This place has been in my list since it opened and it was a great experience. We made a reservation and were seated right away. Hubs ordered the Maui steak and told me to say it was delicious in my review. He paired it with fries and cleaned his plate. I had the salmon burger, I didn't love it, but didn't hate it either. Came here on Sunday evening with reservations at 6 pm with my family and the place was pretty nice. Employee's were all very nice. We placed our order in and were surprised that our cocktails seemed to be forgotten. We had to flag our server down after 30 mins to get our drinks. He was nice and immediately got us our drinks. Then we waited for a long period and watched a few tables that came after us, receive their food order before we did. As we patiently waited, the manager came up to us to let us know that she was not happy with one of our food order due to the quality, so she is having them remake the dish. While I appreciated her coming out and offering an appetizer or salad, we were dining with my kiddo. I kindly asked if she can bring out the other dishes that were ready instead of holding up the dishes. Then all of a sudden, all our food was ready, however, the other 2 dishes that was sitting was almost room temperature. Here's a more detail review on each items. Cocktails: pretty good. Had the Peach Martini and the doppelgänger. Entrees: Ribs: this is one of the dishes we ordered that was sitting for a while. It was overcooked and you will see in the picture, kinda blackened. Meat is very dry, I would not recommend ordering this. Fish Special Mahi Mahi with Jalapeño sauce. The fish was cooked good, but the sauce is a bit much where it takes away the flavor of the fish. Palermo Chicken: this was the dish that the manager was not happy about. It was actually really good. I do recommend ordering this. I may come back to try the steak since that is what the restaurant is known for according to our server, but we had just had steak the evening before and wanted to try other things. The wife and I came during their Grand Opening! We arrived 20 minutes earlier than our 5pm reservation time. Two young ladies opened each of the two entrance doors for us and welcomed us in. The hostess greeted us immediately after entering the restaurant. She took our names and had another young lady seat us right away. We were given two menus: Main with Starters and Entrees and beverages on the back. The smaller menu had Today's Specials. Everything on the menus looked good! Our server suggested to start with Hong Kong Shrimp as our starter; so we took her suggestion. My wife chose the Prime Rib med/rare for her entree and I opted for the Maui Rib-eye med/rare. They both came with smashed potatoes. My wife also ordered a Doppleganger, which is a bourbon based cocktail with DiSaronno Amaretto. We both noticed other tables who ordered their meat entrees with fries. In fact there were several tables who ordered fries. They must know something and frequent other J. Alexander's restaurants. I'll have to order fries for my side next time. Must be damn good fries. Our Hong Kong Shrimp arrived on a bed of finely shredded cabbage. The shrimp were covered in a slightly spicy mayo type sauce similar to what you'd get with Bang Bang shrimp. They were delicious! Both our entrees looked picture perfect when they arrived. The Prime Rib was exactly how I pictured a prime rib to be. That is how I like a prime rib to look like when delivered in front of me! My Rib-eye looked just as good and mouthwatering covered with their Maui (teriyaki-like) sauce. Both entrees were cooked to perfection. We were frequently checked on by more than two servers. Their operation was like a well oiled machine. Their training certainly paid off. Not one glitch or misstep. We had a nice conversation with one of the female managers. Came in for the grand opening, and I have to say it was a pretty low-key, almost nonchalant launch. The hostesses greeted us as soon as we walked in, even though we didn't have a reservation. While we waited for our table, the bartenders were very attentive and offered us drink menus right away. We skipped appetizers and went straight to entrées. I ordered the barbecue baby back ribs, super tender, soft, and easily fell off the bone without even needing a knife. The skinny fries were nice and crunchy. My husband ordered the crab cake, which was packed with big, chunky pieces of crab. So delicious! We arrived at a great time because it wasn't too crowded yet. Overall, we'll definitely be back. My only complaint is that the booth seating felt a bit tight, and the table couldn't be adjusted, which made it slightly uncomfortable. read more

