I don't live in the area but I needed to get work done so I went to a hungry ghost, after purchasing a courtesy tea I was informed they had no WiFi however they claimed the location down the street did. I came to *this* location and purchased a courtesy snack and joked about having just walked half a mile (in a snow storm) to get work done. I sat down now having purchased something at two locations only to find out that this one doesn't have power outlets. Feels like my story would have made it seem like this info was relevant before i purchased more things. I was forced back out into the snow to find a place in New York City that isn't just a room full of ugly chairs. It's truly shocking to me that such a useless place can exist, especially with more than one location??? If I wanted to just sit and read a book or talk to friends I'd go somewhere nice. I recommend making it a little more clear next time that this place is not a coffee shop but a hole in the side of a building filled with "baristas" wearing hats so stupid they warrant a whole new review. read more

Had been going to this location for a while but yesterday's experience brought an end to that. Ordered a breakfast sandwich and went back to the table my friend and I were sitting at. After 15 minutes I walked back to the counter to ask, politely, when the sandwich would be ready. (It was a quiet late-morning, with about 10 people there, so the kitchen wasn't trying to fill tons of orders.) The too-cool-for-school barista gave me a nasty look, turned to the line chef, grabbed the sandwich and gave it to me...and then muttered to a customer in line: "People think this is McDonald's." Classy! Belittle a customer...to another customer. So yeah, if you employ clowns to run the show people will think it's a McDonald's. read more

Great coffee! They have stumptown coffee! Lots of study and sitting space. Not to mention the pastries, they even have cookies from Ovenly. The space is designed well and is clean, unlike a lot of the typical hipster coffee shops of Park slope where you question if anyone has wiped the tables or washed their hands in the last week. Very good coffee. Pleasant, cool, edgy service. I love that they carry the Stumptown carton of cold brew coffee with milk. You can also now add vanilla (or other flavored sweeteners) if you are a non-hardcore coffee drinker like me. (They used to not offer ANY flavored sweetener.) I like this place- it can seem a little pretentious, but in the nicest possible, Brooklyn way -- if that makes sense. They also have lovely vegan options for pastries in the morning which is very nice. I love the muffins with banana and zucchini best, but everything I've had is delish. read more

This used to be a great place to come and enjoy coffee and breakfast. I was here at least 5 days a week. They had a nice variety of breakfast (and lunch) offerings. Sadly, now they only offer pastries. Gone are the yogurt parfaits, ham and cheese croissants, and breakfast burritos. I usually go to the Hungry Ghost on Fulton. But, since that particular morning I picked up Bergen Bagels, I decided to get coffee at this branch, assuming it'd taste the same. But, unfortunately, the coffee here just tastes weird and watered down. Whereas, the Hungry Ghost on Fulton's is extremely rich tasting. Was disappointing and a waste of money ($6 for two cups). Tried to save myself the trouble from having to make my own, since I have to do that every day during the work week. Should've just saved myself the money and did that though. read more

My friend was coming from Long Island on the Long Island Railroad and I was coming from East New York so we decided to meet up near the Atlantic terminal and this place proved to be a convenient location. The service was stellar and the ambience was laid-back and easy going. It was a great place to catch up with a friend. I ordered a chai latte with almond milk and the banana bread made with wheat flour and flaxseed which was moist. My friend ordered a peppermint tea to help with her cold and cardamom bread. We both were delighted with our orders. My selection cost a little under $9. I would definitely return. read more

