This was our destination for a family birthday event, and happily it ended up being very special! I wish I could deduct half a star for the runaround when I was trying to make the reservation, because someone on the other end of the line simply didn't know what they were doing. First time I called: two rings, then the call was dropped. Called again: two rings, went straight to hold music, then the call was dropped again. Called back a third time, thinking this is your last chance! I went back to hold music, but someone did pick up and the reservation was secured. When I inquired about the dress code she said they don't have one, but put me on hold to confirm and came back to say "no muscle tshirts" (no problem in December in Chicago!) On the day of our reservation we arrived on time and parked around the corner. It's not entirely evident that this place was a church from the outside, but yes, take time to look at the stained glass windows in the main room, especially if like us you are seated elsewhere. We were put in a smaller room off the main hall with a faux fireplace and lots of windows (so perhaps don't check your coat as it was a bit chilly initially; our waiter turned up the heat at some point). This placement was fine for about 2/3 of our meal as we were alone, until the place started filling up and a loud party was also seated in the small space (honestly people, learn to modulate your voices). The whole place is a bit dim so the menus are actually lit internally! That was a new one on me. We also had informative and friendly service from our waiter Todd, who had a genial manner and a penchant for Scooby-Doo-era slang like "far out" and "groovy". The food was fantastic. Everything from the bread with honey butter to the cocktails (my Brazilian cosmo made with mango vodka was particularly special) to the entrees to the desserts was excellent. I had the petit filet topped with two plump shrimp in a scampi butter sauce; I love a filet but sometimes they can be underdone because they are so thick, but this was perfectly medium. The twice baked potato and asparagus were also great accompaniments. My brother enjoyed his jambalaya, my mom raved about the crab cakes, and my dad (not the biggest chicken fan) loved the bourbon glazed chicken skewers, and kept praising the mushrooms that were included among the veggies on the skewers. For dessert we had the petite creme brulees, a nice way to round out a delicious meal and not too big. There were actually Christmas carolers wandering around while we ate, which was an interesting touch, considering that this space is rather tight (it looks deceptively large because of the high ceilings, but weaving between tables was tough, and at one point I was nearly hip-checked into a pillar by an agressive old lady who gave me a rather bitchy "excuuuse me!" -- excuse you, indeed, madam; there was nowhere for me to go!) At any rate, the music was novel. All told, the excellence of the food and the service smooth out the few frayed edges, so I am rounding up to 5 stars. Love the atmosphere at this place. Turning an old church into a restaurant just gives it a whole different vibe. They have a patio section on the side, and that street is closed with more seating in the summer. Prior to us sitting at our table, we sat at the bar. It was a nice little area, and the vibe was just right. To my surprise, they had Zombie Ice by 3 Floyd's on tap. For dinner, they serve complimentary bread and butter. The butter had a unique sweetness that was quite good. For an appetizer we had the fried brie. I personally thought the brie needed more flavor, but the others enjoyed it. I had to get the Parmesan crusted Salomon, because that seemed to be their specialty based off of all the reviews on Yelp. I have to say, it was good and I was happy with my choice. Next time though, I will get the lamb chops. My wife had the crab cakes. She said they were good, but not the best she ever had. The service at both the bar and table were both very friendly and attentive. If you are looking for a new place to try. I would highly suggest this place when in Wheaton. I will be back to try the lamb chops and enjoy the atmosphere again. read more

Food was a disappointment! I ordered a $45 medium rare steak with a baked potato and asparagus. The steak was dry and the asparagus was barely cooked. Service was lacking. We had 8 in our party and the plates were brought out 2 at a time. It was awkward waiting for everyone to be served. My husband had to flag down the waitress to order another drink. So I must say, I'm pretty disappointed... Placed an order through their site directly which included 3 entrees and a few sides. Delivery was selected due to having to work and after an hour of waiting, I get a text saying order was cancelled. I was very confused because I received a confirmation email. Their website was forcing me to select certain things as "on the side". So I also spoke to a member of the restaurant right after placing it to let them know I wanted everything the normal way. She confirmed my order looked okay and everything was fine. Yet It was still cancelled an hour later because I was told the order was "confusing". Seems the restaurant needs to work on their site for orders, so just be careful if going to place an online order with them. It's disappointing they made every excuse why I wasn't contacted sooner but it is what it is. read more

