Lately I've been into going to coffee shops after i get out of class. I don't know what it is that makes it so appealing probably the free wifi or the fact you have easy access to caffeine, both one in the same right. But i do love stumbling upon your non-starbucks coffee shop, that has a cozy atmosphere that gets the creative juices flowing. Hungry Ghost has that appeal to it , the staff is friendly and the prices are what you expect for the neighborhood. The guy at the front counter doesnt seem like he wants to be here. Unfriendly, unhappy, douchy, pretentious, to sum it up - a total jerk. The guy making the coffee is a ray of light that unfortunately cant overpower the dick at the counter. I wanted to give this place a try instead of my usual oslo cup at greene market. This is my first review on this crazy site. (I'm from Melbourne, Australia and 'Yelp' hasn't really caught on as much as here it seems). In any case, I'm a traveling barista and have been across the entirety of this country these past several months looking for the best of the bean that this country has to offer. After shot after shot after shot from Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, DC and more I finally arrived here at the Hungry Ghost. They serve Stumptown here and, quite frankly, up until now that particular roastery wouldn't have made my top five. Now it's straight to the top. I met their head barista Patrick last week and he made me everything on the menu...(when I went up for my third espresso drink he figured out that I may have been a connoisseur)...;) In any case, Stumptown should be celebrating this place. If it weren't for Patrick and the Hungry Ghost I'd be heading back across the Pacific with underwhelming reviews of Hairbender and now I'll be singing their praises to my fellow baristas. (This was after a trip to their flagship location in Manhattan BTW)... Let Brooklyn celebrate the fact that they have the best espresso I've encountered on this side of the pond... Cheers! read more

Hungry Ghost is a cool coffee shop in downtown Brooklyn. It has a hipster-y vibe and a lot of interesting drinks on the menu. I came in here on a Wednesday afternoon and it was pretty crowded with people working on laptops and such. There is a lot of seating and the music wasn't too loud so it is definitely a good place to come do work. I ordered a chai tea latte and they made it with cinnamon, which was different, but it tasted really good. read more

Ok, so to be fair, I might be giving half a star as a freebee to offset some of the (in my opinion) unjustified criticism. However, just having moved to the area from the west village, I was surprised and delighted to find this place just around the corner from my new place. Bottom line: charming staff, tasty scones, and stumptown coffee is a win. Cool space also. To the people who are complaining about laptop restrictions, please be reasonable. There is no rule that says all coffee shops are there to replace your personal office. If the owner wants to create a relaxing environment sans chorus of clacking keys, that's his/her business. Just as it can be nice to have a neighborhood coffee shop to chill out and work, it's also nice to have one where a) you can get a seat without battling a mob of writers who are camped out there 8 hours a day and b) you can relax and chat, read a book or just sip your coffee without feeling like you've invaded a refugee camp for the recently unemployed (kidding!). Anyway, it's a great spot. Respect the owner's right to encourage the kind of environment they want to bring to the neighborhood. If you want to hang out in a great space with great coffee, come here. If you need somewhere to work with free wifi, go to starbucks, a library, or invest in a desk. :p It's not that I'm hating on the laptops, it's just that this particular coffee shop is not intended to be a workspace. Lastly, there is a laptop friendly counter toward the back. It might not be your favorite spot in the place, but those who need to work haven't been completely left out in the cold. read more

So far I'm loving this new cafe; a definite welcome to the neighborhood. The design is sleek, modern, and comfortable in a utilitarian way, conveying, "We want you to hang out for awhile and enjoy, but don't loiter for too long". Because quite honestly, how pathetic is it when someone hangs out at a coffee shop for 2/3 hours a day? Which leads me to the "No laptops" rule at the main table. I doubt I can expect this to last for much longer, as the uprising from the dead eyed, slack jawed lap top monkeys is already starting to be overwhelming. My advice to them? Stay home and work, or go to a Starbuck's with the rest of the cattle. No one wants to see that ugly, dim computer glow on your shiny, over caffeinated faces. God forbid people strike up a conversation, or let new friendships blossom. The owner(s) should be commended on their choice. Well done! A defiant stance against the "mallization"/ suburbanization of NYC and Brooklyn. As far as the coffee and food goes, well, it's Stumptown brew, you can't go wrong. The baked goods are very good (the ham and gruyere muffin is excellent, as are the baked molasses cookies with chunks of crystallized ginger). I'm looking forward to trying the other things. The staff is polite, efficient, and attractive. Exactly as it should be. Lastly, and most importantly, so far, the incredibly annoying stroller crowd has avoided the place. Maybe it's the layout, or lack of seating, but it's so GREAT to sit and chat with a friend and not hear, little "Jack", or "Chloe" (or whatever every single 30 something professional is naming their kid these days) whining /playing/ running/ crying and acting out while the parents (or nannies) sit there blocking it out. The Park Slope, Prospect Heights families really need to either go to parks, play grounds, day care facilities, etc. Or maybe Chucky frigging Cheese? Bottom line, coffee shops are not day care centers. So, recapping: Nice interior, great food, great staff, laptops discouraged, uncomfortable for child care loitering. I hope it lasts.... read more

