I have been a great fan of Jeff Ruby's restaurants for decades, beginning with the Precinct in 1985, and have had great food and impeccable service. However, on my most recent visit to the Steakhouse in downtown Cincinnati, I had a different experience with the food. While the service was warm and friendly, I experienced a situation with my meal. I ordered the Filet Scampi (6oz filet, garlic herb shrimp, potato gnocchi). I asked for my filet to be medium with very little pink. It arrived rare, with deep red in the center and without a garnish as if someone had whisked it out way before it's time. Our server quickly took it back to the kitchen and returned with a garnished plate. Unfortunately, the steak this time was well done and tough. This was such a disappointment, as I had dined at this location previously and had wonderful experiences. Previously, the filet cut like butter and was perfect. On this visit, it was undercooked and without garnish (see photos), and then overcooked but arrived topped with garnish. I really couldn't eat it. Thankfully, the shrimp were in great shape. Again, the server stepped in and offered to make it right. At this point, my dinner companions were done with their meal, so she offered to give me a filet to take home, which I gratefully accepted. I began the meal with a fabulous blue crab bisque and classic Caesar salad that were both wonderful. Note that the bisque is quite filling on its own. Our server provided a wonderful table-side prepared Bananas Foster dessert for the birthday celebration, which totally made the evening a success. I was unable to seated as a walk in Saturday night 8/1/2026. Called for a reservation for 1 on Sunday 8/2/3026 they told me nothing until 9:45 PM so I reserved for 2 on Open Table for 7:30 PM, woo hoo My server appeared to be interested in maximizing my check. First I ordered an Old Fashion. While I didn't explicitly name the Old Fashion on the cocktail menu I received the drink with many ice cubes. When I questioned she said that since I didn't order the one of the menu they use scooped ice, The true disappointment came when my drink was priced above the one on the menu. I ordered. While enjoying my crab bisque which was delightful I heard the bar tender share the special of the evening which included a salad, a 6oz. filet, petite lobster tail, mashed potatoes and asparagus, I subsequently asked about the special and canceled my original entree which was $28 more, no salad and no potatoes. Jeff Ruby's had great service, really made me feel taken care of. The hosts and waiters are well dressed and attentive. We shared these dishes between 2 and had more to take for home as we were full. Our faves were the Ruby roll, and the Australian ribcap wagyu. Love the variety in the menu. They served us truffle butter and regular butter with our bread baked fresh from a local bakery. We have business dinners at Rubys often and they never disappoint. We love to start with old fashions at the piano bar before sitting down for our reservation. We start with the meatball and shrimp cocktail and my favorite, salted sourdough. The barrel cut filet mignon 12 oz it's cooked to perfection and tastes amazing with blue cheese sauce. The new hash brown side was super unique and flavorful. We ended with some dessert and the peanut butter pie was a table favorite. This was our first time dining at Jeff Ruby's steakhouse. I want something very upscale lovely surroundings and of course delicious food. Jeff Ruby's did not disappoint our service provided by Hunter and Charlie was outstanding. We shared that we were celebrating a special occasion, our son's graduation and they went above and beyond to ensure that he felt special everything from the flavorful Tokyo slaw, the raw oysters with all the accoutrements, the steaks that were grilled to perfection, the delectable Chilean Seabass, the Potatoes Anna layered with clarified butter, and the ever so spicy Shishito peppers was amazing! We stayed there for about two hours just getting through the courses, but Charlie and Hunter did not rush us at all. The Liberace-like pianist was the entertaining. Rude hostesses and bar manager. I didn't end up dining here. I was dining solo and therefore I was unable to make a reservation on OpenTable. They don't take solo diners. They also treat you disrespectfully if you dare show up and have the audacity to think you would like to eat there. With quality beverage offerings, my check for dinner usually exceeds a standard couples check. These people are really missing the mark here. 5 star restaurant, as should be expected. Jeff Ruby's steakhouses set the bar, and everyone else tries to keep up. We were celebrating a friend in town for our recent visit. Everything was amazing as it always is (though one person at the table didn't love their Freddie salad). On our waiter's recommendation, I tried the 10oz Australian Wagyu Ribeye cap steak. I don't normally even look at the section of the menu that has $125 steaks, but it was a special night and I was in the mood to try something new. Holy cow (maybe literally) this steak is good. I can't believe how amazing this cut is, perfectly seasoned and cooked. I absolutely loved it. I think we had a bunch of other stuff, but seriously, that steak is a life-changing dish. I've eaten at many steakhouses/chophouses across the country over the years, but this one has a different approach to everything they do compared to