What a disappointment of a "fine dining" establishment... We came for a Birthday party dinner and had a a private room booked. It included a 3 course meal with no drinks at all for $180 per person after tax and forced 22% gratuity. I've been known to tip beyond that at times but for 22% you better deliver. Same goes for $180 on a 3 course meal when you have HRW for $55 going on right now and didn't have that option in the private dining rooms. Ordered a bottle of Peju Merlot for $80 ($105 after tax n tip) this was the only good thing I had and I selected it myself, without any sommelier nor help from the "waiters" First course: Lobster chowder. It came cold and under seasoned. We had a party size of 22 people, not one liked it. Second course: Choice of ribeye steak, Mediterranean branzino or fried chicken. I went with the steak. It just flat out wasn't good. Period. Not one single person liked the steak. Multiple ppl got the wrong steaks cooked to the wrong temperature. Mine did come out medium rare as I requested, but it was an amateur level steak. In the hierarchy of Houston Steakhouses, this is bottom tier. Those that had the branzino, didn't like it either. Small little underwhelming portion. The chicken looked great. However, the ones that ordered it said it had chicken nugget consistency inside. Third course: Choice of cobbler (unspecified) or chocolate cake. I went with the cobbler. It ended up being apple, and terrible. It was essentially a big dry biscuit with a few warm apple slices and ice cream on top. It was dry, and 90% breading. The chocolate cake the people got was good. Again, this was $180 per person before adding any drinks. The service which got an auto gratuity of 22% was lackluster, mixed up orders and had ZERO personality. They were equally as bad as the food. Who owns this place? Who runs it? Asking for a friend, so we can avoid all other restaurants you're associated with. This wasn't one "negative" experience that ruined the meal. It was an accumulation of everything falling short. Not only do I not recommend Georgia James, I would highly encourage dining elsewhere. Great service and food, but quite pricey. Despite the price, I still had a fantastic time at Georgia James. The interior is classy and the staff is well trained. My boyfriend made a reservation here for our anniversary, made a note of it in the reservation, and the staff confirmed that we were celebrating an anniversary upon arrival. I love it when restaurants actually read notes attached to reservations. It doesn't take that much effort, but it makes a world of a difference for the customer experience. We were seated in the corner of a room which we appreciated for a quieter/slightly more private dining experience. Our server was attentive and helped point out some menu highlights. We started off with a small, complimentary bread basket. Great, herby butter and soft bread. We got the pork belly for our appetizer and it was wonderful - there's a crust on it and the flavors are rich and tangy. We split the 14oz ribeye which was a good move because we didn't even finish it. Between the steak and the sides, and with how rich everything is, we still had an entire portion left. The steak came out perfectly cooked to medium rare, tender, and with that signature crust on it again. Brussels were pretty straightforward/predictable, but still good. I was a bit underwhelmed by the truffle mac n cheese. I think ultimately it was a bit lacking in truffle flavor, but it was very cheesy which I appreciated. It's a massive development they occupy in a quickly expanding area of river oaks. The space is very elegant and feels like you would expect for a more contemporary American steakhouse. Service was cordial and present. Not over the top or chatty, and helped make suggestions. I tend to look for table service that elevates an experience when spending big at a steakhouse though. The food here was just all over the place unfortunately. The appetizers were part of the meal that feel flat for me. The Viet Cajun oysters were served shucked and submerged in butter. So much so that when I took a bite my body reacted in surprise, I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but they were overly salted/seasoned is my feel. The Korean pork belly was just plain over cooked, a textural nightmare as the meat was a couple of seconds away from jerky. If that was the point or not I can't say, but usually pork belly dishes are fatty and melty when you eat it. We had a bang bang shrimp type dish that was a par for the course experience, the fried cauliflower paired with it was a bit more interesting the the shrimp in my opinion. For the meal proper, we order a suggested Tomahawk cooked medium rare (+) with some potatoes. The potatoes were excellent, tossed in a bright and herby green sauce, we enjoyed those a lot. The steak took quite a while to get to us. We came for a Friday lunch service that wasn't quite halfway full, and after the initial rush of lunch goers had gotten their food by the time we ordered. The time we ended up waiting felt too long by half and the steak wasn't cooked to order by the time they were cutting it in front of us. It makes me wonder if it took so long, why wasn't it cooked more thoroughly. It came out perhaps a touch above rare, it was