I wanted to avoid giving a bad review public, but since I haven't heard anything at all from management after writing them directly, here I am. My comments to them were somewhat lengthy, so to sum it up: Flavorless New York strip, bland mac & cheese, a smashed potato with literally nothing on it; not even salt, 10/10 sushi (the only thing giving them 2 stars). This was an extremely disappointing experience, especially given the reputation J. Alexander's has and my prior positive experiences at other locations. The best part of the evening was the hostess, who was genuinely kind and welcoming, and the Oreo dessert, which was a solid combination of Oreo, ice cream, and fudge, even though the Oreo itself was harder than expected. Unfortunately, everything else fell short. My ribs arrived barely warm and clearly tasted old, with barbecue sauce that seemed like it had been sitting on them for quite some time. My daughter's burger came out incorrect despite clear requests: the tomato was not removed, and although she asked for light mustard, the burger was heavily slathered with mustard instead. My wife ordered a baked potato and was informed 15 minutes later that baked potatoes wouldn't be available for another 45 minutes. Her steak was average at best and required sauce just to be enjoyable. Service issues added to the frustration. We had to ask for basic items like straws and silverware, and when we had several to-go items, we also had to request a bag. Attention to detail was clearly lacking. Cleanliness was another concern. While seated in a booth, the carpet near the table next to us was covered in crumbs and looked unkempt, which is unacceptable for a new restaurant and an establishment positioned as upscale. The bill came to $165, and none of the food justified the price. I still left a $40 tip out of respect for how demanding serving can be, but the service itself was well below average and certainly not reflective of that gratuity. Based solely on service quality, a tip would not have been warranted. Overall, this was a wasted evening and nearly $200 poorly spent. I was especially disappointed because the J. Alexander's in Birmingham has always been top notch in both food and service. I was hoping for that same standard here, but this location missed the mark entirely. read more

First time coming to J. Alexander's. We were early for our reservation and they had us wait maybe 5 min and got us in. Menu wasn't huge. After asking the waitress a few questions , like do I have to go with the side item that it has next to the steak? Answer is no by the way. We ordered. The steak was large and had a nice char on it. Tasted like it was cooked over a campfire, which was a nice change. Got the baked potato it was huge. Hubby and I both took home half our steak and potato's home and loved them the next day for lunch. My hubby ordered the carrot cake which he loves and I usually take one bite because I never end up liking them. But OMG this was the best carrot cake I have EVER tasted. It was served warm. One of my good Goode girlfriends told me that she and her husband recently dined at this restaurant. I'm from the Chicago area and the last time I ate at a J Alexander's was near the airport in Chicago. Anyway, I had the salmon and it was pretty tasty. I sat at the bar and enjoyed the company of a couple of new friends that I met. The service was outstanding and the food was good. I thought my salmon was a little overcooked and it needed a little bit of salt but other than that, it was tasty. Oh yeah, when my husband and I went to the Location in Chicago, he ordered the carrot cake and loved it! In fact, my brother who lives in the Chicago area and his wife raved about the carrot cake so we decided to try it. It was really good in Chicago. However, the carrot cake at this location can't hold a candle to the one in Chicago. I enjoyed the ambience as I sat at the bar and was able to do some people watching. I also met a couple of new friends and we decided to meet up there at J Alexander's monthly. Came in this morning with my family and we loved everything. Our server Daniel was great! Very attentive, friendly, and made sure our experience was good. The calamari and huevos rolls are fantastic! When I saw this restaurant open, I got excited. Many years ago I used to go to the Oak Brook Illinois location when visiting family, it was wonderful, 5 stars. My question after my dining experience today is WHAT HAPPENED!! I noticed the prices were quite a bit higher, obviously, but if there's value in it, I don't mind paying, and if the restaurant was anywhere near what I remembered, it would be worth it. They shouldn't be charging that kind of money for the quality of food that we received. I love prime rib, I've had it from many places throughout the country. I feel prime rib from Outback is much better and cheaper. The beef itself was rather dry and had no flavor. I'm pretty certain the au jus was just beef broth as it was watery and had no taste. I was able to give it a little more flavor by adding salt and pepper. If I were to describe the prime rib in one word, I would say disappointing. Especially for $45!! My son had the Maui steak, we asked for medium rare we got medium well. The best thing about it was the Maui sauce, the steak wasn't anything special. It was ok, but not for $50. My mom got the chicken. She said it was prepared well but it lacked flavor. The best thing about our meal was the mashed potatoes, they were pretty good. Came in for dinner to try this new place out & was blown away. The hostess Brea gave us a romantic booth & spent time with us to explain the menus & specials. Our server Carrie gave top notch service. She recommended the artichokes and calamari & crab cakes, all were incredible and large portions. My husband got the fillet, and my daughter got the French dip sandwich (we could have shared the portions of our huge). The martinis are strong and they even give you a side car. (Extra drink on the side) love that touch! My favorite thing on the menu we tried has to be to grilled artichokes. They are just like Houston's and Hillstones. To die for! The manager Seth even came over to check on us and see how our meal was. So excited to have an amazing restaurant close by...we will be back! read more

