When I visited Jacksonville for work last month, I tried a J. Alexander's that I loved the burger and the cheesecake to go to have in the hotel room later that evening. When driving and saw there was a location here in Arizona, I told my coworker this is where we had to have lunch! Walking in, we were immediately greeted and this location is beautiful. We were seated and definitely feel like a clean, new location to join the Chandler, Ahwatukee, Phoenix area. Excited to dive in as I had such a great experience at the previous one. What We Ordered: - Coke + Lime: my good ole standby. Carbonation was just right, and the lime adds the perfect balance of sweetness of the Coca Cola. - San Antonio Tortilla Soup (not pictured): My coworker friend ordered as she is a creature of habit when she sees Chicken Tortilla Soup. She was so quick to try as it was recommended by the hostess who sat us. She'd be the judge of it! And the verdict... she really enjoyed it and said that could have easily been her lunch. - Steak Taco: my coworker said they were pretty good, and very filling as she needed a box to take away as the soup was so filling. - Steak Burger: when ordering, they mentioned due to fat content, this had to be well done. That should have been my indicator to order something else. When it came, I was quickly disappointed and wish I went with the regular burger for the same price point. It came with tomato, lettuce, pickle, and onion versus this one which was pretty plain. Between it being fairly lackluster with toppings, the temperature on the cook deterred me from enjoying. Overall, I wasn't impressed with my food and was also disappointed this location doesn't offer cheesecake like the one in Jacksonville did. Perhaps this was a seasonal item, and I hope that it becomes a staple on all J. Alexander's nationwide as that cheesecake was DIVINE. A miss for me in terms of this visit, but my coworker enjoyed her tortilla soup and tacos so I settled on a 4 Star. The artichoke was probably the best thing on the plate. I've always been a fan of a great grilled artichoke. The steak while a good cut was dry and kinda cold. My wife had better luck with her steak. She said she liked hers. The fried could have been fried for another minute to get a better crisp. The service was very good and I like the steakhouse vibe but in a kinda business casual way. They have a happy hour sit at the bar menu and it must be pretty good because the bar was full. We used our quarterly Amex Rezy credit for our dinner. Had I paid the full $150 out of pocket I'd have been pretty disappointed. Before I spend that kind of money unless you're trying to impress a date of business associate I'd save my money and eat at that place with Texas in the name. For you anniversary you get a glass of champagne and for your birthday you get dessert. Maybe I'll try the Happy Hour. I did forget one thing. The Alex salad. At $14 it's a joke. I asked our server if the salad was large enough to share? It was but the menu says if you order the salad with an entree it's only $10. The waiter added the $14 salad because the $10 salad isn't enough to share. Also what kind of steak house doesn't have a wedge? Wedges are always enough to split. And many places have an option to split for a few dollars more. The cost of soups and salads is getting out of hand. read more

First timers and so glad we decided to try this place! Came to celebrate retirement and we wanted to splurge with a celebration dinner. Our server, Skylar, was great as was everyone else who learned we there to celebrate. Love that they set an envelope at the table announcing the reason for the celebration. We went all out, starting with the grilled artichokes and the wife had a Midnight Margarita. I have to be honest here...not the best grilled artichokes we've had! They were very tough and although gilled with some nice soft pieces, most of them were not edible. The remoulade served with it was "ok" but overall, not a do over for us. Wife loved the drink, said it was perfect and she asked for a sugar rim in place of salt. We both decided on beef so I had the prime rib, which I asked for rare and then thrown on the grill to bring it up to medium. My favorite way to have prime rib and boy oh boy, the chefs did it right! The meat was tender and flavorful and I had asked for both creamed and raw horseradish...I like it hot so mixing the two brought it to the perfect flavor. Wife ordered the NY Strip, cooked to medium and her steak was perfect. So flavorful, tender, and juicy. We also decided on a side of the brussels spouts, which were roasted but way over done in my opinion. Loved the mashed potatoes that came with my prime rib...lots of chunks of potatoes and so creamy. Wife had mac and cheese with hers and she said it was creamy and flavorful and loved it. I had read reviews about the carrot cake so we decided to just eat half of our meals, taking home the leftovers for next day feasting. Ok, this carrot cake is dense, sweet, and had good flavor but the over abundance of frosting made it really, really sweet! We both had a few bites and decided to bring the rest home. The restaurant itself is nicely done, upscale feel but yet not stuffy. The staff was friendly and again, our server was fantastic...thank you Skylar! We wanted to try a new place and found this restaurant. I made a reservation on their website for 11:30am. There was plenty of reservation times