First time visiting and Hugo's is not one of my favorite restaurant in Houston. We booked a table for a business dinner for 16 people and they were able to accommodate on a Tuesday. The restaurant was pretty busy overall though, even on a Tuesday late dinner time. All the food were absolutely delicious - my favorites were the baked oysters, scallops on cornbread, and roasted pork. The food were so flavorful and appetizing. The crepe and churros were so yummy and I loved it even though I was pretty full after the main entrees. Plenty of vegetarian and vegan options for my friends and they liked the vegan options too. My friend didn't like her steak finding it overdone but I liked everything I had. The waiters were attentive and patience as some people from my group were late. He let us know when the kitchen would close so we can make sure to put orders in on time. Overall it was an amazing experience and I would absolutely come back again! read more

Hugo's provides a solid Mexican food brunch experience! Came here on a Saturday at opening time. I had a reservation, though there weren't a lot of people yet at the restaurant. Half an hour into our meal, the restaurant became very busy. The pulpo which seemed to be popular on Yelp was a little too smokey for my liking, though cooked well. The lechon was excellent - it is a dish that I would most definitely order again. The tortillas were just divine. The huevos rancheros were done well. Our drinks, recommended by our server, were tasty and good complements to the meal. Our dessert of churros and chocolate was the highlight. I've had churros and chocolate in the way where the chocolate acts as a fondue element for the churros. However, Hugo's style had the chocolate more of a sipping bittersweet cocoa complement to the churros. I very much enjoyed this version of the dessert. Great service here - highly attentive and their service seemed to even step up as more guests arrived in the restaurant. There was a positive, bustling ambiance. If you want to start your day on a high note, look no further! read more

We went there on Saturday , wanted to hit a casual spot , the place where we dropped in for a girls night out had a long wait so thought of dropping by Hugo's , it was a long shot but we got lucky . We were seated right away! Food was awesome, the first raw fish dish was da bomb with beautifully presentation and taste to match , served with beautiful thick warm tortilla chips , the other plate we ordered was the lobster taco, one small taco but the flavors hit the spot. While I had a glass of Malbec my friend had the blackberry mocktail it was also crisp and yummy tasting . We were in mood for tapas rather than dinner so we ordered entrees and dessert! We ordered the caramel crepes with vanilla ice cream and the double chocolate mousse with a citrus sorbet and candied pumpkin seeds. Oh boy! The execution was bombastic with flavors and taste to match. Overall a great experience . But the waiter felt stiffed as we didn't really order entree or run up a huge bill . Hugo's will be an absolute must when visiting Houston in the future. There's so many positive things I could say, but just know that you will not be disappointed. The staff was happy to accommodate our large group with space at the bar while waiting for a table to open. We all enjoyed various cocktails, all delicious. Once seated, our server was an absolute book of knowledge, explaining the culture and heritage of the recipes used, and the culture behind the cuisine. As far as the food goes, I personally had the Barbacoa, and I will never find barbacoa that will compete with the flavor and tenderness of Hugo's back home. Unbelievable experience! My husband and I came to Hugo's after hearing so much about it for our anniversary. There was excellent customer service. Everyone was so friendly and they gave us free champagne and dessert for our anniversary. We ordered the ceviche tradicional which was very fresh and acidic. So delicious. The scallops were my favorite over a bed of soft, creamy cornbread, and my husband loved his rice with seafood. It was a beautiful ambiance and the staff was consistently masking. Why don't hugo ahead and enjoy it, I'd rather give this one a miss. It's not real Mexican food so don't come here looking for that. I don't know how many people that could afford to come here and eat except for the upper-class type people, and if this to them is Mexican food then I feel sorry for them, because it's not nearly as good. Service is lovely and some of the options are very imaginative and interesting, but to me it's just a place for inventions and appropriations and to sink a lot of money on a fancy meal in a fancy part of town with fancy surroundings. For many months, I've driven past this place wanting to go in and I'm so glad one of my colleagues decided on Hugo's. When I walked in, I was pleased with the vibe of the restaurant and the hosts. I wish I could remember our servers name because he was excellent! He had a very detailed understanding of the menu, made recommendations, and helped any guest with dietary restrictions. When the food came everyone was just about silent and there was no food left on anyone's plate. I would definitely dine here again! read more

