Staff was incredible. Restaurant had great vibes, super clean, and you can tell very well maintained. However, I'm not gonna say that the food was the best barbecue I've had. It was good, but there were some slight flaws. Main one being the original sausage. Was not my cup of tea. I do very much recommend the burnt ends if available, and the banana pudding was amazing!
Monday afternoon this counter style restaurant was pretty empty. They only offer the pulled pork as a weekly special, which was sort of a bummer so we ordered the brisket and grilled cheese sandwich along with the Texas Twinkie and banana cream dessert and pecan pie. The desserts were terrible, but the brisket grilled cheese was amazing. The Texas Twinkie was so smoky that was overwhelming to me. The staff were great- just wanted to mention they had great customer service service.
Finally! 15 years after the highly anticipated opening I made It! But hold on,let's not celebrate yet. For those sitting in the car trying to decide or others looking for BBQ in the area,my recommendation is go elsewhere. I have a very good reason for this and it's disappointment. Don't get me wrong,there was a lot to like about the place. Walking in the door into the dining full bar area,we were cheerfully greated by the bartend-ress on protocol. 48 hours into this review and I'm just at 3 paragraphs and deciding how long or not this is going to be. Texas barbecue is so dear to my heart I'm feeling an extensive review coming on. Let me finish this paragraph by mentioning a significant historical fact regarding bbq just a few blocks from here. " The" king of Dallas barbeque started not far from here. In 1935 Red Bryan started a BBQ business and became a legend. Passing the torch to his son Sonny Bryan who solidified the elevated smoking of brisket in Dallas. That era has passed and now.... We have a new movement. With the price of beef,personnel retention,operating expenses,it's gotta be one of the hardest operations in food service. But,Red,Sonny and others did it and the bar is raised for anyone else who expects you to patronize their establishment and pay today's prices. I was very disappointed in the brisket here. I should have taken it back but,wasn't in the mood. While the owners may be connected to Lockhart Texas BBQ royalty,you can't rest on your laurels. Let's give them some time to tweek the operation before we try again. At this time it's a no go.
One of the few famous BBQ places I had not tried in the two years I have lived here. (Side note: this is ALWAYS a great place to stop for a bathroom break when you are visiting the Bishop Arts District.) We came in for a snack and, of course, left completely full. My friend absolutely loved the burnt ends. He liked them so much that after we finished the first order, he went back and got a second one, plus some brisket and elote. I thought everything was good, but I will say the menu felt a little limited. This is definitely one of those places where I am glad I finally tried it because it is part of the local DFW BBQ experience, but it is probably not somewhere I would specifically seek out again. That said, if someone wanted to go, I would go again without complaint. I DO want to try the Burndt end bloody mary!
This was delicious! Exactly hits the spot when I was craving bbq. Meat was tender, bbq sauce yummy and plentiful, and the Mac and cheese was phenomenal!
My husband and I had plans to eat somewhere else, but when we walked by this spot, I had to stop in to try some brisket. Along with our brisket, we also tried their Spicy Mac 'N Cheese, and Bacon wrapped Jalapeño. The jalapeño was far too spicy for me. I'm not a big fan of the Velveeta style mac and cheese in Texas, but theirs was one of the better ones I had on my trip. The spice was a nice addition. The brisket was obviously the star of the show. We went to several BBQ spots while we were in the area for a week and this brisket was hands down the best. It has been a month and I'm still thinking about it. My only regret is that we got a small portion since we had dinner plans. You won't regret a trip here for some brisket!
When in Texas, you have to get BBQ, and I'm very glad I was introduced to Lockhart Smokehouse in the Bishop Arts District. The neighborhood itself is a great bonus. It's walkable, full of shops, and makes for a really fun area to spend some time before or after eating. But the reason you're here is the BBQ, and it delivers. The brisket was the star for me. Super tender, full of flavor, and exactly what you want from Texas BBQ. The ribs were just as good, fall-off-the-bone and well seasoned. The pulled pork was also really solid. I added BBQ sauce, but honestly it didn't even need it. For sides, definitely get the spicy mac and cheese, baked beans, and potato salad. All of them were great and rounded out the meal perfectly. This is easily a spot I'd come back to next time I'm in Dallas.
I've been to a handful of BBQ spots in TX and this one is average. The meat was flavorful and tender, but almost too rich from all the fat and oil. The staff was super nice, so bumping this review up to 4 stars.
Lockhart Smokehouse sits on a corner located in the Bishops Art District. I arrived on a Monday at 11:30. Parking was not bad, but it could be a challenge depending on the day and time you arrive. The restaurant was clean and the prices were very good. The BBQ was okay. I had a brisket sandwich which tasted as if the brisket had been warmed up instead of freshly smoked. I chose the mac and cheese, and it was good. The jalapeño and cheddar sausage definitely had more flavor than the original sausage. Service was friendly and the employees were welcoming.

