    Chicken Paprikash with dumplings

Huszar is as traditional as it comes! In the heart of Northside, is this cozy Hungarian bar/restaurant. Reservations are needed because the restaurant only has about 8 table. We were fortunate enough to walk in for a table for 2, but there were several people turned away due to not having enough space and reservations not being made. If you want traditional & authentic Hungarian food, you've found the right place. The restaurant started as a bar, owned by the father of the current owners. Once he passed away, the current owners took over and turned it into a restaurant. The owner graciously sat with us and talked about the restaurant. She even told me that my last name, Kovach, equates to Smith in English. Apparently, it's a popular last name. My grandfather was Hungarian, so it was nice to get a little taste of his culture. The owner and her husband are the only ones that run the restaurant, and they rub a tight ship! My husband & I enjoyed our meals, and here is what we had: Creamed Onion Soup: The soup's name perfectly describes what this soup tastes like. It is creamy and very onion forward. It was delicious but on the lukewarm side when eating it. Chicken Paprikash with Dumplings: This is a popular Hungarian dish, and it was delicious. The chicken was tender, the dumplings soft, and the sauce perfectly flavorful! Creamed Beef with Dumplings: My husband had this dish and he really enjoyed it. It reminded me of a more flavorful pot roast with cut up smaller pieces. Strudel: I decided to take home a piece of Strudel foe dessert. The dough was very soft, and it was surprisingly tasty! Huszar is like a warm hug on a cold day. It's comfort food at its finest, and I'll be back to try some more cuisine!

Home-cooked and warm. I was transported to Eastern Europe, a small hole in the wall vibe. They close the kitchen an hour before closing and they mean it! We had a reservation for 6:45 and we were urged to order quickly, which we obliged. The food came out lightning fast and boy was it delightful. Rich, flavorful, and outstanding. We had the goulash and the chicken paprikas. And we even got an incredible crepe dessert (reminded us of the palachinka when we visited Croatia!) I would highly recommend (but def come well before closing!)

The food was amazing and came out very quickly. We had the Bahkonyi and Stewed Beef. The service was good too until it got a little "busy." That is in quotations because even though it was a reasonable number of people coming in, the owner started getting rude with everyone. It was weird because they were not overwhelmed. They were keeping up with no problem, but she felt overwhelmed. She yelled at a group coming in even though they had a reservation. She was very short with other customers and gave one couple only two options to order since the kitchen is "kinda closed at 6," in her words. The hours say they are open until 7 but she refused to seat 2 more sets of customers at 6:15. Then the cook came out and yelled at her in Hungarian. My advice, Hire a high school kid after school to bus tables, wash dishes, and run food during dinner service. Or, if you hate people don't work with the public. I wouldn't come again, I dodged the owner's wrath at customers once and wouldn't risk a second time. It is a shame, the food was outstanding. If you are going to stop in, go early at an off time and make a reservation. If there are more than 4 people already there just leave. That will feel like too many for them.

Make sure you make a reservation. Kitchen is fully closed 7:00 and trust me they won't serve you This is the most home style/homiest places I've eaten at. It's so Mom and Pop. The wife sits out on her couch in the middle of the restaurant and talks to you like your grandchildren. It's awesome. It's set up like the most Eastern European spot with so much Hungarian decor The food itself.... Very bland. Everything needed salt. The goulash broth was good and potatoes in it cooked well. It pains me to say this because the service was arguably the best I've ever had and I loved them so much

Small family Hungarian restaurant. We were there about 4:30 pm one day, greeted by friendly couple. The wife told us multiple stories about the restaurant, living in US as Hungarian, etc. Food was excellent- we split a potato pancake; I had chicken Magyar schnitzel and wife had a kielbasa sandwich. Dessert was tart cherry strudel - must get!

We went to this place on a Friday night at the time of our reservation. We were seated immediately. The restaurant was full of Hungarian cultural items such as maps and photos which gave it a nice ethnic vibe. The house was run by an old couple. The lady kept having conversation with the guests that was good. We ordered langos, goolash, stewed beef, and multilayered cake. The langos was better than what I had tasted in Budapest. The goolash was much worse. Other items were mediocre. This place was worth visiting once.