So this is going to be a little weird. Overall I'd say the experience was more a 3.5 but a few things made this a 4 and they just opened so I'm rounding up for now. So first off we had the spinach queso dip and the calamari. Both were VERY good. The marinara is a little sweeter and chunky. The spinach did is NOT like a spinach and artichoke dip. More of a queso with spinach and artichoke dip vibes. My kids loved it! The steaks were cooked perfect. I was actually impressed. I thought the filet looked better than the NY strip. I got a French dip. The prime rib inside this thing is perfect. One major issue came up. It does not come with cheese so I asked for Swiss. They added shredded Swiss and it was not melted at all. So it sort of ruined a very good sandwich. I'm not sure if it was supposed to be melted or not but if it isn't they should just say that I would have opted out. Finally, the star of the show the carrot cake. This is probably the best carrot cake I've ever had. It comes out WARM! And there's coconut inside the thing. Incredible. read more

I must agree with some of the less than stellar reviews of this restaurant. We've given them a try three times over the course of a few months. The staff seem rather immature, largely inattentive, and often seem to be more focused on casual group chat with each other than the patrons. We experienced long waits between ambivalent server interactions. The menu is very limited, and the food quality is just so-so given the higher price points. The atmosphere is sterile and spartan, like an upscale Denny's. Overall, it's a shame really, as this part of town could use some higher end establishments. Not recommended. read more

Overall, this is a very nice restaurant, that looks upscale, has a great vibe and staff is outstanding. There were 5 of us that went to the Chandler AZ restaurant last night, and this was our first experience with this restaurant. The staff that greeted us at the front door were very friendly and helpful, and the service during our meal was excellent as well. The meal itself was not bad, but not up to expectations. Two of our group got the Roasted Chicken, which they enjoyed. My wife got a salmon salad, which was also quite good. My brother in law got a hamburger, which came with shoestring potatoes which were cold and inappropriate for a high end restaurant. The biggest disappointment was the baby back ribs that I had, which were overcooked, over seasoned and dry. Just not good at all. To summarize, this restaurant was 5 star in many areas, but the food itself needs some improvement. read more