I have a few highly important insights to share with the world at large, about Hungry Ghost. 1) No matter how annoyingly packed this place gets (and it sure does, from time to time... can we say Saturday afternoons when I'm desperate for a speedy caffeine fix in the midst of my work day while the rest of Park Slope is strollering around leisurely?), I have not ONCE had to wait more than a few brief moments for my one-of-a-kind, delicious, perfectly poured and proportioned soy latte. I don't know how they do it. It's some kind of magic. 2) They always seem to have at least two vegan baked treats. And, as a HUGE bonus, they are the ONLY place I have managed to find in the neighborhood that makes vegan dessert items without sugar. As a highly sweet-toothed vegan who doesn't eat sugar, I couldn't possibly ask for a better local coffee shop. And from a health standpoint, it makes my heart smile to know that the folks here churn out some decadent sweets with a whole-foods, nutritionally-sound twist. To the masterminds who might one day read this review: more maple-sweetened and/or brown-rice-syrup-sweetened vegan treats, please! I promise I'll eat them! 3) My experience with the folks who do the work in this establishment has been nothing but pleasant and day-brightening. I can see what people mean, it's not really a quiet working coffee place, more a socializing one. Decent cold brew and they did light ice as I asked. There's bike parking outside. They have kombucha and tea in addition to coffee. The baked goods looked good. They have three types of milk plus spy, a few sugars, honey, and simple syrup for your use, which is nice. Such good coffee! I stopped in here for an iced coffee on my way into the city, as I was in need of some shopping energy. This was the best coffee I have had in a long time, not at all bitter, with a really smooth and almost chocolately aftertaste. Yum! The shop is cute, simple and modern. Very clean. The display of sweets looked scrumptious, but I resisted, as we had just finished breakfast. I fear Hungry Ghost may have ruined coffee for me, as nothing has tasted quite the same since. read more

The baristas are good at making coffee, and though I cannot speak of all of the baristas there, the two that I have encountered a few times are cold, demanding, and generally unpleasant. I love that laptops are restricted to only a few locations, and most of the tables are for actually enjoying the coffee shop rather then using the free wifi. Decent cold brew, barista let me add flavored syrup myself which I appreciated because I'm kinda picky. The tables where you can't use laptops are now clearly marked, which I respect. First of all, everyone who's insulting their iced chais/chais are clearly used to whatever the crap syrup is they serve at Starbucks. As an Indian who NEVER gets chai anywhere because of how crappy the stuff people claim is chai, I have FINALLY found a place to get chai other than my own kitchen! The whole point is that it's not sweet so you can sweeten it as much as you want! I don't know what they put in those weird chai syrups but I'm sorry chai is not supposed to taste like a pixie stick. Second, I love what they do with their laptop policy! By having those little tables and the bar and no outlets I honestly think it is a polite and slick way of ensuring people work with their laptops for a few hours at a time and then leave, thus not turning the coffee shop into an Psych101 class. Freelancer? I'm pretty sure cafes were not made to be your office. When I work from home I enjoy taking a work break from my house for a couple of hours and work at Hungry Ghost as a break. Not as a 9 hour work location. Are you also upset that you can't get your work mail addressed to Hungry Ghost? It's way better than other coffee shops that just don't give you wireless passwords during busy times or don't have wireless at all. Also a shoutout to the new Canadian guy working there! I come here a lot because: - the coffee, iced or hot, is excellent. (Stumptown -- the iced comes out of a tap behind the cashier, it's downright delicious). - the muffins (raspberry ginger especially) and donuts are also all tasty. - it's right by the subway to Manhattan. There is, however, a lot not to like: - I've had some pretty hostile/weird service here. It seems to be all males working behind the bar at all times, and they're a bit too cool for school -- plus a couple are way too interested in serving/meeting the women customers. There's one guy who's particularly bad -- once he ignored the cashier reading out my order to ask a woman behind me what she was having, which turned out to be the same thing, an iced coffee. The cashier continues to read out other people's orders while this guy pours an iced coffee, continuing to chat her up. When he puts the iced coffee on the bar, I begin to take it thinking it was mine -- he grabs it out of my hands and says "it's for her." The girl says "uhh, he can have it, he was here first," but he wouldn't even look at me and handed it straight to her while smiling creepily. Chivalry is apparently kind of alive, but super awkwardly. (The cashier, the guy always wearing a Fedora, was really embarrassed to his credit). - As other reviewers have mentioned, the laptop on tables policy is very strange and annoying -- especially since they apparently have no problem with people coming in and having extended and loud cell phone conversations anywhere in the shop. If you're going to ban one aspect of people turning your shop into a home office, ban phone calls, not laptops -- that's way more annoying to the casual customer. - I'd stay away from the scones, they're often burned on the bottom, and generally just not particularly well-done. And twice I've had the carrot zucchini bars, and there have been strange hard/crunchy bits that I'd guess are bits of eggshell. Based on that I could see the hot food being pretty hit or miss here as well, as others have said. I'll keep coming from time to time, but unless I'm in a rush, I'll walk across the street to Gorilla. read more

