Stumbled across this gastropub last night while driving on Guadalupe. It was very busy but we were able to snag a table up front. Low key pub feel. It has a vintage early 20th century look. Very simple but well done. Has a great selection of draft microbrew beer and the menu items looked really yummy. Definitely not your boring pub grub but more foodie selections. The beer prices were reasonable as well. If you want Miller Light, this is not the bar for you. I pictured this bar as a guys wine bar but for beer. With it being so close to UT I figured it would be a college scene but instead I was pleasantly surprised to find it more of a late 20's to mid 30's crowd. We will definitely go back. read more

I went to hopfields on a friday night with my boyfriend and I must admit it exceeded our expectations. the decor was lovely and gave it the feel of an old wine cellar. The staff was very friendly and knowledgable and the food was amazing. I got some sort of lamb sausage with seasoned fries and it was delicious. Not a bad pub in the UT area. Pretty good beer selection on tap and the food menu seems appetizing. The inside seems a bit cramp and it looks like they're expanding to more indoor seating? (hopefully) They also have a outside deck which is a nice option for those who might feel claustrophobic &/or might like some fresh air. Perfect little gastro pub serving 30-40 beers and ciders, a few wines and cocktails plus a simple French bistro inspired menu. I had the burger with pomes frites. It was delicious. I usually don't eat many fries, but the damned garlic aioli had me hooked...now I'll have to spend more time at the gym. This place is amazing! The food is French at its finest. The moules frites ate simply divine, white wine, chili flake, garlic and shallot. The lunch blt with a fried egg added, and sourdough bread, was pure bliss. A great beer and wine list round out the experience. Highly recommend!!! read more

Tiny and inconspicuous. 35-40 taps, but they fill all of them consistently with great beer. They get some extra credit for always having Jacobins on tap. The food is awesome! Never had a bad meal...and they are open for lunch every day! Easily the best food amongst Austin beer bars. It gets crowded quickly so get there early to grab a seat. Very similar in feel and experience to the Petrol Station in Houston. read more

Feaux Meauxjito was seriously one of the best renditions of a mojito I have ever tasted in my 22 years. A friend got the first cocktail on the menu-- can't remember what it was called-- and it was TINY and the same price as my 16 oz mojito ($8). Felt really bad after I watched them make my drink after I'd already paid and tipped on my card because they really do craft these cocktails. A lot of detail is put in, so tip kindly. They have great looking food, haven't tried it yet though. read more

Went there last night and sat at the bar with a friend. Nice place, great pub style atmosphere. we drank wine and had the Housemade Charcuterie...good selection of things to snack on...beware though it is heavy on the pate and duck liver mousse...which ended up being ironic because my friend mentioned that was the only thing she didn't really want...but she tried it and all was well. This place has a very weird layout. All of the tables are reserved and they're in like private corners. Anyway, if it's nice out, go sit out on the back patio area. Order some fries and chips and choose from their selection of beer. They don't have a huge selection, but what they did have was good. This new establishment is very close to home and I heard good things from a friend, so my husband and I tried it. We were pretty much ignored when we got there at around 4pm. I had read online that there is no table service, so I proceeded to the bar where I stood for quite some time before being acknowledged. I ordered the tart of the day which was mushroom and leek and comes with a mixed green salad on the side. It was delicious. My husband ordered the steak and frites, the steak was super fatty with little edible meat, but the frites were perfect. I wanna like it and will give it another try a least to try the Pascal Burger everyone seems to love. read more

Great combination of craft brews on tap and food and excellent, friendly professional service! The Pascal burger is worth the wait and the lamb sausage sandwich with frites (merguez..something) was great too. Only downside is that it's small and crowded. Hopefully they find a way to expand just a bit or pack more seating in - one or both. Great tap selection, service and burgers. Go ahead and try the Pascal burger with the camembert the first time, unless you've had camembert cheese before and know you don't like it. They don't put a ton of it on there, but it's a strong-ish cheese, so you'll notice the flavor in the overall pallete when eating the burger, as opposed to american cheese where it usually does little more than affect the texture. If you don't like it, try it again without the cheese or scrape it off, or try adding fresh jalepenos if that's your bag. I've found it to live up to the "what tha #$#?" reactions I've heard from others when someone swears it's the best burger they've had in Austin. I'm not sure I'd go that far, but it's a top-10 contender at least in my "book". Try it yourselves, non-believers - recommended highly. Not sure if there's a time to go there when it isn't busy unless you're near there for lunch (maybe?) but it's worth the odessey and the crowds of lovely people. read more