the others. Don't get this place confused with the national chains, like Ruth's Chris, Morton's, or even Eddie V's & Capital Grill (those two are favs of mine). Rather Jeff Ruby has a unique approach to not only the décor, but the menu, and amazing quality/prep of their food. They have the standard items - various prime steaks, seafoods, etc... But their preparation was incredibly fresh and tasty! The 8oz filet I got was perfectly prepared and so very good! All the sides were incredible, my favorite was creamed spinach. For appetizers, their huge Wagyu meatball was incredible! The sauce was so very good and smokey and the texture of the meat itself was soft and tender. Save room for dessert as they also have in-house pastry chef's making incredibly unique "Air Jordan" and Rolex cakes! Listen, I've eaten some good meals in my life, but whatever the hell happened inside Jeff Ruby's Speakeasy that Friday night was basically a religious experience with cocktails. Our crew of 8 rolled in for our annual baseball trip -- we clean up just enough to pass for "gentlemen," but let's be honest, we're a traveling pack of loudmouths who argue about who should've bunted in the 7th inning of a 2003 Tigers game. Somehow, they still gave us a private room. Bold move, Jeff Ruby's. The place looks like Sinatra and Elvis opened a casino in Heaven. Gold trim, velvet everywhere, and chandeliers that probably cost more than my car. They even customized the menus with the Cincinnati Reds logo -- so of course, we felt like VIPs who just signed multi-million dollar contracts. And I've got to give a huge shoutout to Maggie Rixson, who set the whole thing up for us. Maggie is an absolute rockstar -- made sure our group was taken care of from start to finish, and somehow made us look more sophisticated than we actually are. She's the kind of person who could organize a dinner for the Rolling Stones and still remember your drink order. The food? Unreal. The steaks were so tender I considered proposing. The mac and cheese might have violated several laws of physics. Every side dish slapped harder than a Reds fastball, and by dessert -- a chilled Reds cake masterpiece -- we were ready to sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" in harmony. The staff? Absolute legends. They were everywhere -- like stealth ninjas with wine bottles, making sure no glass ever saw the bottom. I swear at one point they refilled my bourbon telepathically. And I've got to give credit where it's due -- the one and only, Jamie D, highly recommended Jeff Ruby's, and she was absolutely right. This place isn't just dinner; it's an event. When the night ended, we didn't just leave full. We left changed. I'm pretty sure one guy in our group achieved enlightenment somewhere between the filet and the crème brûlée. Five stars. Holy smokes!!! This place was incredible! We stopped in for pre dinner drinks and just soaked in the ambiance! Just gorgeous! We were lucky to get a spot at the bar, as a party was just leaving. After hearing so many Cincinnati locals rave about how fantastic Jeff Ruby's is, I left feeling disappointed and not that impressed. I visited to celebrate some birthdays with family. We were seated in a separate room, which made it much easier to talk. I was not pleased with the service. When our waiter brought out the drinks, he gave the wrong drinks to the wrong people. This pattern continued throughout the entire meal. In my opinion, if you are paying as much money as we did for a meal, the waiter should be able to bring the correct food to the right person and not continually be dropping off incorrect food to wrong parts of the table. Due to our large group size, we had a wide variety of side dishes, and they were tasty, which is the only reason this review isn't a one star. When the meal was finished almost all of the sides still had food left. They came to clear the table and didn't ask us if anyone wanted it boxed up and threw all of it away. When it was time to pay our bill, they brought one check to my sister-in-law. I understand when it is a large group one person probably typically pays. But they didn't confirm this with us and then separating the checks was very difficult. Almost everyone's check was incorrect. My husband's drink was on our sister's check so we told her that we would Venmo her. When the waitress came back with the corrected checks, she had comped almost everybody's drinks for the confusion, but said to us, "I heard you were Venmoing her for the drink so I left it." At this point I was overly frustrated and ready to go home. We have so many fabulous steak restaurants in our city that in the future, I will not be choosing Jeff Ruby's. read more

