We have eaten here several times. The food is good and fresh. Very good hot and sour soup.

Skeezy AF. Customers order from greasy kiosks with filthy touchscreen menus that don't work well. Uber drivers are catered to but still were grumpy. No one at front desk ever answered questions. Folks yelled for service, but manager hid in back, no kidding. For real! One old guy asked for a refund. He was very polite but had waited 25 minutes. The manager refused to refund him until the poor man threatened to call the cops. Whereupon the manager refunded him in cash! Outrageous. A few savaged customers who had earlier tried to complain took their food after 40 minutes waiting and left, dejected by the entire humiliating experience. But they kept moaning about "how hungry I am" and "how I can't wait to just get back to my apartment now." They were too beaten to even muster hope for their tawdry sack of already oily leaking, paper bag staining order. It was brutal. A lot of good people were brutalized this night, and few, if any, will ever get the recognition they so steeply deserve. After all, their only crime was waiting forever for bad food and being subject to stress tests randomly applied by a grinning, absentee manager. Gotta admit the floor show was entertaining, especially when the screaming manager told the old dude "we don't refund here" and the old guy went all John Wayne mode on his ass. Didn't take long for the manager to pop open the cash register then! LOL! I about wet myself watching that bit go down, especially when the beaten manager waived the refund cash but refused eye contact. The old man called him an "as*****!" as he left, dropping the mic. Astonishing! So, 5-stars for the amazing local dinner theater show, even if impromptu (and all the more amazing for it), but the service was below awful and the food a starchy, gooey mess. The manager was just tossing it into a wok for a minute from a frozen bag, and you could see this "prep" going on from the front while you indefinitely waited. After our first visit which we thought the food was decent, we decided to give this place more trust and tried other items through Uber Eats. Their pho was terrible. Soup base is not anywhere near what pho soup should taste like. We also got Pad Thai and with shrimp and pineapple fried rice w. Chicken. The fried rice was decent and fresh. The flavor is good and tasty and the chicken is moist. The pad thai however was a flops. There's no true thai (fish sauce) flavor but what do you expect, it's not a Thai resto. Tonight I had the BOGO Beef Pho (on the UberEats app) and I picked it up to go. It's a decent size combo beef Pho. It comes with a bowl for the Pho and all the fixin's in it. All you have to do is pour the broth in and put the meat in as it comes in a separate baggie. :) It was ready for pickup before the set time which was nice cause I arrived early. And if you eat in and order from their kiosk you can get some good perks (like free soup w/entree etc) it's a small place but you can dine inside. The people are polite and nice. It's a great place if you want a bargain. I only wish that they would've given me utensils and napkins with some sauces to go hence the rating. If it's atmosphere you want, don't come here. It looks like someone set up shop in their basement. This place changed owners awhile back and it's not much better than before. The little ambiance there was left with the ild owners. Even the dine in food is served in takeout containers with plastic cutlery. And there seems to be no ice for drinks. No table service either and while there is a computer-order kiosk, they will still take your order at the counter. The printer wasn't working either, so don't expect a receipt. I had Moo Goo Gai Pan and while it is traditionally a mild dish, this had no flavor at all. There was, however, an ample portion. It was one of many "all day" specials (check my last paragraph) for under $9.00. My wife had Kung Pao Chicken and she thought it was pretty good, but didn't have the heat she was expecting. She had fried rice which looked exactly like the steamed rice but with a little brown sauce to change the color. They served each with a vegetable spring roll that was perfectly done. We asked for water to drink and were served Costco bottled water that was at room temperature. All drinks are bottled or in cans from a cooler which didn't seem to be doing much cooling. The menu said these were "all day specials " but the web site says they are lunch only from 11-2:30. Your guess us as good as mine on which is correct. I ordered the daily special of Orange Chicken. It comes with your choice of white rice or fried rice. Unfortunately the whole order went directly in the trash bin after a fee bites. The chicken was so tough it was inedible and the "fried rice" was just white rice with sauce mixed with it. No carrot, pea, egg or scallion. In addition my drink was forgotten. I did call the restaurant about my drink and was offered a full refund of my order for the inconvenience which I declined. It has little to no flavor because they're using frozen, previously cooked shrimp that were then refried, cooked vegetables, added sauces, and chili pepper on top then stir BUT not mixed together yet then served already! So gross! Shrimps with flour taste uncooked! Please refrain from ordering and squandering your money! They lack culinary skills! The owner was a white man, not an Asian. Oh! also when you try to bite it just like you're chewing a piece or rock. No wonder their business is doing so poorly. They don't know or have any sense how to cook Chinese food! I was told the manager was busy and could not speak. Nothing from the manager. The food is not prepared correctly. Super frustrated! I had an issue with an order on may 19th. The manager told me next time I order to come pick up and give my name and they would honor the free sesame chicken. I asked her multiple times if my name would definitely there. She told me yes. I called tonight around 4:45 to place my order. I gave them the order number from the 19th, along with my name. She said she had to ask her manager. She then put me on hold for 15 minutes. I called back and she had no clue what I was talking about. I re explained it to her and she put me on hold again. This time for 6 minutes before somehow it hung up on me. I'm called back again... she said I'm going have to put you on hold, at that point I begged her not to. But, she did. Now the best part she comes back 5 minutes later and says she is going to put me through to someone that was going to place the order for me, and she HUNG UP! Definitely give these guys a shot. I found this place by chance and was happily surprised with what I ordered (Kung Pao Chicken). The specific order was the daily special ($8.95) which came with the main, a serving of fried rice, and a veggie egg roll. I also ordered a side of hot & sour soup. The meal was hot, both from a temperature and spice level, and absolutely delicious. Since that first time, I've been back three additional times and I've been happy every time. I've tried a few other things and enjoyed that, too. No frills but exactly as expected. What could be better? The restaurant is pretty plain jane. You order at the counter and seat yourself. You can dine in or take out. I've dined in each time. Even so, your food comes in ToGo packaging. I'd prefer a plate but it is ok. Drinks are out of the cooler and served in the bottle. I happen to like ice. Also, not sure if this is good, bad, or otherwise but I definitely felt like there was pretty heavy use of oil in the preparation. This was my first visit to Hunan Chef and I was very pleased with the results. Sadly, there is no in-restaurant dining and all orders are "take away" or delivery. I stopped in for a late lunch and took it home. It only took about a 10 minute wait. They do an impressive amount of to go orders that I noted during my short wait. I really enjoyed the Sesame chicken with broccoli, an eggroll, fried rice and a cup of hot and sour soup. Everything was freshly made and still warm and very tasty when I got home. Ordered online. Their online experience is first-rate. I got notified when my order would be ready, when it was started and when it was done. When I arrived, I found my order on a table at the back of the dining room. I was greeted by a pleasant lady who handed me my order and thanked me. There were tables setup for dining-in. It's much more informal than previously (former owners). I wish I could say the food was good. It wasn't. I ordered "crispy" wings, wonton soup, hot and sour soup, and Kung pao chicken. Wings were really bad. Nice flavor but the meat was rubbery. They weren't crispy. Worst of all, the bones broke in the meat. Soups were average but by far the best part of the meal. They add twice as many wontons as most places. The Kung pao chicken was not good, but not horrible. It had this strange oily hot sauce. It was ok but I personally don't like this plate when it's prepared with crunchy carrots and celery. Just seems like prepackaged food I've had at other average places. I won't give up on this place. I was in the Cedar Park area and craving Chinese, especially after my first option turned out to be unexpectedly closed. A quick search of the Yelp app turned up this as an option and I decided to give it a shot. My first impression was the right one. Namely, a fairly typical Chinese options in a strip center. Since I was hungry, I tried a variety of options including egg rolls, fried pork pot stickers, and my usual standby of General Tso's Chicken. The egg rolls were the classic crispy option. Unlike a lot of places, the sweet and sour sauce wasn't the usual red goop and was the lighter orange duck sauce. The pot stickers were also crispy. The usual ginger sauce was replaced with what seemed more like a ginger sauce heavily loaded with chili oil. The entree was fairly standard and satisfying. My biggest concern with the place was the lackadaisical service. I had to ask for several things including the sweet and sour sauce, sweetener for my tea, soy sauce, and tea refills. These gaps might have been caused by the fact that I had two different servers. While it's not someplace I'd routinely make the drive for, it's not a bad option and would be even better with some semblance of better service. read more

