Came here on a double date with some good friends. The space is festive without being chaotic. Fun Latin decor with a clean minimalist approach that keeps the energy lively without overwhelming you. Great date spot, great group spot. We went full tapas mode and shared everything across the table, which is absolutely the right way to do this. The trio of salsas was a strong opener. The smoky Al Morita was the clear winner for me, though all three brought something distinct to the table. The Patatas Bravas were well seasoned and the sunny side egg on top added a richness that elevated the whole dish. Wanted a little more crisp on the potatoes but honestly a minor note on an otherwise solid plate. Tacos were a mixed bag. The Al Carnitas fell flat, the pork belly felt underseasoned and the lime overpowered everything else. The Al Fundido though was a genuine standout. Perfectly cooked butterfly shrimp, pickled onions, melty cheese. Every component earning its place on the tortilla. The Al Chulo got solid marks from the table but could use something bright to cut through the richness. The Chicken Empanadas were a highlight of the night. Shatteringly crispy, loaded with flavor, and the slaw alongside them was exactly the right call. The Al Mango Salad was fresh and balanced but leaned sweet and desperately wanted a crunchy element and maybe a little heat to round it out. Dessert delivered a split decision. The Al Platanito Frito was the surprise of the evening. Sweet, sour, bright, crunchy. A perfect final bite. The churros were perfectly fine and nothing more. Service was attentive and our server steered us well with recommendations. One heads up: this is not a casual weeknight cheap eat. It is tapas priced for the experience, so come hungry, come with a group, and come ready to spend. Worth it. The Plainfield location is next on our list and we cannot wait. read more

I stopped in for lunch with a friend and we both enjoyed our time here. Altiro is designed and decorated beautifully. It's fun, sophisticated and elegant. Dress up or dress down, you'll fit right in here. This is a pricier establishment, however, it's not as pricey as Chicago. Service throughout was perfect. Our server checked in just the right amount of times and food was timed out well. I had the enchiladas verdes which also came with rice and scrambled eggs. This was DELICIOUS. Everything went well together and the portion was enough for me to finish and keep me satisfied. read more

Love this place!! First time in and everything was fantastic, service, good, comfy chairs at the table. Everything dishes was packed with flavor and our server made the best recommendations; they have a few different variations of shrimp tacos and the ones he picked for us were great!! The only thing that was off was the smell, the overall restaurant had a smell of essential oils or something you would find at a day spa, it was a little overbearing and I would have like to smell the actual food. Will be back to work my way thru the menu! read more

Cute place and creative menu. The high back chairs are comfortable and the multi-pattern chairs are cozy. Zardetta Spritz $12 Papa Brava $10.50 - These potato logs are crispy on the outside and smooth on the inside, covered in delicious sauce and topped with a fried egg. Chilango Tacos (4) $18.50 - The skirt steak is cooked well and the crispy shoestring potatoes provide a pop of crunchiness but not a lot of flavor. Fundido Tacos (4) $18.50 - These garlic shrimp and pickled red onions make a good combination, but I prefer other protein in taco form. It was easy to pay using the inKind app. read more

A girlfriend and I came in to support the restaurant during Wheaton restaurant week. It was a Tuesday night and we were 1 of 2 parties the entire 2 hours we were there. We had to bring it up to the waiter and he walked us through the 4/$44 options. We opted to select an app (guacamole) a side (Elotito) tacos (Fundido) and an entree (Alambre). The chips were fantastic! Guacamole was 'good' but nothing stood out about them. There were some great elements to the shrimp tacos (Fundido) - the pickled onions & cilantro-lime oil. However the amount of cheese on the taco was so overwhelming it felt like a quesadilla. The Alambre had the most flavor, but again way too much cheese. I would re-order this dish and ask for very light cheese. It had similar set-up to fajitas where you can build it on a tortilla shell with salsa, o&p, and steak + chorizo. Honestly the deal was amazing, we couldn't even finish the 4 plates between us. We thought the restaurant was adorable, and would probably come back to enjoy sitting at the bar or when it's nice out again. As others have said, the smell on the inside was a little off-putting. One other thing is I think the cocktails need some more variety. All of them (including the margarita) had fresh OJ and I was looking for something a little less sweet. read more

Ambiance & decor is comfortable with a twist of fun. We love the Guac Trio, Altiro Tacos (tilapia) and the Al Salmonjillo Tacos (salmon), and Al Fundido (shrimp w/ cheese). Yumm! Great flavors; Great service every time we're there. read more