We celebrated my mother's 80th and 85th birthdays here. The food is amazing and service is impeccable. I've been coming to this restaurant for many years and it's at the top of my list for favorite restaurants. The ambiance is so interesting with the high ceilings and stained glass windows. I visited the restaurant with my family. The place was elegant and in a good location. The service was a disappointment, let me explain, from three plates order two were either done wrong or the seafood was uncooked. We waited for the seafood to be cooked correctly but it was still raw. A very impressive building but they need to get their act together. My daughter asked for an Espresso and a decaf coffee was served but an American coffee was well served. I had eaten in Europe, Latin America, Asia Minor and Israel . Really good food with an awesome atmosphere in Wheaton. If you happen to be visiting this suburb, head on over to the Hale St. and check this place out. Not entirely sure about the history of this building, but with the stained glass windows, choir loft and the city being home to Wheaton College, I'd say it was a former church. We came here with family early on a Friday evening. A reservation was made the day before, but it appeared we wouldn't have needed one given the 5:30 arrival time. Staff were friendly and we were seated at a nice corner table. The table itself was in a great spot, but the canned light (I believe) that was located right above my head was extremely unflattering. I'd say most ladies of a certain age would dislike this as they're stuffing their face with food. On the other hand, it really brought to light (ha) was my food looked like. This was also my first time opening a light-up menu. We ordered several appetizers - the calamari and shrimp/watermelon salad were very good. I didn't try the beef skewers, but the people I was with appeared to enjoy them. Complimentary bread loaf (first one) was very dry and hard. Subsequent loaves appeared to be softer, though I didn't try them either. My husband and I split the crab cakes entrée. I'm glad. He could barely finish his half so it would have gone to waste. Hubs also ordered a side of mac 'n cheese that was mild, but tasty. I ended up eating more of this side than he did. One of the other guests we were with ordered the prime rib that was on special that night. He took most of it home, but commented that it was a very fatty piece of meat. I took a piece of the peach bread pudding home for dessert. It was very good (a brioche like bread) and extremely dense. I couldn't finish it. Boo. This isn't the cheapest restaurant in Wheaton, so know that ahead of time. The very friendly owner and another employee (maybe the GM?) came around to say 'hello' while we were there. I had the pleasure of dining at this wonderful restaurant, well actually outside in their huge tent that was set up during the pandemic. The food and spirits were delicious. We shared several appetizers and I had their tilapia entrée. I was drawn to this place because it shares the same name as my sister and the fact that I have never heard of anyone with that name besides her. This is the second time I've been at Ivy. The first time was about 8 years ago. The experiences were very different, safe to say now is much better. For a weekday night, it was very busy. This location used to be a church, so you can imagine how beautiful the decor is! The service was fantastic. Ruth is a patient and kind server! She knows her menu items and was fantastic. They have great steaks and chops at a decent price. The seafood selection is excellent and they have poultry options. My family ordered steaks and I ordered the tilapia (I was steamed out from the week). The crab crusted tilapia was delicious. However, they put a bunch of cream sauce in the fish, which was great, but maybe a little too much. On the good side, it was cooked perfectly, it was a hearty portion and most important, it was delicious! Their dessert was great, we ordered tiramisu. It was a tad too sweet, but it was delicious. The prices aren't exorbitant at all. In fact, o expected to spend a lot more than I did. It's a great restaurant and I look forward to going back. read more

My Gorgeous Blonde date and I really enjoyed date night here. The place was bustling with a reunion private party using the whole street tent, and a full house on the patio and inside. Despite the crowd the hostess, waiter and table helpers were fantastic. This level of good service in typically understaffed restaurants seems rare these days. And the food was fantastic. Scallop special with mushrooms and grains, topped with a sautéed lemon, along with a beet salad for me. Truffle burger for Blondie. Cocktails and wine were terrific. My manhattans a bit light on the pour but may be my tastes from heavy pours at home remain strong. Passed on desserts, which looked amazing. $150 included solid tip, so fairly priced for a five star gourmet meal. We enjoy the other joynts nearby too but Ivy Once again impressed the date. read more