I thought this place was good. Everything was very tasty with a lot of flavor. Even the sides was seasoned to perfection. The plantain chips they served were clearly home made and tasted better than any other plantains I've ever had in my life. I came here at 5:40PM on a Saturday and there weren't that many people there yet. My reservation was at 6PM but they sat me early anyway, which was nice. They only had valet parking available. Parking otherwise was a nightmare. I tried looking for street parking but you had to have a permit to park in any of the residential streets. I ordered their Tuna Apple ceviche special and their Pork Chop. The ceviche was very tasty and slightly spicy. One plate was definitely not enough. The pork chop was very moist and tasty. The brussel sprouts and sweet potatoes that came with it was perfectly seasoned as well. Service was incredible - when they told me that the Pork Chop was going to take awhile to come out because of how big it was, they offered me complimentary chips and salsa to hold me over while I waited. There's really nothing bad for me to say about this place. Give them a try. read more

Visiting our daughter from San Antonio and called with about a 2 hour notice for a table for 7. We had our small pup, Romeo, and quite surprisingly, they were able to accommodate us on their outside patio. Romeo and I had to enter thru the rear which we didn't mind one bit. I ordered the Oaxacan Rita to drink and loved it. It's very Mezcal forward, so if you like Mezcal, you will love it. For food, we started with the Taquitos de Pollo. I thought they sounded a little basic, but dang, they were so good! The sauces, guacamole... Everything was great. For entrees, I had the Barbacoa and husband had the Carne Brava. Both were great. I wish the Barbacoa had a bit more flavor and the Carne Brava steak was a little tough. But overall, it was another great dinner at Hugo's! read more