Came in this morning for a late breakfast. I ordered a ham and swiss croissant and a large Nitro cold brew. My daughter had a matcha latte and a berry and granola parfait with honey. The milk and sugars are tucked away on what looks like a bookshelf in the back. It took us a minute to figure that out. I was happy to see they offered soy milk to put in my coffee since I'm lactose intolerant. Many places don't. My daughter stated the matcha was a bit watered down and bitter so she added sugar to her liking. The ham and swiss was pretty basic. A step up from something like Dunkin Donuts. It was served on a ceramic plate for eat in dining. My daughter's parfait was served in a ceramic cereal bowl. I thought that was a bit odd. The yogurt used was nice and creamy and far from bitter. This place. No thanks. I'm new to Brooklyn and went with two of my other classmates to find a nice place to study on a Sunday. We walked in and there wasn't any place to use our laptops because most of the places were taken up by other people without laptops or the places that were available wouldn't let you sit at a table with a laptop. I can understand where they're coming from but I feel like they lose a lot of business by not allowing people to use laptops there. Another thing was we arrive right at 6:00 p.m. and I asked if they still served lunch and the guy behind the counter said they didn't serve lunch past 6:00 p.m. and I asked what time it was... and he responded 6:03 p.m. lol. I came here the other day and treated really rudely by one of the baristas. They have certain seats designated for laptop users and others that are not. Every single laptop seat was taken and there were about 10 seats open for non laptop users. I already put in my order and asked the barista if I could just sit in a non laptop seat with my laptop until a laptop seat opened up. She told me no and literally said that I needed to go around and ask people already sitting to switch. Really? You want me to around to all of your customers and ask them to move? Busy, but bright and airy coffee shop on that gourmet stretch of Flatbush Avenue. The baked goods looked amazing (ginger cookies with hunks of crystallized ginger, cookies loaded with chocolate, almond croissants) but I resisted this time. I had a large Stumptown coffee, blend unspecified, but it was fruity and not bitter, which I like. The service was friendly. They have one of those punch cards if you come often. They also have kombucha on tap. Why go to a boring chain when you can support a local business? And none of the preciousness of Stumptown in Portland. read more

Came in looking for a place to do a little work late on a Sunday afternoon. The first question I asked the barista was if they had wifi, which he said no, not on the weekends. Ok, fine, I can do some work without the internet. I order an iced tea (which was a rip-off, left more than half an inch unfilled from the top), and settled at the large table. Would like to note the place was not too crowded at this point, the table was empty except for one other girl reading a book. Within two minutes, an employee comes over and very brusquely tells me there are no laptops allowed at the table. I ask him if there's anywhere else for me to sit, and he says no and walks away. Welp, I walked around the corner to Gorilla Coffee, and it was a world of difference! They even let me bring in my iced tea, hooked it up with wifi, offered me a range of seats, had better music playing, and way cooler/friendlier/hipper baristas working. I came here for one reason: lately I've been working on a major writing project at a coffee shop on Rogers Avenue in Crown Heights, but I go there so often that it's starting to get embarrassing. I schlepped out here to Prospect Heights in the genuine hope that Hungry Ghost could be a great alternative. Alas, it's not. Turns out that Hungry Ghost poses as a laptop-friendly cafe (its website really calls out to the laptop crowd), but in practice the space has been very carefully designed to discourage lingering. There are no outlets anywhere, and the best spaces are all laptop-forbidden zones (which are, consequently, entirely empty while the laptop-allowed spaces are completely packed). To be fair, the space is really lovely (though Flatbush Avenue is not), and I found the staff to be quite friendly, in contrast to many of the reviews I've read. For plenty of people, this may very well be a four- or five-star coffee shop, but for my purposes it's just not. I need a cafe where I can sit and work (and buy coffee and food in the process), but too many coffeeshop owners think that's not a viable business model. Still, I spend an embarrassing amount of money at the coffeeshops I do frequent, and the longer I stay the more likely I am to buy a second or third cup, or a meal. I have no problem paying full price for a refill, for instance, as I recognize that because I hang out for a long time the product I'm purchasing is more than just coffee. The verdict? I'll just keep going to my standard coffeeshop in Crown Heights. I probably spend a good $150 a month there (ouch) simply because I spend so much time there. And why wouldn't I? I feel welcome there, since they actively try to accommodate laptop users. And, sure enough, that place is always packed and lively for exactly that reason. I'd be happy to come back to Hungry Ghost if it started to do the same. read more

Nice design. everything went south when I came in to find that people with laptops are not allowed to sit at the Tables!!! I called the place to find out that they were open to 10 am and they have free wifi. But people forgot to tell me there was restriction on where you can sit with your laptop ??? crazy!!! Wish i knew this before driving around for 15 min to find a parking spot! Sweet attendant at desk the West indian guy. But this will not be a place I will becoming back to . they said owner is looking for a community feel. What the hell is that ??? Cozy, laid back space, with cool brown decor and good coffee. I passed by there couple of times, on my way to friends, and always wanted to try it. The space is really nice and I especially like the platform with the two couches. I sat there for an hour or two to read a book and really liked the energy. They have long picnic table for groups and small niches for smaller crowd. I took a latte with soy milk and it was good. Recommended for all the people in the neighborhood to stop by and sit there sometimes. read more