We came here on a weekend and the service was not that great. The workers were not helpful when we asked specific questions about the menu. They were also sold out on multiple sides. The brisket was not flavorful and dry. The sides tasted as though they were purchased from an outside vendor. We did not feel welcomed and ate as fast as we could so we could leave. We will not be returning.
I am drooling looking back on this photo from Lockhart Smokehouse in Dallas. The deviled eggs were amazing, and the blue cheese slaw was incredible. My favorite sides I've ever ordered at a BBQ joint by far. The brisket was delicious and I nibbled the ribs dry. I wish I lived in Dallas so I could come back often, but I'll settle for the next time I visit. We played credit card roulette when paying and our cashier was very friendly to pick which card and play along. It's an order and pick your own seat, so casual vibes with delicious food. This is a must visit when I have out of towners visit, the food is always fantastic and the service is great.......WARNING! When you eat in, your clothes and hair will smell of bbq when you leave
We showed up at Lockhart Smokehouse right when they opened, so we were literally the first ones inside. The restaurant had that true Texas feel, with all the old-school western decor and the smell of BBQ in the air that made it feel like we had stepped into the wild west. The staff were super nice and went above and beyond. They gave me some really good cuts of meat, and I even got to watch them slice the brisket. That alone was worth it. We ordered half a pound of brisket, a jalapeno popper, with mac and cheese. The popper was incredible. Creamy filling inside, wrapped in that sweet candied bacon with a smoky, slightly Cajun flavor. The mac and cheese had a nice spicy kick too and was super comforting. But the brisket... WOW. Tender doesn't even explain it. The meat practically fell apart. It was juicy and had that deep BBQ flavor. And those little pieces of fat, those were my favorite. They melted into the meat and made every bite richer and almost buttery. This was the moment Texas BBQ finally made sense to me. That brisket was out of this world. read more
Lockhart is a well known but casual and unassuming BBQ restaurant. No nonsense service, food best ordered by the pound. We had the brisket and ribs. The ribs were good but I've had better. The brisket though, was just beyond reproach. I went for dinnet after having a considerable lunch and ended up eating a whole pound of brisket almost without noticing. No sauce, not even a pause for a drink. I highly recommend this place. read more

Hey Lockhart Smokehouse! (And I'm curious WHY you are called Lockhart - 'cause I used to live in Austin, TX, and going to Lockhart for BBQ was one of our favorite Friday afternoon excursions...) The vibe in this place is really great. The people are friendly. Downtown Plano is cool. The restaurant and bar area are clean, well-attended, and the food and drink are all good. So why only 3-stars? To be fair, I came here on a weeknight around 6:30pm, which is not the best way to judge a BBQ place. I will try to come back on a Friday at lunch time, and I hope things will be epic. Bottom line, I wasn't blown away by the meats! They were well cooked, but the flavor just didn't impress. The Sause (sorry, I'm a Rudy's loyalist) was tasty, but didn't blow my mind. A nice sweet + smoky flavor that worked better with the Spare Ribs than the Brisket. (Another minot note -- I know a lot of BBQ places eschew Baby Back Ribs for Spare Ribs. Lockhart only does Spare Ribs.) Would I come back? 100% Would I recommend that you go here? 100% I have to say the bartender was terrific, and the pit masters were super friendly, so no dis on the staff. I was just hoping for "oh my god" BBQ and didn't quite get there. Still a great visit. read more

Continuing on our Texas hunt for the best Texas barbecue we went to Lockhart smokehouse. There, we got their weekly special, which was a brisket pastrami, their brisket, as well as some baked beans and mac & cheese. The mac & cheese was very standard. It wasn't anything special. The baked beans were all good but again nothing special The really neat dish that they offered which was the brisket pastrami was really tender and it's more so of a marinated brisket and there isn't really much of a pastrami vibe except for its vibrant pinkish color. The brisket was very tender, but a bit too fatty in some spots. Still, very soft and it just falls apart really well. Nice staff and quick service. You order your meets at the back of the bar. read more
The deviled eggs were so good. I have never seen brisket flavored deviled eggs and these were amazing. The beans were also great. I ordered a quarter pound brisket and it was enough for me. Snagged street parking on a monday night right next to the restaurant and there was no line. Mac and cheese was a little too gooey for my taste, but still good. read more
Ordered catering for my sons' birthday party and the food was phenomenal. I ordered brisket, ribs, and salmon for the main courses along with mac and cheese, baked beans, and Caesar salad for the sides. The food was amazing and everyone loved it. The meat was awesome and the blue cheese coleslaw was slap yo mama' good! The prime rib (seasonal) was a standout star. Deep flavor in the crust, big globes of delicious fat, and super juicy soft medium rare meat. Turkey was super moist and a white meat cut - so that's always impressive. Pork ribs were good, not great. I have yet to find pork ribs the way I like them in the 20+ Texas bbq spots I've been. I hesitated between 4 and 5 stars, but the in-house bbq sauce was amazing and the service was probably the friendliest I can recall at a bbq place in quite some time. Located in the ultra cool bishop arts, you would not expect to find grade premium Texas BBQ - yet here it is! Very fun ambiance. The walls are covered in cool Texas stuff. Not cheap but not expensive. I will be back if I'm in the area! read more

