Seems someone there has started to care about the place and its customers. I came back a few months ago to see if anything has changed. I was happy to have been greeted by whoever is at the counter. Greeted with a good and friendly attitude each time I've returned. I have not seen any of the bad attitude people working there. When I'm charged the price has always been correct and consistent. The Barista is even friendly. I'm always thanked for coming and have even been told to have a great day. My drink has always been made as ordered and its one of the better Lattes I've had in LB. Their pastries and very good. So I will continue so spend my money here. I would also like to thank whoever it is that decided it was time for a change! I love this coffee shop. Sure, I need to drive around 10 miles just to get here -- but well worth it in my opinion. Non-pretentious joint with great (read: stiff) coffee. There are always people lounging around on their laptops or casually chatting it up with friends. Outdoor seating area is always clean and in general, I have found the staff, owner (I believe his name is Ken...), and patrons alike to all be incredibly friendly and personable. I enjoy grading papers here on the weekends. Coffee and crowd are always good. Smokers do need to be kept to the corner side of the place and the food could use an upgrade. Seems very generic bakery. altho i've walked by on countless occassions, my first stop in to hot java occured last thursday, i think. the nicest guy was workin the counter (raspy deep voice). he really was incredibly helpful with answers to my every question...so he deserves about 2 of the three stars i've given this place. i wanted a half and half (half spicey chai, half vanilla) with soy. the sweetness of the soy was there...but i think there may have been more than half vanilla cuz man...the sweetness ended up overpowering ANY spice. i'll say the people are great...the drinks aren't the best i've ever had. xo read more

I will go with 5 Stars due to consistency, but it is generous. We have enjoyed good coffee and sandwiches here for over a decade, but the establishment overall has never had a high vibration. It is perfectly located next to the towering trees of the park, so it is a great place to stop, but one wants to protect their energy field. This is a great little coffee shop, but the reviews here are lacking the coffee snob perspective. The coffee and espresso drinks are very inconsistent here. Even the best baristas aren't that great. It's not bad, but it tends to be a bit weak and flavorless (not to mention it could be cheaper for what it is). It never tastes like a rich, fresh roast. Love this place for so many reasons. Even before I moved to LB, I drove all the way from Orange County just to study here. I found the atmosphere very conducive.. Can't start my day without a Mocha over ice or Java Blast. The atmosphere is fantastic; it reminds me of a huge living room where the whole community kind of drops in and out. They always have posters up of local events, and if there's something "big" on TV like the Oscars, they make an event out of it. There is a fireplace with a plasma screen ontop, 2 sets of couches, and a bunch of tables. They have board games, books. There are a bunch of outdoor tables surrounding the place, and heating lamps incase it gets cold. A big selling point is they have 3 WiFi's set up so internet connection is never slow. People bring their pets in; usually dogs. But one time I saw a student studying with a parrot on his shoulder.. Last but not least, their staff is super friendly and easy to get to know. You usually see the same faces same time each day, so if you come more than twice a week, they'll probably memorize your favorites. read more

My partner and I visit Hot Java at least once a week. We love going, we are greeted every time with a nice smile. Our favorite person is Owen he is very freandly and loves to joke around with us. We love to sit out front with our coffee, talk with our friends that visit as frequent as we do. Thay offer free wi-fi, plug in your computer, great selection of affordable beverages and snacks, and hot guys . I was looking for a local coffee shop other than Starbucks, that I could get some studying done in. After looking around on Yelp I found Hot Java, and let's just say that I can't say enough about how nice the staff here is. Hot Java is a cozy place filled with tables, couches and the aroma of baked goods and coffee in the air. This is a far cry from commercial coffee house chains, and the vibe here will make you want to come back again and again, They are laptop friendly too! When I came in tonight they were showing the Grammy Awards on their flat screen TV, and every one was gathered around the common area sitting on the couches, talking and watching the show - something you don't really see in public places now days, There is ample outdoor seating for you outdoors types, and Hot Java is exceptionally clean inside and out, The baked goods are very tasty and the coffee drinks are great.They serve everything from a cup of joe, to extra foamy lattes and for those not so into coffee, they carry an ample selection of sodas and water. This is such a fun spot, and you just never know who you will run into - you just might make a new friend or two. read more