I am a seldom Yelper, but the experience I just had at the Hungry Ghost really...just made me kind of angry. Here we go:: This was my first time frequenting the Ghost. i grew up around Park Slope, and dog sit here occasionally and really like to try the new places that have sprung up since I was a teen--I am now in my 20s. So, I get there and it's packed out--actually a good sign. Perhaps people (and by people I mean 30 somethings with tiny babies) really dig this place. From my experience, 30 somethings with tiny babies in Park Slope typically have good taste when it comes to snacks and coffee (just saying) and so as I get up to the counter I'm honesty really siked. I order the tempeh sandwich and here is where things go awry: 1. I asked the guy working the counter if they had avocado. He says he will check, and the barrister next to him points out where it is. He then returns from the back and says they don't have any. Okay, clearly he is lying because the lady totally just pointed it out. Maybe they staff is to busy / lazy to cut open an avocado, but I mean common--serious? I would have paid an extra buck for it! And, if the kitchen staff was to "busy" (doing what I'm not sure being that everyone before me had ordered pre-made pastries) to cut up an avocado, the dude should have just said "sorry we can't ad anything to that sandwich." There is no reason to lie to paying customers. Sorry, but there isn't. 2. I got the sandwich and walked literally 2 blocks--less then five minutes--to my house. Really it wasn't more then five minutes. By the time I got there, the sandwich was TOTALLY SOGGY. I mean, soggy in the kind of way a tuna fish sandwich would get soggy when it was sitting in your lunch box all day in middle school. Just inedibly gross. Perhaps this was due to the tomatos which looked/felt/tasted like they had been sitting under one of those lamps at a fast food joint. You know what I mean--horribly warm and disgustingly bland. Not good. And hot iceberg lettuce. Common people, yr killing me! It was like whoever constructed that sandwich made some really bad choices in doing so. And the tempeh was luke-warm. Everything was just off. Never again. 3. And of course, the gross thing was over priced and it took them like 20 minutes to make it. Straight up, this place sucks. I went to this place because my friends recommended it to me. I live in Seattle and frequent independent coffee shops. There was almost no where to sit, that's okay, good places are busy. I got a cold brew. I found a table end to share with people, things were looking good. Then I started drinking my drink, it was extremely sour. I thought iI could get through it, but like 10% in, I had to ask for a new drink. I give 2 stars since the one guy was very quick to offer me some drip, that's good service. But then I get back to the table to enjoy my new drink and I'm greeted by someone a worker telling me I can't use my laptop at that table. I have to ask him where I can use it, and he points me to another area where there are no open seats. I notice there was a tiny note on the tables but I didn't see it because it's crowded. I'd be more okay with these policies if they had good coffee, but this cup of drip started out tasting ok and ended tasting pretty sour too. Hungry Ghost is a coffee shop right around the corner from Barclays Center. I really like its interior design, it's warm and cute and fancy. The coffee they serve is good, and so if the food. The menu is appealing with a bunch of bagels and sandwiches, including many vegetarian options. I had the mushroom sandwich and it tasted really good! Why only 3 stars then? You just don't really feel welcome here. Many tables have a sign that says that laptops are not welcome (which is fine, at least it's clear). Service is quite cold - they don't call you when your coffee is ready, for example, they just let it sit on the counter and get cold while waiting for you to pick it up: no big deal, but makes a difference with places that are more friendly. Hungry Ghost is totally fine, and since it's my neighborhood I'll be coming back for sure, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend coming here on purpose. read more