Sunday night dinner. Restaurant isn't full and there's barely a line. Service was extremely attentive and kind. Meat * Jalapeño popper (5/5) * Brisket (3/5) - some fatty, some super lean * Ribs (2/5) - so dry Sides * mac n cheese (5/5) * cole slaw (4/5) Clean up service was great, we were checked on multiple times. This place was delicious! As a foodie from the north, I always make it a priority to get some good Texas bbq when I'm down here. Terry Blacks blew my mind, and Lockhart followed it up well with some generous portions, succulent seasonings and a flavorful array of smoked meats and sides. Everything was very good. Nothing was excellent. That's my only negative comment. This place does everything very well, but nothing really blew me away. Texas is known for its brisket, and yet the brisket at Lockhart was good - just not like mind-blowingly good. If you're a diehard BBQ fan and are expecting excellence, Lockhart might not be the place for you. But pretty much anybody else outside of this sphere is sure to be wowed by their powerfully aromatic spread of tender, salty, heavily seasoned meats. read more

Quality TX brisket with salt and pepper bark. The Kruez Original sausage had good flavor without being overwhelming. The service is quick. Pay at the counter while they slice the meat. Lots of neon lights for cool vibes. read more
I'm back a year later and it's a ghost of what it was. Ribs dryed to the point of becoming beef jerky on the ends. Chicken is smoked but flavor only on the skin. It's almost as if someone has lost their love for cooking. Bartender was not knowledgeable about the drinks. At minimum she should know which beer goes good with their bbq. The pic I have is of the olden day when people would waiting and line up outside for their food. read more

It's been a while since I've been back, so I was excited to stop by and get some BBQ. Unfortunately, I was disappointed this time around. The potato salad recipe has changed and the portions are noticeably smaller. The brisket was overcooked, and while two of the four ribs were a solid 10/10, the other two were so tough I couldn't even chew through them. This used to be one of my go-to spots to recommend to anyone visiting Texas, but now I'll have to find somewhere else. The prices are too high to be serving food at this level of quality. read more
Tasty BBQ, Cold beer. Friendly staff. So you're busy and can't drive to the Texas capital of BBQ, Lockhart, Texas. I get it. No problem, drop into their remote location, Lockhart BBQ in The Bishop Arts District of Dallas. They're perched on the corner of Davis and Bishop--next to the tattoo parlors--and act as the gateway to Dallas' most eclectic neighborhood. Lockhart has a full bar (lots of local beers on tap), seating enough for a crowd, and damn good BBQ. The adventure starts around the corner and in the back. No trays. No dishes. No utensils. Just bbq wrapped in paper as god intended. I had their Pork ribs, sausage, and some potato salad. It didn't suck. In fact it REALLY didn't suck. You're gonna wanna get some of that and put it your face. Good stuff. Don't go late in the day cause those who know will have gotten there first and left you without. Be sure to get a beer, cause bbq without beer is something a yankee would do. Their beer is served in mason jars, cause that's how beer in a bbq restaurant should be. This is a place for men with beards and the women who love them. Get in there and enjoy! read more

Honestly for my first time in Texas I was expecting some great bbq and I heard about this place. It was a little disappointing. The food wasn't the best. Ribs were dry, brisket wasn't very flavorful and the jalapeño didn't make sense. It was stuffed with "brisket" but it just looked like mush. Best part was the Mac n cheese. You go up to the cashier and order at the window. And all the food is ready and they just give it to you wrapped in paper. Is that normal for bbq places in Texas? I thought it was weird. Place itself is chill and people working were friendly. read more

This location is on a corner and parking is street parking or a lot near by for a choose your own adventure. There are 2 entrances and you walk to the back to order and receive your food and can grab a table after you order. There is also a full bar. Ordering and receiving the food was pretty quick. They slice up your portions as you order. The brisket was a little fatty, the ribs were a little salty and the potato salad was a little tangy. My husband loved his 1/2 chicken. It is a nice option to be able to order a drink if you want. You can grab silverware and condiments from the island in the middle of the restaurant. There were plenty of seating options for various group sizes. read more
