Don't ask me why she lives up there, I stick her in with the "nuts." She and her husband eat here often and were excited to show it to me. I thought from the moment I walked in I would like it. For one, it was super clean, the people were so nice, and it was tastefully decorated. The food was inexpensive, and really good, the "lunch" portions were OOC. We discovered this place because it was near my voice teacher's house in Avery Ranch. They have a great, inexpensive lunch special, with a good variety of choices, and high-quality food. Their wonton soup isn't full of the normal out-of-the-package thin wrappers that your average Chinese restaurant serves up. They are thick and delicious, with a fine-flavored broth. The food is not overly greasy, and it is always served in an attractive fashion. The only thing about the lunch I would improve is the egg roll, which I found tasteless. The real secret of Hunan Ranch, however, is their sushi bar, which only operates for dinner.We are from California and have tasted all manner of fresh, excellent sushi, but we were having trouble finding good sushi in Austin that wasn't overhyped and overpriced. This sushi was fresh, creative, delicious, and generously portioned. We were delighted and surprised! The selection isn't gigantic like some sushi places, but everything we ordered (maki, nigiri, and rolls) was top-notch. The prices are also completely reasonable, and don't make us feel like someone attached a sucker to our wallet for the privilege of having sushi. In short, we finally found our sushi place! I am very surprised by the person who said the service sucks, because every time we have been there (about 6 times now), we have experienced the best, most friendly, fun, and fast service. Hunan Ranch only disappointed once out of at least 30 visits and it wasn't the food. That night service was very, very, very SLOW!! I have been going there for over 3 yrs. and it's great. Got take out for the family from here tonight. We had a pu-pu platter, cashew shrimp, and szechuan fish. That was plenty of food for two adults and two small children. While this certainly is not the best Chinese food I have ever had, it is probably the best I have ever had in the Round Rock/Cedar Park plex. The good: The staff was very friendly and had the food ready when promised. The place is spotlessly clean and the decor is slightly more elegant than one would expect from a run of the mill Chinese restaurant. The egg rolls were awesome! Both of our main courses were very good as well. The bad: A couple of the appetizer selections on the platter could use some work. Namely the ribs and the steak skewers that were tough and dry enough to pass for beef jerky. Next time I will skip the platter and just get extra egg rolls. Overall an excellent dining experience. I would this is a decent spot for those nights you're craving Chinese. My friend and I walked in on a Monday night and there were only a few other patrons there. The food was delivered promptly and our server was attentive. The steamed dumplings were served lukewarm-slightly chilled, but we were so hungry that we inhaled them. The Kung Pao Chicken ($10) was delicious but it did have a high sodium content in comparison to the Curry Chicken ($10) which was a little bland but good with a pinch of salt added. One thing that knocked off a star was that they charge for tea. I suppose I'm used to it being complimentary, as it is very typical for Asian restaurants to offer it at no charge. They actually charged us for 2 orders of it, which really annoyed me. I mean, you're only adding hot water to the tea bags that were already in the pot.... I'll return due to the convenient location and the easy parking lot, but definitely won't be ordering any tea. read more

Soo.. I 've been ordering from here via eat24.com for the past couple months and decided to actually stop in to check out the restaurant for dinner tonight. Myself and the SO shared the Poo Poo Platter to start. First of all, its huge! Second it was presented beautifully. And lastly everything was hot and fresh tasting. The shrimp rolls were absolutely delish and I wish there were more than just 2 pieces. The bbq skewers where moist and not chewy. We then shared the Shrimp Neptune and it was pretty tasty as well. I really didn't have much considering I was so full from our appetizer. But from what I did taste I enjoyed it. All for $24.00 and some change not too bad. FYI- the reason we stopped in was to try the sushi, you can apparently have that delivered as well but I didnt think delivery sushi was such a great idea. First off, I'm a vegetarian. Received what I ordered, yay! That means they understood what my demand was. Ready for pickup in the usually 15-20 mins. Food Quality: Fantastic, very saucy and just tasted really well. Serving Size: Ordered for pickup 6 items for 6 people. One order of Veg Lomein can serve about 1.5 Adults; 2 orders for 3 people would've been plenty. The other vegees and rice dishes are good for 1 person. I was visiting friends in Austin, TX and they love this place, so they took me. I'm from California, so I had no idea where to go. I'm glad we got to sit down here. I love trying new restaurants/food, but I always have a go-to meal just in case.... if its Italian - fettucine; diner - steak and eggs, etc. For Chinese, its General Tso's (or Egg Foo Yung). The missus called it in and away we go for pickup. First impression - Big Restaurant (sorta busy). Super Busy Takeout (I walked in 6th in line - and a woman came in for sushi while we waited). That dear readers usually means good things.... Got the food and went back home. The food - sesame chix/white meat, general tso, fried rice (x2), egg rolls (with extra egg rolls) and egg drop soup. The missus loved the soup, rice and egg rolls but the chix was "caramelly tasting". I thought the Tso was soggy - granted, I got to the restaurant when told (15 mins) but I assume the food sat waiting for me (darn!) and like the missus, the rice and egg roll (no soup) was good. WARNING - the portions were HUGE! I mean full meal and full lunch next day. After receiving the Hunan menu on our door step, I'm SO glad we tried this place! I was pretty impressed the first time I tried it. I have to say my fav is the shrimp fried rice. The shrimp in the rice is larger than average! It's plump and juicy plus it came with bean sprouts which made it an instant hit for me! My only warning would be to stay away from the sushi. My brother loves that stuff but turns out it wasn't worth the price (at least don't order take out...might be better/fresher if ordered during dine-in). Anyways the rule of thumb when eating out (at least for me) is to always stick to what the restaurant specializes in...never stray or you will be disappointed!! Very good. The best Chinese food I've had in the cedar park area. The orange chicken was on Pinot. Great fried rice.