definitely an issue for the others at our table. We didn't send back since we had waited longer than necessary at that point, and the whole flambé show prior would have made it feel silly. My feeling is that under different circumstances, maybe at dinner or with a different approach ordering it would've been much better, but for my visit this is what I feel. Georgia James is a lovely steakhouse that I will probably never revisit. If you're looking for the best steak in Houston, this place does not have it. What they do have is some incredible non-steak dishes, highly attentive staff, and a sleek yet cozy ambience. Let's break down my order: The Viet Cajun Roasted Oysters (5/5): If you're a Houston native, you will just "get it". The oysters are served piping hot, swimming in little vats of garlicky Viet Cajun butter. The sauce was so good, I asked our server to box it up to go. Caesar Salad (2/5): Realistically, a good Caesar is not hard to achieve. The romaine was cut a bit small and not all that fresh or crisp. The dressing tasted like it came from a bottle. The croutons were small and difficult to pick up with a fork. I only gave an extra star because they topped the Caesar with a couple marinated anchovies, which are much more tender and fresh compared to the traditional salt-cured version. Ribeye (3/5): My steak came out with whole garlic and thyme on top, almost as if Gordon Ramsey had butter basted it himself. Initially, the smell gave me an incredible high. But the intoxication quickly faded after I took the first bite. The steak was nothing special. Technically, everything was correct -- decent crust, warm pink center, properly cooked. But it lacked a "wow" factor. The steak smelled exponentially better than it tasted. Pappas and Steak 48 have Georgia James beat by a mile. Smashed & Fried New Potatoes (1/5): First off, calling them "smashed" is a stretch. My potatoes were all completely in tact, dare I say, whole. Lightly pressed potatoes might be a better description. And never in my wildest dreams did I think the potatoes would come out in a mildly sweet sauce. I could only stomach one potato. Brown butter mushrooms (0/5): They're sliced white button mushrooms sautéed in butter and thyme and barely any seasoning... even a novice cook could make a better mushroom side dish. Charging $17 for this mediocre side should be a crime. Want an incredible brown butter mushroom dish? Run to Kira and try their Maitaki hand roll. Blackened Scallops (5/5): Incredible seafood dish. The scallops were perfectly executed, and the creamy Cajun orzo sent me into a frenzy. Honey Goat Cheese Panna Cotta (5/5): This dessert blew me away. The panna cotta was creamy and light, and I could definitely taste the honey and goat cheese. The red wine poached pear gave the perfect contrast of tartness. I will dream of this dessert for a long time. If you told me that Georgia James was a seafood-forward restaurant with steak options, I'd have given them 5 stars. Located in Houston's newer Regent Square area near River Oaks. For parking, valet is available and there is also a parking garage nearby. To start the evening off I ordered a Gin Martin. I went with their signature GJ Martini #1. I typically go for a regular extra dirty martini but this had a different spin. It had Citrus flavored gin, Blanc vermouth, Quin quina Blanc, and bitters. The drink tasted great, just a little too sweet for my liking since traditional martinis are not sweet at all. For dinner we weren't terribly hungry so we skipped the sharables and went straight to the main course. I ordered the filet mignon, cooked medium with Béarnaise sauce. The filet was cooked to my liking (don't be fooled by the photo, I know it looks charred lol) and the Béarnaise sauce was exactly what I wanted. Also ordered a side of sautéed broccolini that was seasoned perfectly, not too salty or peppery. To end the evening I ordered a dessert cocktail. I already had it in mind to see if they could make me a Brandy Alexander, many places either do not know how to make one or do not have all the ingredients needed for it. The new area adjacent to River Oaks is very upscale and clean, which is a plus. Unfortunately, the execution and quality of the food took a slight nosedive from a few years ago in their old spot. The Caesar salad was a bit forgettable; 3.5/5. Their gulf oysters were straight up not good; very salty and engulfed in a butter bath, 1/5. The hearth roasted pork belly was a bit burnt and tough, 2/5. We split an off the menu tomahawk for our table; the cook was requested as a medium rare plus and came out just south of rare. I found it a bit inedible due to how raw the cook was. Not a fan, and not a good cook of a nice cut. Arrived here for a dinner date. The place wasn't crowded but we decided to sit outside because it's a nice day. For starters I ordered the East Coast oysters which were so fresh and delicious! The espresso martinis were delicious as well. Our server was a young girl. I forgot her name, but she was very attentive. For dinner, we ordered a New York strip to be split Brussel sprouts and the truffle mac & cheese. That typically always order a fillet so the New York trip wasn't really that good to me. I don't like a lot of fat on my steak, but it was good nonetheless than the