I've driven by this place so many times when I worked in the neighborhood and I finally had a chance to stop by and I regret not finding this place sooner!! We got a few very tasty dishes here and the food is comforting, very flavorful and tastes like home. It's like an elevated home cooking. Not pretentious and totally delicious. The chicken paprikas is excellent. I also loved the Magyar schnitzel with the mushroom sauce and langos was such a tasty appetizer. The service was good, prompt and friendly. We loved the mom n pop feel of the restaurant. I can't wait to come back and try other dishes!

We went for lunch today for my brother's birthday. It's a nice little hidden gem for sure. I had the Chicken Paprikas. The chicken was very tender and full of flavor and the dumplings were perfect. My boyfriend got the schnitzel and said it was great as well. My brother got the ribs that were on special for the day at the recommendation of our servor and oh my gosh they were amazing. Fall off the bone tender and packed full of flavor. If you see that as their special TRY IT. My sister in law got the steak and it was really good too. The service was fast and our server was very nice and was good at recommending dishes since we had never been there before.

Food was great! Appetizers were so good forgot to take pictures. The portions were great. One of the owners Judy greeted us and was very welcoming. I had the steak, the fired onions were piled high and crispy. My mousse cake was delicious and was told it is made fresh! If you go during peak eating hours make sure to make a reservation as there is limited seating.

Absolutely wonderful meal - not quite the same as my Grandmother's recipe, but as close as I've tasted in 20 years! If you love Hungarian/Slovak food, this is the place to be. The owners and staff are friendly, and interested in discussing their food heritage. The nokedli (dumpling or spaetzle to non-natives) are incredible, and it's such a rare treat to find them in a restaurant. The Chicken Paparikish and the Gypsy Pork are both amazing, and the portions are quite large. The rich chicken soup has a deep, hearty stock base which just might contain some anise in addition to celery and onion (unconfirmed). We sat at the bar, and the service was efficient and well-informed, but there's plenty of tables too. Even better, for 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, beer, and wine our bill (with tip) was $100. Don't miss one of the most delicious and unique meals in Pittsburgh!

Great food...snitzel and gnocchi were great. Potato pancakes were excellent ( not your normal small pancake only)

Bloomfield area of Pittsburgh was not one I explored much when I lived there many years ago. But…read morethere was one place I went to there that I had to return to when I returned for a visit. Apteka. This was perfect for my wife, who is vegan. An all vegan Eastern-European eatery. Great weather added to the ambience. Plenty of plants in the background. We had a foursome with my friend and his husband. Apteka offers a service where you place your orders at the bar, and they come bring the food to you when it's ready. We started off with Hungarian fried bread (Langos) and then followed it with Salatka ziemniaczana. Potato salad with greens. Entree we had the pierogis. I mean, we Had to, back in Pittsburgh. Only thing missing was the cookie table but the dessert was great as well. Everything was comforting and filling. Plenty for us two. They had a special collab beer with 2 Frays, a brewery that is really solid. Was just starting off when I was leaving Pittsburgh 5 years ago and now has been pretty popular in Bloomfield. Overall, Apteka offers fine dining, inspired dishes with a vegan twist, and is a must. Reservations are a must as dining is limited to the weekend.

Food was super tasty, but that's about the only good thing about this restaurant…read more You order at the bar, get a number, and your food comes out to your table. This resulted in a chaotic atmosphere at the two places where you could order food and constantly having to get up from your table every time you needed something. The staff essentially became food runners and they were not very pleasant. We were told that we could not have an appetizer followed by our main course as "food comes out as it's ready." With the bar being backed up, this meant we received some apparently pre-made food even before our drinks arrived. Again, it felt chaotic. The final proverbial "straw" was that they sat strangers right next to us at the same table which was extremely awkward and uncomfortable. All in all, it was hands-down one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. :(
