We also ordered the mussels which has too strong of a flavor from the sausage and the portion was quite small. Pretty light and definitely not fishy. He had the short rib grilled cheese with a side of Mac and cheese. My always something is, when I checked out the menu before we went I saw Charcuterie but it wasn't on the menu when we got there. We came for lunch before and had a great meal but our dinner experience was so so. This place can get pretty busy so try to make reservations ahead of time or if you get lucky, sit at the bar like we did. They played sports games on TVs above the bar so that was cool. We started off with a few drinks, all of which were decent. Their craft cocktails were pretty good but weren't very strong (sadly haha) so I'd say get a mixed drink like vodka soda/whiskey coke if you want to get more bang out of your buck. Tuna poke - 4/5 stars Great appetizer if you're looking for something fresh, although I wish the portions were a tad bigger. The nuttiness from the macadamia was a nice touch Southern sandwich - 4/5 stars The chicken was nicely battered and crispy, maybe missing a little bit of seasoning but still tasty! The bacon and runny egg made it finger lickin gooood. But the star of the dish, and our whole meal, were the FRIES!!! Oh man. So perfectly fried, golden and crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. And the cheese. I still think about these fries lol Wagyu flank steak - 2.5/5 stars Wagyu flank steak in mole rojo, cheesy sweet potato enchilada. Aghhh it pains me to say this, we had such high hopes but it was a very underwhelming dish. For a wagyu piece of meat, it was a bit tough and lean. I loveeee mole rojo and was well aware it would be sweet but the steak was lacking salt, and on top of the sweet potato enchiladas, it was just a very sweet dish overall. I'd probably say pass and try something else instead. The interior of the restaurant is really nice and modern, and it's even prettier during dinner time. Casual vibes, nothing extremely fancy, so this would be a great date night or to hang with friends. The customer service was better first time around but fair overall. The bartender accidentally knocked over my drink and was kind enough to offer a new one. We ended up getting charged for both drinks lol but luckily we caught it and they made the change so as always, make sure to double check your receipts. Edit: I'm updating my review to 4 stars, because the owner, James, reached out to me and went above and beyond with rectifying the situation. Not only was he incredibly kind and helpful through the situation, he went the extra mile to ensure that my most recent experience with the restaurant didn't end on a bad note. Thank you, James! Your amazing customer service means everything. My waiter spilled someone else's red wine on my white sweater and didn't offer any reconciliation for it. He asked if I wanted him to try to dab it out with the same napkin that he used to clean the rest of the wine with. There was no resolution, barely any apology. Although, I never expect any compensation, it would've been nice. I've worked in the service industry, and the courteous thing to do was at least comp something. I was given the full bill as if nothing happened, not even an additional apology. It was just me with my (hopefully) salvageable sweater stained with red wine. In hindsight, I wish I had gotten a manager involved but it was a busy Saturday night and I truly didn't want to be there another minute. I wanted to give the waiter the opportunity to make it right knowing that it was an accident. I accept the fact that comped items aren't mandatory and I still ate my meal so I didn't mind paying for it but I'm still appalled at the fact I saw him go to the back and chat it up with his coworkers as if this wasn't his fault. Strange, interesting, and absolutely delicious.  Right near the train in downtown Glen Ellyn, this place was pretty full when we got here Saturday night but still had some openings. Some outdoor seating in front but we sat inside, cool intimate interior. We got the chicken baos to start. The baos were super fluffy, had pickled veggies, very crispy chicken, tangy sauce. I got the Taste the Rainbow cocktail, which the waiter says was new and wild - it definitely was. Very gin forward fruit drink with a dollop of sherbert. A little crazy at first but made more sense as the sherbert melted. I got the Jerk Spiced Mahi Mahi. The tostones were fine but probably unnecessary. The rice and beans were just a vessel. The real star was the fish and the bitchin tamarind mole- like sauce on it. Very rich and fruity. My wife got the Eggplant + Burrata pasta with chicken. Sauce and cheese were really good. Normally pasta is just pasta, even home-made all the same. But this was in the 1% of pastas that was indescribably delicious and had a good, different texture. We shared the dark chocolate orange budino dessert. Dense and olive-oily cake. Weird and delicious. All of the protein we had was cooked perfectly. Moist and tasty, a feat for grilled chicken. Waiter was attentive and personable. It seems like the restaurant keeps trying new things, I love that, and can't wait to come back. read more

This place is a great addition to downtown Glen Ellyn. The service was very attentive and it was a cool atmosphere inside. I would give this place 3.5 stars because they messed my burger up. I asked for it medium rare and they cooked the heck out of it. No pink at all. But luckily the toppings on the burger (egg, grilled onion, bacon and aioli) made up for it. Looking back I should have sent the burger back because I don't have much patience for overcooking a burger at a nice restaurant. The broccolini side was so tasty! But the portion was very small. Husband ordered fish & chips; I got the short rib grilled cheese and a side of mashed potatoes w gravy which was barely warm. I never send anything back, but I thought it's my birthday and asking for hot mashed potatoes isn't very demanding. They were in a little crock so I figured they could just throw it in the oven. Server brought back a fresh serving. Again, barely warm. They were awful. Wasn't going to send them back again esp since she never followed up to ask if they were okay. And while she was very efficient and checked in often, she had NO personality. Very serious and straightforward. Not asking to strike up conversation, but it kinda came off as snooty. I was a little annoyed upon arriving because despite making a reservation, we still had to wait almost 15 min to be seated. Our server was nice enough but not very attentive. The restaurant was busy & noisy (on a Saturday evening, understandably) so that could have affected his attention