I'm giving Hot Java 2 stars because although I've been in quite a few times and everyone is always super nice, I just walked there with my dog and they wouldn't serve me. I waited outside with my dog because I knew I couldn't bring him in. I figured someone would come out and take my order. Eventually when no one was coming out I asked a man to please go in and tell them I'm stuck outside with my dog but would love a coffee! He came back out and told me they don't take orders outside. Ok, I get it that they don't normally come outside to take orders but they can't make an exception for a person stuck outside with their dog? That's just common courtesy. I would never make a customer leave because I didn't want to take an extra two steps to come take an order. I couldn't tie my dog up because he's a large Siberian husky and would easily run down the road with the aluminum furniture they have outside tied to his leash. Mind you, the place was completely empty with no lines at the counter or anything. The two workers were on their phones waiting for people to come in. It's not like they were swamped and didn't have time to come take a coffee order. Long story short, I guess I get it but I definitely felt bummed and will not be back. The fact that two bored workers couldn't go the extra 1/2 mile to take the order of someone stuck outside just sucks - especially because I walked all the way there just for a coffee. read more

I come here almost every morning for the best coffee ever - "fog lifter" - and a berry bran muffin. I frequently sit here on the weekends to write letters/read etc. Their iced green tea is great, and so are the paninis. Really friendly staff, really nice decor, and lots of seating. read more

The atmosphere and staff of this coffee house are amazing. You can sit in a comfy chair reading, doing homework or arrange a group to meet every week to practice French (thanks guys) all with friendly staff handing you a hot cup of coffee or tea. It usually takes a second to get your coffee made for you, but it's being made as you order it...so, waiting the minute and a half extra to get a perfected cup of joe is not a bad thing. The employees are my favorite part of this place and the fact that they let me sit and work for hours on end without blinking an eye. If you're in the neighborhood, stop by, grab a coffee and take a load off. read more

This place is always full of people. It's spacious, there is lots of seating, and the staff is friendly. The coffee is okay but I doubt people come here for the coffee or the pastries - they come for chillen' and the ambiance. People sit outside and crowd watch. Long Beach is cool because it's like a proper city and people are always out and about, so one can actually crowd watch. Hot java is also right across from the beach - really it's a two for one. Great customer service. The staff was very friendly. A group of us needed a place to meet and they were able to put tables together and reserved a spot for us when we called in! They open early and open late so this a great study spot. Free wi-fi. The hot chocolate was amazing, with 7 different types of milk to choose from. They even make their own whip cream which was delicious. This is definitely one of my new favorite cafes in Long Beach! Hot Java gets 5 stars for cozy comfort, 4 stars for great wi-fi, 3 stars for the average coffee quality and 2 stars for the stale baked goods. This shop is my go-to for my work-at-home days. I can always find a place to sit and work uninterrupted, even at the community tables. Plenty of power outlets, and the staff never makes you feel like a bother. The prices are reasonable enough to keep your drink hot (or cold) while you're working away. The only tip for the owners is to remind the baristas that there's no invisible sound barrier in front of the counter, so they should save their gripes about co-workers/managers for their smoke breaks. read more

I used to go this this place EVERY SINGLE NIGHT for about five years. The receptionist at my dentist's office said every time she drove by, she saw me sitting outside. After a while I began to wonder why exactly I was going EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. The drinks weren't anything you couldn't get cheaper or better at any other Long Beach café. A few times when I got a brownie it could've substituted as a hockey puck. The pastry case to the left of the register invariably had a fly (or flies) buzzing around inside. Some of the staff were nice. On the whole service was inconsistent, unprofessional, and for some reason certain baristas were under the delusion they were starring in a remake of Mean Girls or the latest episode of Ru Paul's Drag race. Twice I saw rats scurrying around the floor that "came from Chen's next door". Needless to say, my shadow will not be darkening the entrance to this establishment any time in the foreseeable future. read more

Since moving to Long Beach this is my favorite place to get a Jasmine green tea latte! They are the only place I've been too that isn't Asian run that can even get close to the real thing! Really love this place for studying and working. I usually get the cappuccino but the last time I got the iced coffee with a pump of hazelnut. Way too sweet!! Next time I will either ask for less or no sweetener at all. However, atmosphere is great and staff is friendly. Prices are also reasonable- even if you get an alternative kind of milk like I usually do. Can get a little noisy because the windows are wide open by the street but usually it's fine. read more

