Ambiance: You couldn't ask for a cooler looking place in and out, I am glad that it has reopened after being closed for almost 30 years! Service: Been there twice and the waitstaff was very attentive and polite both times, no complaints. Haven't sat at the bar but it looks inviting. Food: Wasn't bad but wasn't exceptional. The menu has a lot of great offerings but nothing I have tried was on par with say, other German inspired establishments in the area. Both times the food was sort of cold as well. I think with some tweaks and tuning it'll be better than other places in the area. My only other complaints were that the seating, although rustic, is rickety and uncomfortable. They were playing TOP 40 country music which was also sort of weird for how the place looks inside. I am pretty easy to please and feel the place has a ton of potential, with the right improvements and some marketing they will be extremely busy as it's probably one of the most unique eating establishments in the area. read more

Wonderful place with loads of character!! Staff was warm and friendly, owner stopped to talk with us. Food was delicious! Would highly recommend this gem! read more

The chili and potato pancakes were good but the rest of my meal was lacking. Chicken tenders were way over cooked and the fried cheese had too much breading. The atmosphere of this two hundred year old building saved the evening along with the friendly service. They need to improve their culinary skills however if they hope to stay the course. read more

German food in a real German atmosphere! This restaurant just reopened 6 weeks ago after a 29 year absence! It is located in the Old Economy District of Ambridge which is historical. Walking in makes you feel like you are in a Bier Stube in Germany...I have never been but I can imagine it! The bar is amazingly rustic! The ceiling beams and mugs hanging from them! There is a lot of seating. Some small tables and also larger seating areas. Several sections. Even a private room for meetings and parties. A great menu...I attached pictures of it. The food was very hot and stayed that way while eating. Nice! Portions were perfect. Nothing hugely falling off the plate. The hot apple sauce was my favorite! It had chunks in and again stayed hot! I also had the jagerschnitzel, Very good. A nice sized portion along with spatzle. They also have a nice beer list to complement all the meals and sandwiches. Be sure to walk around and enjoy the decor. So different than the chain restaurants! You will go back again! read more

Stepping into Mad Anthony's is a treat. I love the charm of the perfectly mismatched tables and chairs and all the natural wood features. The beer selection is impressive. The food, on my first visit was ok, but I came back after they had a week or so to work out the kinks and it was fantastic. I loved the potato pancakes, the spatzle was great. I enjoyed the schnitzel. However the BLT missed the mark. Id love to see super crunchy lettuce and a heartier portion of thick crispy bacon next time! excited to have this beautiful new addition to the neighborhood! read more

First off the atmosphere was on point, love the wood and exposed brick. Next the staff is welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the building. Those I was with ordered beers and all were great. Then the food comes and it's absolutely excellent. Cooked and seasoned to perfection. This was our first time here, we will be back, and already planning to bring out of town guests! I can't believe this little gem was hiding here all this time! read more

Let me first say that this is a quaint and charming place, and there is plenty for the inquiring mind. Unfortunately, we were less than attended to while sitting at the bar. Although we were the only ones sitting there, and there were only two other people in the entire restaurant, we had to repeatedly call the bartender over for service. I ordered the potato pancakes, and it was like eating one giant peppercorn. My husband ordered the club and fries. The club was very good, but the fries were cold. It was so disappointing because we want to support our local businesses, but very little was redeeming. read more

I wish the owners well, I'm sure it's an establishment enjoyed by many, we did not enjoy our trip. Firstly, we're not country music people and were surprised to find it playing in a German restaurant to begin with. Not a huge deal, just seems an odd choice. Our waitress was attentive but disinterested. When I asked for a beer recommendation, she told me she was more of a Miller Lite person and couldn't help. Our biggest issue came when our food arrived. My girlfriend's schnitzel came with roughly a tablespoon of jarred garlic on top, something none of us had ever seen in German food before. The beer cheese that came with the pretzels was not beer cheese but nacho cheese. Still ate it, I'm a fat guy, but another strike against authenticity (the mustard on the tables throughout is just Aldi brand mustard, too.) I ordered a veggie wrap that was so wet, it fell apart, required a fork to eat, and left my plate looking like I had ordered soup. The building is so nice inside and the surrounding part of Ambridge is beautiful. A ton of potential in this place, I'd love to see them try a little bit harder and soar. I live right across the river, I'd love to become a regular. read more

We stopped in to Mad Anthony's for lunch recently. The dining room is quite charming; very rustic with original wooden beams and exposed brick. Unfortunately, the food was not up to par. The pork Jagerschnitzel was overdone and chewy, with minimal gravy. The Spatzle was ok, but very garlicky. The pretzel appetizer was ok, but very greasy. Overall, a pricy lunch compared to other, more authentic German restaurants. read more

Recently had a gathering at Mad Anthony's. It was great. Loved the decor and the food was delicious. The service was very good. Would recommend going there. read more

Damn, 30 years in the USA and honestly gave up on finding real German food. Well, here it is. They are not only trying, no, they already have it. Serving several authentic dishes, like "Sauerbraten" and even a simple "Hähnchen Schnitzel" in a beautiful and rustic, German, ambieance. Thank god, the service isn't German, but friendly American. Go and enjoy! I will be back! read more

