No sweetness no nothing. The tator-tot casserole and potato salad though is a whole other story. Talk about delicious! Both a must try. My memories of the farmers market area of Dallas Texas are some of my earliest. Going back decades to when it was an actual farmers market. You know,where farmers load trucks of fresh produce and travel 10s or hundreds of miles in order to sell the fruits of their labor and make a living. Well, starting about 40 years ago,that small farmer ethos started fading and the powers that be implemented a Farmers Market Redevelopment Plan. Bingo,that's where we are today. A popular multiuse,living, working, resturant, shopping district that's self sustaining on the edge of downtown. Enter Hurtado and another startegiclly placed outpost for their award winning Texas BBQ with a twist. Located in a new architecturally pleasing building,the only potential barrier between you and the brisket is parking. On my Tuesday lunch this wasn't a problem but at busier times,keep this in mind. When you enter,the place is bright and clean with staff waiting to make your visit count. The hostess even brought us menues as we looked up at the wall menu choices,nice touch. Before long we decided and slid up the counter to order. Ordering,paying,taking our number and beverage glasses, was easy peasy. In case your inclined,there is a full bar which may entice my return visit . Full array of soft drinks and ice tea is also handy. We took a comfortable booth and only wait ed a few minutes ( long enough for our delicious hand cut fries to cook) before our "El Jeffe" was delivered to our table. We came by in between my conference sessions during a fairly non-existent lunch break. Fortunately, it was very close by and there was no line. We popped in, ordered, and bam! Queso!! I ordered queso. I know. I also ordered mac and cheese and my man went for brisket and turkey. I loved the queso and the salsa was so yummy. I just piled a huge scoop of salsa and a dab of queso and it was perfect. The turkey was delicious and flavorful and the brisket was pretty freaking incredible. The mac and cheese was ok. Staff was very friendly and helpful with ordering. The spectacular: Service, cleanliness of the restaurant, staff floating to check on you, prices were on par with other places. The brisket was definitely the star of the show for me. The good: The turkey was very tasty and juicy. I could have used more smoke flavoring but that is just a preference and not a knock on it. My girl loved it. The queso was really good as well. The ok: Mac and cheese was kind of just there. Didn't love but didn't hate it either. The miss: Was not offered bread, onions, pickles or jalapeños. Had to ask for all three and then only received two pieces of bread and a tiny helping of pickles and onions but zero jalapeños. For the longest time, this place, famous for their tex mex barbecue mash up, has been on our radar. So we finally gave in to curiosity and paid them a visit to celebrate a birthday. My first thought was to go to the original Arlington location, but thanks to Yelpers providing lot of photos and reviews, we decided that it might not be ideal for a large group since we would probably have to sit outside. That's how we ended up choosing the Dallas location, which has plenty of indoor, air conditioned seating. We had a lot of mouths to feed and wanted to try as many things as possible, so we ordered the El Jefe and the El Patron plus Texas twinkies. Together the meals came with sausage (jalapeno & cheddar and poblano jack), pulled pork, brisket, ribs, turkey, burnt ends, and birria tacos. For our sides we chose mexican corn, mexican rice, mac & cheese, tater tot casserole, potato salad and charro beans. Just about everything was exceptional, although for me the brisket really stood out. I can't remember when or even if I have ever had a better brisket. The smoky flavor and tenderness of the meat made it absolutely perfect. My favorite side was the tater tot casserole. It was about as scrumptious as a potato dish can possibly get. The tacos deserve an honorable mention because they were outstanding as well. Of course that's not surprising since they're filled with that delicious brisket. As great as the meal was, I wouldn't consider it to be 5 stars for several reasons. First of all, the sausages, which I almost always like the most, turned out to be my least favorite. The casings were so thick that it was difficult to cut through and to chew. The only barbecue sauce available was a bit too sweet, and I'm usually a fan of sweet sauces. Finally, the sides were kind of small, not only in relation to the amount of meat that's included, but also for the price. As other Yelpers have pointed out, the parking lot surrounding the place will cost you, and that rate per hour is higher on the weekend than on weekdays. It's literally sickening and absolutely kills my appetite. Over the last year, I've spoken to 2 different managers who've assured me it wouldn't happen again, and I've spoken to this "bar manager" 3 different times before, but he keeps on doing it. Good grief, the literally once-every-4-years Olympics are on live today, yet the first thing I see walking through the door is a closeup of a grotesquely bloodied face. It's crazy. Little kids in the restaurant staring at the TV in disbelief, my stomach literally turning to the point where we just left. Other bartenders at Hurtado's (who don't put UFC on the TV) have confided in me that this guy does it because he's really into it and HE wants to watch it. Again, it's crazy. Are TVs for guests or for employees?!? This isn't some late night sports bar; it's a family restaurant (I thought) I live right across the street and I've really tried to work through your managers, but they either don't care or aren't able to address the problem. I'm done at this point; anytime I come through your door, if that guy is working, I'm turning right back around. It's a damned shame. The cornbread was okay, kinda dry. The Mac and cheese was a liquidy kinda sauce, similar to terry blacks. Okay Okay... I want to first say that I come from a city that is known for BBQ so it is really hard to impress me. Food & Price Point (3/5): We got the Big Papa , 2 Meats plate, and a Twinkie ( $60) . Now first issue, the 2 piece meat plate literally came with one rib LOL. I understand that they measure out the meat to be 1/4 of a lb each, but when you see that translate to ONE rib .... that is literally laughable. The meat itself on the plate was good, but not outstanding. My stuffed potato was good, but my potato itself could have been been cooked a little longer, and the amount of meat was less than I would have expected. I think the best part of the meals were the Green Beans and the Twinkie (Stuffed Pepper) . Service/Location (5/5): This Hurtado location is very nice, clean, and spacious. To get started I'm 66 and I've eaten barbecue all over the south so we decided to try this place today. This has to be the worst barbecue I have ever experienced. All the meat was fat. we ordered burnt ends and it was pure fat there was absolutely no meat on them whatsoever and the potato salad looked like Oatmeal and My wife asked me what it and it doesn't even taste like potatoes. I have no idea how this restaurant is getting high ratings, but we were not the only people complaining when we left. Stay away if you want real barbecue go to Terry Blacks or pecan Lodge hell even Bucky's and Terrell gas stations got better barbecue in this. read more

The line to eat is kind of long but the food comes out pretty fast. The food is delicious. The inside is really good for families and small amor large get togethers. There was a nice bar inside I couldn't drink because I'm pregnant but I did. Appreciate the presentation of the dried fruit for garnishment definitely gives the drink an elevated feel. The best Texas twinkies I've ever had the brisket was Juicy's the Elote sausage was something I didn't. Know I needed. The brisket babies potato was amazing I do like mine with extra everything that's my personal disclaimer. I did have the option to add it or request extra from my table but it's ok. The ribs fell off the bone. So tender. The macaroni was just ok to me because the noodles were over cooked the flavor was there for sure tho. I do it all over again.