I love the food in this restaurant and have for almost 27 yrs. My daughter and I went on Monday and we both were craving the Sesame Shrimp dish. The shrimp were big, not as described in a previous review. The food was fantastic and we both left for home full - and did not have to eat a half hour later as the old joke goes. The folks at Hunan Chef have stood the test of time. They've been in this same place since 2003 and have outlasted both local and national restaurants in the same center. This is an eatery that needs to hang on in Cedar Park. Check them out and remember, if you're concerned about the freshness of the food, ask what they had delivered that day. Please remember, the restaurants are battling CORONA delivery issues too. This place is in a little bit of trouble as are the other stores and restaurants along this little slice of Bell Blvd due to, not only COVID, but the construction taking place on the road that takes you there. So one must really love a place to go through such hassle, right? We can walk to this place from my neighborhood, but driving isn't really that huge a challenge once you get into the area. And you will want to do this because when my daughter and I ate there on Monday the place was empty. We did see a couple of togos come in, but we were the only sit down patrons. Went on 10/7/21 and the woman working the front desk told me it was $14. I didn't remember the price I had always paid prior off the top of my head, but the fact she gave me a flat number threw up the red flag. I asked her "it's never been $14 before why did the price change?" She told me along the lines of "no it's always been $14." When i looked it up on my cards mobile bank statements and showed her the multiple times I had come it was always $13.96, she told me "oh it's only 4 cents". I could give a damn less if it was 1¢, when you do shady stuff like making up your own prices as you go even if it's pennies that makes me not want to give you my business any longer. read more

I ordered the mixed vegetable spicy curry dish and I was so disappointed. It lacked flavor and freshness. The vegetables seemed like they came from a can and the broccoli looked days old. The curry wasn't strong in flavor like other Chinese restaurants I've tried. It also says on the menu that it was $9.50 + tax, but the lady in the front charged me $11.90 with tax...I felt like I was ripped off. Won't visit again and I'll take my money else where. read more