Since I need to find a job, I decided to take my butt to a coffee house and start applying. Got a large iced coffee, which was decent, and my cousin ordered a ham and cheese panini. The panini was okay, but the chips that came with them were pretty tasty. Free wi-fi, which worked pretty well although for a short period of time it kept kicking me off. Ambiance was pretty good, except it started sounding like I was in a club the later it got in the afternoon. Luckily, I had my itunes and earphones handy. read more

I love my local gay coffee place...always nice workers there...always decorated for the holidays....always involved in the community. The smoking section is always full, which sucks for those of us who enjoy a smoke and a coffee. they keep raising their prices which makes me sad....50 cents more for an iced coffee in the last year....so you get 4 stars for that. read more

Great experience. Portfolio is my usual spot but I am trying too broaden my horizons. The guy who helped me was so incredibly nice. I made an aids fibrin simply because of how much I like him and how kind he was to me. His demeanor was so genuine it felt like a verbal hug. Coffee is great too! I didn't get anything fancy just a coffee with some steamed soy milk but coffee was fresh. They have like 5 different coffees out at a time all freshly brewed which is great because I like variety and I love coffee fresh. read more

I'm so saddened that I even have to even write this review....as Hot Java was QUICKLY becoming my favorite spot to frequent in my new LBC neighborhood. However after a few "less than welcoming" bouts with one of the older Gentleman at the front register, and now, today's incident with the now younger crew, is making me reach a decision point in my patronage of the place. I mean...ive come ber alotin the last year with friends and collegueages. Most times to "work". Today I waited at the cash register...just me, for about 13-15 Mins while the younger Manger, whose name I got later (but won't mention cause it's the same as mine), does his drawer switch with acknowledgment of a customer AT ALL. His new employ apologizes after the switch is finalized and the he mumbles "Yea..he's getting a free drink!". I hear him, and proceed to order. He walks away. She has a hard time finding my cookie on the screen and at the end, actually winds up charging me the $6 for the almond milk latte when he then comes back and seeeeees her charge me the "free drink". I kinda jokingly saying..."oh I though that one was free" and which his reply was, "I didn't say that!". So, at this point I don't need, nor want to seem like a beggar so I quickly get my card out and hand it over. (Me and her TOTALLY heard him say that lol) I mean I'm really here for the internet code to work really right? So then, she proceeds to not even charge my card at all by hitting the CASH Button! Lol. So then she calls him over again and he's like....oh you'll have to ""start over! Another 5 min wait for me. Long story short, this guy tried everything he could not make me his priority as a customer. Not cool. Even came outside where I was sitting after I decided to just cancel my order to tell me that I could not stay there unless I bought something. Guess i shoulda probably kept that $500 my boyfriend and I have spent on their coffee and sandwiches in the last 6 mths. But who knows...? Maybe they have enough buisness. I have been coming to Hot Java to study for the last 3 years of my college life. I usually do not like coffee shops as they usually attract hipsters and seems very scene instead of the relaxed atmosphere I am looking for. Hot Java is a very relaxed environment where there are a few people chatting but mostly you can sit here with a book or your laptop and chill. The coffee isn't the best but again I believe the environment is really important. The staff are friendly, sometimes slow and sometimes super attentive, so for me it balances out. After I graduate in May I plan to come here with a laptop or book just to be out and still be my solitary self. read more

The location has lots of street parking and the service I have found from Owen and others he has been working with when I go are great. It is a great place to study and hold small meetings. I wasn't sure what to get so the barista said she'd make some peanut butter mocha (said it would taste like reece's?).Sounded good, so I order it. It was pretty good.. a little too sweet for me, but when I can't complain since I didn't know what to order in the first place. the only thing that got to me while I was there, another barista said (to the barista making my drink) she wanted to try it 'so save me some if you can'.. this meant my cup wasn't full... I've always likes this spot to hang out for coffee. I used to come here a while ago, but since I live in HB I can't come as readily. They support the LGBT community here a lot and you definitely sense that yet there is no discrimination or snobbishness if that's not your forte. This place seems to do a lot of business and has a lot of employees. Problem is, I'm not sure what any of them are doing except the cashier. Every single time I go there and get a drip (which is self serve) I go to pump my coffee and they're empty. Every. Single. Time. The coffee is decent, and they serve food, which is decent, but given the choice I would recommend going to Portfolio up the street on 4th. They also have Ham and Cheese Croissants (Hot java only ever has regular croissants that no one ever buys) and their food and service are better. In a pinch Hot Java will do if you need your coffee fix and can't go the extra 3 blocks. Otherwise, go to Portfolio. read more