After reading the reviews, I was so excited to try this place. First impression as I walked in... Way way way too loud. There was a ton of business men congregated at the bar right as you walk in. It was quite distracting, even disturbing. The positive was an impressive stained glass window that you could see upon entering. Cloth tablecloths. High cathedral ceilings. Very nice ambiance. Waited too long for a server to attend to us. And once he did, he was not very cordial. No smile, no warmth. He came with bread and butter (butter was delicious). We were not given a carafe of water that we noticed on every other table. We had to ask the bus boy for one. Also, our drinks were not refilled for quite some time. Our server did become more attentive as the meal proggresed. For our appetizer, we ordered the Asian wings. We were not given any plates to eat them off so I stopped our server as he was walking by to let him know. He proceeded to grab them off a neighbouring table. Anyway... The sauce was overly salty and meat tasted burnt. The dark soy needed to be tempered with lemon or something sweet. We did tell our server that we thought them overly salty but he didn't do anything about it. We both ordered a cup of clam chowder soup. Very watery but quite flavorful. Although the soup was good, for the size of the cup... It was overpriced at $4. For our entrees, I ordered tilapia with lump crab. It was served with roasted potatoes which were the best part of the meal... Tender and buttery. The tilapia was good... Just okay. My hubbie ordered the 8 oz ribeye. Ivy restaurant has an amazing staff very polite hostess. Our server was very helpful and very nice to us. My friends took me to celebrate my birthday here. I had a hamburger with fries it was very delicious. My friends had a chicken wrap and the other gal had a salmon salad with asparagus. The server told me to save room for dessert she brought me. A crème brûlée with a lit candle and sang the bday song. Over all I had a fantastic time the owner came to our table to talk to my friend. I took my wife and son to Ivy tonight. We were looking forward to having a drink and some appetizers outside at the bar. Our server, Suzi, clearly didn't want us there. We ordered appetizers, and she frowned, telling us the kitchen was closing in 15 minutes. Then we ordered drinks, and she was frustrated about that too. It was really unexpected. I've lived in Wheaton for decades and we eat out all the time at Wheaton restaurants. But we've never been treated this way by a Wheaton server. We will not be back. Ivy is a really unique and beautiful restaurant. I've been here a couple times. They have lots of nice things happening, from the physical space, to the service, to the food. They offer indoor or outdoor seating in their courtyard. They also have one of the most awesome things I've seen in a restaurant in a while: The menus are like a Kindle paperwhite, in that they are backlit. It's wonderful! They're able to keep the beautiful, dimly-lit ambiance of the place whilst also making sure people can actually read the menus without difficulty. I've never seen this kind of menu in a restaurant but I hope it catches on soon. My first visit here I had the soup de jour, cream of chicken lemon, which was delicious. They bring warm bread prior to the meal, served with some compound butter, for which the soup was a nice accompaniment. They offer free valet! Even on a Saturday night! A quick caveat: My first visit was on a Saturday in June or July, and I'd expect that the valet is not available daily. I visited in September, and Hale is completely torn up for construction, so I'm not even sure if they're offering valet on weekends at this time--but this second visit was on a Wednesday, so it's possible. Luckily there is some street parking on surrounding streets. The Metra station is within walking distance so that's a great option if you're heading here. The service was great. Just attentive enough to not be interrupting all the time, but there to help just as when we needed it. Our meals have been delicious. The first time I had the savory chicken, and my partner had the mahi special. He said it was perfectly prepared, something I'll have to take his word on since I don't eat fish. The savory chicken was great, with a bit of spice since it's blackened, and the peach added a nice sweet contrast. I'm not a huge fan of the polenta fries but that's just a personal preference, not an issue with its preparation or anything. When I visited on my birthday I tried the Honey Glazed Stuffed Chicken Breast, and that was a fantastic dish. We were slightly disappointed in my friend's meal, though. He ordered the grilled chicken bourbon skewers, and when ordering, he asked whether they came with tomato since that sort of thing often does (there's no mention of tomato in the menu description). He was assured there was no tomato involved and it was strictly what was on the menu, so it was a surprise when there were several tomatoes on the skewers. Another employee brought our meals from the kitchen, so when the server came back it was pointed out and she said she'd get it fixed. The problem is that it came back within about two minutes, so it seems clear they simply pulled everything out and removed the tomatoes. He was never asked if he was allergic to tomatoes (and luckily he's not), but he does have a very strong aversion to them. And since he made his concerns clear at the time of ordering, I think the appropriate response would have been to make the dish fresh. It put a bit of a damper on the birthday dinner, unfortunately. One of the unusual features of this restaurant is that they have an elevator to get to the second floor, which I very much appreciate. The stairs are tight and a little steep, so they could be tricky even if one wasn't disabled, and some of the seating is upstairs, as are the bathrooms. The desserts are great, and they had my favorite, creme brûlée. Not that I'm trying to change their mind, but I was surprised that the price for the desserts was so cheap--I expected them to be much more "mini" than they were. I've recommended Ivy to a coworker who lives in Lombard, because I think this is a place she's really enjoy with her husband, or with friends for dinner and drinks. And though we had the hiccup with the order a few weeks ago, I'd like to come back at some point. Besides the food being good, the space is amazing. It was once a church, and it retains much of that beautiful architecture, such as the stained glass window and arches! It is an inspired space in which to have a lovely meal, and I do hope to be back. read more

