I've been wanting to try this place for years. I Always drive by when I'm in McLean and I went in yesterday for an early dinner. My experience was blah. ..The dining room was pretty empty. The bar area seemed to be a bit more buzzing and energetic. I told server it was our first time time and she encouraged us to get surf and turf. I opted for an upgrade of the steak (8oz instead of 6oz.) The entree took over 25 mins to come out and I was starving. When the food came out, The steak and lobster tail were delicious and The steak was cooked to my liking (medium well.) I had asaparagus and green beans with pecans for my side order. This was very filling and I ate everything. I had mango sorbet for my dessert as I have a dairy allergy. It was decent. It was just a little too sugary for my taste. I suspect on a non holiday and happy hour there are more people there. If you need a quiet place to go on a date , meet, or low key this is the place for you. Warm and welcoming. With the weather turning cold we celebrated a birthday lunch at J Gilbert's. We arrived separately and each of us upon arrival was greeted with smiles and taken to a booth by the fireplace. Brandi, our lovely waitress, helped with selections. I had the BLACKBERRY JALAPEÑO MARGARITA, absolutely gorgeous. For lunch I had the JUMBO LUMP CRAB MELT. Crab meat mixed with cheddar cheese held in a crispy sourdough bread with tomato, and perfect remoulade sauce and a side of sweet potato fries - a lunch so tasty and big I had to get a box and enjoy it again for lunch the next day. Our birthday dessert selection, with helpful guidance from Brandi was Apple Blonde: butter cake, caramelized apples, vanilla ice cream, toasted pecans. Management did reach out and was very apologetic and concerned about our negative experience, so I decided to give them one more try. I'm glad I did! My partner and I started with the crab cake appetizer. The crab cakes were delicious. I got a ginger pear whiskey fizz as a drink (I think that was the name...) And it was very tasty. I had the scallops over risotto and the scallops were cooked perfectly. My partner had the wagyu burger and said it was very good, but we both agreed the scallops were better. We shared lobster mac and cheese which we enjoyed. We ended the night with the strawberry cheesecake, which was very tasty even though we were very full by then. Overall she was decent but not exceptional. Our food was good but the meal wasn't memorable, and I found that the meals were just oddly paired: - The chicken and waffles had a few random pieces of cut of sausage that weren't good - The shrimp and grits had a random dressing-less salad like mix on the plate - the omelet would have been much better with the potatoes instead of two pieces of bread that were bigger than the omelet. My favorite thing? The smashed potatoes with peppers and onions. The ice cream was really good too but the cinnamon ice cream had a weird crumbly texture. Overall our impression is that we don't get out much to brunch so we want to have a great (not good) brunch. Also the drinks were just ok. If you live nearby and want a place to drop in every once in a while to eat, this brunch is fine.... But for a date, or memorable time, I'd pass. read more

We had the Manhattans and those drinks were made right. The chocolate cake was dry but the raspberry ice cream was delicious. My server was nice enough but he took his time getting to us in the beginning. We also sat with dirty dishes for an extended amount of time and I just expect better from a restaurant of this caliber. UPDATE: Bill, the manager, reached out to me and invited us back. He even stopped by our table to check in on us. First, our server, Lydia, was fantastic! Very attentive and kind. I took my family and ended up spending about $220 but it was worth it. The fried calamari appetizer was very flavorful and crisp with jalapeños for an extra kick. My parents very much enjoyed the Seafood Mixed Grill and the Blackened Chicken Pasta. The scallops were seared perfectly and the chicken was very flavorful. The jumbo lump crabcake was amazing. - The only thing less than perfect was that the salmon was a bit overcooked and dry...but was "still very good". The house sauvignon blanc my parents ordered perfectly complemented their entrees and they thoroughly enjoyed it. I enjoyed my 6 oz. sirloin with a mushroom risotto and grilled asparagus. I wanted to like this place. Family went for hubby's birthday. He loves steak. We got shrimp cocktail and Oysters Rockefeller. Pricey apps not a lot of shrimp or oysters. Kids had 6 oz filets with lobster Mac n cheese and asparagus. Fillets were good, sides were meh. Five asparagus spears and not nearly enough cheese or lobster on this pasta. I had scallops with lobster risotto. Risotto was way too al dente and salty. Scallops were decent sauce , but was way too thick. Hubby's rib-eye was good mushroom risotto also too al dente and lobster Mac n cheese-- see description above. Service was fine. Food was not worth the price or a return visit. J Gilbert's is a nice fine dining restaurant in McLean that my family and I frequent. It's a "go-to" spot for entertaining guests and family visiting from out of town. The menu has a good variety of dishes no matter your dietary preferences and there is also a pre fix option that is reasonably priced. They have a great wine and liquor menu but the beer selection is on the lighter side, but you'll find at least one ipa available. The service is great and the restaurant has a nice, cozy vibe with the aroma of a wood burning stove. If you find yourself dateless and still want to catch a game on tv, there is also a nice sports bar area inside as well. Overall, this is a very family friendly establishment with a great menu and friendly service. read more

Absolutely ruined what should have been a no-stress Thanksgiving. We made our reservation three weeks in advanced and confirmed on the day. When we arrived the place was slammed, and we were told that it would be at least 30 minutes, but by the density of the crowd it would have been over an hour and probably two. We had the luxury of leaving because it was just the two of us. If we had brought guests we would have been forced into their grueling endurance test. Stopped in for lunch today, glad I did! Ordered the half rack of ribs with creamed corn and bacon casserole, and frites. The ribs were fall of the bone tender, the BBQ sauce was perfect. It was so easy eating the ribs. The creamed corn casserole was very tasty, the only critique would be that it needed a bit more seasoning. Your job as a bartender is to listen to complaints or hard day stories, not share yours. With all due respect, no one cares. Ordered the prime steak salad. It was underwhelming to say the least. Huge oval plate- 1/4 wedge of iceberg, few crumbles of cheese, and the smallest little piece of steak I've ever seen. Smaller than a card deck. And looked even smaller on the huge plate. We didn't have reservations and there was a 20-30 minutes wait. We were afraid we were underdressed but the other patrons ranged from men in polo shirt, cargo shorts and flip flops to full on suits. The ladies' dress also ranged from casual to dressy/cocktail. The hostess was friendly. Our server Christian was attentive and made recommendations which was helpful. Food was delicious. The sourdough bread for the table was fresh out of the oven so hot but crispy crust and soft inside. The calamari appetizer came with two sauces for dipping. The sweet n sour sauce was light and delicious. I really enjoyed that it came with fried jalapeño slices. The watermelon margarita was ok. I probably wouldn't order it again, even though I had two. It seems they are in the process of redoing the floor. This restaurant stinks. I felt as if I was sitting in some shady kind of place. It was our anniversary and we had made the reservations. When we reached there we were shocked to see the cemented floor, dust everywhere, stinky smell from the unfinished floor! If I were the owner, I would close the restaurant and do the job that needs to be done and then open it up. We walked out of this place & went elsewhere as it didn't feel upto mark for our occasion plus ofcourse the smell, the muddy feel on the shoes and weird feeling .. This Wednesday we came for happy hour and our server, only girl server in the bar area was not receptive. As for the food- has great potential- we had shrimp durango twice but second order definitely lacking, first was superb; thus, the inconsistencies! Sliders were good but our calamari looked malnourished compared to the next table, it was half empty and noticeably smaller, in comparison. The cab sav 6 oz looks more like 4 oz, the Hemingway lacked alcohol, another drink was good, again, with the inconsistencies!!! Anyway, it's a hit or miss for sure! I really don't want to say anything more bad or good so a 3 is appropriate.
