Stopped in after a recommendation and was greeted with a friendly staff and crowd. The menu here stuck out, both the bourbon and food menu are well above average. The shrimp and grits are the best I've had in Illinois. I wanted to try three or four other dishes as well but settled on the shrimp and wow what a surprise. A+

Great experience. Audrey our server was nice, helpful and gave a friendly demeanor. The food is well prepared, plated and absolutely delicious. The vibe is intimate, natural and slightly moody. Perfect for datenight. Hubs and I shared bites of the arancini(chefs kiss), seared tuna salad (fresh), bison bolognase(damn!). The beverages quenched and the selection was thorough. They have some hidden gem spirits behind the bar too, particularly the brown stuff. We will be back, the bar looks like cozy too!

Hubby and I stopped at Maize & Mash for a late lunch today. Always good food and cocktails at this restaurant. We chose to sit at the bar. The bartender provided good service and was engaging. We started out with bourbon drinks. I had the special this month called These Aren't Pillows, which a percentage went to Toys for Tots. Hubby had an old fashioned and also the Nashville hot chicken sandwich topped with an egg with truffle fries for lunch. I had a salmon salad with bacon, pears and parmesan cheese dressed with a rosemary garlic vinaigrette. So yum! I've been here a few times and always enjoy what I get to eat and drink. I definitely recommend it.

Excellent service. Delightful food, including great appetizers and perfectly cooked steaks. We ate upstairs and there was a game on, but it didn't feel obtrusive to us during our dinner. This is an easy place to grab a bite, even with a slightly bigger group.

Food: all the food was delicious. I came with three other girlfriends so we could try each other's dishes. One order the shrimp and grits, the other chicken Shawarma, another a steak, while I ordered the Gumbo. Everything was delicious! All my friends completed their meals. I was pretty close but the portions were large enough to share if needed. 5/5 Service: we did have reservations for the restaurant and good thing since it was pretty packed from the tables to the bar. I made reservations online, if you are going on a busy weekend night like us. The service, however, was a little slow. We arrived at 6:50 and stayed until 9:30 due to the server not checking in on us as much as we would have liked. I didn't mind too much since we didn't have solid plans afterwards but if you are planning another reservation after this spot--I would say give yourself a solid 2.5 to 3 hours there. 4/5 Ambiance: beautiful spot. I like the mix of being a little upscale but kind of like a sports bar because they do have tvs on the right wall. Smaller space, but moody inside. They do have outdoor sitting but it was limited. 5/5 Overall: 14/15. I would go here again!

First time here and can't wait to get back. Bourbon drinks are amazing. Food menu unique and great flavors everything so fresh.

This spot could not be more my speed! I visited on a Wednesday afternoon with a party of 6. The inside is dark and moody with a metal ceiling, dark paints, rustic wood tables, and industrial lighting. The menu offers a mix of elevated bar food and bbq favorites. Their drink menu is bourbon strong but offers variety for the vodka, gin, etc drinkers. Our group had two rounds of drinks to try quite a few which was nice. My favorites were the Missing Summer (smokey, bright, spice finish), Season With Your Heart (fruity, sweet, not too gin-like), and the Old Fashioned. For bites, we also shared quite a bit. I loved the Arancini (slight heat finish, savory, soft), Cauliflower Tots (sauce is separate on the plate), Cheese Curds (surprisingly loved the sauce with this), and do NOT skip out on the Truffle Fry Side! The pricing was a bit of a premium and they do not offer a happy hour nor weekday deals. I definitely recommend sharing to try a little of a lot. I would certainly come back to enjoy more as their drink and food menu rotates! Note: We were charged a $15 outside dessert fee for bringing in cupcakes.