Houston Restaurant week is here. This time we headed to Hugo's. Apparently, they have a big vegetarian menu which they have discontinued during the Covid season- bummer ! but still, they did have vegetarian options in the restaurant week menu and that was good enough. Hugo's came highly recommended by certain friends, who actually took us there as part of their treat to mark a huge celebration. We made prior reservations but got delayed do to work, but nevertheless arrived there with flowers and a card in hand. The first feeling of the restaurant itself was very classy and upscale. But somehow, I did not feel homey- cannot explain why- maybe it was the mandatory mask which hid their smiley faces, or maybe it had been a very busy day and they were simply too exhausted, I don't know .... But food, the presentation, the quantity, quality- all were excellent. Simply lip-smacking and that deserves nothin less than the maximum stars. We choose one restaurant week menu, and all the vegetarian starters they had on the regular menu. Being my first time, I was like - woo - good we brought our to-go boxes - but when they came in, they were just the right size. We got the mushrooms- with chocolate mole on it , the brussels sprouts with corn, and couliflower - ofcourse they had thier own special spellings and names for these -oh soo yummy- starters. The restaurant week menu came with a bowl of soup, corn bread pastry, stuffed poblano peppers- I fell in love with these peppers... Just when I thought it could not get better, they brought out the desserts - and then I had to fall all over again- they were just out of a dessert show- I was scared to put my spoon into them lest they spoil, but once my spoon touched my lips, I could not stop until the plate was wiped clean. If you want to try high class mexican with all out chef-presentation - go to Hugo's. Hugo's has a whole list of chain to his name and is owned by the much celebrated chef Hugo Ortego. If you visit their website, there is a really long list of awards and appreciations he has won. A fine-dining definite must visit for Mexican food. Absolute gem of a place in Houston's fine dining scene. One of my favorite things about Hugo's is the food is a trustworthy offering of authentic Mexican dishes, while giving an elevated and even reverent dining experience to each dish and beverage. I highly recommend the Mexican Hot Chocolate. My mother made the most amazing Mexican Hot Chocolate every year during the holidays, but she would go to Hugo's to enjoy theirs. When I went to Hugo's for the first time after her passing and ordered it in her memory, the flavors brought tears to my eyes. It's truly something to experience. Went for happy hour and got The Dark and stormy-strong ginger beer flavor that highlighted the rum, the lechon which was tasty and perfectly came with 5 tortillas for the 5 of us, and the appetizer sampler which had a bit of everything (can't remember it all). I cannot believe that I have not written a review for Hugo's. My very first time going to Hugo's was in the early 2010's after I moved back to Houston (read: Katy) with my parents and my bff who was an inner looper would always take me to fun places (oh, how the tables have turned (but I digress)). At that time I only knew of the magnificent Sunday brunch but as time slowly progressed and I moved inside 610 I started dining out more frequently and Hugo's became one of my absolute favorite restaurants. It was the last restaurant I visited before the pandemic and it was my first restaurant after being at home for 81 days. If you haven't been to Hugo's let me give you an introduction. Normally Hugo's has a valet parking lot. These days it's park on your own and go in as they are probably trying to minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Upon arriving at the door someone will open the door for you and you have masks and hand sanitizers available for use. You approach the hostess stand as you normally would and they will get you to your table if you have a reservation. If you don't I am not sure how that would work these days as everything is available by reservation only due to the social distancing regulations. There were people waiting when I arrived but I would not risk it. Enough about the entrance and parking lot LOL. If you are here you absolutely must try the Hugo Rita, pulpo, duck mole, and the churros. Everything else is pretty delicious but these are my absolute must haves! If you go to Hugo's and you do not get the duck mole then I feel like you are missing out on life. The cabrito is also my favorite. They both tie for first place. The pulpo is the app that you don't usually get like this anywhere else. It's cooked to the perfect texture and is not rubbery like many other restaurants. The plating, taste, and service are all nothing short of perfection. The churros are fried to a perfect crunch and filled with caramel, drizzled with chocolate, and topped with a scoop of chocolate ice cream and served with a side of traditional Mexican hot chocolate. I am not saying that it's a caloric abundance but it is definitely an indulgent experience that should be enjoyed without any guilt! I am so glad that I graduated from the buffet to the lovely dinners. Regardless of what meal you choose at Hugo's I am sure it will be an amazing experience. read more

Dear Foodie readers, we finally made it to the highly recommended Sunday brunch....we went for Mothers day, and it could not be more perfect, well other than the rain....they had a beautiful balloon garland to take photos in front of, and they had the band playing live music (not sure if that is a regular staple). The buffet was impressive, from ceviche, to brisket tamales, and more....even the roasted potatoes were to die for...there is so much to choose from, I could not even try it all, I got so full. Then there was the dessert table, honestly the best tres leches in town....the milk to cake ratio is impeccable....they also have freshly made hot chocolate, which my kids loved. The service was fantastic, and we loved that we sat in the room in the back, very bright and less noisy...make reservations, it does get busy. read more

We were finally able to get into this Brunch favorite. We visited Saturday and our server was Victor. Victor made our time here a total experience, very knowledgeable and made great suggestions. We ordered the Ceviche, the scalloped Potato side, and the Birria Tacos. The Birria tacos were outstanding, the ceviche was light and delicious, and the potatoes were also fantastic. We wanted coffee and at Victors recommendation we chose a brown sugar laced coffee from a clay pot and suggested we add tequila to it. It was delicious. It had been forever since I've revisited Hugo's. I recently had the chance to try their brunch for the first time (a la carte, not the pre-covid buffet). Their patio is so lovely! They had heaters set up for the chilly day, and tables spaced a good distance apart. I had their cafe de olla (spiced coffee), guava mimosas, chilaquiles, and churros. The coffee was so good and a really nice change from my usual cup of plain black coffee. The mimosas were fruity and refreshing. The chilaquiles had a really good green sauce. And the churros are the one thing I make sure to order every time now because I think theirs are some of the best. Our waiter was super friendly and helpful and made sure we all enjoyed our food. It was a really nice brunch experience if you're looking for somewhere classy that isn't pretentious, and don't mind a little splurge $$. read more