My husband and I went to Ivy to celebrate our anniversary. We first sat outside at the bar to get a drink but the bartender never waited on us, she just stared at the computer. There were only four other people at the bar. We decided to go to the inside bar to receive service. We found out that there was only one bartender for the entire establishment! The "bartender" outside couldn't serve drinks for some reason. The inside bartender was serving people at the inside bar, at the restaurant, and had to run in and out of the restaurant to serve the outside bar, too! read more

Cracked black pepper and salt made them good alone but the sauces were amazing. We love the Bourbon glaze, but there was also a delicate mustard and a bbq. I had to have the soup, creamy onion.my spouse had chicken noodle, not a flavorful as the onion, but it was very popular. Our main meals were spectacular. A rare filet with shrimp, mashed potatoes and asparagus. Short ribs in a tomato base over risotto. We rounded up with a cheesecake and salted caramel Gelato. Highly recommend Ivy and we are looking gorward to returning to try the burger and other items. Kind service made it all great. read more

Beautiful reclaimed church, friendly service and some quite good food. Ricotta appetizer was underwhelming - the ricotta was pretty good but the bread was nothing special (nor was the honey). Tilapia with crabcake and lobster sauce was delicious. Crabcake was a bit squishy, though, and so was the tilapia. Subbed in asparagus with no fuss and it was well cooked. We went here for lunch after our wedding at the courthouse. The service was wonderful and one of the managers even came over to congratulate us. The complimentary bread was fresh and served with butter. We ordered the crab cake grilled cheese lunch special, meatloaf, lamb chops, beef sandwich, and parmesan crusted salmon. Everything was so fresh, hot, and the flavors were amazing! Everyone loved their dishes and our taste buds were very satisfied. They also gave us a complimentary key lime creme brulee for our wedding and it was soooo good! It definitely satisfied everyone's sweet tooth at the table. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. This was a church prior as you can tell and it is absolutely beautiful with the high ceilings, stained glass windows, fireplace, upstairs that looks out to to the dining room, etc. They had a beautiful patio outside that we can't wait to go to when it warms up. Couldn't have had a better experience. My boyfriend and I went for dinner last Saturday night. Even though downtown Wheaton is totally torn up valet was easy to get to. Unbeknownst to me my boyfriend had called ahead to make some plans with the owners. When we arrived we had a bottle of champagne brought to the table. After our glasses were poured my boyfriend pulled out the most beautiful ring and proposed! The wait staff and owners were so sweet! The owners came over to congratulate us and give us their best wishes. We beyond appreciate them helping us celebrate our engagement. We will be back again very soon! read more