available and the restaurant was pretty much empty when we got there. Another couple was there before us. The space had plenty of seating. Our server recommended the Hong Kong Shrimp and we asked for the sauce on the side. We enjoyed it and it was a nice change from our usually calamari orders. The mac n cheese was delicious and one of the best I have had. We would definitely order that again. The crunchy shrimp roll had red pepper, which gave it a nice flavor and the sushi rice tasted freshly made and not dry. The ribeye steak had nice marbling and flavor. They offered us free champagne toast for our special celebration, but we declined. Overall, the staff (Troy, our server, and the manager) were all nice and helpful. A great experience. The atmosphere here was very calming and peaceful with jazz music playing in the background. I was greeted and seated immediately upon entering. The dining area was very clean and almost like a showroom. Gabrielle my waitress was very nice. She explained the menu and suggested some of her favorite appetizers one being the Hong Kong Shrimp. I ordered those and they wee so good. They were still crunchy even with the sauce on them. The sauce was perfectly balanced with sweet and spicy. The shrimp were cooked just right with a firm bite. I love the fresh bed of lettuce underneath them too. I ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich. It was so good and hot in temperature. There was a spicy kick that was perfect since it didn't overpower the rest of the flavors. The bun was toasted and fluffy. I didn't care for the shoestring fries because they were more like the Jay's brand Shoestring chips. They were very crunchy which were more like overcooked. The bread pudding for dessert was tasty. This was our first time here. I was a bit skeptical because it seemed a bit more "high end l than I was in the mood for this night. So to be transparent, I went in a bit uncertain and maybe a little guarded. That all melted away into a great overall experience. *Ambience: The ambience is excellent, it feels upscale yet relaxed and comfortable. It has an unmistakeable modern feel, very clean, open, not too loud but good energy, high ceilings and spacious. It was genuinely comforting that it's new and clean and modern and open feeling, but our booth felt private at the same time, with open sweeping, unobstructed views inside including the bar and kitchen with big windows letting in just enough light and a view of outside. *Service: the service was outstanding. Started with our waiter's assistant who greeted us promptly, introduced herself, and was friendly and attentive - a little awkward, like it's her first restaurant job, but she was well trained and had a great attitude. Our sever was awesome and I forgot his name. He was super genuine and attentive. The manager stopped over to check in and couldn't have been more genuine. Everyone was friendly, attentive and caring, it was great. *Food: We both ordered a mixed drink, she got the 21 Manhattan and I ordered the Doppelgänger. Both were surprisingly large, and were truly excellent, we were shocked with how good and big they were. They brought the remainder of the Manhattan from the shaker and it was almost another full drink. Drinks were a really nice surprise. For food we started by ordering a side of roasted Brussel Sprouts as an app - sides here are almost all ala carte. The Brussels weren't great initially, nice char but very bland. We asked for balsamic vinegar and they happily brought a bottle along with a bottle of olive oil, we added both and they were much better. My wife ordered the trout. I'm not a huge fish guy, but this was incredibly good! Excellent coating, moist, steamy, and flavorful, but not "fishy", fish and came with amazing rice and stellar coleslaw, seriously both sides were 5 stars. Her whole meal was excellent! I ordered the large cut of prime rib which came with amazing g mashed potatoes, it was very big, cooked exactly as ordered and tasted great. It had less marbling than I like, so less steak flavor in the middle, but was very soft and adding creamy horseradish gave it the extra little kick it needed. Pretty delicious. *Value: for 2 incredible bar drinks, an appetizer and 2 large and excellent meals, with tax and tip, we were out the door for around $150. I'm pretty fiscally responsible and even I felt like this meal and experience were definitely worth it. 100%. *Overall: great service, very comfortable upscale but easy and comfortable ambience, excellent food and drinks, at a strong value. After three prior visits that didn't quite hit the mark, I almost went somewhere else tonight--but decided to give J. Alexander's one more shot, and I'm glad I did. I sat at the bar, and Nelly was my bartender and server--and she set the tone from the start. She was exceptional. Completely on top of everything, effortlessly managing the bar while also guiding others behind the scenes. You could tell she takes real pride in her work. What stood out most was how guests interacted with her--several made a point to say goodbye and thank her on their way out. That doesn't happen by accident. At one point, I even caught her quietly singing along while working--and she has a beautiful voice. It was one of those small, unintentional moments that added to the overall experience and made the atmosphere feel even more genuine. The rest of the team at the bar was great as well, but Nelly clearly leads by example. I even made a point to connect with the manager to share how impressed I was with the service she provided. She truly made the experience. This visit completely changed my perspective. I'll be asking for Nelly every time going forward. read more

