Had a great lunch here! I love pretty much everything I've ever tried on their menu. Today I had the cypress salad and tasted the veggie burger. I loved the salad and the croutons are to die for! The veggie burger was a but too authentic for me. I think I was expecting something more like a black bean burger. However, it was good but not something I'll order again. If you have not had the carrot cake you must stop what you are doing and go NOW! I was not able to enjoy it today since I'm working on my fitness, but please enjoy it for me. The drinks and happy hour is great but the service is very poor. I went in for a few drinks for happy hour while still in gym shorts and tennis, given my attire I was not given the right service. I had to ask for my check, was never asked how my drink or food was, and was not told thank you, have a nice night when leaving. I went here for lunch with my co-worker's to celebrate my birthday. We were a larger group - 8 of us - and the server accommodated us with ease. The food was incredible - definitely try the crab cakes and warm, homemade carrot cake for dessert. We ate here recently & were very unimpressed with the food. Portion sizes are too small considering their cost. The presentation of the dishes is uninspired as well. I had one of their burgers which was not particularly flavorful & my wife had a salad. While we were waiting for our food to arrive, a different waiter walked by with a lunch order for a table close to us. The salmon smelled rotten! It was so pungent that it made us both grimace simultaneously as it passed by our table. The restaurant's quality control needs to be looked at. The service was pleasant & friendly & the decor is nice. I think the menu is 20% overpriced considering the portion sizes & very average quality. Cheesecake Factory is far superior & amazingly consistent. As another reviewer pointed out, we were ignored by the two young hostesses as we left, who were too involved in chatter to say "thank you". First time here and the entire experience was at the top of the scale. It was my mother's 85th birthday and we made reservations during Sunday brunch and were seated immediately. The atmosphere is high end yet not stuffy. The choices are varied and many during brunch since they have a separate brunch menu and you can also order from the regular menu and specials. Our waiter was attentive but not overbearing. He answered our questions with full sentences not yes or no. My daughter asked to substitute park of her meal and it was done with no additional costs. Our orders were placed and we received our meals without delay and everything not only looked good, but it tasted even better. Zero complaints from anyone and we finished very satisfied. Though a little more expensive than your normal chain restaurant, it is not overpriced for the quality of food and ambience. The total for us, five adults, was under $100. We had another amazing meal tonight at J. Alexander's. I'm always impressed with the delicious food, great service, and hip atmosphere at this restaurant. My wife was raving about her steak sandwich, which looked mouth watering. I was extremely happy with my Bronzino and couscous. It was perfectly prepared. Our server, Haley, was friendly and attentive. Even on a busy Saturday night the manager, Avery, stopped by twice to check on us. There is an attention to detail that makes this restaurant top notch. As a meet fanatic i have very high standards for my meat. Specially when I pay over 30$ for a stake that doesn't even come with a salad. So I return my stake twice (first time it's ever happened to me) for bin under cooking. A classic sign of time crunch and pressing of the steak. I held my hand and didn't mention this, date and all. Not a bad spot, and I will go again when not busy to give them another shot. Advice would be to avoid times they are too busy. They have some underskilled folks on the food and service side. Not worth a Friday or Saturday spectacular date. We have gone to Redlands / J Austin's for years for the families Birthdays and Anniversaries but after this past time we will be finding somewhere else to go. There are very few restaurants that remember that it is the service AND quality of food. My wife, whose birthday it was and the reason why we all went there got the Bayou pasta and wow what a difference, 2 medium shrimp and no pieces of crab but plenty of pulverized crab. Lots and lots of peppers but worth 20.00 no. Oh and then we come to my sons and mine Prime rib. We have both told people, and I mean a lot of people, about this meal. I can honestly say that I have been to your establishment at least 10 times over the years and have NEVER been disappointed.... until this past Sunday. First off this used to be a choice of 2 sizes well that is now gone. So for 36.00 you get an unknown size, my guess is about 10 ounces but this also includes a bone and about 2 ounces, at least, of bad fat, which I have never had before. My son's was about the same. My daughters and my son's girlfriend was very good. My daughters boyfriends New York strip was horrible and it was 40.00. More than half of this piece of steak was returned because of fat and gristle. I had a 15.00 dollar drink and it was good except I really liked the smoked one you used to have. My daughters boyfriend ordered a 40 to 50 dollar bottle of champagne and it was lack luster. I'm sorry for this review but I hope you take this and re-evaluate your choices of what you have done to the quality of the food you put out. One last thing, servers are very important and let me just say, you were not busy at 5:30 PM on a Sunday so me having to go up to the greeters to ask to have them find our server so we could get steak sauce, salt and pepper was very disappointing. So this was a 6 person reservation and the total was for about 240.00 but unfortunately 4 out of 6 people were not satisfied. read more