Super great place! We were pleasantly surprised as we tend to shy away from chains but man, this place has some terrific food! We adored the baby back ribs. Fall off the bone, just sticky enough and not too sweet. But our big plus? Two sides and we are now highly addicted to the cold wild rice orzo salad. What an unexpected new dish that is EPIC. He was very attentive, knowledgeable, and gave us great recommendations on drinks. I got the Pear Martini and it was delicious! Even though James has a busy table he made the effort to check in with us every chance he had. The manager even came by to check in on us to see if we were good. The ambiance is cool. We had pretty high expectations for J. Alexander's here in Chandler, AZ, but unfortunately, our experience fell short. Upon entry, the atmosphere gave off a somewhat immature vibe ... maybe because it was a late Thursday night -- but still, we expected something classier. The lighting was quite dark and while the restaurant appeared clean, it wasn't as spotless as one would hope from a new establishment. The hostess seemed less than enthusiastic about being there, which didn't set the best tone for the evening. After being seated, it took about 12 minutes before our server approached the table. When she did arrive, she seemed friendly but rushed, quickly pushing for our drink orders. We each ordered something different to get a feel for the menu, but it turned out to be surprisingly limited. For a restaurant with such high reviews and upscale pricing, the lack of variety was disappointing. The appetizers were just okay, nothing to rave about, and certainly not worth the price. Our entrées arrived only slightly warm, not hot, and honestly tasted pre-prepared. Nothing felt truly fresh except maybe the fried items. Even the fries, which resembled Freddy's cheeseburger fries, showed up lukewarm--and that's being generous. Between the four of us, our bill came out to just over $158. None of us finished our plates; we ate what we could mostly because it had been a long day without food. As for the atmosphere, the lighting was uncomfortably dim -- we actually needed our phone flashlights just to read the menus. The music was another downside: loud and unpleasant, making conversation difficult. Overall, we don't quite understand the hype around this place. For our family, including three twenty-something sons, the experience was underwhelming. Unless J. Have been wanting to try this new restaurant that opened last November. Finally got time and went out for husband's birthday dinner with my stepdaughter. The ambience was cool and had a great vibe! The bar was really cool looking and very busy. We started off with a bottle of wine and Captain and Coke. Those things were all very nice. Husband and daughter ended up having deviled eggs with candied bacon on top. They loved them! We all then got into the extensive menu. My stepdaughter had a Tuscan New York strip, which had a lot of rosemary on it. She loved it! My husband had a half of rotisserie chicken and said it was very moist & delicious. But for me, I had one of the BEST steaks I have had and I can't tell you in how long! It was called the Maui ribeye! It was marinated for three days in a sauce of pineapple, soy sauce, ginger, and I'm not sure what else, but the flavor of the steak was amazing.!!! Alexi's was our server and he was great! Super friendly, very efficient and very knowledgeable about the menu. They knew it was my husband's birthday and so they had a card for him signed by everyone and then brought a dessert on the house. I think this is my new favorite place in the east Valley. I think there might be another one in Scottsdale. I highly recommend them, but would definitely suggest making a reservation.! read more

We had dinner at J. Alexander's recently and overall the experience was a mix of great service and disappointing food. Our server was excellent--very attentive, friendly, and helpful throughout the meal. We originally planned to order the prime rib, but we were told that only the end cuts were available and that they were closer to medium. Since we prefer our steaks medium rare, we decided to order the New York strip instead. Unfortunately, both steaks came out very burnt on the outside. The char was so strong that it overpowered the flavor of the steak, which was disappointing considering the reputation of the restaurant and the price of the meal. One of my good Goode girlfriends told me that she and her husband recently dined at this restaurant. I'm from the Chicago area and the last time I ate at a J Alexander's was near the airport in Chicago. Anyway, I had the salmon and it was pretty tasty. I sat at the bar and enjoyed the company of a couple of new friends that I met. The service was outstanding and the food was good. I thought my salmon was a little overcooked and it needed a little bit of salt but other than that, it was tasty. Oh yeah, when my husband and I went to the Location in Chicago, he ordered the carrot cake and loved it! In fact, my brother who lives in the Chicago area and his wife raved about the carrot cake so we decided to try it. It was really good in Chicago. However, the carrot cake at this location can't hold a candle to the one in Chicago. I enjoyed the ambience as I sat at the bar and was able to do some people watching. I also met a couple of new friends and we decided to meet up there at J Alexander's monthly. This was an extremely disappointing experience, especially given the reputation J. Alexander's has and my prior positive experiences at other locations. The best part of the evening was the hostess, who was genuinely kind and welcoming, and the Oreo dessert, which was a solid combination of Oreo, ice cream, and fudge, even though the Oreo itself was harder than expected. Unfortunately, everything else fell short. My ribs arrived barely warm and clearly tasted old, with barbecue sauce that seemed like it had been sitting on them for quite some time. My daughter's burger came out incorrect despite clear requests: the tomato was not removed, and although she asked for light mustard, the burger was heavily slathered with mustard instead. My wife ordered a baked potato and was informed 15 minutes later that baked potatoes wouldn't be