presentation was excellent now onto the sides. I absolutely loved the brussels sprouts they were so delicious. I wanted to run into the back and ask the chef what his recipe was and the mac & cheese was delicious as well. I was so full that we had to have doggy bags. I would definitely come here again. I found this place to be standard for a steakhouse. The service is at the level you would expect for the price point, professional and accommodating. For appetizers we had the Caesar salad, which was ok but I couldn't taste or see the boquerones that they indicated were there. That was disappointing because I always hope that steakhouses will serve a "real Caesar salad" which must have fish. But they're probably catering to the masses who don't tend to prefer this. We also had the popcorn shrimp and we did like that quite a bit. FYI the shrimp are not crispy, moreso saucy. As for the entrees, I don't really eat steak so unfortunately I cannot comment on that, but my husband indicated that he enjoyed his. I ordered the king crab legs, which had a lot of good seasoning and quite tasty, but I'm not sure it was worth the $110 market price for 1/2 pound. Especially since I can get similar for much less at a crawfish spot. That's my fault for not asking what the MKT price was though. lol. We had the Brussel spouts (just ok) and the smashed and fried potatoes (better than ok) for sides. The service was great. A pet pee e of mine is sitting with an empty glass for long periods of time. We never had to worry about this. The drinks were good. My fiancee enjoyed the el mercado. I had an old fashioned as usual which was pretty good. The only knock is, it said tallow old fashioned, but it didn't taste any different than a normal old fashioned from wherever. However, not necessarily anything to bring down a star rating. The braised beef ravioli was good, the pork belly was good, fried chicken was solid, but the rissoto was the star of the show. I would keep coming back just to eat these. Our steak was so delicious. It was cooked perfectly and we love the table side service. Upon first glance, it's easy to fall in love with a place like Georgia James. A high end steakhouse with a gorgeous interior, it is a symbol of the premium demands of the neighborhood and the ultimate date night spot. I've enjoyed the food here over several visits and have generally enjoyed my experiences. The interior is sophisticated and modern with the kind of vibe dining feels that has become synonymous with the Houston dining scene. The layout of is somewhat unique and the lighting fixtures and contemporary furniture pieces make this place an aesthetic gem alone. The venue itself is deceivingly large, complete with a second floor area that has semi-doubled as a roof / outdoor dining destination. It is an impressive space to say the least. Unlike the usual vibe dining spots, the food does match the ambiance with with a menu of indulgence. The excellent presentation and variety really make this more of a upscale American establishment than a pure steakhouse. Meat quality was top notch in my experience and I did enjoy their perfectly cooked and well seasoned wagyu steaks, The ribeye was nice and fatty with lots of juices emanating from the medium rare meat. For serious carnivores, I would recommend the big baller board, which is an off-menu item of which is a group sharing platter of chef-selected meats. (#1) A lot of the appetizers have been a tinge underwhelming and I don't love the current selection of the bone marrow, gulf oysters in Viet-Cajun butter, the pork belly, or the popcorn shrimp. For sub-$30 dishes they rank very low on the appeal totem pole. I still miss the chicken liver pate and pork rillette. Some of the raw bar items such as their marinated carb fingers and smoked redfish dip gets a thumbs up. Big spenders can go for the seafood tower, which really is a mecca of food porn. Service has been a bit of a mix of good and bad. The quips I've gotten for asking questions about the constantly evolving menu and courteous welcomes upon arrival is sometimes a head scratcher. It can be best summed up as professional 'tude. I recommend reservations for dinner, but walk-ins are best reserved for the bar and roof setup upstairs. I kept the reservation since it was for my boyfriend's birthday, but the menu itself didn't offer much that stood out. My boyfriend ordered the salmon with asparagus, and I had the short ribs with polenta and Brussels sprouts. The salmon was plain and the asparagus tasted watered down. My short ribs were fatty and lacking in flavor, though I will say the Brussels sprouts were good. To top it off, my server accidentally threw away my leftovers instead of boxing them. She did try to make it right by letting me order another side to go, and I received the lobster mac & cheese. While it was fine, it didn't make up for the overall disappointing experience. Let me start by saying my girlfriend and I used to come here often and always had great experiences. We recently moved back to Houston after two years and were excited to return, especially because we remembered the wedge salad being one of our favorites. If I recall correctly, it used to feature fresh dill, house-made blue cheese dressing, and homemade croutons. Unfortunately, this visit was very