    Their seasonal cocktail for February

Maize + Mash is fun spot with a nice ambiance, good food and drink and friendly service. The decor is whimsical (see if you can spot the painting of actor Alan Rickman as an army general when you walk in). The space is nice and spacious but still managed to feel cozy. We started with cocktails and I got the February cocktail which had conversations hearts in it. Despite how it sounds it wasn't overly sweet and was a fun drink. For our starter we got the poutine which was so delicious. The portions are very generous here so I got a cup of the gumbo with truffle fries and that was plenty for me. My companions burger, fish and chips and grilled cheese all looked great too. Would definitely recommend and would be happy to return.

Unbelievable! We wandered in for lunch and were delighted to find this cute bistro. The staff was welcoming and the place was hopping! I cannot put into words how wonderful the food was! I ordered the shrimp and grits. It intrigued me as they were served with pickled peppers and a brown butter sauce. My mouth is watering even thinking about it! My friend had a sandwich and fries. Very good fries! The server was sweet and accommodating. Service was on the slow side, but given the bistro was full, the bartender and her were the only front if the house employees, we gave them grace. They were even bussing the tables! A must stop when in downtown Glen Ellyn.

For the better part of 3 years, the only significant place I associated with Glen Ellyn was Common Good Cocktail House (amazing for drinks if you've never been!). Typically after drinks, my wife and I would look up restaurants in the area, and while Maize + Mash always pops up on that list, we've somehow managed to always choose something different, at least up until our most recent visit. Shareables: Short Rib Poutine (Chef's Pick) Mussels Entrees: Salmon Salad Mushroom + Truffle Pasta (not pictured) Louisiana Seafood Gumbo (Chef's Pick) I like how Maize + Mash has a curated menu without an overwhelming amount of options and has one selected "Chef's Pick" for each section (appetizer, salad, burger/sandwiches, and entrees). We ended up picking two of these Chef's choice options as indicated above. To sum it up, almost everything was fantastic. The short rib poutine was as expected. The mussels were really large and satisfying. I didn't have the salmon salad but the two guests that did said it was delicious and properly cooked. The mushroom + truffle pasta was exactly what I would want in a well made pasta dish. My only gripe was unfortunately with the seafood gumbo. Both my friend and I each ordered our own seafood gumbo entree and ended up sharing the same sentiment in that it was just too salty. Bear in mind though that gumbos are not my favorite thing. I knew going into it, it would be a risk and that over saltiness is a common complaint I have with this type of dish. However, the "Chef's Pick" selection put me over the fence and I tried it anyways. Unfortunately, it didn't change my mind about gumbos. But because everything else was so good, I would gladly come back. Also a quick shout-out to the service - one of the food runners brought out the wrong salad to our table without us realizing it. When they caught their mistake, they gave us the correct salad on top of the mistake dish. Props to them for that!

    Gumbo

Was really impressed with the food here! Some intriguing menu options mixed in with some classics. Would certainly come back here. Lunch service was packed on a Wednesday which was encouraging to see. The gumbo had a nice generous portion. Good flavor (a tad salty) but I'd still order it again. The Mac n cheese was a great side choice for the short rib grilled cheese. The short rib was super tender and very juicy. Job well done, Maize + Mash!

Shrimp & Grits to go, husband was THRILLED
    Katie L.

We visited Maize + Mash several times (once for dinner with kids and family, once for cocktails at the bar, just women) over a weekend in Glen Ellyn. Two different experiences and both were excellent! Servers are incredibly kind and attentive. The menu is diverse, portions are large, and YUM how I appreciate a vinaigrette selection like their salads have. Music is nice but not too loud. This is a great place, I wouldn't be surprised if they chose to expand to neighboring towns!!