Came here for mother's day dinner and really enjoyed it. Our waitress was very kind and they were offering a complimentary mimosa to celebrate the day. All of our tacos were good and the guac trio was very tasty, only note was there was way more guac than chips. I had a pineapple drink that had a tajin ice cube and it was very tasty and flavorful. The outdoor seating as well is always a fun vibe and the inside is nice as well. Probably the best latin food in downtown Wheaton! read more

A favorite date spot for us, Altiro has the best salmon tacos ever. We always get friendly staff, and the drinks are fresh and crisp. The gentle lighting and selection of music make this spot the perfect romantic dinner read more

It was snowing like mad outside when we swept into Altiro on Valentine's Day; fortunately they had a great little table for the two for us! I made a beeline for their magical cocktail, called Al Pepino... Spicy and smoky, rimmed with Tajin and festooned with a cucumber slice... Just divine. "Fresh muddled cucumber, fresh lime, cilantro, jalapeño infused vodka, & organic agave nectar," the menu says... I say--do not miss it! Because it was Valentine's Day (I think), they also proffered a festive red drink in a wine glass; a mix of rosé and grenadine. It was on the house and a fun way to start the experience!! I've been here several times, and the trio of guacamole never fails. Three scoops featuring 3 different flavors, served with flaky, freshly made tortilla chips. Always delicious and a great starter to share. The service was impeccable and we had a wonderful time. My only quibble is that the tacos were not quite as good as I'd hoped. The waiter recommended the barbacoa, but the meat was cooked in little cubes instead of shredded, so it was not tender, and arrived lukewarm. The sauces and toppings of cilantro, onions & roasted arbol salsa, were excellent, so that boosted the dish. My husband enjoyed his chilango tacos, too. All in all a beautiful night out, great service, awesome drinks and good food. We will be back! read more

Service extremely slow, took 30 mins to get 3 Margs and a 1 Beer. Guacamole does not come with chips so have to order separate. Empanadas are the size of a walnut. Far too expensive for slow bar service and tiny portions. Do not recommend. read more

Ambiance is great. Well decorated with a variety of seating. Service is also very attentive. We came by for a late lunch/snack so I didn't want to order a ton. We tried the Al ceviche and Al mejillon (mussels). Because I only order two items, it's hard to judge the quality of the food. The ceviche was horrible. I love ceviche and I've had ceviche in Peru so I have a fairly good idea of what good ceviche should be. The tilapia was cut into slivers rather than cubes and the fish meat seemed to have been left in lime juice for so long that the fish has been completely cooked to a dry, tough state. The lime was so infused into the fish that every bite was a shock of licking a lime. The fish slivers were packed so tightly together into the mold that you had to forcefully push the pieces apart. The ratio of chip and guac to dry, overcooked fish was not enough to offset the horribleness of the acid cooked fish. For this dish, I would give a 0/5. The mussels dish was so much better!! The sauce was like a warm tomato soup. The mussels were cleaned well and easy to get out of the shell. The meat was still tender and the dish came out piping hot. The little pieces of garlic bread were lovely. I do wish they gave more of the bread. The ratio of bread to sauce was nowhere near enough. This I would give a 4.5/5, taking off for the insufficient amount of bread. I am giving this place a 4/5 because I feel like there is potential and still plenty to try on the menu. The ceviche though was a nightmare so I would avoid that if I ever went back. read more

Pricy, and mid food. 18 bucks for chilaquiles with no meat?? Small portions too. Tacos were tiny w half a bowl of soup

The food, drinks and setting here are consistently excellent. Altiro's ability to put together a memorable experience with top level food is the reason my wife and I continue to return. The staff and management are also noticeably sync. I highly recommend their Margaritas, The Chicken Poblano Tacos and The Al Chilango Tacos. Plus the Salsa Trio with chips is a great starter. read more

Food - our table ordered soups to start with. We all chose the poblano who is a nice, creamy soup with cream and cranberries on top. Soup itself is delicious. Very flavorful and has a nice kick to it without it being spicy at all. It comes with a nice soft toast on the side. For my main meal, I had their special Altiro tacos made with tilapia, mango salsa and greens on top with a lovely mango puree. And a nice homemade strawberry lemonade to quench my thirst. Service - food comes out fairly quick and staff are cordial and professional and often come around to check in on us. Ambiance - very nice, cozy, but spacious. chairs are comfortable. lighting is simple. Nice place for a romantic dinner or business meeting. It can a bit loud depending on how many people are in. Definitely worth a come back to try their other dishes read more