different. The wedge came out with candied pecans and pickled onions, no dill, subpar dressing, and lettuce that did not taste fresh. Personally, I would never pair pickled onions and candied pecans on a wedge, but I will take responsibility for not reading the description carefully and assuming those elements wouldn't be included. The description also mentioned pork belly bites, which were not included. The steak tartare was also disappointing. We both genuinely love steak tartare, but this was clumpy, poorly textured, and not what we expected -- especially for a tableside presentation at that price point. Because of this, we didn't feel confident ordering the ribeye or any additional sides we had planned on getting. For two wedge salads and a steak tartare, our bill was already at $100 -- before the additional $26 for parking. For that price point, the quality simply did not align with expectations. Every experience I've had at Georgia James is 10/10. This is my first happy hour experience and the Gin Martini with a twist was amazing as usual. My bartender did a wonderful job. My husband and I are in town for my cancer treatment and we celebrated my remission and end of chemo with an incredible dinner here. I wish I could remember our waiter's name who was so kind to us as we celebrated! Service was wonderful and the ambiance was very classy, I especially loved their monogrammed ice cubes in my drink. We had the baked brie, I had a Caesar salad which was one of the best I've had in a while, and I had the filet while my husband had the ribeye. The cook was perfect and I added a lobster tail to mine as well. Our sides of the truffle mac and cheese and the sautéed asparagus really set the tone and we even had THREE desserts! Found a new favorite. We had a late 10pm reservation so it felt like we had the restaurant to ourselves. It was a beautiful place with nice low lighting. Good for a romantic dinner (especially when you go late and have the place to yourself). We were first greeted with an open door and a smile. We sat and our server Bernice welcomed us in for our first time and told my husband happy birthday. She walked us through the menu with thorough explanations. I will be requesting her next visit. We chose two of her recommendations for apps. Cajun baked oysters and wagyu carpaccio. Just be careful eating the oysters. They are temperature HOT and we did get a tiny piece of shell. It's hard to pick out with everything in the sauce. But they tasted good. Next time I would order the carpaccio "deconstructed" so I could choose what to put on each bite I really wanted to try it by itself. It was melt in your mouth goodness. Drinks were very good and so was the bread and butter. Just don't get too full! Dinner was absolutely delicious! I have never eaten such delicate, melt in your mouth delicious salmon! I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here. The ambiance was cozy, nice, and the service was so wonderfully attentive and warm. The menu was explained well. Our server said they didn't have flounder on the HRW menu so it was substituted with a drum like fish equivalent. The manager stopped by to explain that they had a wine pairing with the HRW menu. We were served sourdough from three man bakery and a warm seasoned beef tallow - interesting take. I opted for the smoked redfish dip, flounder with fried okra and chocolate cake. I've never seen a smoked redfish dip before, it was so good. Slightly smokey paired well with the saltine crackers. We ran out if cracker so I tried it with the complimentary sour dough bread, still good. My friend had the slab salad, delicious. The creamy dressing, bacon bits, blue cheese, wonderful. My fish was wonderfully cooked. The rice grits were creamy and I loved the texture contrast with the crispy fried okra. The cake was divine. It was moist and not too sweet. I went to Georgia James to celebrate my birthday and I was blown away by their food! We had the following: -Gulf Coast Oysters - great oysters and honestly the cleanest I've ever seen -GJ Charcuterie - very good selection of meats & cheeses -Crab Cake - very tasty and big in size -Filet - the best Filet I've had in a very long time, the crust on that filet was soooo amazing -Ribeye - My husband said this is the best Ribeye he's had in years. Again the crust on the steak is so good! -Truffle Mac & Cheese - this was hands down my favorite! The sauce is amazing and the truffle chunks are to die for! -Lobster Mac & Cheese - if you like Lobster, this Mac & Cheese is for you. I went to Georgia James for my birthday on a Sunday and I really enjoyed it. The bar had happy hour so my friends and I sat there and had a few flavors of lemon drops, which were very delicious and the bartender very sweet. The food was very good and the waiter was very thorough describing the different steak options and giving us his opinion. I can't remember what steak I chose but it was a great recommendation with little to no fat, the potatoes were very good, Brussel sprouts very tasteful, crawfish Mac n cheese, no flavor. Unseen at this restaurant You aren't important enough to eat here. Go to Steak48, Vic and Anthony's, Brennen's instead ....GJ should be embarrassed. We had a hot shrimp app. There were several apologies about how long it took to arrive