available for another 45 minutes. Her steak was average at best and required sauce just to be enjoyable. Service issues added to the frustration. We had to ask for basic items like straws and silverware, and when we had several to-go items, we also had to request a bag. Attention to detail was clearly lacking. Cleanliness was another concern. While seated in a booth, the carpet near the table next to us was covered in crumbs and looked unkempt, which is unacceptable for a new restaurant and an establishment positioned as upscale. The bill came to $165, and none of the food justified the price. I still left a $40 tip out of respect for how demanding serving can be, but the service itself was well below average and certainly not reflective of that gratuity. Based solely on service quality, a tip would not have been warranted. Overall, this was a wasted evening and nearly $200 poorly spent. I was especially disappointed because the J. Alexander's in Birmingham has always been top notch in both food and service. I was hoping for that same standard here, but this location missed the mark entirely. read more

First time coming to J. Alexander's. We were early for our reservation and they had us wait maybe 5 min and got us in. Menu wasn't huge. After asking the waitress a few questions , like do I have to go with the side item that it has next to the steak? Answer is no by the way. We ordered. The steak was large and had a nice char on it. Tasted like it was cooked over a campfire, which was a nice change. Got the baked potato it was huge. Hubby and I both took home half our steak and potato's home and loved them the next day for lunch. My hubby ordered the carrot cake which he loves and I usually take one bite because I never end up liking them. But OMG this was the best carrot cake I have EVER tasted. It was served warm. So this is going to be a little weird. Overall I'd say the experience was more a 3.5 but a few things made this a 4 and they just opened so I'm rounding up for now. So first off we had the spinach queso dip and the calamari. Both were VERY good. The marinara is a little sweeter and chunky. The spinach did is NOT like a spinach and artichoke dip. More of a queso with spinach and artichoke dip vibes. My kids loved it! The steaks were cooked perfect. I was actually impressed. I thought the filet looked better than the NY strip. I got a French dip. The prime rib inside this thing is perfect. One major issue came up. It does not come with cheese so I asked for Swiss. They added shredded Swiss and it was not melted at all. So it sort of ruined a very good sandwich. I'm not sure if it was supposed to be melted or not but if it isn't they should just say that I would have opted out. Finally, the star of the show the carrot cake. This is probably the best carrot cake I've ever had. It comes out WARM! And there's coconut inside the thing. Incredible. read more

I met a friend for dinner at the J Alexander in Chandler last evening, my first time there. The staff was welcoming, very friendly, and knowledgeable. They had my favorite wine, a Daou Cabernet. The food was beautifully prepared and so good. I highly recommend the Avocado Bomb, which is Hand-cut ahi tuna, crab salad, and crispy wontons. Came in for dinner to try this new place out & was blown away. The hostess Brea gave us a romantic booth & spent time with us to explain the menus & specials. Our server Carrie gave top notch service. She recommended the artichokes and calamari & crab cakes, all were incredible and large portions. My husband got the fillet, and my daughter got the French dip sandwich (we could have shared the portions of our huge). The martinis are strong and they even give you a side car. (Extra drink on the side) love that touch! My favorite thing on the menu we tried has to be to grilled artichokes. They are just like Houston's and Hillstones. To die for! Was excited to try this place, as I've been to other locations a long time ago. It is not a great experience. I asked if the prime rib was good, and the waitress said it was one of their more popular dishes. It was awful, and not fresh. I heard two other tables having things removed from their tab and getting gift certificates to come back. I would not return. read more

Overall, this is a very nice restaurant, that looks upscale, has a great vibe and staff is outstanding. There were 5 of us that went to the Chandler AZ restaurant last night, and this was our first experience with this restaurant. The staff that greeted us at the front door were very friendly and helpful, and the service during our meal was excellent as well. The meal itself was not bad, but not up to expectations. Two of our group got the Roasted Chicken, which they enjoyed. My wife got a salmon salad, which was also quite good. My brother in law got a hamburger, which came with shoestring potatoes which were cold and inappropriate for a high end restaurant. The biggest disappointment was the baby back ribs that I had, which were overcooked, over seasoned and dry. Just not good at all. To summarize, this restaurant was 5 star in many areas, but the food itself needs some improvement. read more