No. Hungry Ghost is terrible for working and generally spending time productively. Not due to the coffee, or attractive decoration, or service. Not that. The boss according to his Buddhist beliefs apparently does not allow chargers. So working at the tiny side tables past the chatty couples and Fort Greene moms and odd paneled bar bench becomes an ordeal worthy of a koan or a shloka. One that muses on the futility of our daily pursuits, perhaps. Much like the throat of the unsatisfied Hungry Ghost, everything, though stylish and sparse, is built slightly too small. An awkward communal wood table, tempting hewn oak two person tables that always have several people and their bags draped over them. This seems like a perfect place to sate your hunger to get your work done in a stylish and beautiful environment, but the atmosphere is never quite right. On weekdays if one gets there at 7:00 there's the tempting possibility that you'll really get work done until they close at freaking 10:00! On a weekend, get there ambitiously at midday and it will be overfilled with families desperately getting their breaks in between dealing with the neverending caprices of their Emmas, Jacks, and Royces. And as people vacate, the 10:00 closing time looms ever closer! I keep coming back dammit, because of the temptation, the hint that my desire to work in a nice coffee shop can be satiated. There is nice coffee to be had and kombucha on tap for those weirdos like me who get excited about that (I know.) The waiters may appear haughty and overstylish, but are actually pretty nice. Of course I love the tree trunk tables, sparse though they are and when I snag them for a while at 8:00 at night, I get half my program done until my battery dies or the damn place closes. We get it New York, coffee shops are trying hard as possible to make themselves an unfriendly place for working people who tend to snooze if trying to program on their couch for too long. I went in to Hungry Ghost for a late morning coffee and bite to eat with my boyfriend, and came up against some bad service. When I tried to order a flavored Iced coffee, the barrista gave me an incredulous look, and said "Um, we don't have that flavor." and left it at that. There's no signage explaining which ones they do have, so I then asked which ones they did have. This garnered a snide listing of what they did have, to which I made a choice. I get it, you probably get asked approximately 1005 times a day what flavors you have, but come on man. I asked politely, and quickly asked which you had so I could make an easy selection. When my boyfriend then went up to order a Bagel and cream cheese, a different barrista tried to take his order, but couldn't hear him over the espresso maker. He repeated himself roughly 2 times before she shortly said, "I can't hear you at all, you need to speak up." The final touch was when he finally had placed his order for a plain bagel and cream cheese, we waited for probably 15 minutes. Around the 10 minute mark, that same barrista that took his order came from behind the counter with a bagel and cream cheese which we assumed was for us, only to have her give us a dirty look and say, "No, this is for me." before going to a table in the front and sitting down. All in all, this place could have been a local haunt for us (no pun intended) but due to the personnel being jerks, I'll pass. read more

Came here twice. First time my friend and I waited a long time for our sandwiches. I asked the Barista about it and she just said "they're coming." Ten minutes later she came over and said the "kitchen forgot" and asked us for our orders again. She came back with two half-way decent cookies to make up for it, but a 45 minute wait for two cold sandwiches in an empty cafe sucks. Despite this we gave it another shot today because they have free wifi and I needed to get some work done, have a coffee and eventually a meal. They have three designated laptop tables, fine. I ordered my coffee and waited for a table. Finally one opened, I sat down, and found my laptop was dead. I got up, searched for an outlet, and an employee noticed and told me tersely that they have none. It's no accident. They put plastic covers over all the outlets so customers can't use them. Some passive aggressive way to discourage people from staying too long, rather than just posting a polite sign or dealing with the fact that they are a coffee shop that advertises free wifi. read more

Went here for the first time tonight. Felt that the staff was very pretentious and rude. I noticed there are several other reviews that state the same thing. Now, I am from NY and I really don't expect someone to ask me how my day is etc. at a coffee shop. But after taking my order, I find it to be rude to just slam my coffee down, grab my receipt and just not acknowledge the fact that I just made a transaction with you. I do love stumptown coffee though so really can't say anything bad at all about the coffee. In fact their drip was probably some of the best i've had for the stumptown roast. I find the signs that say "no laptops" in certain sections of the place is tiring and pointless. People are just sitting there on their cell phones instead. So... what is your point? Overall, the coffee was good, I could do without the servers. I probably will just go next door to doughnut plant for coffee next time. So yeah, it's not really like the area really needed another coffee shop, and if you crave Stumptown it's not that far to Sit and Wonder where you can get it much tastier. But if you're on Flatbush, it's on Flatbush and they did the interior up right with a lot of dark wood and breathing room and a communal table. But the drip coffee is made in those huge industrial vats and tastes stale. But the people are really nice. You see my dilemma. But hold on everybody shut up I got something to say. HG has this policy of not allowing laptops at most of the tables. Which is like, great for weekends, no one wants to see a bunch of vacant eyed people hooked up to their laptops Matrix style. But during the week? Who are the charmed, carefree people sharing coffee and memories, warmly valuing each other's friendship at 11 on a Tuesday? They're miserable and at work. With us freelancers, we're miserable and at work and we're here, and we're extra-miserable trying to balance our laptops on a thin sliver of wood. My major problem with this place is that two uniformed Brooklyn Nets personnel were in here talking about Doc Rivers and their new duties tracking opponents' substitution patterns. To them, I offer six letters: GO NY GO. My minor problem with this place is that all three employees (male and female) were wearing expensive fedoras when I was there. But...the cold brew. I savaged Gorilla for offering a $4 11 oz. version that tastes like battery acid and comes in a tetra pak (wasteful AND disgusting!). Hungry Ghost's version is about six times better and exactly 37% cheaper (factor in the extra ounce). Most of the new stuff on Flatbush makes me shake my head and wonder. Hungry Ghost does, too, and not just because I thought the expression "hungry ghost" was typically used pejoratively. But I can tolerate the price point. I want to like the Hungry Ghost. I mean, I do like it. It's in a great location right near Atlantic Ave, Park Slope and Ft. Greene. I came on a Saturday morning and it was understandably crowded, with only a bit of space left on the bench that they have inside. The staff could be more relaxed as well. The peppermint tea I ordered was good, but I wish they had more than 6 tea selections beyond the standard green tea, roiboos, etc. I also ordered a cookie, which I regret as it was pretty bad. Simply too bittersweet, not even tasty. Overall, the vibe was a bit too stiff and not as relaxed (maybe due to the lack of seats). read more

