I would advise anyone considering this place to read other 1-2 star reviews. Food here is okay overall. The issue is the owners. I went with a friend who hadn't ever been there; I've been there twice before (pre-Covid). When I asked for a cocktail - they have a full bar- I was told "no alcohol today" with no explanation. Asked why & received a blank stare- very odd behavior. We ordered dinner & main dishes were okay. But when I commented on our appetizer, as it wasn't as described in the menu, all hell broke loose! We were screamed at by both owners- after yelling at us, she went to her husband/chef yelling in Hungarian. He then came from the kitchen to join the verbal attack! Told at top volume never to come back (as if we would after the scene they created). A family was eating there & were clearly frightened by the behavior of both parties. Very authentic 100% homemade Hungarian, GREAT service and full bar. If that is what you are looking for then this is the place for you. Decent portions and a nice amount of menu options. We ordered the Taste of Huszar which is an assortment of cheese, meat, bread, fruit and vegetables. We also had Bakonyi Chicken with dumplings. I have nothing bad to say about the food but honestly, it is nothing to write home about. The desserts on the other hand are wonderful. My palate tends to like the more exotic and although this food was good, I found it bland and uneventful. For me it was your standard, meat and stew sauce with a potato or dumplings. They have a very small parking lot, maybe it fits 5 cars. Street parking is a nightmare and is zoned, so here is a tip. Right across the street from the restaurant is HOWARD street. Park there on the right side. Its a dead end and is not zoned. You are welcome. read more

One of the best things about my hometown, Pittsburgh, is the availability of true ethnic foods. You want Italian, go to the Italian section of town. Polish? German? Same thing. Hungarian? Come here. Huzzar big test? Chicken Paprikash. You see mom was Hungarian and noone made better paprikash than mom. I am a close second. Mom and I make ours with pieces of chicken, bones in. Our homemade dumplings are spoon size. Huzzar has smaller, but not too small, pieces of chicken. Their dumplings are smaller. There are ample portions of both decorated with a dollop of sour cream, two slices of sweet red pepper, onion and cucumber. Did they do better than Mom? Close enough that I plan to eat here again when we return in September. If you haven't tried Hungarian food, I urge you to try Huzzar located on E North street close to the East ohio exit of 279. I was excited to try this place because I have heard so many good things, and after eating here I have no idea why. The food was low quality and bland. The waitress (owner?!) does not speak English well, and after multiple attempts to explain what I wanted, she failed to bring me anything close. When politely informed of her mistake, she apologized, but neither brought out the right food nor took the incorrect item off the bill.. despite the fact that it was obviously untouched. In fact there was an inexplicable $5 up charge for the mushroom gravy that the menu clearly said was part of the dish being served. The Taste of Huszar app seemed to be sourced with Kraft products. abysmal. I liked nothing about my visit and will never return. Great place to get some tasty, authentic Hungarian food at an inexpensive price. We split a pair of entrees and a cucumber salad along with a fried bread, and enjoyed all of it. The chicken paprikas dish was probably my favorite. They also had a tasty dessert. Service was friendly. There is a small parking area that won't hold too many cars and is a bit of a pain to get out of. And they had an annoying show on the TV. But that is about all the negative I can say about it. Our visit here happened because there was a long wait at another local restaurant. I called and was told they could accommodate our party of 5 (including a toddler) immediately. Done. Little did we know this would turn out to be maybe even a little better than the dinner we had planned on. We each had something different and there was not a bad thing on our table. We search for Hungarian restaurants everywhere we go and now Pittsburgh has one right on the corner of East Street & North Avenue on the Northside. Hungarian food is delicious comfort food with slow cooked meats, flavorful sauces, homemade dumplings or noodles and scrumptious desserts. This restaurant also has a fairly large vegetarian menu and a full bar with some craft beer selections on tap. I ordered the pickled red cabbage slaw and my husband got the cucumber salad to start. Both were fantastic. My entree was Chicken Paprikás which is stewed chicken in a paprika based cream sauce over dumplings. There were equal parts white & dark meat chicken in the dish, so I ate everything but the dark & my husband finished that along with his Beef Pörkölt in gravy over dumplings. Dessert was fresh from the oven Sour Cherry Strudel and a cottage cheese crepe Palacsinta as good as Grandma R. used to make! I'm certain most people have no idea what Hungarian food is. Sure, you've probably heard of or even had "goulash". But I assure you, that barely scratches the surface of this tasty, real comfort food cuisine. I consider myself a subject matter expert on Hungarian food. A dubious distinction you say? Ha. I grew up with Hungarian food, my Hungarian grandmother taught me to make some dishes (along with a few curse words), and I've sought it out in my decades of travel domestically and internationally. I've eaten it all my life and even in Budapest. I can assure you I know legit Hungarian cuisine. This place has legit food. Full of flavor, comforting, appealing on every level, and a pure taste sensation. I was able to talk at length with the owner, Judy. She brought the chef out to introduce him to us. She recruited him in Hungary last year and convinced him to come over. He is doing fabulous things in that kitchen. We started with some red cabbage and cucumber salad appetizers. Both incredible. On to the chicken paprikas and porkolt. Awesome. Finished with the real test - sour cherry strudel and cottage cheese palacsinta. They were perfect We each had a Joe IPA draft (from Oregon) - haven't seen that beer anywhere around here. Delightful. Sure it may not be the high end restaurant you may normally seek out. This is a bar with great food. Solid 4 plus stars. Next time you're thinking you'd like some ethnic food, pass on those Italian, Indian, middle eastern, Chinese thoughts. Go for comfort. She sharply replied she was not. She had a table of 15 coming in who had reservations and wouldn't be able to seat us. Very disappointed. Authentic Hungarian food. We saw this place when driving through Millvale. It looks fairly plain on the outside. Inside is a bar and behind that an area with booths. The walls are covered with memorabilia from the Austro-Hungarian empire as well as pictures from more modern Hungary. The food is plentiful and very moderately priced. The majority of dishes have meat but there are plenty of appetizers and entrees for vegetarians. We had our entrees served with dumplings but one could substitute mashed potatoes. Service was quick. The owners were good about explaining the food options. I boxed up part of my entree because I wanted to try the traditional gundel palacsinta. I am generally not a big desert person but this one is a must try. The gundel palacsinta is a crepe filled with apricot jam and ground walnuts. It is covered with chocolate sauce. read more

The owner brought over a master chef from Hungary who spent 6 months teaching the owner's husband the authentic Hungarian menu. They have limited seating available but unfortunately I don't think you'll have an issue getting a reservation right now during the pandemic. Wow, what an experience. I am 66 years old and have dined out many, many times and I have never experienced such a rude owner. She is the cook too. We were there on a Sunday night and had a good meal, but what happened next, I couldn't believe. They advertise to be open until 7PM and a couple entered at 5:50. At 6:05 the owner came out of the kitchen and shouted at the couple the kitchen was closed and accused them of just arriving. We vouched for them and told the owner how rude she was.
