First time experiencing Redlands Grill. I was not disappointed. Drinks, food, service....all were amazing!

I think I found my new favorite restaurant. The ambience is inviting, there's a wine cellar/cooler that is actually the focal point of the room. The service is impeccable, Lexi was our server and she was fantastic! Extremely knowledgeable with regards to the menu and actually the restaurant itself. We started with the avocado bomb... half an avocado stuffed with a seafood medley that leaves you wanting more. The Ribeye Maui was an excellent cut of meat, perfectly seared to medium doneness. The smashed potatoes were delicious, seasoned just right. The southwest salad with the cilantro vinaigrette was definitely lipsmacking. Pair the meal off with a Markham Merlot, romantic ambience,and you have a perfect evening. I'm adding J Alexander to my favorite restaurant list. read more

Why does Redland's (Germantown Parkway, Memphis, TN) not have BLACK WAITERS AND WAITRESSES? I've been to this establishment quite a few times. Very professional and quite delicious. As a person of color, I find that is bizarre.. I got time... Tips are above the average and I will no longer tip if race is an issue behind hiring Black professional waiters and waitresses.. I GOT TIME!! REDLAND'S please do NOT try to counter-response by saying you have Black employees ( all hosts and cooks that do not experience tips as large as waiters above average). This restaurant is in the suburbs of Memphis and so I did not hold it very high in expectations for a quality steakhouse. We ordered two steaks but my medium filet mignon was almost well (absolutely charred and blackened on the outside) and my mom's medium well prime rib was almost bloody. Asked for a buttered baked potato and it came fully loaded - had to bring me a second potato with just butter. They have a great wine cellar with glass walls that you can see lots of bottle of wine but the staff KNOW NOTHING ABOUT WINE. I had to ask five people to help me pick a wine and they were honest that no one there knows any of the wine on the list. They even said the sauvignon blancs "taste like water and you don't want to drink any of those." The server made me leave the table to walk all the way across the restaurant to the bar area to "ask someone there about wine." If he was smart he would have brought someone to our table. They even gave me wrong information about the wines on the list. The liqueur we asked for (Drambuie) was a mystery to the young server and asked me how to spell it and said they probably didn't have it. After 15 minutes he brought us one. I wouldn't go back since there are way better places in Memphis to get steak cooked to order and drink quality wines. The prices aren't bad though! read more

the attention was terrible and I didn't even sit down to eat! I called to make a reservation and they took all my information and phone number and they told me that I would have my table in 45 minutes. Upon arriving at the site and checking the remaining time after 30 minutes they told me that my name was nowhere and that I had to wait 2 hours if we wanted to eat. It was very disrespectful since they made me transfer to the place and I wasted my time. I gave the name on the door of who answered my call and they did not solve anything. It may be one of the darkest restaurants I've dined at in quite a while...but it's also one the best restaurants I've had the pleasure of eating at also! I went for the trout with rice and, though it's not ON the menu, I also had the grilled zucchini. Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT pass on the grilled zucchini! It was better than the plank grilled trout! And trust me...the trout was incredible too! If you're wanting dessert, better make plans on taking home part of your dinner because the portions leave no room for dessert. This was our first time here and they did not disappoint!! Caesar salad was the best. Steak was succulent. Mac n cheese was truly out of this world and the carrot cake? OMG--if everything else was subpar or bad, I would return for it alone. Absolutely the best I have ever had and have finally found the carrot cake of the Gods and Goddesses. This was my first time eating here (March 16,2019) and this place was clean. The workers were very polite. They all were neatly dressed in black with neck ties and NO UNDERWEAR (pants sagging)showing. Any manager that allows that in their establishment needs to be fired. But the food was unbelievably good. I was very impressed and WILL go back. I was sitting in church the next day thinking about those chicken fingers and fries that I had there ! Went to J Alexander's for a little anniversary dinner last week and it was a good experience. I had the veggie burger and my partners had sirloin and pork tenderloin medallions. Steak was cooked perfectly and no complaints on the tenderloin. The fries were awesome as usual and the wait staff beautiful and welcoming. Our food was served lickity-split and we were there way less than an hour. Best veggie burger, ever! I always loved J Alexander's yummy creamy cole slaw, so I ordered a side. When it got to the table, it was very very thinly sliced cabbage (almost like spaghetti in length) and there was not a drop of any kind of moisture or seasoning on or in it. Enjoyed a wonderful Sunday lunch starting out with the avocado bomb appetizer made with fresh Hawaiian Tuna and crab meat enclosed in a fresh avocado...presentation is everything, nicely done! I had the grilled swordfish...excellent. My wife had the Thai BBQ Salmon...very delicious. My daughter eating for three (twin boys to be born later this year) she had the rainbow trout..very good! Lunchtime surprise...found this lovely little gem in Cordova at Wolfchase...Friday...did a late lunch which was wise...not busy...and service was great! This place has the look and feel of a Houston 's - like in E. Memphis and Cali...The fragrance of the wood they cook over drifts outside like a siren in the sea...intoxicating you and making your mouth water even before you walk in... dark and cool ( temp wise ) it felt good inside...good for business convo, catching up with friends or relaxing with a cocktail. Little known fact: They still offer a steak taco special...resembles "street tacos"...light- flour tortilla/ not corn - they serve a set of 3...a healthy lunch portion i thought (BTW...this item IS NOT on their menu) so ask your wait person...also have chicken and shrimp.... theses ARE on the menu! Let me start by saying I usually love this place but unfortunately poor staff and management has led to an hour wait despite a reservation. My husband and I received a pathetic excuse about them being behind on reservations. They allowed several people to be seated way that were walk ins and that is absolutely wrong. read more

I would recommend making a Reservation...This place stay pack but the food is delicious