Pros: service was quick, waiter was awesome, clean and comfortable, portions are big. On the Pu-Pu platter the spring rolls, Crab Rangoons, nuggets and wings were OK but we were not impressed. Cons: The food. The meat on the skewers tasted like it was old and re-cooked. Impossible to chew. Hot and sour soup: very hearty, lots of veggies and tofu but bland, no flavor at all. Chicken Lo-Mein and Shrimp with Lobster Sauce bland as well, noodles overcooked and zero flavor. To be honest , the most flavorful thing we tried was the fortune cookie. We were a party of 7 and none of us could finish the plates. It is Pricey , there are waaaay better Chinese restaurants in the area, for half of the price. Wow, I *really* love this place. I have been on a hunt for great Chinese food since arriving in Texas 3 years ago. So far, I have had mostly mediocre ranging to pretty good. Hunan Ranch is excellent!! Oh, how I love their Eggplant in Garlic Sauce and Homestyle Bean Curd. The food is savory, spiced perfectly and just utterly delicious. I am always tempted to pick up the plate and lick it. The service is fantastic too. I don't know if it is owned by a family, but it has a family vibe to it. The servers, and all the staff, always go out of their way to make our visit perfect. For instance, I had my two young children in tow during one visit and they were mesmerized by the large fish tank at the entrance. Our server pulled bar stools up to the tank and invited my kids to climb up and have a better look at the fish...loved that. This place is super awesome and whenever I am craving Chinese food (which is practically always) we make the 15 minute drive to this location (even though there are at least 3 places much closer to the house). It is clean, great atmosphere, fantastic service, and exceptional food. I am in love. read more

Can't believe the amount of money my family has spent on this place to have them tell us they won't deliver to us anymore because it's too far now. We are 4 miles away from their restaraunt, but because it's a new division (Hazelwood) online orders always show we are out of their service area so we always have to call. Tonight the waitress actually said "If we deliver, it will take 2 and a half to 3 hours." Rude. Guess we will give our $200 a month to Hunan Chef, which is farther but more than happy to deliver to Hazelwood. Food was always great, by the way, but I needed to vent my frustration. read more

We just had Hunan Ranch delivered for dinner tonight and I have to say I'm floored that it has 4 Stars on Yelp. It wasn't terrible by any means. I would say it was only about a half-step above typical Mall Food court "Chinese" food - but at 3 times the price. We ordered cashew chicken with vegetables added. I also paid an extra $1 for white meat. The vegetables seemed like mix of fresh and frozen and the white meat was plentiful as were the cashew. I've definitely had worse - but I've definitely also had much much better. We also ordered Hunan Beef, which had a pepper next to it on the menu to indicate that it should have been spicy. It was not spicy in the least, even though I found two chili peppers in the sauce. It wasn't bland, but not great either. Both entrees were plentiful for sure - we could have fed at least 3 people with the two entrees. Each entree came with a somewhat greasy, bland egg-roll. The worst thing about the meal was the BBQ spareribs. My husband ate half of one and we threw the rest away. They were bland and gristly. All in all, I probably won't eat there again. I will try other places that are close by and try to find something better. read more

Ordered delivery because we live .2 miles away. Took over an hour! Called to check on it, ensured me he was on the way before verifying which order was mine. When the food finally showed up, it was cold and soggy. Called back to see what we could do. She told me the manager would call me back. After waiting a while, I decided to drive the food back, because I needed to get food elsewhere anyway. When I walked in, the manager was PLAYING ON HIS CELLPHONE. He then proceeded to speak with the lady in another language, I assume talking bad about me. Then, argue with me. Listen man, your food is disgusting, I brought it back, give me my money back. Food is mediocre. And that is all of the many dishes we have tried over time. Portions are large but food is bland. This particular visit we had shrimp lo mien and sweet and sour chicken. The lo mien was decent with enough shrimp but not very flavorful and the chicken dish was tough. They also have sushi and sashimi. We ordered the salmon toro the other night which is their premium fatty salmon. It was not fatty salmon. Not even close. When I asked if it was truly the toro, the server showed me the printed order. Yes, he entered it correctly but it was NOT like any toro I have ever had....visually or by taste. It was actually too tough to bite the large piece in half. We also ordered a sushi roll. Blech. This is an emergency stop for dinner for us only when we don't want to drive very far and are tired of the better choices in Avery. read more