Altiro Latin Fusion/Wheaton was a lovely surprise. The Latin roots were authentic while creative twists elevated each dish. Came here for tapas on an afternoon. I got the mussels and ceviche Quality- the ceviche was too heavy on the lime. I couldn't taste anything but tartness. The shrimp was dry and over cooked. The mussels were well cooked and the tomato sauce was a nice touch. I would have preferred more garlic bread to mop up the sauce. Quantity- you don't get much for the price here. Atmosphere- nice clean area to dine. I don't like loud the music though... Servers- nice servers that are fast and attentive. read more

Inside is very cute, at lunchtime you cannot sit in tent, ( at dinner I believe you r able) only outside tables near their windows but the north side is shaded at lunchtime so come early to sit here. We got here at 12:00 on a Friday, 2nd customers. My tilapia tacos were very good. Then I started seeing others coming out past me and oddly all the other tacos were 2x larger than my fish was. It still filled me up but bothered me. There were 4 ordered that I saw and consistently much larger than mine which was strange because I would have thought 1st few people would benefit with heartier portion. The menu is on its way out. Time to print some new ones. Altogether liked Altiro, happy I came but these small things are issues to me. Especially for $15 for 4 mini tacos. read more

Chicago guy visited the deep south burbs to meet "framily" for dinner. (Framily, my easy term for friends and family) Fun atmosphere. Whimsical and botanical. I caught floral scents in the air which made me really, really, desire a cocktail. Though due to dining with deeply religious folks I abstained. The floral /botanical smells added a fresh scent to the space. The mixture of lightened hues and the amount of sunlight drawn inside, the place was lit up. A perfect setting for happy hour gatherings, a date or shared plates with a small group. For a large group? Not the best idea since many of their tables are for twos and their only option is to push together many tables. Also, because the tables are small they don't allow space for many items. I checked them out on a weeknight, it was quiet after 6p and we ended up having the restaurant to ourselves. Their Latin fusion menu has many dishes you'll enjoy. With a group of nine, we ordered the trio of salsas & guac. A soup which easily fed three and all their side dishes (3). The papa brava and arroz verde were so good we had to have seconds. By that time many in the group were getting full. We pressed onto tacos. Clear favorites were the shrimp, vegetarian, salmon and chicken. The salmon tacos had a sizable portion of fish in each taco. That was probably the tastiest fish taco I've had in a very long time. Finally, despite many hard declines to dessert, I threw in orders for churros and fried plantains. Both were epic choices. Not a bit was left behind. **I think some confusion can be cleared if we look at the name of the restaurant and what they offer. "Latin fusion" and their plates are mostly tapas. So no, it's not a Mexican restaurant with common staples or drinks. Unfortunately persons at my table made an ignorant statement of, "what kind of Mexican restaurant doesn't have flan." FFS. Seriously, they don't need flan. Being from Chicago and because there aren't any of these restaurants near me, this is my first time experiencing them. Didn't realize they have a chain of locations across the burbs. Their food was crafted well. The menu works and plates are tasty. My only gripe, the steak tacos were off. Either well done or medium well / dry. If I come across this brand in other suburban lands, I'd check them out. read more

Good service, try the strawberry margarita! Tastes like actual strawberries and not sugary syrup!

Altiro is a delicious and unexpected fusion experience. Funky decor, comfy chairs, lots of light through the giant windows. Chef Martín and his staff are wonderful. We had really nice interactions on the day we went for lunch. The food is quite artfully prepared and tasty to the point of plate-scraping; you will delight in everything on the menu. Not to be missed is the trio of salsas as a starter, and, if you enjoy alcohol, the drink menu is definitely something special. (Hello, roasted poblano chili pepper in my drink!) Finally, I'll bet you've never had potatoes served quite the way Altiro presents them-- absolutely check it out! read more

The ambience is nice . I went to the Frida Destination event which was super cute . The ticket included margarita tastings, Mexican folklore dancing performed by the sweetest children & more . We ordered food and if I have to be honest it was lacking in flavor . The guac didn't have enough flavor, salt , lime or spice. The salad was good but the chicken was finely cubed which made it kind of hard to eat all together . The elote was my favorite . The majority of the margaritas were super sweet but my favorite were the mango, tamarindo and coco ! I had a nice overall experience with the event ! read more

We had a very tasty meal at Altiro while visiting Wheaton. You must start with a cocktail and the flight of guacamole (3 different guacs to try). The homemade chips are divine. The taste reminded me a little bit of Bugles (must be the oil they use) and I ate way too many of them. I ordered the trio of salmon tacos for my entrée and they were very good. My husband ordered the chicken version of the tacos and couldn't eat them all (just full from the drinks, chips and guac). We dined outside on an unseasonably cool July evening. Service was very good and the owner even did his rounds; stopping by to say 'hello' to us. read more