Huevos rancheros $18- 2 crisp corn tortillas topped with refried beans, grilled steak, fried eggs, salsa de tomate, herbs and cotija cheese I don't think I've had huevos rancheros before, but this was yummy. It reminded me of spaghetti sauce / chili rather than Pico or salsa. The tortillas were still crispy w/ all the meat and salsa on top. They must be fried. It was kind of hard to cut w/ a knife though, I had to break them w/ the knife rather than cut them, but I liked the crunchiness. The steak was flavorful and tender, and they served a good amount of it. I saved half for my bf. I was skeptical because I dislike fancy, cute places that charge for the ambiance / experience w/ just okay food. Not sure if I'd return though just bc it's pricey Mexican food, but it was a good meal w/ my girls. Kenya our waitress was very attentive and patient (my friend was being complicated with her cappuccino & food order). Oh, and she recommended the huevos divorciados for those who like that. I've been to Hugo's a couple of times over the years and I somehow have never gotten around to reviewing this Houston institution. Hugo's has appeared high up (often top 10) on Alison Cook's top 100 restaurants. Alison is Houston's top food critic and works for the Houston Chronicle. Hugo's chef, Hugo Ortega, is one of Houston's top chefs. He's been nominated for and has won the James Beard Award a.k.a. the Oscars in the industry. He has a great story too as he started as a dishwasher before working his way up to what he is today. Hugo's is upscale Mexican dining. It's a higher price point than you would typically pay for Mexican but it's well worth it. The food is authentic and I've loved every dish I've had, no matter whether it's lunch or dinner. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful too. You really can't go wrong with anything here. Their desserts are great too and they are also known for their brunch buffet. Hugo Ortega has several other restaurants around town including Xochi, Caracol, and Backstreet Cafe. One of Houston's best restaurants! read more

It was raining really hard but my car was parked two blocks away, I asked him if I can borrow an umbrella he said no the umbrella is only for customers I was like " seriously? " I just finished eating here, or u mean because I did not valet here? Then I begged him I ll bring it back very soon, finally he lend me a broken umbrella, ok I was holding this crappy broken umbrella walking two blocks and finally reached to my car, I drove back and trying to return the umbrella, there is another valet guy who is slim and taller than previous one, and he is sooo nice, once he saw me waking out of my car, he directly run towards me telling me he can get it, just hold on there cuz there is a big water puddle on the side, he did not even bring an umbrella! Hugo's is a long-established Mexican (Oaxacan) restaurant Houston, named after Chef Hugo Ortega, who emigrated from Mexico and rose from dishwasher to chef to chef-owner of multiple restaurants in Houston. On previous business trips to Houston we've had excellent diners at Caracol and Xochi. The restaurant is huge and gorgeous, with a Christmas tree made of poinsettias greeting you upon entry! They have a separate vegetarian menu which was great for my coworker along with a sizable drink and entree menu. You can get grasshoppers here, whereas if you want ants, head over to Xochi, LOL. Service and food were excellent, so 5 stars. * Octopus tacos were tender and spicy. * I tried one of my friend's mini potato tacos - excellent texture contrast and great flavors * My entree was the duck leg mole - bold flavors and enjoyed the crispy skin! Did not care too much for the savory bread pudding but liked the sweet potato mash. * Brussels sprouts as a side were solid. Sliced thin and mixed with large roasted corn kernels. * Hugo Ortega's restaurant have some of the most creative desserts. Like I mentioned, the brunch buffet (only on Sundays) is amazing. Not only do you get to sample a vast array of food, but there is also my *absolute favorite tres leches cake* and Mexican hot chocolate. Do not skip this. Most recently I came for regular brunch, and everything was perfect. We ordered the ceviche and Suckling Pig to start. The suckling pig with the fresh corn tortilla was amazing - it was just as delicious of a bite as the Christina Martinez taco in Philly. I also had the fish tacos which were wonderful.