Such a great place! Went in for a late lunch with a friend. I remember it from back in the day but they have done a beautiful job with renovation. It has all the charm of the old mad Anthony's but a little spruced up and funky. The service was super friendly and prompt. They had a great selection of beers. I had a seasonal harvest beer which was delicious. The food was also very good and portions were large and prices were exceptionally reasonable. I will definitely be back read more

Mad Anthony's Bier Stube - Chilli - Pubs Near Me - Ambridge, Pennsylvania

Flat beer, soggy fries and tough corned beef. My husband ordered a beer on tap and there was no head, upon drinking, it was flat and we presumed a problem with the tap. The waitress asked the bartender who said it was fine. So he got a can of beer. The "fresh cut fries" were burnt on the outside, undercooked inside and not at all crispy. I ordered a portobello veggie wrap which contained no portobello mushrooms. The wrap was so wet, laying in a puddle of liquid on the plate. The tortilla got gummy it fell apart. The corned beef on my husband's was so tough he gave up. The waitress was nice enough but only took 20% and the beer off the bill. Neither of us ate even half our meal so we paid $45 for a 16 oz beer and two glasses of iced tea and a handful of gross fries. We will not be going back. read more

100% worth a stop! We were burnt out on work and needed dinner out. They seated us even though it was Valentine's Day weekend.. the food was good and the beer selection was very good. Our server was top notch. Thank you Rachel. Great German food selection. Only downside and out of their control was parking. Piled up snow made parking difficult. Great atmosphere. Bar area looked nice. I hope we sit there next. read more

I enjoy German food which is hard to come by in the Pittsburgh area and was looking forward to trying Mad Anthonys. The ambiance is great, a rustic setting and a nice atmosphere. My better half went with the pork schnitzel, it was nice and tender but I was surprised they didn't have it available in veal. I went with the Wurst sampler platter, the sausages were of quality and very tasty. However the sides were extremely skimpy, 3 tablespoons of sauerkraut, 2 tablespoons of spaetzle, and a teaspoon (seriously) of german potato salad. Nothing like in their photo and definitely not worth $30. I'm hoping that they were just running out of food and this isn't the norm. We also ordered the potato pancakes, which would have been good if they were served hot and not lukewarm to cold. I would hope that down the road they hire a hostess as it's a free for all when you walk in there and your on your own. Would I go back? I definitely would as it has great potential, I just hope they work the kinks out before they flounder. read more

I've tried this place a couple of different times and I always wait over an hour for my food.If they come by and ask you , if you want a refill on your drink or you want to order another drink , expect at least a fifteen minute wait. This place caters to Sewickley and not Ambridge. It's comfortable inside , but they don't have any small tables for 2 people. The first time I went , I waited an hour and a half for my food. The Second time I went. I waited an hour for my food if you're not in a hurry. The food's good. But expect to be there for a while. read more

Been here a few times since they opened and everything I have had was excellent. Great wings and sandwiches. Big portions and lots of homemade dishes. Staff is friendly, I've seen the chef personally come out and ask patrons how their food was. The bar is so cool and they offer seasonal drinks and specialty cocktails. I am so glad a good sit down restaurant is in my neighborhood. I will continue to visit. Check it out! You will not be disappointed. read more

I thought the Food was good , I liked the red cabbage the most , The pork jagger schnitzel was ok , the spaetzel was also good , I'd go back again read more

This place is super cute inside. It's also awesome because they take reservations even for small groups. The first time we went the waitress was awesome and the food was good (schnitzel) We had a larger group but the difference from the first person to the last person getting food was probably 15-20 minutes. The second time we went, there were only 3 of us. We were told to sit where we wanted, the place was not busy and then no one came to us. I stopped staff a couple times just to ask for menus and it still took at least 10 minutes. Ordered water which took a good 10 mins to get and no one ever came to give us refills. Wanted to try different items and was not impressed with the Rueben or the brat plate. When I ordered the potato pancakes and asked where the sour cream was, I was told that it was extra even though I got sour cream and applesauce with it one week before. I'll give it another try but definitely left disappointed. read more

Impromptu lunch on a rare spring like January afternoon. Awesome atmosphere and ambience. Perfectly captures the character of a very old building, beautiful bar, original brick and wood everywhere. Really good draft & bottle list, and pleasantly surprised by wine list. There's something for everyone. Wanted to sample as much as we could for lunch. Ordered the kielbasa which' was very good, hot, on a soft warm fresh roll, side of perfectly seasoned crisp fries. Top notch kraut topping the kielbasa, and a couple spoonfuls of applesauce as a perfect side complement. Next up the jagerschnitzel with its delicious mushroom gravy, sides of applesauce and German potato salad and asked for spaetzle as an additional side. All were delicious, hot, and fresh. Pleasant, friendly, timely service. Really enjoyed it, can't wait to return to try more or just belly up to the old, cozy, dark bar for beers or wine. read more