This part of Park Slope/Prospect Heights is a notable coffee desert. Which is shocking given the surroundings but true nonetheless. It's a mixture of places that are pleasant but obviously could care less about their espresso (Konditori) and places that blatantly spit in your face with the combination of brand pretentiousness along with service and coffee that are an insult to their customers (Gorilla). Hungry Ghost is a huge relief, they serve Stumptown and both times I visited the espresso was fantastic. The one thing preventing me from giving them a 5 of 5 is when I ordered a machiatto it was served as an espresso shot with a dollop of heavy foam on top rather than a layered mixture of espresso and microfoam like their other espresso + milk drinks. read more

When this place was going up, my excitement grew with each passing day. A large, beautiful coffee shop with lots of space in my neighborhood! When I moved to NYC I stopped frequenting coffee shops as much (for various reasons), but lately I've been trying to spend some time out of my home office, caved up, in lieu of being in a comfortable cafe. Sip and Wonder has been my go to place for awhile, or Joyce Bakeshop, but they can often get crowded due to smaller spaces. So I had high hopes for the Hungry Ghost. So imagine my surprise, shock, and sadness when it was a let down. I set off with work, to be done on my laptop, eager to experience the new, cool space. Walking in I became more excited by what appeared to be interesting, sleek decor. The staff at the counter were very nice when I ordered my latte. And here is where things started to go awry. After picking up my latte, I noticed that the cafe tables, comfy chairs, and communal table were all full (lots of baby strollers--all good). So I found myself wandering to the bar against the wall. Not a problem! I usually don't mind staring at the wall because I focus better. Well, the bar stools were too short! I opened my laptop and found I couldn't type properly and it strained my wrists in a very uncomfortable way. I tried to stay there as long as possible, but I wasn't going to last long. Then I spied through the mirror a seat open up at the large communal table. Score! So I made my way there . . . only to be confronted before I had even sat down. I was told I couldn't sit at the table because laptops were not allowed there. Anyone used to working in coffee shops can imagine my confusion, so I asked politely, "What ever do you mean? At that moment several comfy chairs opened, so I said I would move there. Nope, not allowed. What the? Then I noticed that there are actually signs stating that you cannot use laptops in these spaces. OK, so maybe the owner wants to keep people moving through the space, but lets put this in perspective. My laptop is 15". I'm a thin person, so between my and my laptop we don't take up a lot of space. Yet somehow I am impeding the coffee shop mojo, even with the many strollers, bags, and various other paraphernalia that other people are allowed to have taking up space? And don't get me wrong--I'm all for people doing whatever they are doing in coffee shops, kids and strollers included. But a no laptop policy? I felt so unwelcome. Couple that feeling with the fact that I could now not actually do any work and I had to leave. Unless they change the policy, I can't imagine going back. The latte was fine, but I can get similar quality elsewhere AND use my laptop. It's really unfortunate because I would have gone there often to sit, work, drink, and eat. read more

Lately I've been into going to coffee shops after i get out of class. I don't know what it is that makes it so appealing probably the free wifi or the fact you have easy access to caffeine, both one in the same right. But i do love stumbling upon your non-starbucks coffee shop, that has a cozy atmosphere that gets the creative juices flowing. Hungry Ghost has that appeal to it , the staff is friendly and the prices are what you expect for the neighborhood. So i grabbed my chai latte , pulled out my laptop and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere. read more