In all transparency, I am easily pleased and look for the good in all places. However, J. Alexander's does not seem worth it to me especially compared to other options close by at a lower price. We had seen the menu online before showing up so we knew the price point and wanted a kinda bougie brunch vibe, maybe that's what set us up for disappointment. We showed up on Sunday afternoon only an hour after they opened. We were pleasantly greeted by the hosting staff and sat in a booth immediately. Only about 30% of the tables were filled, maybe even less than that. It's a large restaurant so we noticed multiple waiters/waitresses keeping busy with random tasks. We did take maybe 10-15 minutes to put our order in as we wanted to try a few things. My husband went with an assortment of their sushi rolls and nigiri plate. I chose the poke bowl and we ordered chicken tenders with fries for my toddler. We saw plates of burgers being walked past us and those did look tasty but I don't know about $21 tasty. We noticed the wait about 25 minutes after ordering...then it got a little confusing for us as we were only few of the tables and we ordered mainly raw fish. That wait time then extended to 35 minutes before my husband and I received our plates. Our waitress was kind but maybe could've been a little more transparent as she told us that she was just going to run back and grab my kid's chicken tender meal and she'll be right back. Well it obviously wasn't even done because it took over 5 minutes before she came back. So 40 minutes total to receive our food in a near empty restaurant with an abundance of staff. We also noticed a table nearby where a family had finished their meal when we showed up. That table still had plates with leftover fries and half drunk drinks for over 30 minutes before one of the host staff came over to clear it away. Not sure why one of the multiple waiters and bussers that walked past it didn't do anything? Then came the taste test. Mind you, my husband's plate alone was $52 for 6 pieces of nigiri and two eight piece rolls. My poke bowl was $28 and even the kid's meal was $10. As far as my husband's plate, it was meh. Maybe the rolls used real crab rather than the surimi crab and that justified the price but you couldn't tell the difference when you ate it. My poke bowl was sickeningly sweet, I couldn't taste the tuna at all. No joke, I thought for a second that they did the viral watermelon tuna because I have never had dessert level tuna before. The sauce tasted simply like spicy mayo and maybe a ton of oyster sauce which caused it to be sweet. The toppings were all standard poke bowl toppings, edamame, pickled onion, avocado, etc. But that couldn't compete with the sauce. After a few bites of her dish, my daughter even complained of her chicken tenders being "spicy". My husband took a bite and coughed a bit commenting "yeah that's a lot of pepper". How do you even get chicken tenders wrong?! I know the dredge needs lots of seasoning, I'd prefer it with lots of seasoning but my 4 year old doesn't, that's just part of having a kid's menu. The shoestring fries were probably our favorite part of the meal, and they stacked up about 2 cups worth on her plate so we were all munching on them by the end of the meal. All in all I'd recommend getting all you can eat sushi from Yama for $36, your poke from Ahipoki for $15 and your chicken tenders from Canes. Maybe J. Alexanders has out of this world American dishes, we don't care $100 enough to try to find out. read more

The restaurant is nice and not noisy. The steak (Medium) was under cooked.. it took the chef to correct it twice to get the steak correctly cooked. All other foods are super salty. (Typical restaurant food - salty). The chocolate martini was nice and a good deal. Service overall is good. We'll probably go back and try again. read more

Four of us went for opening night, which I would expect some kinks, but service was smooth everything came out perfectly! Everyone was so friendly! Some started with an Old Fashion and pear martini-very happy with both. Got the grilled bread, calamari and spinach queso appetizers...all delicious. Entrees we ordered and shared were the Nashville chicken sandwich (pretty spicy), chicken piccata from the seasonal menu, and Alex's salad. All delicious. We shared the key lime pie and it was all it was hyped up to be! Will definitely be back to try some of the other dishes on the menu! read more

Very disappointing lunch at J. Alexander's. For a restaurant at this price point, the quality and service were surprisingly poor. The hamachi was cut thick and poorly presented (not even served with chopsticks). When Chef Alan checked on us and we mentioned it wasn't good, he didn't apologize or offer to remake it. Our steak frites were ordered medium but came out extremely well done, and the broccoli that should have been part of the dish was missing entirely. Service was just as disappointing -- the bartender never checked on us once. The whole place felt disorganized, like a rookie show where no one really knew what they were doing. At one point we even saw a bartender measuring a wine pour with a ruler, which was honestly laughable for a restaurant charging these kinds of prices. Definitely not the level of professionalism or quality we expected. read more