If you're planning a trip to Cincinnati, please treat yourself to Jeff Ruby's! Reserve early, they were booked online a couple of months in advance. I called in a month before our trip and was able to have them squeeze us in for an early 4:30 Saturday dinner. The inside was immaculate. We had a great time at the bar area before dinner service. Loved the library nook, the piano bar, stained glass skylights, mural, chandeliers and the view of the sushi bar. The bar servers were busy prepping, but were attentive and quick with our drinks. The whiskey list was full of good reliable selections. I enjoyed an O.K.I. Single Barrel Jeff Ruby Selection. (Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana) It was a nice start to a great evening. We eventually got the call to be seated and met our server Syd. What a great man. Friendly, attentive, passionate about his job and great to my kid. The menu was loaded with great choices. We ended up ordering the Beef Carpaccio - $30 Anchovy Aioli, Capers, Arugula and Shaved Parmesan for an app. It was a big portion. Melt in your mouth, thin sliced, tender beef with a great balance of flavors. For Dinner I highly recommend the Australian Wagyu Ribeye Cap - 10oz. Margaret River Beef. I wasn't in the mood for a huge steak but wanted the flavor, didn't want a filet, but wanted the tenderness. I wanted the seasoning to stand out without crowning the meat (although the Burrow Creole Crawfish sauce sounds delicious). What a home run of a steak. Flavorful, tender, seasoned just right and the slight crispiness on the outside just completed it. It was tough to choose a steak, but Syd was 100% on point with this recommendation. My pal had the same and was equally impressed. My son had a Petite Filet Mignon - 8oz Center-Cut and devoured it. For sides the Spicy Vodka Gnocchi - Blue Crab, Shrimp, Fines Herbes, Shaved Parmesan was ridiculous. I was hesitant because Gnocchi's are heavy, but the mix Crab, Shrimp and Gnocchi helped make it lighter and the flavors/spicy bite were off the hook. My son wanted their Tater Tots - Tuffle Aioli, Parmesan, Chives. He was in heaven and the portion was sharable. You couldn't fit dessert in us after that meal! The ambiance in the bar area is the reason to go to Jeff Ruby's. It's beautiful, particularly in the winter months. For us, having Cole Thompson as part of the team caring for us was an even bigger highlight. Cole is one of the kindest and most skilled servers we have had in Cincinnati. He has an instinct for exactly when and how to serve the table so as not to interrupt the meal. He takes quiet initiative to make sure everything at the table is as it should be. He is relatively new, and his hiring tells me new managers, like Daniel, are steering the restaurant in the right direction. Friends, I have been avoiding Ruby's ever since I took my out-of-town relatives there last year, and was completely embarrassed by the obsequious service we received. It was truly awful. It was cringe. The server enquired of, and kept calling my guests by, their first names. All the server had to do was see the looks on their faces and how they recoiled every time the server approached the table to see this was not appreciated. The meal was all about them, the servers. Their constant dialogue about themselves was disturbing and jarring. It was obvious to me that this patter was being taught. These servers were being formally trained to run the table as if it were dinner theatre. Gruesome. Therefore, I made this week's reservation with some trepidation. However, having Cole Thompson serve us changed all of that. We will be back again this month. Foodwise, the Freddie Salad is delicious. The king crab legs and jumbo prawn cocktail are exactly as they should be. I would appreciate a few simply prepared green vegetable offerings to pair with the steak. And for the menu items at Ruby's, the more simply prepared are the best. (By the way, "rare" really does mean rare for steaks at Ruby's! All other steakhouses in the area serve medium rare when rare is ordered.) I think Ruby's needs to bring in a young, innovative but classically trained chef to address how meals are plated and served, and to tweak the menu a bit. I think they need more flair and care at this price point. The organization showed this kind of intelligence when creating the new space, which feels fresh while still delivering the coziness imparted by tradition. After the big Ravens win against the Bengals we had reservations at this fine dining restaurant. The atmosphere is conducive to conversation and enjoying the wonderful meal. Our server Tommy and his team were top notch. Explanations of the menu as well as recommendations. Water glasses refilled and napkins refolded when a guest left the table. We started with Oysters Rockefeller and shrimp cocktail that the 5 of us shared. Oysters were prepared nicely and the shrimp were huge. I split a Wedge salad with my cousin; we were glad we split it as the portion was large. It came with pork belly instead of bacon crumbles. We all ordered steaks. I had the New York strip, Pittsburgh style. The outside was nicely seared and the inside was medium rare as I had ordered. It was excellent. We also had the Anna potatoes and Brussels sprouts as sides. An excellent meal. Even though we were all stuffed to the gills, we shared a piece of carrot cake and some vanilla ice cream. We always visit Jeff Ruby Steakhouse and also The Precinct for any of our family celebrations. This particular visit was for our annual family Christmas celebration and the food, service and ambiance was fantastic once again. The Speakeasy room is perfect for our loud boisterous celebrations as we would probably be annoying to the other diners in the main dining room. We never regret our choice of where to go for these special occasions. Be sure to double-check your bill and keep your receipt. I was overcharged by more than $100 after my visit. It appears our waiter altered the tip amount and added an extra charge without my authorization, even though I had already left the suggested tip. When I called to report it, the manager reviewed the situation, confirmed the discrepancy, apologized, and issued a refund.