I haven't been to J Alexanders in awhile and decided to come here with a group of guys to just hang out. Our server was very attentive and made sure everyone got their food and if we needed a refill on our drinks. Majority of us ordered steak and prime rib. My filet was cooked just right (med rare) while my other friends had the ribeye. One had a slightly overcooked ribeye (med well) and was offered an apology and a new steak. Even the manager came to apologize afterwards. Our table was rewarded with some chocolate cake and ice cream for the trouble afterwards. That just hit the spot at the end of our meal and was much appreciated. read more

We were in town for the holidays and haven't been here in years so we remembered we liked it and thought we'd stop in and have a nice dinner. We called to check on the wait and were told 30 mins and that we could be put on call ahead to be seated. We arrived and had to wait another 45 mins. After getting seated we were rushed. We ordered an appetizer because we were starving but our salads came out before it, then our meal arrived after we were done with out Salads so we ate our steak. As we finished our steak our waitress came up and asked to box up our appetizer and we hadn't had any of it, so we were frustrated and annoyed so we said yes. When we got home we found less than half of our cheese dip and no salsa. We were at our table for 35 minutes with a $70+ check for 2. Extremely upset and warning everyone to stay away, try something else and spend your money on a place that respects you and takes good care of you. Firebirds, Rafferty's, just about anywhere else at this price point. Paris our waitress seemed to be in another world, disconnected, and lost. I know they have to turn tables but my goodness!! I will say this, everything we had was really good. The Steak Maui and Side Salad and Queso (which we ate when we got home) was really good. No bread but... the sweet tea was good as well. read more

The lunch crew was on its way for burgers Friday and decided to drop the few extra bucks for one at Alexander's. Three of us ordered the Pierre, Alexander's cutesy name for a burger with grilled onions and Gruyere cheese. The burger didn't disappoint. The grilled onions and gruyere are naturals, having long ago become a couple in French onion soup. (I can't give J. Alex's a big shout-out for creativity, but they deserve one for capitalizing on the obvious.) The burger was cooked to perfection. I asked for mine to be cooked just enough to be safe. Salute to the grillmaster. It was perfect. Alexander's thin-cut potato straw fries come with the burger at no extra charge. The other dude in our lunch crew ordered the Thai Kai salad, which I've had before. But because three of us went carnivorous and only one ordered a (by comparison) healthy choice, we made merciless fun of him the entire meal, including suggesting to the waiter that he put a little paper parasol to plant in the salad, like in a fru-fru cocktail. The J. Alex's burger is--again--a little pricey as burgers go. I've had pricier--Ruth's Chris in KC comes to mind. Still, it was delicious and memorable. read more

We rarely eat here for dinner because the prices are very high. Tonight an old friend invited us out. I had the steak Brazzo and they both had the Scottish salmon. Horrible customer service. They didn't give me a chance to even try their food. Called to make sure they were serving in the dining room as we are traveling through. The answer was yes so I ask for a reservation. She directed me to use the online service which I didn't have the app for and wasn't sure if I could get it downloaded in time. J. Alexanders isn't a very memorable place for me. Aside from their mac and cheese- which is the sole winner of those 3 points above- nothing here is anything short of mediocre. It isn't delicious, yet it also isn't inedible. The food is standard for a chain that leans towards the upscale side. The staff here has always been above average on my visits. I haven't encountered the negativity that most have. I just feel like everything here from the menu to the decor is pretty generic which doesn't reflect on the price point. I can think of a dozen Memphis establishments I would prefer to dine in when paying a price tag like this. Restaurants that are locally owned and have a more diverse menu for that price. The mac and cheese? Yeah- they get a high five for that one. I have no clue what they put in it, but the crusty top and the creamy cheese combo is out of this world ridiculous. Well..... Sadly, Redland's Grill is NOT J. Alexander's for sure. The carpet was wet and stunk. The table had salt spilled on it and got all over our arms. The condiments were not filled up. The restroom had an actual brick of some sort holding up a sink for God's sake. No Toilet paper in my stall. Our server did not know the menu. She never refilled our glasses, hung OVER the booth at the end of our row towards the wine closet to fawn over a regular customer that had sat down. She never removed our plates as we finished. Two of the male servers could not keep their hands out of their hair scratching at their scalps. We noticed that there were menus placed by where the servers rang their food in. Sad. In the olden days, those J servers knew the menu front to back and actually showed pride in their knowledge. Not anymore. I always wonder why a corporation that has a perfect business model, changes the menu. Why mess with what used to be perfection? I miss rolling up a straw wrapper and placing it at the end of our table and having a server pick it up immediately. I miss the salsa with Radishes and cucumbers. I miss the Croissants. I really miss the exemplary service and attention to every single detail. There is no pride with the staff now. None. Not in their service OR appearance. This was always our go to place, and we NEVER minded paying a high price for the perfection that once was. Whomever is the general manager now has really let this place go to an "Applebee's" type of restaurant. Actually, I have had better service at "Applebee's" so I shouldn't use that reference. It is not the elegant perfection it once was. The corporate office should be ashamed and do an intervention with the manager and staff! I feel like I'm grieving. I'm so sad for what that place once was and now is because management obviously doesn't care anymore. Houston's will now be where we take our money. read more

Dinner: 3 stars per Yelp is "A-Ok". $10 for a modest sized salad? Granted it was hard to discern the full size without a miner's hat and light - I certainly felt like we were sitting in a dark cave. A noisy dark cave. The salad tasted fresh and the Maui steak had a great flavor. Too dark to tell if the meat was cooked rare or well done but the slices of fat (that I usually cut off) looked just like the meat so eat bite was a surprise. Gotta bring a flashlight next time.