J. Alexander's just opened and we have been looking forward to checking it out. We went for dinner with the family and it didn't disappoint! Loved the ambiance. It's a nice change for the area. Lights also dimmed for dinner service, which was really nice! You can go "dressy casual" or dress up for a nice date night. My personal recommendation would be to not go too casual as we saw someone leaving after their meal in sweatpants and it really doesn't fit the ambiance and looked a bit out of place. I could see the bar area could get a little noisy, but nothing crazy, the dining room was nice and quiet but not overly quiet. It was actually perfect for us. We were greeted with a warm welcome. James was our server. He was training someone but that didn't affect his service or attention to our table or to any details of our meals. Both he and the person he was training were very welcoming, friendly, and service was spot on. We started with the spinach dip/salsa and chips and a sushi roll that James recommended, the Scorpion Roll. While I don't eat sushi, those who did said it was very good! Between our table, some of us ordered the prime rib, the burgers, Caesar salad, and a few extra sides, desserts, and a few drinks from the bar. Everything was cooked perfectly, as we ordered it. Everything came out in order, was hot and fresh, and the quality of meats, great overall. Desserts ordered were Creme Brûlée and the chocolate cake. The Creme Brûlée was a nice portion and the chocolate cake is more dense and more fudge-like. Both are definitely shareable between a few people to enjoy a few bites of each. My son-in-law ordered a Manhattan and it came with a sidecar, which was a nice touch. If you're looking for someplace to go for a lunch or dinner, date night or as a group, I'd highly recommend checking it out. I would NOT recommend this restaurant for small children who are not well behaved. It's just NOT kid friendly, which we can appreciate. Unfortunately for us, there were 2 small children a few booths away and the parents let their kids scream and run around freely. Thankful they were leaving shortly after we arrived. Note, this is NOT the place to do that. If you're going to bring small children, please do your part and parent them and ensure they know to sit on their bottoms and enjoy their meals. Overall, 5 stars for food and service! Posted a TikTok of our experience even. Looking forward to returning and next time and we're going to check it out for lunch. They do have a nice bar area as well so don't be afraid to go alone. Beautiful new restaurant that replaces the old Buca Di Peppo italian place. Hostess and servers were amazing and gave great recommendations for drinks, apps and main dishes. We ordered the calamari and our server was able to accommodate different dipping sauces for it (served with a really good marinara but I prefer an aoli or remoulade)! We also had the roasted artichokes which were amazing, crab cakes that were absolutely divine with huge chunks of lump crab meat, and the NY Strip steak which was tender and cooked to perfection! We will definitely be repeat customers and look forward to visiting and seeing their daily specials especially around fish and seafood options! read more

I had a chicken pasta soup and a Caesar salad with Shrimp. The food and service were great. One thing I was peeved about though was their "Premium Club Soda". They charge $4 for a 6.8fl oz bottle of club soda?? lol. I asked later if I could have just gotten a club soda out of a gun like just about every other restaurant I've been to(free refills). They said no. If they are going to play this game, at least they should let you know right off the bat. I know, minimal complaint. read more

My experience was such that I just went into the restaurant for a simple slice of key lime pie. The manager advised me that Carl would be helping me. I did ask Carl to check to see if the pie had nuts. And he did. Carl was not very swift in delivering the key lime pie. He never once acknowledged me and my husband after that. Maybe because he figured handing over my 1 slice of pie order did not warrant a tip. It took me asking the manager to check o it for me and of course it was ready. He thanked the manager and never thanked us. I thought he was rude. And if his name is not Carl he was the red head working the bar on the 12 noon shift. read more

We had never been to JA's so we dropped in to sit on the patio. Once we were seated, we sat, and sat.... The server was very nice when she came over. The manager also came by; kudos to the service! The drinks were good. The food was underwhelming; and we had to send something back. Again, the service was great- they came by again to apologize. Very sweet! They comped my drink (thank you). We didn't order a lot, so we had limited samples. The people next to us also said their food was good, but did not meet their expectations. I feel badly leaving a review like this. I always went to J Alexander's in Oak Brook, Illinois when I lived there. This restaurant is just as great as the one in Illinois Seth, who I believe is one of the managers, was very polite and we engaged in a nice conversation. Cam, who worked at the bar, was very friendly and helpful. I did not get the other bartender's name who took care of me. She was also very nice. The food was great and I will be back. read more