Friendly, professional staff who guided us to the bar (at our request) where we enjoyed our beverages and enjoyed the ambience. Engaging bartenders livened the room, and when our table was ready we were seated in a booth. Our server/waiter was also engaging and very knowledgeable about the menu, specials, favorites, etc. Our meals arrived and were served in what seemed like very short order. The food was just as described in the menu (and by our server), and was excellent. I'm only sorry that we didn't have room (or the nerve) to try some of what appeared to be terrific desserts. While the food at J Alexander Redlands is as can be expected, quite good, that we found other food objects in our mayonnaise not once but twice really says a little bit for the level of care the kitchen staff is taking in prepping the food. If this is happening, what else is.? Since one of our party also had serious egg allergies this is clearly unacceptable. While we eventyally had an apology from the manager, after them observing me writing a yelp review, I'm not sure this would've happened otherwise. We were literally about to pay our bill and walk out when he came by. Our waitress also seemed to not care about us, and really didn't exhibit the excellence that I am used to from J Alexanders. Mediocre. I came early on a Saturday, by myself and sat at the bar for dinner. There were 5 waitstaff back and forth behind the bar vs ten bar patrons. The service was slow.. I had to ask to order, ask for another drink, ask for the desert menu, ask for my check. I would completely understand of it were a busy Saturday night at 7:30 but that was not the case. The food was fine chicken and mashed potatoes, potatoes were cold but it wasn't worth the hassle to send back. I paid for everything immediately which should be a sign that I don't plan to hang out at the bar wasting time. The lemon drop was fine, nothing special for $13. It took over 30 minutes to get my side salad and an additional 10 for my Mac and cheese. The man sitting next to me ordered a hamburger after I did, received it and had finished eating all before I received my salad. Have been to J Alexanders so many times in the past and noted things have been deteriorating for sometime. Today may well be our last visit. Service was the worst food came out undercooked twice. Finally asked for our check paid and tipped well of course and left. You would think a server may ask why you have touched your Medium Well Burger which was raw second time around. Zero stars for this place for being a jerk. I had too much to drink and left my car at their parking lot instead of driving home. Called them the following morning letting them know, and asking if it would be OK to leave it there till I could get a ride there until later in the day. The manager I spoke to stated giving me griff about how he wasn't going to have it towed BUT I am taking up one of their prime parking spots. As many ppl get in car wrecks for drinking and driving he should have been thanking me for not driving. His attitude was so bad, I didn't wait for a ride, took a uber car there and picked up my car. Jays is a great place. Service and food is 5 stars, but the atmosphere outside can suck. Bzak landscape had the 2 handicapped places blocked at 11:15 Am . Then at 12:05pm the leaf blower came on while we had lunch outside. This isn't the first time for this condition. A lot of places don't take deliveries at lunch. The GOOD: I went here for a celebratory date with the bf. Seemed like a nice place from the outside & loved how intimate it felt. The chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and hot fudge was to die for. Just make sure you're sharing or come hungry & only for dessert. The BAD: The food was not good. I got the filet & he had the NY strip -- both cooked medium. Mine was charred on the outside & barely cooked on the inside. His was charred throughout. I sent mine back & it came out more like medium well. We both ordered Cabernet, which was served cold. I may not be a wine connoisseur, but I know that red wine is served at room temperature. If I ever go back it'll be for the dessert. I'd rather spend my money on a good steak elsewhere. read more

I've been to this restaurant a few times in the past - the food is always good and the service has always been fine, but nothing to write home about. My boyfriend and I went back again recently for an early birthday dinner with our families - we had a party of nine and went in on a weeknight when the restaurant was busy, but not packed. I don't know if our waiter was new, or what, but he seemed frazzled and didn't really have it together. He provided water for half the table, and seemed in no rush to stop by and check on us throughout the meal - he was just incredibly inattentive. My stepfather ordered a glass of wine, but it hadn't arrived after about ten minutes. Finally, the waiter came over and said they *might* be out of it. Another employee - I think she may have been a manager - came over and explained that they paid for the case of wine, but the distributor hadn't actually delivered it. I understand wanting to be upfront with your customers, but it was a tad unprofessional. My stepfather picked out another glass of wine - which I think really should have been comped, but wasn't. At the end of the meal, my boyfriend had to order coffee twice - the waiter brought out coffee for everyone except for him, and the waiter acted like he hadn't ordered it in the first place. Don't get me wrong - the food was good. I had a Caesar salad, ahi tuna steak and mashed potatoes that were all delicious. The bad service just ruined it. In all honesty, it felt like the waiter knew he was guaranteed an 18% tip (since we were such a large party), so he didn't feel like he needed to make an effort.