Yesterday's lunch at Altiro was nothing shy of fantástico! My friend and I indulged in a full spread of Mexican Fusion cuisine while we basked in the summer air on their patio. The Guacamole Trio (regular, watermelon, and pineapple) was delicious! The Elitito (elotes) was some of the best I've had with the perfect ratio of lime, cheese, and salt. I order the chicken tacos which were PACKED with flavor from the adobo sauce, smoky salsa, pickled onions and fresh pineapple. My friend enjoyed the fundido tacos with shrimp, melted cheese and more of those fabulous pickled onions. Oh and the tequila I had on the rocks was on point!! What a great lunch! I know the food and drinks are very good. Today I called for a takeout order, supporting our local business during this time of trouble, and it was unexpectedly bad service. I informed the woman who answered the phone that I do not eat carbs and was looking for suggestions. She said: "what are carbs?" Seriously? You work in a restaurant. I explained tortillas, rice, potatoes are not on my diet and if they could replace those items with veggies. Her response: "we can't, we will not give you the tortillas" - when they have salads. Well, there goes our support for them. We order from Pa Lian Burmese restaurant. read more

Upon entering at 5pm we were one of the first ones there and sat in the back, which was fine, but it would have been nice to be asked. It was a birthday celebration. There was a crowd of staff standing at the bar in the walk-way that didn't seem that motivated to move so we could get through to our table. One of the chairs had crumbs on it. I feel like you notice with little things with what it costs to dine out now. The margarita was excellent. I would say that was worth the $14.50. The trio guacamole was fresh. The skirt steak tacos were very dry/disappointing, as if reheated or very over-cooked. I wasn't going to say anything as I was being treated for a birthday, but my friend said "the steak is dry." The carnitas tacos were ok. Have definitely had much better tacos and less expensive out. The churos for dessert were quite good. Al arroz verde was excellent. Our male server was fabulous, kind, and attentive, and I'd give it an additional star if we just had him, but he had a young server in training who looked miserable being there. When I asked how she was doing when he introduced her she looked almost offended I asked her that. I was hoping it would be like the Geneva location, but that location has far tastier food. All in all an ok experience but the steak and the gal in training's attitude dampened it. Maybe she was having a bad day. Regardless don't need to re-visit this place any time soon. read more

Altiro... Love the outside ambiance when it's warm out.. service was overall great. Joseph - our server was kind & greeted us in a timely manner and made sure all of our needs were met all while training someone else! We had an overall awesome time, with multiple staff checking in. Great display of team work. Cleanliness is also great here, it is SO refreshing to walk into a restaurant the first time and see CLEAN. Food & drink wise we had quite a few things Drinks Coladita - up and chilled bourbon rumchata pineapple goodness El chulo - mezcal mango drink with small kick El jarrito - citrusy soda tequila drink All excellent drinks with amazing flavor profiles each individually specific. So rad. The drinks were probably the best part of this visit, they each captured their own personality and the presentation of them was top notch. Whoever invented the drink menu is literally king. Food I'll start off by saying it's important to remember key words "Latin fusion". This isn't going to be a place where you find super authentic rooted flavors, but it's still a great place to try. Definitely Latin rooted flavors with their own kick/mix of addition in each plate. "Seasonal guac" 3 scoops of guac, with different toppings - pineapple, cheese, and pomegranate. Honestly? I wasn't really impressed. It lacked originality. They were just toppings so it wasn't really something I felt should have been mentioned. "Ceviche" Love the idea of small tostadas topped with a cylinder-like block of the ceviche. I believe this was made with tilapia. It was yummy. However, when I think of ceviche I think fresh, juicy, easy to eat. " lamb Barbacoa" Such a cute presentation with this one. Lamb roasted barbacoa served in a personal mini pot served with juicy greatness. Dash of onions and cilantro on the side with lime and corn tortillas. Delish. Carnitas tacos Delish and fatty. There's two types of ppl - those that like fatty meat and those that don't. Well I don't know what to say; it's pork. That's usually what you'll get. This dish is honestly really awesome and definitely has a different flavor profile than what I'm used to with traditional carnitas. You guys definitely hit the nail on the head with this one because I would come back for a round two. read more

We went with the chef's recommendation to start with the guac, elotito, and papas bravas - we loved them all but definitely thought the papas bravas were our favorite.