I've tried plenty of places in the immediate area for coffee and a quick bite for my morning commute but nothing really compares to this place. Though it is pricer than other places, it's definitely worth it. I have tried their iced lattes, coffees, iced coffee, frittata, panini, chocolate croissants, and various muffins. All are delicious. I've been here a number of times, and every time I leave as a happy customer, so I keep coming back. I'm not a coffee drinker, but my boyfriend has come here with me a few times & he really enjoys their coffee. I've had a few of their different types of tea and always been happy with the taste. Their peanut butter chocolate chunk cookies are a personal favorite of mine, as well as the doughnuts from Dough. I've had a few of their sandwiches, as well as their soup, and everything has always been fresh, delicious, and just the right portion size. The staff is always friendly and they do their best to keep the entire place clean. Some times are busier than others, which can limit your seating options, but I've always been able to find a place to sit. Remind me never to a cafe west of Vanderbilt Avenue. It's not the cafe's fault, but the closer one gets to Park Slope, the less likely it is that you'll be able to find a seat to enjoy your coffee between the hours of 8 and 6. That said, the coffee here is tremendous--probably the most flavorful coffee I've had in a month. I hear Hungry Ghost pours Stumptown, as does Sit & Wonder across the street from my apartment, but whatever Hungry Ghost is doing with those beans, they are doing it RIGHT. I was quite hungry when I dropped by Hungry Ghost at noon on a weekday, and I was sorry to see that my only baked good options were a vegan scone and a cranberry twist. I guess get here before the hordes descend if you want to try the savory scones I keep hearing about. That said, despite being the second-to-last thing I wanted to eat at the time (a vegan scone being the absolute last thing I want to eat anytime), the cranberry twist was delicious: buttery without being greasy. I can't wait for the subway to start working on getting these laptop workers out of the cafes and into their Manhattan offices, because I'd love to spend more than two minutes inside this place. read more

While they do have Wi-Fi access, there aren't any outlets so make sure if you come to do work that you are all juiced up! There are also many tables that don't allow laptops--which seems to be quite popular around NYC. -Original Kombucha: this tastes quite different from the Synergy brand that I like in that it is more ginerale-ish. It's nice and refreshing but a bit sour for my taste. I think I would prefer a flavored one like cranberry to offset the bitter taste. But it's very refreshing. -Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookie: mmmmmm so delicious. The peanut butter is perfect and it's really nice and mushy on the inside. FINAL VERDICT: this may be my new place to come and enjoy some coffee/tea, food (their menu looks good) and some cookies. read more