Hunan Ranch is great when you want some pretty good Chinese food - fast. Whatever is in their Crab Rangoon is extremely addictive, and the Chicken Corn Soup is a good accompaniment. The Mu Shu Chicken is also pretty good. I'm not a huge fan of Chinese food overall, but my husband is, and this is a place we can both agree on. The service is pretty consistent, and it makes for a good go-to place when we need a quick, easy meal. It is very chilly, by the way, so bring a jacket. And whoever said it's not a kid-friendly place obviously hasn't been there at 7:00 pm on a weeknight. If you don't love the sound of kids banging on tables with chopsticks, try going a little later in the evening - around 8:00 pm. read more

What do teachers do when they get a lunch out? They go to the nearest Chinese restaurant. Hunan Ranch is pretty average in terms of food, but the friendly service definitely made for a good experience. I doubt I'd ever come here for dinner, but the lunch specials are pretty solid. For about $8 you get soup, an egg rolls, and a sizable entree. I stuck with what I typically get when eating Chinese food: wonton soup and sesame chicken. The soup was actually pretty good and I was impressed by the large dumplings. The sesame chicken wasn't bad, but it was super salty (not exactly surprised!) and a tad too sweet to be honest. Still, the portion was large and I didn't leave hungry. Our server was a really nice, older guy; I wondered if he was the owner or party of the family. He had an awesome sense of humor that left me and my fellow teachers laughing. That really made the meal. It just shows that good service can sometimes overcome so-so food. read more

Since I'm work from home lately, I decided to try Hunan Ranch for lunch. I've been before and remembered that I liked them and their food. I called in a lunch special, Hunan Chicken. It came with an egg roll and soup. I chose Hot & Sour. It was ready when I arrived. The soup is one of the best Hot & Sour soups I've had. Full of veggies, every bite was satisfying. The Hunan Chicken was excellent as well, plenty of fresh veggies and the sauce was great. I think I'll ask for extra hot next time, just to spice it up a little. We just moved into the area and discovered Hunan Ranch. Its a good American style Chinese food. The restaurant is clean and service is fast. Sushi prices are a bit high and not all that great. My husband loves the Chinese food. Overall, I would recommend as I am giving them 4 stars. read more

Good was pretty generic. I had the lettuce wraps, and really enjoyed them. My husband got the sweet and sour chicken, which is why I say pretty generic. Sauce wasn't anything special. Which is a big deciding factor for us as far as Chinese restaurants go. We also tried a sushi roll. I can't recall the name of it now, but it wasn't very good and overpriced. Service was also pretty slow. But they were pretty full so that may have caused that. Also, they have a fish tank right as you walk in the restaurant. Which is a great idea. But the poor fish looked like they were all dying. They had way to many fish crammed in that tank. So the entire time we were there I was concerned for them. Pretty sad if you ask me. read more

Tired of turkey and craving Chinese food, but too lazy --- er, tired --- to drive far, we decided to try Hunan Ranch, just a couple of miles down the road. Nice atmosphere, attentive and fast service (maybe they've been reading the other reviews on Yelp)! We ordered the crab rangoon and hot and sour soup for appetizers. The crab rangoon were crispy with a good portion of cream cheese inside, but if there was any crab meat, it was invisible both to the eye and the taste bud. If you're craving hot and sour soup, don't order it here --- it's essentially egg drop soup to which they've added a few peppers. There's a strong taste of chicken and no hot and sour flavor at all. We fared better with our entrees. Hubby ordered sweet-and-sour shrimp, and received a generous order of lightly battered, crispy shrimp with lots of veggies and fresh pineapple, and a big bowl of steamed rice. Your standard sweet red sauce was on the side, which is nice. I got the pan-fried noodles, which come with beef, chicken, and shrimp, along with a hearty serving of just-right stir-fried veggies in a brown sauce. Some of the noodles were slightly burned and crispy, but I like'em that way. My only real complaint about the dish is that a lot of the beef was tough, but other than that, I really liked it. We got out for $30 with tip, and except for the disappointing soup, the place fits the bill for your standard, run-of-the-mill, no-frills neighborhood Chinese joint. You won't find anything interesting, creative, or special on the menu, but you will find standard Americanized Chinese favorites, well-prepared and in very hearty portions. Great little spot right off Parmer in Avery Ranch. We fisrt found out about Hunan Ranch when we moved in next door and were new to ATX. Parent surprised us in our new home with food for the hungry movers. Now it's become a bit of a tradition to get food from Hunan each time they come to town. It's a fairly inexpensive but high(er) quality Chinese than most we've found. We dine in occasionally but mostly get take out. The lettuce wraps are a good way to kick things off for the emal. We also enjoy the soups. The entrees are large enought to split in most cases. The Hunan and cashew chickens are a fav of ours. There are numerous fried dishes and steak and seafood as well. All in all, for 30 or 40 bucks you should have enough tasty food to inspire the desire to loosen the belt a loop or two. We've moved since but still make the takeout a break-the-diet go to occasionally. Hope this helps. read more