The bar staff is always friendly, quick and attentive, and it's always very clean. But for the life of me, I cannot figure out what goes on with the food selection in this place I've been coming here for probably about 10 years and they have had probably as many themes. Between a palace of bacon and then not and then partially bacon and then bacon and vegan, and then just vegan and regular pub fare. It's close to the house so I will occasionally stop in for a beer and something after work. Usually, I will get a chicken Caesar wrap because that's pretty much impossible to screw up, but once in a while, I will have a taste for a burger and after all, this is a bar...and I've had bad bar burgers at bars all across the country, they usually are at least serviceable. Not here. Each time I order one I remember why I go back to the chicken Caesar wrap. Newest exhibit being their new Smash-burger. I selected the pretzel bun so I knew it was not going to be a typical smash burger but when the patties come out like gray school cafeteria burgers without a trace of smash or crisp to them, I'm not sure whoever created this menu has ever met the kitchen staff. Generally a Smash-burger should be a homogenous congealed mass held together by good will and melted cheese. I cut this thing in half and it fell over like a Jenga tower. The buns are consistently pretty stale. I can't imagine if burgers are this much of a gamble...how are entrees like pot roast? Who is even ordering enough of these things for it to be fresh when it seems like everyone's getting sliders and nachos.

They had me at beef tallow fries, I had to get a sandwich. Our friends love the smash burgers and that is what my wife got, I was in a different mood and went with the Alabama white BBQ sauce chicken sandwich. The fries are pretty great, perfect double fried, just like I like them. The Chicken sandwich was underwhelming, it tasted good everything was good about it but it was this kinda small, fast food looking sandwich. Plus it was like $18, for that I need more. These days with all the big impressive chicken sandwiches around, it left me very underwhelmed and disappointed. The other issue was my wife's massive impressive looking burger across the table, sure didn't help. Her burger was messy, juicy and very good. Park on the street or in a small lot adjacent to the building. The beer selection is fantastic, a pint ($8) never disappoints although I usually lean towards a Hefeweizen or pilsner with my meal. Yeah yeah, I know this is a WHISKEY bar, but yours truly doesn't do the brown liquor.....bad experience with Jägermeister as a kid. For appetizers, the cheese curds ($14) are pricey but oh-so-worth it. They come with a cilantro aioli and we get an order of these every single visit. The cauliflower popcorn ($11) is also a very worthy choice for starters; roasted and seasoned cauliflower florets are served with a sumptuous clarified butter. Their house NWB Burger ($16.50) is a busy affair, with pork belly, bbq sauce, onion straws and cheese curds on a pretzel bun. The Big Jer ($15.25) is a much simpler yet equally stellar burger with 2x4oz patties, lettuce, tomato, and Merkt's cheddar spread served with a pickle spear. I recently tried the Suribachi ($15.50) and it blew my mind. A 1/2lb patty is lightly fried in tempura batter, then topped with pepperjack cheese, wasabi coleslaw and sriracha on a brioche bun. Next time, I'm giving the El Toro a shot (pickled habaneros, corn guac). My wife loves the pork belly mac ($16), a good portion of cheesy cavatappi pasta with crispy pork belly. Their Cubano ($15) is solid and the Taylor Street panini ($15) is a tasty Italian grinder, with prosciutto, salami, provolone, lettuce, tomato and olive spread on focaccia bread. NWB's homemade chips are amazing, I always opt for them instead of fries (which are also great). Bread = 5+ Circuses = 4.5 Service has been generally fine, but last visit it took a long time for our server to come by initially. The inside of this converted house is somewhat cramped so if the weather allows, I suggest dining 'al fresco'. Their outdoor patio definitely passes the vibe check. I honestly can't decide whose doughnuts are better, Empire in Naperville or Next Whiskey Bar's. It might be a tie! In any case, we ALWAYS end a meal here with the fried doughnuts ($11) that come with a heavenly whiskey caramel sauce for dipping. * TL;DR * In my mind, NWB stands for "Nirvana, With Burgers". Everything we've gotten here has exceeded expectations. Cheese curds, cauliflower popcorn, pork belly pasta, doughnuts and of course burgers all stand out. I would get the Suribachi again in a HEARTBEAT. The ambiance is ideal for date night and small groups, and with a small dining area that fills up fast, come early or expect a wait. Next Whiskey Bar is one of my favorite restaurants in the western suburbs, I highly recommend them.