We started with the fried calamari, and it was perfectly crispy with a light, flavorful coating that kept me coming back for more--exactly how calamari should be. The steak and fries were spot on: the steak cooked to perfection, crispy shoestring fries, and the béarnaise sauce was fantastic and really tied the whole dish together. We had high expectations coming in for dinner, especially with it being highlighted as an upscale casual spot. We made reservations via Resy. We did arrive a bit early, but from the initial interaction with the host(s), the tone and experience fell off. When we were seated, it ended up being a table that had been openly available the entire time we were waiting, as it had a table card with the guest and party size. That made it odd, given our extended wait. Once we got seated, the experience didn't improve. Our server wasn't attentive, and basic things like water, silverware, and guidance on menu choices took longer than expected. When asking about the food, the responses were vague and not very helpful. I did feel like the menu was a bit limited. We ordered the Calamari to start. For my main, I chose the ribs w/broccoli (instead of fries) and the 'not so ordinary mac & cheese) and my friend ordered the crab cake special. Unfortunately, the ribs were underwhelming and lacked a standout flavor. They honestly reminded me of something from a national chain that is good, but doesn't label themself as upscale. The mac & cheese was the highlight and why 2 stars. It was good, rich, but good. The bar side of the restaurant with the TVs is actually very nice, and I could see it being a good spot as a meetup with a friend or even a business associate to grab a drink. As a dinner experience, it fell short of expectations. Even on the way out, I tried to make eye contact to say thank you and felt overlooked. For a restaurant that promotes itself as focusing on quality food, attentive service, and consistent experiences, this visit missed the mark on all 3. We started with the Hong Kong shrimp appetizer and it was DELISH!!! The shrimp was crispy, the saucy was creamy and had a great amount of heat. For lunch we ordered the Carolina Crab Cake and Baby Back Ribs. The crab cake was outstanding! It had giant lumps of crab, it was cooked very well and the mustard sauce was something special. The ribs were also good, they were fall off the bone, tender. My only complaint would be that the silver skin was left on, so I had to take that off for every bite, but the flavor and tenderness made up for it. Both dishes were served with shoe string fries...and when a shoe string french fry is done right, they're hard to stop eating!! The ambiance inside is beautiful, with big windows, open concept from bar to restaurant on either side of the room. They did a great job remodeling and making it look fresh and new!! The new location in Chandler AZ is very nice! Cameron was a fantastic server!! Drink service was a bit slow but the food was very good I opted for the Crispy Chicken dinner - it was great!! Chicken was perfect, Cole slaw was excellent and shoe string fries were great! My wife had the cypress salad and just wished she opted for the honey mustard dressing instead of the ranch dressing Portions were generous Wine selection by the glass is passable but not great Plan on $40ish per person maybe a bit more based on drinks We'll go back for sure read more

They absolutely made us feel like family and were immensely impressed. The GM came in and checked on us as we were decorating a few hours ahead. Yes, yes and yes! Been a J. Alexander fan since 2011 when living in FL, when they had the secret honey butter croissant menu. Was super surprised when we saw they were coming back to AZ and made a 5:30p reservation. Everything was perfection with one small hick up. The staff were super friendly and very attentive. Kelce was over the top nice and our server was funny! We started with the hong kong shrimp. The shrimp was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Not to mention, the portion size was huge. Entrees were: Crab cakes with coleslaw and not your ordinary mac and cheese and steak maui with not your ordinary mac and cheese. Everything was just like we remembered it. Steak super flavorful and tender, jumbo lump crab pieces with the most wonderful sauce, creamy mac and cheese and yummy coleslaw. Dessert: Carrot cake and key lime pie. Wow, and just wow. The carrot cake will literally have you ordering the whole sheet. The crust on the key lime with the tang of the filling, yes please. Drinks: Espresso martini. The espresso martini was creamy and delicious and my disaronno sour was good. The only hick up was my disaronno sour was forgotten until I reminded someone walking by. The manager brought it over, apologized and said it was on the house. Which in fact, it was not on the house and was on the bill. We didn't say anything about it and paid. No biggie. Was just a bit bothered because the attention to that detail was missed and the statement wasn't honored. We felt that we shouldn't have had to remind them. Oh, we didn't like how big the bar was and placement of it. It takes up