Visiting Oceanside from out of town my BF found this place and luckily it was busy at the time because we were directed to the downstairs bar. Right up our alley! Wonderful and obviously local hangout but we still got to order off the main restaurant menu. I'd highly recommend the bar seating if you're not looking for a romantic and quiet dinner experience. Been coming for years except for the last few years we hadn't been there. Walked in and hostess area looked unkempt. That was my first clue. The place was run down. We both ordered filets and immediately knew it had to be under new ownership. The whole plate looked unappetizing. There were 14 of us for dinner on a Saturday evening, and I had made the reservation a couple of weeks in advance. We were seated promptly, and our server, Darian, came to ask if we wanted water. Next came the rolls - 6 for a table of 14, I asked for more and 8 more were brought out. After 45 minutes our drink order was taken, we were told they have a full bar, nice. I ordered an old fashioned - the bourbon was present, but which respectable bartender puts a maraschino cherry in this cocktail?! Outrageous! Food orders taken - table side salad is solid and Darian did a good job of preparing what each person requested. Our entrees arrived slowly. Three people did not get what they ordered - medium well when rare plus requested; t-bone when porterhouse ordered; and breading when gluten free requested. My side of vegetables were shredded carrots and green beans, not a zucchini to be had. My salmon was dry (not smart to order fish at this steakhouse). Onion rings were delicious. If ordering broccoli, beware as it come like a miniature tree without the stalk being trimmed. The lemon cake and turtle cheesecake were average. Service was slow, but I blame management for this - assigning a single server to a group of our size was not well thought out and inconsiderate of the server. She was pleasant and helpful - the rare plus strip was comped; the porterhouse replaced with filet mignon. This is an average place which probably get business because it has been around for so long and the ghost story. Didn't see a ghost but did see some cobwebs, and a couple of broken chairs (replaced on request). Two stars because Darian did a great job. read more

thanksgiving takeout was 1 ice cream scoop of potatoes, 1 ice cream scoop of stuffing, tiny bit of gravy, hardly any cranberries, small portion of turkey, 15 slices of carrots. Small salad with lettuce and cheese only. two dinners $80 with tip, biggest rip off ever and that cost nothing to make. I had Filet Mignon years ago and the dinner was terrific. We were a table of 9 night before Mother's Day to avoid the crowd but it was still super busy and packed. We had lemon drop martinis at the bar while waiting and glad we did the drinks tasted great. Our server was Jeanine who was a pro, handled our table with ease even if it seemed we asked her the same questions about the menu too much, too often. The busboys were also quick in refilling drinks, bread, butter and supplying to-go boxes. The ribeye steaks were fine according to everyone's request, so was the pork chop, however the prime rib and my shrimp scampi pasta was mediocre, bland and tasteless. Both shrimps and noodles were hard, dry, over cooked. Prime rib was blah, just a thick slab of meat, nothing to rave about. Clam chowder was runny and salty. Artichoke dip and calamari were alright. Worst steak I have ever had. I asked for rare and got a medium well cooked extremely tough porterhouse steak. My au gratin potatoes were mediocre. The veggies were soggy. This review is only about the service. Went there last night for a friends birthday. We had reservations. It was 3 families. The entire time we all felt rushed by our waitress Carie. She was very rude and telling us what we should order and questioned when we wanted what we wanted. The way she talked to our children was uncalled for. They said she made them feel stupid. Our 15 year old had a question about the pepper pot soup. And Carie preceded to tell her the salad is more for you. I'll get you the salad. I'm sorry but you don't know her and what she likes. So many years coming here and many memories. Unfortunately, the last three visits have not been successful. Though the service has always been good, the food is consistently going down hill. The Salad wheel which my entire family always looked forward to was small and though the produce seemed fresh it was the only thing I actually enjoyed about the dinner. We had to send back the clam chowder ( water) my sister-in-law basically had to saw through her steak and, I discovered a partial hidden hamburger bun under my chicken dish ( there is no hamburger bun belonging to my entree). I don't typically leave a poor review even when it's deserved because every restaurant has an off night; however, I simply can't let this one pass. My party of 4 walked in and the hostess, after confirming our reservation, attempted to gather 4 menus. It's possible I misunderstood the situation, but it looked as though the manager prevented her from taking 4 menus and only allowed her to take 2. Affer we were seated, the hostess said she'd bring 2 more, which never arrived. After waiting nearly 10 minutes for the promised menus, a member of my party noticed menus on an empty table. He picked them up and brought them to our table just as the manager was escorting a large group to that same table. I'm not sure if the manager thought he was being funny but he made a motion like he was going to thwack my companion on the back of the head. My companion said "really?!" to which the manager said "Yeah, really! I don't have enough menus" and then made the motion again. The restaurant was not full so why were there not enough menus to go around? The lovely, pleasant waitress came to take drink and appetizer orders and unfortunately for her, my companion unloaded on her. She was very professional throughout and seriously would have been within her rights to ask us to leave. My companion DID apologize to her after realizing she was the wrong person to be directing his anger at. Now to the food. We ordered the following: salad and filet medium rare, soup and filet medium rare, salad and wagyu medium rare, salad and filet medium rare. Salads appeared to be nearing the end of their freshness date and all were over-dressed. 