Went to J. Alexander today for a birthday luncheon. First off, had great servers for a party of 18. Like that they will do separate checks. Appetizers were all great (shrimp-great and salmon dip) entrees were also great (pecan encrusted trout, ribs and steaks), drinks (all martinis, my fav was Havana), here is the kicker....GNATS!! You all have a really bad issue with GNATS and it was hard to enjoy our food for swatting GNATS the entire time. I read in a previous review that GNATS were an issue. This would be a 5 star restaurant if you all would invest in a bug zapper thingy. Ambiance was great and FREE parking. I can't see myself going back until the GNATS are taken care of. The health department would definitely find this unacceptable. read more

Excellent food, great atmosphere, wonderful staff. I came here with my coworkers while in town for a conference based on Yelp reviews and it did not disappoint! I ordered the seared ahi tuna that came with a very large side of mashed potatoes and whole petite tomatoes; one coworker prefer the prime rib rib with similar sides; and the other coworker ordered the prime rib with a baked potato. We all shared pieces of our main dishes and everything tasted amazing and was cooked to perfection. This restaurant is slowly becoming a favorite. It's very clean and chic w/social distancing measures in place such as the plexiglass at the bar along with hand sanitizer at the hostess station. I also saw the waitress wiping down the plexiglass between customers. To start, the girls enjoyed the Red headed Rita martini & Cindy's Lemon drop / how sweet, the waiter gave them the extra! For starters, the smoked salmon dip is impeccable, but rotates on the menu - you're a lucky diner if you happen to visit in the right day. All the ingredients compliment each other, especially the smokiness of the salmon. The acAvocado Tuna bomb was also a nice starter and well presented and so fresh! Dined here Friday night at 8PM. There were plenty of reservations avail on Resy. The restaurant space is nice. Was not very busy for a Friday night but the atmosphere is clean, brighter than the previous restaurant and service was good. For apps, we ordered the deviled eggs and salmon dip -- both were bland. Have been to Merus many times and have been very pleased. We chose to dine there with our family for our anniversary. Reservations were made days in advance and the anniversary was noted as the special occasion. We were seated in a corner booth in the bar. Some special consideration. When we asked to be seated in the dining room we were told they had other reservations. No accommodation was made. We would have left but could not find another option. We had our normal order and the food was fine but the wait staff in the bar isn't as experienced. The result was a ketchup container was dropped, ketchup splattered all over my slacks, sports coat and my daughters new expensive white shoes. All in all it was a horrible experience. If you make a reservation you had better pick a table in advance. They did comp two deserts but will fall far short of the cleaning bill and damage to the shoes. read more

One of the top restaurants I've been to since we moved to Houston area. Been here 4 times in the last year. The food is always top notch. Awesome service too. We normally order the spinach con queso and calamari for appetizers. The chips are super fresh and with a nice amount of tasty spinach queso dip. The calamari is fried to perfection and a very generous amount. Both super recommended. We have tried the prime rib which is cooked to perfection. Almost as good as Lawry's which I've been too about 10 times. The filet mignon with béarnaise sauce is very delicious as well. I once ordered the bbq ribs because I love ribs. I wasn't expecting them to be as tasty and tender as they were. I totally underestimated it and I was very pleasantly surprised and happy with my selection. Overall 5/5 for sure. Our server this time was Klarissa. I found out it was only her second solo shift ever there. She is super attentive with refills. Always smiling. Pleasant positive attitude and persona that made our awesome meal even better. We hope she is there next time we visit. read more

Simple tasks like filling water and removing empty glasses are neglected. We asked for the dessert menu and he brought us a paper that said see your server! He didn't know that until we told him. Valentine's night. In town for business and had dinner with a vendor. By no means a romantic dinner... however, the service we received at Merus Grill was literally incredible! It was exceptional for a business dinner but If i had been out for a date or intimate evening with a loved one, this would have really and truly exceeded expectations and set the tone. they pulled out all the stops to make sure they left us with a memorable experience. That is what they gave- not only phenomenal food and service but an overall wonderful joyful experience! They earned a true fan tonight. I would have added a little more salt but it was good. I wasn't very hungry so I have the Hong Kong shrimp appetizer for a meal. I really liked the flavor of the sauce. I was first introduced to J Alexanders in San Antonio. When I moved to Houston, I was glad to know there was one here. I have always loved their food and service. A couple years after moving to Houston J Alexanders left Houston. I was so happy when I found out Merus Grill was established under the J Alexander brand, and with many of the same menu items. I am glad the brought it back and such a convenient and trendy area (Uptown Park). My mom and I are able to renew an old tradition. The new establishment did not disappoint. I love the modern look of the restaurant and how open it was. The restaurant is large enough for social distancing. Hand sanitizer was provided when entering and staff were all wearing masks. Patrons are also required to wear masks except when seated at their table. The salmon dip with bruschetta was listed as a feature, so we started with that. I wish they carried this everyday or at least had set days when they would carry. This is one of my favorite appetizers. The smokey salmon and the dill pair nicely. Me and my mom both ordered the Slow Roasted Prime Rib (Aged Mid-Western beef, served au jus). with loaded smashed potatoes and a loaded baked potato. My Mom had the loaded smashed potatoes and I must say I like it better than the baked potato. Both were amazing...but I would go for the smashed potatoes. They also bring a horseradish cream out and it pairs nicely with the prime rib. They give really large servings so you will definitely have leftovers. I will be coming here on a regular. This isn't the first review I have written here. I will start by saying we are regulars here. Once every 7-10 days. I am very comfortable dining here, and the food is generally very good. Service is like anywhere else, sometimes great, sometimes slow. Tonight it was great. Note to the manager: you need to fix the French Dip sandwich. My wife has been complaining about it for months and tonight it was terrible. The meat is dry and overcooked. We even asked for "medium rare" tonight, well, ha, what a joke. This isn't a one time occurrence, we'd rather pay $29 at Hillstone for the sandwich as the meat is pink and tender as opposed to $23 at J Alexander where it is barely edible. Those are our choices every time we decide where to go. read more

I honestly don't understand how on Earth this restaurant has such a high rating. Today was the second time I have given this restaurant a chance and the quality is just bad. The baked potato soup tastes like something is seriously wrong with it. Why does it taste like vinegar? I had the lemon butter caper chicken and the broccoli has no other flavor than pure salt water. The mashed potatoes were poorly flavored. The salad has the worst quality ingredients. The tomatoes were mealy. There isn't enough lettuce and it's low quality lettuce. For this price, why does the food taste like applebees? Really, really low quality food. read more

This is an excellent addition to the once-again-booming Uptown Park! The atmosphere is romantic, on the darker/intimate side, yet bright enough and versatile for business meetings or bringing your children along. This is a J. Alexander establishment, so you can expect about the same quality and service as in Houston's restaurant, which I've always been a fan of. We ordered the fish of the day (grouper), a house salad and cheeseburger with fries. Their burgers are some of the best in the city, and those shoestring fries are perfection--they don't even need ketchup! My fish was cooked well, and came with mashed potatoes and veggies--all very tasty. For dessert, we had the dense chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream, and it was plenty to share amongst 4 people, if not more (we were only 2 adults and a child, and left half)! Service was excellent, everyone who came to our table was friendly. Parking is plentiful and the location can't be beat--will be making this a regular stop! read more

Not a person looking for comps but was surprised nothing was done as a courtesy for the experience and inconvenience. Not a desert or a drink. Too many other places in Houston to lunch.