When I saw this restaurant open, I got excited. Many years ago I used to go to the Oak Brook Illinois location when visiting family, it was wonderful, 5 stars. My question after my dining experience today is WHAT HAPPENED!! I noticed the prices were quite a bit higher, obviously, but if there's value in it, I don't mind paying, and if the restaurant was anywhere near what I remembered, it would be worth it. They shouldn't be charging that kind of money for the quality of food that we received. I love prime rib, I've had it from many places throughout the country. I feel prime rib from Outback is much better and cheaper. The beef itself was rather dry and had no flavor. I'm pretty certain the au jus was just beef broth as it was watery and had no taste. I was able to give it a little more flavor by adding salt and pepper. If I were to describe the prime rib in one word, I would say disappointing. Especially for $45!! My son had the Maui steak, we asked for medium rare we got medium well. The best thing about it was the Maui sauce, the steak wasn't anything special. It was ok, but not for $50. My mom got the chicken. She said it was prepared well but it lacked flavor. The best thing about our meal was the mashed potatoes, they were pretty good. J. Alexander's just opened and we have been looking forward to checking it out. We went for dinner with the family and it didn't disappoint! Loved the ambiance. It's a nice change for the area. Lights also dimmed for dinner service, which was really nice! You can go "dressy casual" or dress up for a nice date night. My personal recommendation would be to not go too casual as we saw someone leaving after their meal in sweatpants and it really doesn't fit the ambiance and looked a bit out of place. I could see the bar area could get a little noisy, but nothing crazy, the dining room was nice and quiet but not overly quiet. It was actually perfect for us. We were greeted with a warm welcome. James was our server. He was training someone but that didn't affect his service or attention to our table or to any details of our meals. Both he and the person he was training were very welcoming, friendly, and service was spot on. We started with the spinach dip/salsa and chips and a sushi roll that James recommended, the Scorpion Roll. While I don't eat sushi, those who did said it was very good! Between our table, some of us ordered the prime rib, the burgers, Caesar salad, and a few extra sides, desserts, and a few drinks from the bar. Everything was cooked perfectly, as we ordered it. Everything came out in order, was hot and fresh, and the quality of meats, great overall. Desserts ordered were Creme Brûlée and the chocolate cake. The Creme Brûlée was a nice portion and the chocolate cake is more dense and more fudge-like. Both are definitely shareable between a few people to enjoy a few bites of each. My son-in-law ordered a Manhattan and it came with a sidecar, which was a nice touch. If you're looking for someplace to go for a lunch or dinner, date night or as a group, I'd highly recommend checking it out. I would NOT recommend this restaurant for small children who are not well behaved. It's just NOT kid friendly, which we can appreciate. Unfortunately for us, there were 2 small children a few booths away and the parents let their kids scream and run around freely. Thankful they were leaving shortly after we arrived. Note, this is NOT the place to do that. If you're going to bring small children, please do your part and parent them and ensure they know to sit on their bottoms and enjoy their meals. This was our third visit to this restaurant. The first time was when they first opened and the staff and service were excellent. My husband loved his food but I had the prime rib and it was awful I couldn't even eat it. We returned tonight and the service wasn't good. Our server was being trained but had a gal with him. My husband ordered the fish and received two very small pieces. For a $55 meal there should have been more. My steak was over seasoned and I couldn't eat it because there was so much salt on it. We were offered a free dessert after the server talked with the manager so we ordered one and she told us we could take it to go if we wanted but we said we would eat it there but sure enough it was brought to us all packed up to go. Drinks were empty and no one asked if we wanted another. No manager stopped by after we told them the meal wasn't great. For a upper scale place the service and food were below average. Our family took us to J Alexander's for our 75th birthday celebrations. We were greeted by the hostess and wished a happy birthday before we were even seated. Our waiter was wonderful and took such very good care of us all evening long. The restaurant was beautiful. We all ordered different meals and each meal was delicious. The crabcakes were outstanding made with large lump crab and a delicious sauce. My grandson enjoyed the ribs and my granddaughter loved her sushi. They brought out two different desserts for us to celebrate our birthdays. I must say the carrot cake was outstanding and so was the Keylime pie. Our birthday celebrations were wonderful. I must agree with some of the less than stellar reviews of this restaurant. We've given them a try three times over the course of a few months. The staff seem rather immature, largely inattentive, and often seem to be more focused on casual group chat with each other than the patrons. We experienced long waits between ambivalent server interactions. The menu is very limited, and the food quality is just so-so given the higher price points. The atmosphere is sterile and spartan, like an upscale Denny's. Overall, it's a shame really, as this part of town could use some higher end establishments. Not recommended. read more