The best Americano coffee in Long Beach. Triple shots of expresso, hot water and a splash of fresh half and half...and its "on". I am a real coffee drinker, once was in "love" with the organic dark at Portfolio..but then they changed to illy and they lost me, have not been back since .. Love their fresh expresso coffee beans for my home brewed French Press. Staff are friendly, helpful and nice. First time visitor to Hot Java for the Laugh A Latte comedy night by Carlease Burke which is the third Saturday of every month with hilarious interpreter, Tom 'Hot Fingers' O'Malley. Come next month for St. Patrick's Day for the debut of Carlease's latest Laugh Academy Graduates! Probably some funny spuds onstage! Great ambience in the coffee shop which feels more like a wonderful big living room with a view of the world going by. read more

If your looking for a cute little coffee house to relax at this is the place. The workers are friendly and the place is pretty clean. The noise is about average so you could carry a business meeting on, do homework, or even go on a date. They also have a few board games and music playing to keep you entertained. read more

I went here because someone at work recommended it to me. I'm not a big coffee drinker so I got a hot chocolate and an apple fritter. The service was great. It was very quick and friendly. The barista offered to heat up my apple fritter which was great because it was a chilly morning. My hot chocolate the was very rich and tasted great. Best coffee in SoCal! These guys are from Seattle and make a Seattle coffee snob's dreams come true with every sip! Get a Cronut to go with your drink. Sandwiches are good. Not great but good/edible. I moved to Long Beach in 2014. Before I got WF at my new place I would go to HOT Java to use their WF. It is definitely convenient to my place. Sadly, I found the place very noisy! The people that work their are mostly friendly but there is a gay man who wears Daisy Duke shorts that is VERY rude and nasty. I am not sure he still works there? HOT Java hosts different gay senior citizen groups throughout the week and they get quite loud and unruly. The Golden girls on speed is the best way I can describe it. If you like burnt coffee with stale treats in a noisy environment then this place is for you! I was glad to get WF at my place. I never go their anymore. However, I do enjoy "The Library a few blocks away! They are open later and have far better coffee with delicious FRESH desserts. Much younger crowd. They have a Wednesday night stand up which is hysterically funny. My recommendation is to pass by HOT Java and check out the hip, fun coffee house "The Library". HOT Java stinks! read more

The early weekday morning crew didn't look happy to be there. Not to mention super rude and confused when I asked for my breakfast sandwich on a bagel. After the employee threw my order on the counter and said in the coldest imaginable tone "here", I looked inside the bag only to find a burned breakfast sandwich that I just threw away. If you don't like your job (which involves being generally pleasant in the morning), or are simply bad at it (burning food might be a clear indicator) find a different one. Those two employees barely deserve the menial wages they collect, and definitely not my tip. Completely turned off by the whole experience. read more

I went here to get some work done, but their wifi insists on displaying advertisements on EVERY page you visit. (from Anchorfree) Plus, these advertisements break the functioning of many sites that I use regularly. On top of that, it was incredibly slow. I love this place. The decor is great, the outside areas are great, the drinks and pastries are great, and the people (both staff and regulars) are great. Even better, they love my dog. He's allowed to come lounge inside with us, and he's always ready for a dog treat from whoever is behind the counter. The music is always good. There is wireless for those who need to study. There's a smoking and a non-smoking area. They have tranny bingo and a gay mens night. The owners are extremely involved in the political struggle for the legilization of gay marriage/overturning prop 8. Not very much a fan of this place. The coffee is average, prices seem cheap. Usually overcrowded in the evenings and late nights. More of a gay club that sells coffee, maybe even a pick up spot. TV is always blarring, internet is usually down. Some people take dogs that are so annoying, non-stop barking. read more

I love spending time at Hot Java. It is a great place to sit and read/write, use my laptop, or spend time with a friend. The staff and customers are very friendly. The barista-prepared coffee drinks are very good. The brewed coffee, however, is inconsistent - sometimes good, sometimes kind of stale or just off. Other than the quality of the brewed coffee, the reason I am not giving it 5 stars is that I have witnessed some of the baristas touch the cups on the rims or even touch the ice in the cup that I will be drinking from! That kind of makes me cringe, b/c it is not hygenic. The desserts are too big for the weight conscious, and sometimes even stale. It would be great if they carried cookies, and smaller size treats. read more
