(A Covid Review) Humble Pie is a relatively small pizza shop within walking distance of my house, so it gets major points for that. They have a small area that you walk into and order your pizza or beer, then they bring it out to you at one of the outside tables. They also have a ramp, so it's wheelchair accessible.
They have an impressive range of sustainable stats that include (taken from their website):
-Powered by 18 WA-made solar PV panels on-site; the rest of the energy comes from wind in partnership with Cascadia Energy.
- Process 100% of rainwater on-site, using 2 green roofs, including one edible (that's where our basil is from!).
- 100% of what they serve is either recyclable or compostable. They have a ZERO waste policy, keeping the ratio of garbage to recycling/compost produced at 1 to 30.
- 100% of their fresh produce is organic, and almost all ingredients are sourced from Washington (some are sourced from 1000 ft. away at Uli's!)
COVID:
They offer delivery (via Caviar), as well as dine-in. They have perhaps 5-6 picnic tables set up; each one is separated by a large plastic sheet in-between the tables. There weren't any kind of heating lamps (as of Dec 2020).
THE PIZZAS:
Their pizzas are thin-crust (brick-oven/Brooklyn-style), piled with fresh toppings; these are the kinds of slices that sag under the weight of their toppings. They have vegetarian options, and every pizza can be made with vegan-friendly cheese. I haven't had a pizza I LOVE yet, but everything I've tasted has been solid. So far, I've tried the Whole Hog (tomato sauce, mozzarella, pulled pork, pickled red onions, Beecher's flagship cheese), Mushroom Egg Arugula (mozzarella, crimini mushrooms, caramelized onions, truffle oil, arugula), the Field Roast (tomato sauce, mozzarella, field roast--which is sausage--, mama's lil peppers, fontina), and the Sopprasessto (pre-Covid) (tomato sauce, mozzarella, soppressata, crimini mushrooms, kalamata olives).
The Field Roast was my favorite because those peppers were OUT OF THIS WORLD with flavor. Like little flavorful of deliciousness every time I bit into a piece. The Mushroom Egg Arugula pizza was weird, though. It tasted okay but was piled HIGH with arugula that was perky as a daisy, so it looked and tasted like a pizza salad; it hadn't wilted at all and sort of filled your mouth every time you took a bite. One of my friends ended up just pushing off half of the arugula just to eat it.
Pricing is from $14-20, and a single pizza is probably good for two people. I don't eat a lot (around 1200 calories a day), so I ate the pizza over about 3-4 meals at 1-2 slices per meal.
PRO:
- Love that this place is within walking distance of my house.
- They offer a Loyalty Program that associates with your credit card.
- Super fresh (and typically local) ingredients... and they use Beecher's cheese! YUM.
- They really try to be sustainable.
- Solid tasting pizzas that are really fresh.
- Happy Hour from 4-6pm every day and Wine Wednesday (50% off bottles of wine).
CONS:
- By the time I walk home (about 20 min), the pizzas in the boxes hadn't retained much heat and are pretty much cold. I saw a delivery person walking up at some point with insulated containers, though.
- Thin crust pizza does not re-heat all that well.
NEUTRAL:
- There appears to be both street parking and bike parking.
- Brick-oven pizza is thinner but also has fewer calories because there's less bread.
THE VERDICT:
Humble Pie is a sustainably-built, efficient, well-oiled machine with tasty thin-crust pizzas and friendly staff. They offer a wide assortment of pizzas that range from vegetarian to vegan. Their options are good because their ingredients are so fresh. If your goal is to taste all kinds of pizza that Seattle offers, it's a solid pizza place and well worth the visit. read more