Bottom line: Great tap selection, friendly attentive staff and nice place. Will be back for a beer (or 2...) Had a bite to eat here on my first trip and the food was good. Burger and fries and steak frites were solid. Two things to improve: Billing: how about an itemized receipt or reviewing the tab before closeout? I only received a credit card receipt for 2 ppl's worth of drinks and food so I have no clue how much you actually charged me for beers (or how many beers were charged). EDIT: this has been addressed in my last visit. THanks guys! Also, we both thought the menu was trying to be more than was needed for this type of setup. I get that the french menu with fancy items and french names is the hip thing these days, but having to ask (or be educated) about the names of items is annoying. The food was delicious. Shared the mussels w/fries, plus the Pascal burger with the husband. We started with the Mussels and fries and could have ended there. They were so good. I'd never had mussels before so I was a bit hesitant but they were delicious. The sauce they were swimming in was so good, I wanted to dunk anything I could in it. We were already full but wanted to eat the Pascal burger too. I have no will power, but I'm okay with that. The burger came wrapped in foil so it made everything evenly warm and soft, which is good. You know when you go to a baseball game and get the hotdogs wrapped in foil and for some reason they taste so good, even though they're probably just Oscar Meyers? That's what it was like. The Pascal has Camembert, onion and pickles on it and I ate the whole dang thing. I was so full but I couldn't stop. My only con I guess was that it was a little tough to get the waiter's attention. We were at the bar but had a hard time making eye contact to get anyone to take our order (and it wasn't busy). And maybe that's just me. I'm not good at snapping at people or speaking loudly to get their attention so I usually just wait til they ask me if I'm ready to order. I'm not in a rush either so it didn't bother me at all. I really like this place. It's low-key, never too loud, nice atmosphere. I like it when they have their big screen down (usually playing Basketball or Football), although, sometimes they just have music playing. I haven't sampled a lot of the food here, but it always looks good when I see other people eat. We usually just pop in to see a special game, or have a "quick drink." I have to amend my review from 4 to 3 stars. The music there has been really bad the past 3 times I've gone. Also, I ordered the ratatouille, thinking it would be *somewhat* of a healthier option, and I simply couldn't eat it. It was more like a soup of butter and tons of garlic with soggy vegetables. That said, their fries are always amazing. If it weren't for it's convenient location, I probably wouldn't come here anymore. read more

This is a good place if you are a meat-eating beer drinker who likes salty, overpriced food. If you are, say, a cocktail-drinking vegetarian, you should definitely go elsewhere. I have been here a few times. The bartenders are frequently not very attentive or friendly. Do they not want you to spend your money there? Do they not care if you tip them? An odd approach to business. If you are lucky and run into one of the nicer bartenders, the experience can be good. If you are with a large group that just wants beer or (a limited selection of) wine, and a few nibbles on the side, this isn't the worst place you can go. But if you want a full bar or an excellent meal, go elsewhere. This is not a real restaurant by any stretch of the imagination, although they certainly charge a pretty penny for mediocre meals. I have had a couple of meals here, but there is very little on the menu that I can actually eat, because they are not at all accommodating to people with food allergies (read the horrible stories written by people with nut allergies!). I did enjoy the steak, but it comes with cross contaminated French fries, so you're basically paying $24 for a small piece of meat, since no one offers any substitutions. I suspect that the chef is cranky and the waiters are afraid of him (or her?). The space is odd, full of tiny niche rooms with terrible acoustics. The last time I was here was a true restaurant disaster. Our small party of four was first seated in a small room with a large, extremely raucous crowd of drinkers at the other table. After realizing that we would have to text each other if we wanted to converse, we asked to be moved. They were willing enough to move us, but despite the fact that there was an entire back room full of empty tables, they didn't seem to know what to do with us. The waitress very politely explained that there would be a "beer event" in over an hour there, but that we were welcome to sit there if we didn't plan to stay more than an hour. Sure, we all said, thinking that we could easily order, eat, and leave within that time frame. Whoo, were we wrong. After we moved, no one came to the table for quite a while. Not good if you're told that you have a limited time period. Finally, the waitress showed up with menus, but no wine list, and departed hastily, without asking us if we wanted drinks. One of us finally got up and went to fetch the wine list. In the meanwhile, the vegetarian was gradually becoming distressed, because there were almost no vegetarian items on the menu. We tried to remain cheerful, and when the waitress finally returned after another long wait, we were ready to order appetizers at least. But whoops, we had been given outdated menus, and half the items we wanted were no longer available! So we waited again for her to return with updated menus. By this point, we were nervous about the time. Our white wine drinkers discovered that there was no chardonnay, and our NA beer drinker had nothing, either. More disgruntlement. The final straw: some guy came up to us and told us we'd have to move, because he had to set up for the beer event. No one had told us previously that we would have less than an hour to eat! If we had known that, we would have left earlier! Two of us stood up almost simultaneously and said, "let's go." One of us stayed to talk to the manager -- turns out he was the guy who asked us to move -- he was apologetic, but you can't compensate for a such a long string of blunders and problems. We decided upon a real restaurant and never looked back. read more

Met a friend after work for dinner on a weekday. I was a bit worried about parking because parking is notorious around UT campus. To my pleasant surprise, there was no problem at all. I like how the back seating area, where my friend and I sat, was compartmentalized. It felt like we had our own private dining room.
