Zao has a new owner after being closed for about three months. So I had to try it again because I thoroughly enjoyed it previously. I went with my usual of garlic chicken since I had that so many times I knew what it would taste like There was a younger girl taking my order. I felt a little rushed, but since I knew I was going to have garlic chicken I just said that, and that was it. I paid her and then took a seat to wait for it to be ready. It was about 10 minutes or so, and they hand me my bag . Once home since I was very hungry, I dug right in. This was not the same garlic chicken I had previously. This was spicy. I mean spicy to the point where it probably had about five forkful and said enough because my mouth was on fire. The pricing went up a little bit and they have a few other options that they didn't have previously. I have only been there once since they have reopened, but I do plan on going again. This time maybe just an array of different appetizers.

First time picking up togo today. I ordered chicken pad thai and fried rice. When I walk in and gave them my name they were confused and said no one by that name worked there??? I repeated that I had a togo order and then got my food. The restaurant was empty so I don't understand where the confusion would be. Food tasted pretty good except the chicken pad thai had three large pieces of tofu in it. One piece would be an accident, three was making my order look bigger than it was. I am not sure I could recommend this place. Maybe it was the B team working on a Sunday.

Everything here is made fresh and comes out hot. Kung pow chicken and shrimp can't be beat. Great food at better than panda pricing.

They do not skimp on the sauce and you can taste it with every bite. The crawfish size is also great. A good mix of large and medium. They have a special on the crawfish as well. First time here. We've been on the hunt for all of the live crawfish, Asian Cajun style in Austin…read more I found out about Mala Chili via a Foodie FB group I'm in. So here we are. We arrived around 7:40p Saturday evening and this spot is bumpin busy and very lively. The outdoor patio was even packed. We were so lucky as a walk-in party of 2, a table was being cleaned so we were able to be seated quickly. Our server brought us each a tablet to order our food. I ordered the cucumber salad and general tso chicken with fried rice. My man ordered 2 lbs of live mala style crawfish $18 per pound (min 2# per order) with 5 shrimp. He also ordered the sesame chicken dish. Our food came out within 10 minutes, super fast. The crawfish took a little bit longer because I believe they make it fresh. Here's where it gets interesting. My man said his mouth was tingling and his tongue felt funny and when he took a drink of his tea it tasted super weird. Come to find out, the crawfish mala sauce has Szechuan peppercorn which has a numbing tingling effect to your tongue and mouth. We did not know this before we ordered. So He thought he was having an allergic reaction to something. We asked our server and she explained a traditional mala seasoning. I highly recommend that this is listed on the menu item as a forewarning to those that have never had the Mala live crawfish here before. Sadly, there were a lot of crawfish wasted tonight because He wasn't able to eat them all That seasoning just did not agree with his mouth or taste buds at all. :( But....The general tso and sesame chicken dishes were tasty! Another call out, We both ordered ice tea at the beginning and it came out pretty quickly, But no one returned to our table during our time here to offer refills or to check in on us after everything was delivered. I understand the restaurant was busy when we arrived but it slowed down while we were there. We may return to this location if we are in the area to try other dishes but unfortunately, he is unable to eat the live crawfish due to that one seasoning. Everyone was super friendly and I recommend trying the restaurant if you haven't before it.

The vibe is modern: very bright, well lit, with the lion statues in the front, tea pots on the walls and clean spaces. The nice thing is you can order dim sum even when the push carts aren't going, which I personally think is better since it's fresh. My wife felt like she had a ratatouille type moment when she bit into the sesame balls and the deep fried mince turnover. I personally thought while the dim sum had a good fry, it was about average on the flavor and texture, but like I said, some others in our group thought it was excellent. On the other hand, the main entrees, I thought were stellar. The Sichuan green beans (despite this not being a Sichuan shop) were the best rendition of the dish of anywhere I've had in town - very good fry on the green beans with smoky wok hei, well seasoned with the pickled veg too. When your five year old opts to eat just this and rice, you know you got something special on your hand. The seafood fried noodle is also very good - tender squid, shrimp and veggies in the crunchy noodle nest is a great contrast in texture, as well as a lesson in simplicity. The peking pork ribs are also incredible - saucy, not overly sweet sauce clings to the riblets and gives you something incredible to gnaw on. I prefer it in pork chop form, but this is stellar as I think I've only had this one other place that was even remotely close. All in all, great place for Canto food in a town that doesn't have enough of it.