too much space upon walking in and doesn't allow a comfortable wait when waiting for your table. I've been here a few times and had somewhere between a decent to good experience. Last night I got there after the rush, and sat at the bar. Nobody wiped down my seat area, even though it was fairly dirty until I asked. Right after I sat down, another couple sat down and their area never got wiped down, even though there were three or four people behind the bar and only six or seven people sitting at the bar. The bartenders talked amongst themselves on a regular basis, even though my wine glass was empty, and my water glass was empty. I had to wave them down to get service. I ordered the New York steak and it was way overcooked with almost no flavor to it. I've gotten the steak there twice and both times it was not very good. I will probably give it another try or two, but the service clearly needs to improve. read more

The restaurant is beautiful inside and well staffed with friendly servers who greet you. The bar is well staffed, however it still takes them a few minutes to acknowledge you and bring you a menu. Yes, this was a Friday night with a busy bar area, however the bar wasn't near full capacity and I have dined at the bar before with a similar experience. I had the filet mignon. I requested it cooked to medium. When it arrived it was blue rare. The outer crust was burnt and its flavor/ taste was just "ok". First time here since they opened in Nov 2025. First impressions are important I think and they gave a good one. The vibe is definitely more upscale but not suit and tie fancy. They have the luxury feel you would expect from a upper scale restaurant without the snobbery or judgmental eye. Nina was our exceptional service provider, she knew when to assist and when not to interrupt the conversation with a how is everything with a mouthful of food. The service is very friendly- you can sit inside, which is a little fancier, private booths and tables, or outside at tables. Patio is small but was perfect for us. If you need extra attentive service- sit inside, cause it seems like they give servers a table outside, but their actual section is inside. Food: excellent, we had the French dip, millionaire tenderloin sandwich, alex salad, and the grouper. I do think it was odd that the salad does not come with bread and instead of being able to add a side of bread, we had to order an entire $8 appetizer of bread. The bread was delicious though. We came in for lunch on a Saturday and, overall, I would give the experience 3 stars. We ordered several items from the menu to get a broad sense of the restaurant. We started with the nigiri plate and the Hong Kong shrimp. The Hong Kong shrimp was excellent--flavorful and one of the highlights of the meal. Unfortunately, the nigiri plate was very disappointing. The sushi rice was undercooked, which is especially problematic since rice is the foundation of good sushi. The fish slices were also extremely thin, and combined with the undercooked rice, the dish fell well below expectations. For my entrée, I ordered the chicken sandwich. The chicken was quite dry and seemed to be missing an aioli or sauce that could have added moisture and flavor. We also ordered the grilled hanger steak medium, but it arrived significantly overcooked. The service was friendly, and our server was very nice throughout the meal. However, the restaurant did not feel particularly family-friendly, as there were very few options for children and no kids' menu available. Overall, there were a few bright spots, but the food quality was inconsistent enough that we left disappointed. read more

It is a beautiful, open space with a great bar and spacious dining areas. The booths are very comfortable and the ambiance was nicely designed and appointed. We had a delicious meal that began with a tasty Caesar Salad. We ordered Crab Cakes, Pecan Trout and sushi for our main dishes. Unfortunately, the sushi did not arrive until after the other entrees were at the table. We waited almost twenty minutes for the sushi, (which was for a guest in our party.) The server was apologetic and attentive, as was the manager, however, the delay was unfortunate. By the time it came to the table, our warm food was tepid at best (but we did not want to eat in front of our guest who had to wait.) While eating we ordered additional drinks. Came in as a group and they were so accommodating. Our party was seated at two tables, but the manager was so awesome he moved us to a private room. The service was to notch. The food was scrumptious. The layout of the restaurant was very inviting. The food was yummy and the martini's were perfection . First time visiting this spot after seeing under construction for awhile in the AJ's parking lot. Sat at the bar to try their Happy Hour (3-5 I think). It's a very open and well setup area with an open kitchen. Kevin was our server, knew what he was talking about and was a pleasant interaction. Ended up having the shrimp taco, chicken taco, deviled eggs, and the spinach queso. The tacos def had a bit of a kick(spicy) but all of it was delicious. One of our family favorites from our days with a house in Nashville. Worth the drive from North Scottsdale to Mesa. Some family favorites are Mr Jacks crispy chicken fingers and fries, Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwhich and the Tai Kai Chicken Salad! Service was great as was the food.