to our table. I tried to get his attention 3x to ask for our check, & I quickly placed my payment on the edge of the table, only for him to walk directly past it 2x without grabbing it. Thankfully another server picked it up & quickly ran my card. This place is great. You can stay downstairs at the bar for a fun loud scene or get a more cozy table upstairs. Either way, you'll experience attentive service, and amazing food. We ordered for takeout for our anniversary dinner. With two little kids, dining out as much as we would like doesn't happen. But I was excited to try Maize + Mash! Their online system is easy enough to use. On their site you can make all your selections and add any notes at the bottom. The one thing that wasn't the best was some of the choices you had to click were tough to get the bullet to select. It took us a few tries to get it right! The food was ready in 30 minutes. It was hot and waiting for me when I arrived. Now, I still had to get the food home and two little kids in bed before we could eat it, so some of the integrity was lost (I am not faulting them for that, I know that's on me!). The food was delicious none the less! The burger has great flavor. The fries are super crispy and salty. The cheese curds were an ample order and I enjoyed the dipping jam that came with them! My husband got a Nashville hot chicken sandwich. He's very aioli averse so he didn't have it on there. He said the sandwich needed a sauce though... so he will have to figure out how to sauce it on up next time! He enjoyed his food too. I would say the prices, portion size and quality were all great. Bourbon Belly Hospitality really found the magical formula for successful restaurant concepts. The team behind both Barrel + Rye, Burger Local/Social, and Maize + Mash offer up a combination of craft drinks and modern, tapas-style comfort food. Expanding beyond downtown Geneva, Maize + Mash brings the same vibe to Glen Ellyn: a city type atmosphere with a wide whiskey selection and hearty meat centric dishes. They don't take reservations, but there's a nice Irish pub next door to grab a couple drinks while you wait. While it doesn't look that big, there's actually a whole upstairs area that has seating as well. We usually come to Maize with a big group, and we've always been seated within a reasonable amount of time. Buffalo wings - The wings here are surprisingly great. They're super meaty with a light breading that provides the perfect crispness without tasting overly breaded. The buffalo sauce had the perfect balance of richness, spice, and tang, and they coated the wings just enough to be saucy without drowning the wings and softening its crisp. The ranch was the perfect complimentary cooling flavor and had my preferred level of runniness without being too thick. Chorizo + Calamari - This almost seemed like an experimental dish. It was like a weird spin on nachos. I like chorizo and I like fried calamari, but together it just didn't quite fit. Shrimp + Grits - This came with about 5 pieces of shrimp that were perfectly blackened with a really nice seasoning blend. Then underneath was a super savory pile of grits. Even if you typically hate grits, you'll love these. They didn't skimp on the cheese, and the pieces of bacon throughout were little bursts of flavor. Maize + Mash Burger - This was one of the best things we ordered. This was a damn good burger. The patty was extra juicy, the cheese melted nicely, the caramelized onions elevated the flavor and classed it up, and of course everything tastes better with a fried egg on top. The truffle fries that we got as a side was amazing as well. They were battered and crispy, and had a strong but not overwhelming truffle flavor. Southern Sandwich - On paper the southern chicken sandwich seemed like a can't miss. Who doesn't love the combination of fried chicken, bacon, cheese, and a fried egg to top it off? Individually each element tasted good, but together it just wasn't a cohesive flavor. It just seemed a bit dry, like it was missing a sauce or a meltier cheese to tie it all together. Crazy Kid's Mac - Somehow combining chicken tenders, bacon, Cheetos, and goldfish in mac n cheese didn't quite work. The cheese sauce dried up quickly and every bit was just a mix of crunchy dryness. Overall, Maize + Mash is a solid place if you can get a table within a reasonable wait. They have great craft drinks and a menu full of familiar, yet modernized American comfort dishes. read more

This is one spot we will absolutely return to. The atmosphere is funky and cool. Downstairs is a little loud, but we've also eaten upstairs and it's also cute but quieter. The service was great. I went there to catch up with former coworkers I haven't seen in a long time. There was an hour long wait for a table so I waited (Friday evening, and I was the first one there). The tenders are out of a kids section of the menu, but out waitress dressed it up in an adult platter (nice of her). They didn't take too long and weren't in tremendous portion since they were kids meal oriented. This was fine by me since I tried their scotch egg (good) and their gumbo soup (not great) as well. They had a good clean taste; well cooked; not too greasy. I felt there may have been the slightest over use of batter to give it a 5 and it didn't remind me at all of anything spectacular. I saw Maize + Mash on a Yelp list for best bourbon bars, so we stopped by on a Friday night for a friends birthday. If you want a reservation to avoid a wait I would definitely plan ahead, but we got lucky and were able to slip in with now wait (although the hostess said this was rare). We just got a round of cocktails and fries-- The fries are those amazing double fried fries that you just can't pass up. The portion size for them was a little small so if you have a large table I'd order more, and I wish they came with something more elevated than Heinz ketchup, but they were super crispy and tasty. The drink menu has lots of variety as far as liquors and flavors go. We opted for the Smoked Manhattan and the On Wednesdays We Wear Pink. The Smoked Manhattan had great flavors with the bitterness and cherries, but they either forgot it was supposed to be smoked or it was unnoticeable. There was no flavor or showmanship with the smoke. The On Wednesdays We Wear Pink had perfect egg white frothiness, but it was quite sweet. I could only compare it to a pink starburst. It was very yummy, but just know it's nearly a dessert cocktail before ordering! Overall, the ambiance was nice but I wish there was more art/showmanship for the cocktail bar. It met expectations for a solid birthday drinks spot, but I'll likely try a few other places in the area next time! read more