to the table. But we didn't notice or care. It was delicious. Immediately finishing the shrimp our main dishes arrived. My steak was cold. So cold the garlic butter didn't begin to melt. (I have pictures.) I mentioned it and they heated it for me. Sort of. Sides were okay. Their steakhouse helper was good. Au gratin potatoes good. And grilled corn was also good. But all sides were cold. It was weird. We've never had an experience like this. (We were charged for one item that we didn't receive but when the bill arrived, at that point, we didn't care. We were already thoroughly insulted by the service. Or lack of. Drinks were amazing. Service. It's the most bizarre thing we've ever experienced at any business. We aren't important people. I'm an attorney (pros sex offenders of minors) and hubby is an ED physician. To be properly served, apparently you have to be a famous artist or football player. Or let them know you're important. Bc we were ignored bc those were 2 neighboring tables. Twice, I asked the server for small things. Both times, the important people interrupted and the server gave attention to them, instead and immediately their requests were met. While our requests were delayed. We weren't as important. As I was leaving, I returned a blanket the hostess let me use bc it was chilly in the restaurant and the table next to us asked for it. They told us they also had to return cold food. They weren't famous or important either. It was weird. We've never experienced or witnessed anything like it. We are very unassuming and low key. Georgia James lives up to the hype! We've been meaning to try this place for years, but finally used HRW as our excuse to make it over here. Attentive service and a beautiful restaurant, we'd come back for another special occasion for sure. For HRW dinner 2023, we tried everything, but my favorites were their smoked redfish dip, comeback slathered chicken breast, and chocolate cake. What surprised us the most though was their bread service. What we thought was just a candle to set the mood, was actually a dish of warm wagyu beef tallow to dip their homemade sourdough bread in. Perfection. The redfish dip was super fresh and lemony tasting with just the right amount of smoke. While I expected the hangar steak to be the best entree, the comeback slathered chicken breast was TASTY! That sauce was so addicting, you could put it on anything and it'd taste great. Last, but not least the chocolate cake. Super rich, moist, and tons of chocolate flavor. 10/10 would recommend Georgia James! What put Georgia James over the top for me though was their bartender. I forget his name, but he made a perfect "Last Word" cocktail. I was looking for something gin based and refreshing. He said say less, whipped out the green Chartreuse (which I can't find anywhere to buy for my home bar bc it's sold out), and executed a perfect prohibition era cocktail. New favorite alert!!! Good food here and the ambiance is great. We visited in a Saturday night and were seated upstairs where they had a lovely band. The food was absolutely delicious! We had a ribeye with a lobster tail accompaniment and salmon but the star of the night was the oyster appetizer. Omg! Buttery. Garlicky. Spicy. Goodness!! I highly recommend this place; as specially on a night with good weather. They do have rooftop/patio seating and we also went out to enjoy the night air after we finished our meal. Another great HRW dining experience with good food and excellent service. The hostesses and our server were super nice and very attentive. If you haven't caught on to me yet, I'm taking advantage of all the pricey restaurants for HRW and places I've never tried before. I ordered the Heat Wave cocktail (I love a good strong and fruity drink). We also got a bottle of Riesling for the table. They brought out some sour dough bread and a "dip". It looked like melted butter at first with a candle in middle but it's actually a melted (animal) fat. So that was interesting. For starters I had the smoked redfish dip with crackers. And oh my, I could eat a whole tub of that dip! That might be the best dip spread I've ever had. For entree I went with the Flounder Courtbouillon. I know you're going to ask why I didn't get a steak at a steak house? I didn't want to pay an upcharge to order it off the HRW menu and the fish description sounded good. The fish had a good crust and I liked the sauce on top. The rice grits do have a different texture, similar to polenta. I ordered a side of Brussels and the glaze on those was yummy! For dessert I tried the banana pudding. Now normally I'm not a huge banana pudding fan but the vanilla rum cake caught my eye. I was disappointed that it was a very thin layer of the cake and you could not taste the rum. I definitely wanted more of the rum cake than the pudding. This restaurant was on my list to try. And a friend's daughter was having her birthday celebration here. So perfect timing for me I went with their Houston restaurant week menu. My first course was the crispy shrimp delicious they had a bang bang sauce flavor. Second course was Braised short rib with mashed potatoes the meat was so delicious and tender. The last course was key lime tart. This was good but a little too tart for me. I also did wine pairing with each course.
