for more time to decide what to order (and honestly I thought we'd never see her again). JAK's menu is not exactly filled to the brim with non-meat options. I've had their grilled ruby trout with sundried tomato walnut pesto, and once was enough. Even though I wasn't "hungry for" anything but a burger, I ordered the fish tacos. A taco with grilled black drum? It definitely sounded promising. Unfortunately, there was only a small piece of fish in each taco, and the fish-to-sauce ratio was way off (that is, not enough fish and way too much sauce, so much that my first bite was just sauce and tortilla). All-in-all, the whole experience was a disappointment. First, of course, we didn't get our veggie burger craving satisfied, but on top of that, our waitress seemed annoyed that we even showed up. She offered little help with our no-veggie-burger dilemma, disappeared for most of the time we were there, never refilled our glasses, and stacked plates on the table in front of us. Gross. Jack Allen's ambiance could best be described as casual fine dining, a nicely decorated space with a "sit in my kitchen" vibe. I sat at the bar, and the service was spot on! Asked for a recommendation since it was my first time and ended up with the chicken fried pork chop. If you've never had one, suspend judgement, it's likely not what you'd think. The chop is thin and clearly brined, so is tender, juicy and flavorful. The breading is light and not greasy. The gravy takes it over the top, green chilies..... lord. We had one hiccup with the reservation. It was set for 7pm, but the hostess mentioned that we should've set it 15 minutes prior. The place was busy so the table wasn't ready in time. We got the barbacoa quesadilla appetizer- that barbacoa was crazy. It had almost a barbecue sauce flavor, and we were blown awayyy it was so good. I ordered the 13 spiced chicken pasta, I ate the whole plate yall it was soo flavorful, it had lots of sauce, noodles were cooked perfectly. I was licking the plate. My bf got a burger, I think it was the killer cheeseburger I can't remember but he loved it. For dessert (which I can't believe I had room in my stomach for but when food is this good you make room) our server recommended the blondie pie. Yall. Just get it. Its so soft and rich and it melts in your mouth and I want this pie for my birthday now. And to top it all off, this huge meal was affordable. We thought it was going to be at LEAST $100 and it was around $85. In this economy you have to appreciate such an affordable and quality place like this. Idk if the cooks were in a good mood or what. Great service . I always appreciate being able to sit outside on a nice patio and having servers wear a mask. I heard they are known for trout which I never had before so I got the entree. Very impressed. Nice flavor not fishy at all. Tasted very fresh. Prepared with love I also liked the rice which had corn and the veggie I think spinache.