2 filets were well prepared however 1 filet was overcooked and the wagyu was improperly prepared as well as being very fatty and gristly. The waitress offered to comp one of the filets but we chose to pay because she shouldn't have had to comp anything. We won't be back which is a shame because we've always enjoyed our meals here. 1 star for Zach, the manager who just ruined what should have been a nice night out with friends. 3 stars for the food. 5 stars for the waitress. Fast forward an hour and we were requested by the management to leave and vacate the premises because (para-phrasing) we were causing too much noise. Mind you: we were upstairs having a peaceful and normal gathering (without any raucous whatsoever)... "All" diners were downstairs at the time. I was there today and I could hear people complaining about their prime rib being tough and chewy and when I finally got my prune rib, it was the same. I paid $32 for a piece of prime rib. That was tough and chewy. I've been coming here a lot of years, but this is definitely the worst I've ever had here. I am so dissatisfied as a frequent diner to have received this on the day before Christmas Eve. It was horrible and I don't know what to say. You need to look at your reviews there were people complaining in the diner, dining room. I will never go back there again. First off why is no one talking about the smell of Mold that hits you the minute you open the door? My husband and I went for our anniversary dinner and won't be doing that again! Front greeter obviously didn't want to be there. Placed our order. Husband ordered a Med/well Filet and I the Med Rare (Leaning more rare) Ribeye and both had tableside salads. Bread was so hard I had trouble cutting it. Salad was aged and leaves had a pink tinge and some creepy leaves. Picked those out as best I could. Steaks arrived and mine was overcooked. Told waitress and she asked me to cut it and show her. Did she think I was lying? She said that was med. I told her when I ordered I asked for it to lean more rare. She said Cooks cant do custom orders & this is all they do. I would have bumped to rare had I been told. As we were eating I looked at my husbands Med/well filet and it was pinker than my steak! He just said I know. HOW DOES A STEAKHOUSE NOT KNOW HOW TO COOK A STEAK TO ORDER? For the prices they charged for these meals they should be ashamed of the food that was put out of the kitchen. Had a reservation for 6:30 on Tuesday was seated promptly. We were visiting from out of town and looking for a great dinner. Waitress came and took our drink order brought back mine spilled some and immediately said they overfilled it. Ordered appetizers got the combination appetizers while the potato skins and calamari were good the mushrooms were not...we ate them because we do not like to waste food. Salads came out just the regular skimpy Cesar salad nothing spectacular. Food came out. While the steaks were good the mashed potatoes were flavorless and the veggies were way overcooked. The chipotle Mac n cheese was burnt to the point the noodles on top were crunchy. Our glasses sat empty for a long time. With what we paid for that dinner it was a big disappointment. Had no idea that we had to make a reservation to sit in the main dining room, so when we arrived, we were directed downstairs into this tiny bar area where tables were cramped and such. We were lucky enough to arrive at the right time and grab one of the only tables left, as 10 minutes later, there were people literally standing over us, waiting for tables to sit at (can you say, uncomfortable??). I got a make your own salad type thing, which was great...except our waitress was busy so the tray with the salad and toppings was sitting in the corner where people were standing and waiting....so it made me a bit uneasy since people were literally breathing over it and passing menus and such over it (did not seem as though the workers were very aware of food safety in that regard). I got the salmon, which was decent. My husband got a steak which was okay. Our impression at the end of the day was that everything was fine, but it wasn't anything special. read more

I go here a couple of times a month. We love the atmosphere even though it's a bit old and run down. It has charm, not like cookie cutter chain restaurants. A great deal is to pay the $7 split charge on an entree, then you get an extra table side salad and an extra side. That's more than enough for two people. We went there on New Year's Day hoping to have a nice meal to start the new year. We ordered two prime ribs, a Cajun lamb appetizer. We were there before 6pm and the restaurant was not busy yet. The prime ribs came out like they have been sitting out for a while, they were not even warm when they should be hot. The Cajun lamb was over cooked and burnt. When I ordered the prime ribs, our server asked me what side dish I wanted. She told me choice of side salad, pea soup or clam chowder. I asked her if they were included and she said yes. So I choose the clam chowder. When the bill came out there was a $1.00 extra for the clam chowder. When I questioned our server, she said it's included. Then she said it's included with a $1.00 extra for the soup. I don't mind paying $1.00 more but she should have made it clear when I ordered instead of saying it's included. I used to like this restaurant but there are better restaurants in the area that I will patronize instead. read more