I was so confused with the reviews of my fellow yelpers on the seating, Wi-Fi and tables availability and very rare mention of the actual experience that this cafe provides. Checked this place out today this morning to meet a friend over coffee. Quite nice. Nice ambience, nice staff, nice folks around. Nothing to complain really. I ordered an ice coffee which was good. Only that I like my iced coffee done with milk and sugar as served in the Starbucks and not adding the milk and sugar afterwards. But that is only me. I have been to Hungry Ghost several times to hang out with a friend and enjoyed it. There are laptop free tables for chatting over coffee in true coffee shop style and the decor is very modern condominium chic and the chairs are comfy. Their iced teas are good, the chai is good (made with a tea bag but pretty spicy which I like. The baked goods are great, try the chili chocolate cookie! I also liked the iced tea options as there are usually at least a couple. The prices are higher-end coffee shop prices (4 bucks for a chai) but the experience is nice and worth it. I also like how they give you those frequent-customer cards -- "buy 10, get 1 free," etc. -- i just cashed mine in for a free iced coffee. Woo hoo. Staff here is very cold -- and condescending. Too cool to be working apparently is the 'vibe.' It's a neat spot though. Very tasty. I was looking for a new cafe to add to my regular circuit, as I've cut back on drinking and wanted to vary it up from Gorilla, Konditori, and S'Nice. I've been here three times and let me add my perspective. The table with no laptops is an 8-foot table and along with two window tables, that's the extent of no-laptop seating. So the reviews about lack of laptop seating - ?? "Most of the tables" and "half the seating"? That is just wrong; it's one table plus the window seats. I'm typing this sitting at the long bar in the back which is plenty comfortable. There are stools but I've noticed when typing, I lean forward off the back of the chair, and thus have no need of an upright chair. Also, sitting back here I don't look up every 30 seconds at the people passing by. The only real problem is if you sit at the 8-foot communal table, and there are other people sitting there too, the table rocks with every motion. Even people talking and gesticulating over a shared newspaper does it. It's rather annoying! However, overall this is a great cafe, with late enough hours to be a place to go in the evening, and a good selection of items. Plus, the famous Stumptown coffee, which is a medium roast to my palate. read more

The best. The owner and the regular morning staff are absolutely incredible. They remember what I like, are incredibly warm, and best of all not judgmental when I stumble in at 6am. I don't drink coffee, but I do eat pastries, and here is what I'd say about Hungry Ghost's pastries: the pepper-cheese biscuit is an excellent cheese biscuit. It is moist and just a wee bit tingly, and the cheese permeates the thing instead of being blobbed on top. Quality. The chocolate chip cookie on the other hand, is the apotheosis of what is wrong with cookies right now in this city. The butter-and-chocolate-chunk arms race has at last reached Defcon 1, right here on Flatbush Avenue. This cookie has so much butter and chocolate in it, that you cannot pick it up. The part in your fingers will stay there, and the rest of the cookie will shear right off. Please, put some more damn flour in the cookie, and bake it a little tiny bit longer. While I'm at it, tungsten filament lightbulbs are a big waste of electricity, but on the other hand I like the color scheme. Bottom line, get a cheese biscuit if you're passing by. read more

I'm sitting in Hungry Ghost at 5:30 PM writing my review on my laptop. Wow, after spending two months determining what my favorite neighborhood coffee shop would be, Hungry Ghost stands out as the clear winner. I am even more fortunate to have moved closer, so its only a few minutes away. I was just introduced to Stumptown Coffee after moving to Brooklyn, and it is incredibly good. So good, you don't need any fancy latte' or cortadito, the regular kind is rich and flavorful. The food here also stands out among anywhere else nearby. Homemade savory pastries like cheddar biscuits and jalapeño cornbread are on the menu, as well as excellent muffins, strudels, crumbles and cookies, all unique and fresh. In addition to standard sandwiches, they offer inventive panini and lunch specials. The space itself its awesome, very clean but homey...just designed enough without being over-the-top or jarring. Some tables and chairs look like art pieces themselves. Also, check out the tilework in the bathroom....I want it for my home! read more

Drink menu is a little slim pickins, but what they do have they seem to do well--of course, this assessment is based off my one cup of coffee. They have a large communal table (no laptops allowed), a few smaller tables, a few armchairs near the windows, and a long counter (for the laptop-ers). The turnover seems to be pretty high so chances are you will find a seat. This is also a stroller-friendly, child friendly coffee shop, so don't be surprised if there are three little children clawing at their poor father who has been pinned to the ground. Did I mention that the coffee shop was large? This would explain how the poor man was pinned to the ground. Their ordering system is quick and efficient. You order first and by the time you reach the cashier your drink will be ready for you. This is also likely b/c they have no nonsense drinks. If I lived out in Brooklyn, I'd probably pop by often. Me, "Hey, do you make latte art?" Barista, "No, I wish I could." Hungry Ghost uses beans from Stumptown, accordingly, its base maintains the basic quality. Unexpectedly, the barista is fresh in making espresso coffee, he even made no foam in my latte. Not smooth, soft and foamy taste at all..., sort of disappointing. Top 25 is overvalued to this shop in a certain coffee guide. I would have experienced a better one if I insisted in going Gorilla Coffee. It's only one block away.
